Affordable Ways To Mix Classic And Trendy Decor In Your Home
Learn how to mix classic and trendy decor using pieces you already own. Simple, budget-friendly tips to freshen up your home without buying new furniture.
As a decorator, I love watching new trends unfold every year. There is something exciting about a fresh color, a new pattern, or a piece that suddenly feels like everyone has to have it. But as a decorator, I also know how important it is to filter through those trends and choose only what will truly work in our home.
The good news is you can enjoy the best of both worlds. You can freshen up your home and bring in a few of those trendy pieces you love while keeping the classic style that makes your house feel like home, and you can do it on a budget, without a full furniture overhaul.
Today I am sharing my best tips and tricks for blending trendy accents with your classic decor in a budget-friendly way. Let’s get started.
Let’s look at what trends and classics are and the benefits and downfalls of using them in decor.
Trends And Classics
Trends are those fun, of-the-moment styles we cannot help but notice. They pop up everywhere, from Pinterest boards to home decor stores, and they can make even a room we love suddenly feel a little out of date. Classics, on the other hand, are the steady, dependable pieces that never seem to go anywhere.
Let’s take a closer look at what makes something a trend, and what makes something a classic.
What Is A Trend?
I like trends for a few reasons. They offer a new approach to decorating and give us fresh, exciting options to bring into our home. Some of my favorite pieces I have had for years were once trends before they settled in and became part of my everyday style.
Trends often reflect what is happening in the world around us, whether that is a color, a pattern, or a style that suddenly feels like it is everywhere. Block print patterns, a specific Pantone color of the year, or popular looks like cottagecore and the emerging Americana style are all good examples. I use my own decorating style as a filter of sorts, sifting through the trendy options out there and choosing only the ones that will genuinely work in our home.
In our dining room, I paired a traditional lamp and blue and white chinoiserie with a trendy woven basket and a trendy iron and glass bar cart. The look is a perfect example of how a few current pieces can sit right alongside your classics without competing with them, each one giving the other a little more personality.
What Is A Classic?
Classics are like the dependable best friend of design. They never go out of style, and they are usually defined by clean lines, balanced proportions, and neutral colors like white, beige, or gray. A gorgeous leather armchair or a timeless white buffet are perfect examples- the kind of pieces that anchor a room for years.
While trends bring energy and excitement, classics bring calm and a sense of quiet sophistication. The real secret to a beautiful room is finding the balance between the two.
A recent DIY ginger jar lamp in our home is a true classic, as are the watercolor wildflower paintings hung nearby in thin black frames. The chest of drawers below them was a trendy splurge fifteen years ago, and it has more than earned its place as one of the classic foundations of our home. Our spindle chair is another classic that holds a fun, summery pillow, one that pulls in the colors of our home’s overall color story.
The white buffet in our living room is another classic, along with the green ginger jar lamps that sit on top of it and the set of four botanicals flanking the mirror above. That mirror leans a bit more trendy, and so does the wicker bowl shaped vase I added this spring, a more natural, modern container that is perfect for holding an armful of hydrangeas.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Of A Trend
Trends are like the fun, spontaneous friend who always knows what is in style. One of the best things about following a trend is the instant refresh it can give your home. Trends reflect what is happening in design right now, so incorporating them can make your space feel current and full of life.
They are also fantastic for sparking creativity. A new trend might inspire you to try something you had not considered before, such as adding a splash of color to a room. And because trends are everywhere, finding trendy pieces is easy, whether you are shopping in-store or online. Adding those touches of what is hot can be a fun, low-commitment way to play with your decor and try something new.
I will be honest, I have made more than a few unwise decisions buying trendy items that looked so attractive in the store, on a blog, or online, only to bring them home and realize they created an unbalanced, confusing look instead of the fresh update I was hoping for. And if I am not careful, I can still fall into that same trap today. Some trends just pull me in, even when I know better.
That is the tricky part of trends. When you rely too heavily on them, your home can lose that sense of individuality that makes it truly yours. It is easy to end up with a space that looks like a carbon copy of what you see on Pinterest or Instagram. Trendy pieces also tend to have a short shelf life. What feels fresh today might feel tired in just a couple of years.
The goddess head plannter is a perfect example of a trendy piece that brought life and personality against the more traditional backdrop in our living room. She is now spreading her happiness in my office.
And let’s not forget the cost. Continuously swapping out decor to stay on trend can add up quickly, leaving you with a home that feels stuck in a specific moment rather than timeless.
The trick to avoiding these pitfalls is to be selective. Embrace trends in small doses through accents like throw pillows, vases, or art, and pair them with classic, timeless pieces. This approach lets you enjoy the fun of trends without sacrificing the personality and longevity of your decor. After all, the goal is a home that feels both stylish and uniquely yours.
🌿 TIP BOX: Before buying a trendy piece, sit with it for a day or two. If you are still thinking about it after that, it is probably a good sign it will earn its place in your home.

Classics are like the foundation of a great wardrobe. They are timeless, dependable, and always in style. I have to admit, I love classic design. It feels beautiful, dependable, and timeless to me, and most of the furnishings in our home would be considered classics, not just in style but in color too. I lean toward neutrals for almost everything.
Decorating with classic pieces comes with real benefits. They have a refined, sophisticated look that stands the test of time. Classics are not tied to fleeting fads, so they keep your decor feeling polished and elegant year after year.
Whether it is a well-crafted sofa, a traditional dining table, or a neutral color palette, these elements have a way of grounding a room and making it feel effortlessly put together.
But through years of decorating, I have found that these lovely pieces, as easy as they are to live with, can be a bit staid if they are the only style and color in the room. They hold up the room beautifully, but they do not always give it the pizzazz a room truly needs.
There is a certain excitement that comes with trying something new, and sticking strictly to classics can leave your decor missing that spark of surprise or fun.
Even classics, as timeless as they are, are not immune to aging. Over time, even the most beloved pieces can start to feel a little dated. And high-quality classic pieces often come with a higher price tag. They are built to last, which makes them worth the cost, but it is a bigger commitment upfront compared to trendy or mass-produced items.
The good news is you can easily freshen up classics and keep them feeling relevant. Pair them with contemporary accents, like a bold piece of artwork or trendy throw pillows, to bring in a modern touch.
To keep our dining room from feeling too predictable, I removed the a classic dining room chair and replaced it with a bench in a pretty, fun pattern. It added so much personality to my neutral dining room. The rattan pendant light above the classic round table also give this room a punch of texture and an interesting element to the room.
Add layers of texture or color to create interest and personality. By giving your classics a little attention and a few updates here and there, you will keep your decor feeling timeless and uniquely yours.
🌿 TIP BOX: If a classic piece is starting to feel a bit flat, try moving it to a different spot in your home before replacing it. A change of scenery and a different mix of pieces around it can make a familiar item feel new again.
How To Incorporate Classic And Trendy Decor
Decorating a room with a mix of classic and trendy decor can create an attractive, one of a kind space that balances timeless styling with a fresh, updated aesthetic. I have followed the same formula for decades, and it works every time.
First, establish a whole-home color palette that works for your house. Then choose classic foundational furnishings for most of your pieces. Finally, add accent decor that brings interest and life to your home, always keeping in mind the style and feeling you want it to convey. Think of that feeling as a filter for everything you bring into your house.
My accent decor is always a mix of classics and trendy items, chosen in colors that complement our home’s overall color story. It is a simple formula that always works.
Here are some tips to help you achieve that same balance in your own home.
Establish A Cohesive Color Palette
Creating a cohesive color palette is the first step toward successfully blending classic and trendy decor. Think of your color palette as the glue that ties all the elements in your room together.
It sets the tone for your space and ensures everything feels intentional, even when you mix different styles. When choosing your palette, keep the 60-30-10 rule in mind. 60 percent of your room’s color comes from the dominant neutral base, 30 percent from a secondary hue, and 10 percent from accent colors.
This balance keeps your decor feeling cohesive without overwhelming the space. By sticking to a thoughtfully chosen color palette, you will marry the timeless appeal of classic decor with the fresh energy of trendy accents, creating a room that feels balanced, inviting, and uniquely yours.
🌿 TIP BOX: Test your palette before committing. Gather paint chips, fabric swatches, and a few decor pieces together on a tray and live with them for a few days. Colors can look completely different under morning light versus evening lamplight.
Focus On Classic Foundational Pieces

When it comes to decorating a room with classic and trendy decor, the secret to success lies in building your space around high-quality, timeless foundational pieces. Think of these classic items as the anchors of your room.
Investing in classic furniture and larger decor pieces makes sure that your room stays stylish and functional for years to come. Here’s how to choose and work with these foundational elements:
- Choose well-crafted furniture. Look for a sofa, dining table, or bed frame with clean lines and durable construction. A neutral-colored sofa or a solid-wood dining table can adapt to almost any design trend you want to explore.
- Stick to timeless designs. Opt for pieces with simple, elegant shapes that won’t feel outdated in a few years. Items like spindle chairs, upholstered ottomans, or a classic four-poster bed are always in style.
- Prioritize quality over quantity. While classic furniture may cost a bit more upfront, it is a worthwhile investment. These pieces are built to last, so you won’t need frequent replacements.
- Pick a versatile palette. Foundational pieces in neutral tones like beige, gray, or white create a blank canvas for trendy pops of color or bold patterns.
Once you have your classic foundation, you can have fun layering trendy elements like pillows, rugs, and artwork. These accents can easily be swapped out as styles change, while your foundational pieces remain the steady, stylish heart of your room.
🌿 TIP BOX: Shop your own house before shopping a store. Move a trendy piece from one room to another before buying something new. You might already own the refresh you are looking for.
Use Trendy Accents And Accessories
Adding trendy accents and accessories is one of the easiest and most fun ways to keep your space feeling fresh and current. These smaller decor items let you experiment with trends in your home without committing to a complete overhaul.
And when trends change and you are ready, you can let go of them and try something new. Since these elements are easy to switch out, they are perfect for seasonal updates or whenever you are ready to refresh your space.
The key is to layer trendy accents thoughtfully, so they enhance your classic foundational pieces rather than overpower them.
Edit And Simplify
When it comes to decorating, less really can be more. A crowded space with too many trendy or classic pieces can feel busy and overwhelming instead of stylish and inviting. The trick to making your decor shine is knowing when to edit and simplify.
Start by taking a good look at your room. Ask yourself: Does each piece really add to the look I’m going for? Does it fit with the overall feel? If something doesn’t quite work, don’t be afraid to move it, store it, or swap it out for something that feels more you.
Here are a few easy ways to keep things clean and balanced:
- Focus on fewer, better pieces: Instead of filling your space with lots of decor, pick a few standout items you truly love. A beautiful chair or an eye-catching piece of art can make a bigger impact than a cluttered collection of smaller things.
- Leave some space: Empty shelves, open table surfaces, and blank spots on walls are not your enemy. They give the eye a chance to rest and let your favorite pieces take center stage.
- Rotate your decor: If you’re attached to certain items but feel like there’s too much going on, consider switching things out seasonally or every few months. It keeps your space fresh and lets each piece shine at different times.
- Stick to your vision: Whenever you’re tempted to add something new, ask whether it fits the look and feel of your space. A clear color palette or style makes it easier to decide what works and what doesn’t.
🌿 TIP BOX: Try the one in, one out rule. When you bring a new decor piece into a room, remove one that is already there. It is an easy way to keep a room edited without ever feeling like you are starting from scratch.

Questions You Might Be Asking
Yes, it really can go both ways. A trend that sticks around long enough eventually becomes a classic, a tried and true piece that never really leaves style. And every once in a while, a classic gets rediscovered and has a whole new moment as a trend. Decor is funny that way.
This is my favorite question because the answer is so doable. Start with small, swappable pieces like a throw pillow, a vase, or a piece of art rather than furniture. You get to enjoy the trend without a big price tag, and if you change your mind later, you have not lost much.
Classic, every time. Think of your classic pieces as the steady foundation and your trendy pieces as the fun extras layered on top. That way your home always feels like you, even as the trendy bits come and go.
Absolutely, and honestly, that mix is what makes a home feel collected rather than staged. The trick is keeping everything working within the same color story. When your pieces share a palette, they read as curated, even if they came from very different eras.
I go by feel more than any hard rule. If a room starts to feel busy or like it belongs to someone else instead of me, that is my sign to edit. My one in, one out rule works well here too. If you bring something new in, let something go.
Mixing classic and trendy decor is truly my go to way of decorating. My classic, transitional pieces are the backbone of every room, and I layer in trendy decor to keep things looking fresh, interesting, and personal.
This approach does not have to cost much, and it does not have to be complicated. Start with the foundation you already have, add a color palette that ties it all together, then have fun layering in a few trendy accents that speak to you.
The beauty of this method is that it grows with you. Your classics stay put while your trendy touches come and go, which means your home never feels stuck in one moment. It simply keeps evolving, one small update at a time.
Many of the trendy pieces in our own home have been with us for a decade or more. What started as a trendy find has quietly become a classic in our home, the kind of piece I would never let go of now. That is the fun of it. Today’s trend can easily become tomorrow’s beloved classic.
Remember, the goal is not a house that looks like everyone else’s Pinterest board. It is a home that feels like yours, timeless in its foundation and fresh in its details.
Happy Decorating!

I’m not sure I like your two new square ottomans. The color is perfect for your space but the boxiness is off. To my eye they seem too chunky sitting between your lovely spindle chairs. Wouldn’t a bench look better and still give you that extra sitting? I hope this doesn’t offend but I’m sure your explanation will make me see it differently.
Thanks for your input. However a bench is boxy too and a bit taller. I have a bench as a coffee table this summer.
Yvonne, I love to see your videos. The rooms and decor is so pure, have such clean lines and the occasional touch of color whether it be flowers or (my favorite, the pillow that appears to be light blue with a tulip), or a more subtle tone such as light blue. Thank you for putting all the time and love in all you do.
Linda, you are so welcome. I love helping women like me, who love their homes and families.
I like your box ottomans in front of the fireplace. To me it represents the none use of the fireplace in this season. They look expensive and the fabric is beautiful. The poof style would be too casual to me and are not as sturdy to sit on.
Thanks, Cheryl. That is exactly why I put the ottomans in front of the fireplace.
Good advice to keep bigger ticket items neutral and simple, reflect trends in smaller items. Kitchen and bathroom renovations baffle me and we’ve been able to gut and update all of them in the last 10-15 years, but they are already outdated and that frustrates me! A designer once told me that trends in those areas recycle about every 7 years, so at least my stained cabinetry is back in style!
I agree with that designer. Keep bathrooms as trend free and as neutral as possible.
Love this! Are you able to share where those chairs are from? (Cream colored ones with balls on spindles)?
