A new coffee table came to live at StoneGable. It found a home in my family room. I’ve had my eye out lately for a new and more industrial looking coffee table to replace the one I have had in my family room for many years. It’s been quite a search to find one that I think would work with the rest of the family room furniture and decor and at the same time bring a little edgy industrial appeal to the room. Here is the old, sorta cottage looking coffee table…
And here is the new coffee one…
The new coffee table really changed the look of the room! I found this coffee table HERE.
Here are some things I considered when I was looking for my coffee table!
THINK ABOUT USE…
We use our coffee table to set drinks and snacks on when we are watching tv. It is also used as a game table and sometimes even a dining table! When I was looking for a table I wanted it to be big enough to hold a seasonal vignette and maybe some storage. I also did not want to worry about it getting hard use. The reclaimed wood and metal frame will still look good even if we are a bit rough on it!
When considering a new coffee table think about how you will use it!
THINK ABOUT STYLE…
We went from a cottage style coffee table to a table that was a little more trendy. And that one change seemed to take my room in a direction I really like! The reclaimed wood and the industrial metal for the legs and support looks great the other furniture in my family room. I traded the exta storage space I was hoping for and chose those great crossbar supports instead… well worth it! I chose style above function in this case!
Style is a very big consideration when choosing a coffee table! There are so so so many styles to choose from. Do you homework and look at lots and lots of coffee tables. Make a Pinterest board of coffee tables until you can figure out the general look that is pleasing to you.
A coffee table can go a long way to updating an entire room!
THINK ABOUT SIZE…
A coffee table should ideally sit 18 inches away from the sofa and an inch or two lower. My new coffee table is actually an inch or 2 higher than the sofa. I felt I could break this rule because of the openess of the coffee table. It’s not heavy or solid, all things that worked in favor of the coffee table. If it was just one inch taller I think I would have had to retun it!
This coffee table actually fits in the space in front of my sofa better than the old coffee table! It’s a little wider and not quite as long.
A coffee table should fit will into the space in front of a sofa and not crowd a room. It also needs to be proportional to the other furniture around it!
THINK ABOUT PRICE POINT…
The coffee table I chose was not very expensive at all. It is sturdy and well made was just the perfect price to pay for a trendy piece of furniture. Will I keep it for 10 years? Probably not. So I did not want to spend a lot on a coffee table just to add an on-trend style to my family room.
REALLY consider how much you are willing to spend on a piece of furniture and how long you are willing to keep it! This is so important. Many of us spend way too much money on some items and then feel we have to keep them much longer than they have served their purpose to justify our investment. Don’t fall into that decorating trap!
THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU LOVE…
The bottom line is… BUY AND USE WHAT YOU LOVE! I really love this new clean-lined coffee table! It may not check off every box on my ultimate coffee table wish list, but it checks off the most important one… I LOVE HOW IT LOOKS IN MY FAMILY ROOM.
Always, always, always furnish your home with things you LOVE!
What do you think? Would a little fun coffee table freshen up you room?
