Two Important Things to Know Before First

Know Your Decorating Style

Understanding your personal style is crucial for successful Lazy Girl Decorating. It’s not just about following trends or copying what you see in magazines – it’s about creating a space that truly reflects who you are and makes you feel at home. Here’s why knowing your personal style is important and how it can help you become a better decorator…

  • Authenticity: Your home should reflect your personality, interests, and lifestyle. Knowing your personal style will allow you to infuse your space with elements that resonate with you on a deeper level, ensuring that your home feels genuine and true to you.
  • Cohesion: Knowing your personal style helps create a cohesive look throughout your home. When you have a clear vision of what you love and what works for you, it’s easier to make decisions about furniture, colors, and decor that complement each other and create a unified aesthetic. This cohesion contributes to a more polished and put-together space, even if you’re taking a relaxed approach to decorating.
  • Decision-Making: Having a defined personal style streamlines the decision-making process when it comes to decorating. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by endless options, you can filter choices through the lens of your style preferences. This clarity makes it easier to choose furniture, accessories, and finishes that align with your vision, saving you lots of time, energy, money, and angst in the long run.
  • Confidence: Knowing your personal style boosts your confidence as a decorator. When you trust your instincts and preferences, you’re less likely to second-guess yourself or feel unsure about design decisions. Confidence in your style choices allows you to enjoy adding your personality and creativity to your home decor, resulting in a space that feels uniquely yours and brimming with your personal charm.
  • Adaptability: While knowing your personal style provides a solid foundation for decorating, it also leaves room for growth and evolution. Your style may evolve over time as your tastes change, and that’s perfectly okay and normal. By understanding the core elements of your style – what styles, colors, and design patterns resonate with you – you can adapt your decor to reflect your evolving preferences while still maintaining a cohesive look that feels like home.

By embracing your style choices and trusting your instincts, you can decorate with confidence, creativity, and ease, resulting in a space that truly feels like a sanctuary tailored just for you.

Honing In On Your Color Palette

Choosing the right color palette is like laying the foundation for your Lazy Girl Decorating journey. It sets the tone for your space and influences the overall ambiance and aesthetic. Here’s why honing in on your color palette is crucial…

  • Reflects Your Personal Style: Just as knowing your personal style is essential, understanding the color palette you wish to use in your home is equally important. Your color choices should align with your style preferences and resonate with your personality. Whether you’re drawn to soothing neutrals, vibrant pops of color, or a mix of both, your color palette should reflect who you are and what makes you feel at home.
  • Sets the Mood: Colors have a powerful impact on mood and atmosphere. By selecting the right colors for your space, you can create a desired ambiance that enhances the overall feel of your home.
  • Establishes Cohesion: A cohesive color palette ties your decor together and creates visual harmony throughout your home. When your colors flow seamlessly from room to room, it creates a sense of continuity and unity, making your space feel cohesive and well-curated. Whether you opt for a monochromatic scheme or a complementary mix of colors, a consistent palette ensures that every element of your decor feels connected and intentional.
  • Simplifies Decision-Making: Selecting a color palette simplifies the decision-making process when decorating. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by countless color options, you can narrow down your choices to those within your palette, making it easier to coordinate furniture, accessories, and accents. This streamlined approach saves you time and eliminates the guesswork, allowing you to focus on enjoying the decorating process without unnecessary stress.
  • Fosters Versatility: While it’s important to establish a primary color palette, knowing how to play with color allows for versatility and flexibility in your decor. Whether you introduce accent colors through accessories or layer shades within your chosen palette, a nuanced understanding of color enhances your ability to create dynamic and engaging interiors.

By selecting colors that resonate with you, setting the mood you desire, and fostering cohesion and versatility, you can transform your home into a haven of style and comfort, the Lazy Girl way.

Making A Plan: The Blueprint for Successful Decorating

Why We Need To Plan When We Decorate

First and foremost, having a plan eliminates guesswork and uncertainty. It provides a clear roadmap for what you want to accomplish and how you’re going to get there. While having a plan is essential, it should be approached with a relaxed and laid-back mindset.

As we embark on our Lazy Girl Decorating journey, Our decorating guide is designed to simplify the process, not complicate it with overly detailed instructions or rigid timelines. Instead, think of your plan as a loose framework that provides direction and guidance while allowing for flexibility and spontaneity.

A Decorating Plan In Three Easy Steps

  1. Start by defining your goals and priorities for the space you’re decorating. Consider how you want the room to look and feel, how you’ll use it on a daily basis, and any specific functionality or features you want to incorporate.
  2. Gather inspiration from sources like magazines, websites, and social media platforms. Create a mood board or Pinterest board to compile images, colors, textures, and styles that resonate with you and reflect your desired aesthetic. This visual reference will serve as a source of inspiration and guidance as you develop your plan.
  3. Outline the specific steps you’ll take to achieve them. Break down the decorating process into smaller, manageable tasks, such as selecting furniture, choosing paint colors, and accessorize the space. Assign deadlines to each task to keep yourself accountable and on schedule. Deadlines are optional, but they help you move forward and not stall in the decorating process.

Start Slowly And Decorate Smartly

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a well-decorated home. Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, start slowly and gradually add pieces to your space over time.

Decorating a home is a significant undertaking, and trying to tackle everything at once can quickly lead to overwhelm. By starting slowly and focusing on one area or room or even one section of a room at a time, you break the process down into more manageable tasks. This approach allows you to give each space the attention it deserves without feeling bogged down by the enormity of the project.

When you’re not rushed to complete a room in record time, you can make more thoughtful and intentional decisions about your decor. Take the time to research furniture options, experiment with different layouts, and curate accessories that truly resonate with you. By approaching decorating with a slow and deliberate mindset, you’re more likely to create a space that feels curated and authentic to your personal style.

Neutrals Are The Lazy Girl’s Friend And Other Color Palettes

When in doubt, stick to neutrals. Neutral colors like white, beige, and gray are the Lazy Girl’s secret weapon when it comes to decorating.

Not only are neutrals timeless and versatile, but they also create a calm and serene atmosphere that’s perfect for unwinding after a long day. Plus, neutrals provide the perfect backdrop for adding pops of color through accessories and accents, making it easy to change up your decor whenever the mood strikes.

While neutrals serve as a solid foundation for Lazy Girl Decorating, don’t be afraid to decorate your space with colors that speak to your soul. By incorporating colors that reflect your unique style and preferences, you’ll create a home that feels truly personalized and inviting. So go ahead, embrace your favorite shades, and let your color palette reflect the vibrant essence of who you are.

Keep Decorating Simple

Lazy Girl Decorating is all about simplicity and efficiency. Instead of overcomplicating things, focus on finding practical solutions that make your space look great without requiring a lot of time or effort. Choose furniture and decor pieces that are both timelessly stylish and opt for simple, streamlined designs that won’t overwhelm your space.

Less Is Best

When it comes to Lazy Girl Decorating, less is definitely best. Instead of cluttering up your space with unnecessary furniture and accessories, focus on quality over quantity and choose pieces that have meaning and purpose. Keep surfaces clear and uncluttered, choosing to display beautiful accents. By embracing a less-is-more mentality, you’ll create a more peaceful and cohesive environment that’s perfect for relaxing and unwinding.

Create One Focal Point

Every room needs a focal point, and Lazy Girl Decorating is no exception. Whether it’s a statement piece of furniture, a striking piece of artwork, or a beautiful rug, choose one element to serve as the focal point of your space and build the rest of your decor around it. This will help create visual interest and draw the eye into the room, making it feel more cohesive and well-designed.

Use Natural Seasonal Decor

One of the easiest ways to update your decor without a lot of effort is by using natural seasonal decor. Bring the outdoors in with fresh flowers, branches, and greenery, or switch out your throw pillows and blankets for ones in seasonal colors and patterns. Not only will this add a touch of seasonal flair to your space, but it will also help create a cozy and inviting atmosphere that’s perfect for relaxing and entertaining.

Edit Your Room Often and Keep Decor Fresh

Finally, don’t be afraid to edit your decor often and keep things fresh. As your tastes and preferences evolve, so too should your decor. Take the time to regularly assess your space and remove any items that no longer serve a purpose or bring you joy. Experiment with different layouts and arrangements, and don’t be afraid to switch things up until you find what works best for you. By keeping your decor fresh and evolving, you’ll create a home that feels dynamic, vibrant, and truly reflective of your personal style.

Lazy Girl Decorating is all about embracing simplicity, efficiency, and practicality when it comes to home decor. By following these easy tips and tricks, you can create a stylish and comfortable home that reflects your personal style without all the stress and hassle. So, why wait? 1. Thank you Yvonne for this excellent article- it summarizes everything I need to keep reminding myself of — I can tend to get off track and go in too many directions. As you suggest, defining my style and palette and keeping to it simplifies everything

    1. Diane, I can so relate to getting off track. I wrote this post for you… and for me. Let’s be Lazy Girl decorators!

      1. Well thank you for your ongoing design inspiration and guidance. Ive been following your blog for a while now and even after reading your design articles carefully, I then can sometimes spin off in a different direction and so regret the waste of time and money afterwards. But I’m getting better and the new home I moved into 2 1/2 yrs. ago is finally starting to look like home, a home that’s comfortable, welcoming and reflects my “new” style.
I live in Charlotte, NC but grew up in NJ and have fond memories of trips to Lancaster County. How I wish I had easy access to the wonderful farm stands there!!! You are fortunate! But I have a longer growing season- 🙂

        1. Thank you for your nice note, Diane. I wish God’s blessing on you and your new home. It does take a good while to find your style bearings when you move into a different home. It took me three years. I hope the Lazy Girl Guide has helped you.

  2. Thank you so much for your inspiration. This was a great post for me! Do you mind sharing your source for the blue vase and blue cannister on your consol table?

  3. I want to be part of the LG crowd! I’m saving this post forever. It’s full of so much wisdom and inspiration. And it clearly allows for those imperfections I see everywhere in my house. Thanks for so much great advice!

    1. Hi Judy, we all want beautiful, comfortable homes but we also don’t want our home to rule over our time and money and discourage us. I’m glad to know you are and LG too.

  4. Mary Evans says:

Love this article. A nice look with the blue added to your decoration.
You are a very talented designer. Only wish I had a little of it.
Enjoy your Sunday about the Lord. He is good.

Hi Yvonne, I’ve been following your blog for at least 5 years now! I’ve got about 10 boxes of seasonal decor, but every time I get a box out, I only put about half of it out in the house. I’ve become really happy with my white pottery items that go anywhere and if I’m just not feeling a full day of decorating, those white pots and vases make me really happy! Sometimes I keep the unwanted items, sometimes I give it away. I’ve had health issues this last year and I know that ladder climbing and carrying heavy things are in my past. I will probably be simplifying even more! Now, if I can just get hubby to give up that dark brown oversized leather furniture!

    1. Hi Carol, you are so smart to give items you no longer use away. Someone else will love having your seasonal decor to decorate their home. xo
