CLASSIC LIVING ROOM WITH TRENDY ACCENTS

It can be challenging to ensure that classic and trendy elements complement each other without overpowering or clashing when decorating with both of them in a room. It’s a balancing act! But when done right, curating classic and trendy decor together creates beauty, interest, and a seamless look all its own. Here are tried and true tips for incorporating classics and trendy decor together in a room.

Let’s look at what a trend and classics are and the benefits and downfalls of using them in decor.

What Is A Trend

A decorating trend refers to a popular style, theme, or design that is widely embraced and followed in interior design and home decor. Trends are born as a reaction to the world around us. They are creative solutions to what is happening in our lives. Trends can be practical or inventive or sometimes even a bit ridiculous!

Trends can emerge in various aspects of decorating, including color schemes, patterns, materials, furniture styles, and decorative accents. They often influenced the popular tastes of a particular time period. Examples of decorating trends may include minimalist design, farmhouse style, mid-century modern, bohemian decor, industrial chic, Scandinavian design, or eco-friendly and sustainable elements. These trends can shape the way homes are designed and decorated, providing inspiration and guidance to home decorators and interior designers alike.

It’s important to note that trends are ever-evolving, and what may be popular today could evolve or fade over time.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Of A Trend

One positive aspect of following a decor trend is the opportunity to give your home a contemporary and up-to-date look. Trends reflect the current design aesthetics and can bring a fresh just now look to your decor.

They can provide inspiration that you may not have considered before, allowing you to explore new styles.

Popular trends are often readily available in stores and online, making it easy to find the items you need to decorate your home. Embracing a trend can be an enjoyable way to experiment with different looks and transform your space into a reflection of the latest design influences.

While there are advantages to decorating with trends, it’s important to consider the downsides as well. Following trends too closely can lead to a lack of your own unique and personal style expressed in your decor, as many others may have similar-looking spaces. Just look at Pinterest!

Additionally, trends have a short-lived appeal, and constantly updating your decor to match the latest trends can be too expensive. Most trends become outdated rather quickly, resulting in a home that feels stuck in a specific time.

To avoid these downsides, you might want to approach trends selectively and thoughtfully, blending them with timeless elements and prioritizing your personal style. It’s all about a balance between staying current and creating decor that withstands the test of time.

What Is A Classic

Classic design possesses several key elements that contribute to its enduring wide appeal.

First, it has a tried and true sense of timelessness. It has stood the test of good taste and has a quality that people are attracted to. Classic design often incorporates clean lines, balanced proportions, and harmonious symmetry. Classic style transcends trends.

It focuses on simplicity and avoids excessive decoration, creating a sense of understated beauty. And classic decor often relies on neutral color palettes, such as shades of white, cream, beige, or gray, which enhance its overall sense of timelessness.

The use of high-quality materials and craftsmanship is also essential in classic design, as it ensures longevity and durability. Classic decor seamlessly works with most other design styles, allowing it to adapt to changing trends while still looking beautiful.

All these factors create a sense of enduring charm and make classic decor a timeless choice for any home.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Of A Classic

Decorating with classics offers many benefits that will keep your decor looking updated and attractive. One of the key advantages is the timeless look a classic will bring to your decor. Classic pieces possess a refined aesthetic that transcends passing fads and trends.

While there are undeniable benefits to decorating with classic decor, it’s important to consider the downsides as well. One potential drawback is the excitement of getting new, up-to-the-minute decor. Classic decor can sometimes feel predictable or repetitive, lacking the thrill of experimenting with the latest design ideas.

Over time, classic decor can also start to feel a bit outdated. Remember, everything has an expiration date, even classic furnishings.

Investing in high-quality classic pieces can come with a higher price tag compared to trendy or mass-produced items. Despite these downsides, it is easy to overcome them by incorporating contemporary accents, adding personal touches, and periodically refreshing the styling of classic decor.

Invest in classic furniture and larger items that serve as anchor decor. Classic pieces, such as a well-crafted sofa or an elegant dining table, provide a timeless foundation that can be complemented with trendier elements.

Use Trendy Accents And Accessories

  1. I’m not sure I like your two new square ottomans. The color is perfect for your space but the boxiness is off. To my eye they seem too chunky sitting between your lovely spindle chairs. Wouldn’t a bench look better and still give you that extra sitting? I hope this doesn’t offend but I’m sure your explanation will make me see it differently.

    1. Thanks for your input. However a bench is boxy too and a bit taller. I have a bench as a coffee table this summer.

Yvonne, I love to see your videos. The rooms and decor is so pure, have such clean lines and the occasional touch of color whether it be flowers or (my favorite, the pillow that appears to be light blue with a tulip), or a more subtle tone such as light blue. Thank you for putting all the time and love in all you do.

    1. Linda, you are so welcome. I love helping women like me, who love their homes and families.

  3. I like your box ottomans in front of the fireplace. To me it represents the none use of the fireplace in this season. They look expensive and the fabric is beautiful. The poof style would be too casual to me and are not as sturdy to sit on.

    1. Thanks, Cheryl. That is exactly why I put the ottomans in front of the fireplace.

Good advice to keep bigger ticket items neutral and simple, reflect trends in smaller items. Kitchen and bathroom renovations baffle me and we’ve been able to gut and update all of them in the last 10-15 years, but they are already outdated and that frustrates me! A designer once told me that trends in those areas recycle about every 7 years, so at least my stained cabinetry is back in style!

    1. I agree with that designer. Keep bathrooms as trend free and as neutral as possible.

  5. Love this! Are you able to share where those chairs are from? (Cream colored ones with balls on spindles)?
