I am the queen of decorating mistakes! I’ve made tons of mistakes… big and small and everything in between. Yes, I have painted a room the totally wrong color and hated it… three times!!!!! And I have ordered a piece of furniture that was all wrong for a room on several occasions. I have also bought and hung curtains in a room that were different lengths. Don’t get me started on rugs! I am the return-goddess of the decorating world! And I can’t even count all the holes I’ve put in the walls at StoneGable because I did not measure correctly! I’m the poster child for decorating blunders! Let’s talk about the best way to handle decorating blunders!
Make sure you check out podcast #4… Decorating Blunders at Decorating Tips And Tricks, HERE or at the bottom of the post. You can hear a funny story about one of my biggest decorating blunders! And here lots of great tips for how to fix them!
I know decorating mistakes can make a person dissolve into a puddle of tears. Yes, that has happened to me many times! But not one of those tears helped me handle or fix my decorating mistakes.
Let’s face it… We make mistakes in every realm of our lives why would decorating be any different? We should expect to make mistakes! And mistakes are a big, big part of the learning process. Yes, it stinks to have to repaint a room! And yes, boxing up and returning a large piece of furniture is a pain in the neck and other areas of our body! And losing money on a mistake is a big kick in the pocketbook!
But here’s some very good news… almost all decorating mistakes are fixable!!!!! We just have to know how to approach them!
Sometimes we can fix the decorating mistake right away and sometimes we have to wait! Most of the time with a little effort and time a decorating blunder can be solved!
Here’s my best advice… acknowledge the mistake, keep your wits about you and your emotions in check, learn from the blunder and then make a plan to make it right!
I painted a guest room white… two times and each time the room had a “green” cast to it. How frustrating!!!!! Finally, I figured out it was not the white paint at all. A big tree outside the bedroom was casting a green hue into the room and the walls were reflecting it! We finally chose a very very light blue for the room and it took care of the green tint on the walls!
The big lesson I learned was NOT to paint a room pure white if there is a tree outside AND you must test any paint you are considering even if it’s pure white! Everything affects paint color. What is inside and outside the room, the time of day, the lighting, and more! Test and test and test again. The room below was the one I repainted three times!
Another lesson I learned was from ordering furniture that cannot be returned. Now I know to take a lot of time and take lots of swatches home and measure and measure again and graph it out on paper and get a second opinion or two before taking the plunge and getting custom made furniture!
I once bought a sofa that was too big for our family room. It worked okay, but left little room to move around it. I solved the problem by having it slipcovered and now it’s in our upstairs sitting room. This mistake hurt a little bit more because it was harder to fix, but it was worth the $$ and the time to get it right!
I really want to stress that the biggest decorating blunder you can make is to be afraid to do anything and get stuck! I see this all the time. Don’t let fear of mistakes rob you of a beautiful home that you can create!
Just think most of your decorating decisions have been pretty good! So a mistake once in a while is just part of the process. Don’t get stuck! That’s the biggest mistake of all you can make!
