IT’S ALL ABOUT THE TRAY

Creating a vignette is all about the tray! A vignette will look more organized and cohesive by just putting everything into a contained area!

A tray will give decor on your coffee table boundaries. And our eyes love organized boundaries!

Do this little experiment and see for yourself. Create the same vignette in a tray and then without a tray on your coffee table.

Big difference, right?

That’s why we are creating late summer into fall coffee table decor with a tray!

I like the texture a basket tray lends to a room. But really any tray will do!

USE TEXTURAL ELEMENTS IN A FALL VIGNETTE

Late summer and early fall call for lots of texture. Things that have nubby, chippy and rough textures. We love those textures because they seem “warm” to us.

Here are some rough textures to think about…

  • chippy candlesticks
  • wooden boxes
  • burlap
  • dried organics
  • anything twiggy
  • wooly objects
  • acorns
  • pinecones
  • corks

Also remember to mix wonderful course textures with other textures too. Like something smooth or shiny!

USE RISERS TO GIVE ITEMS DIFFERENT HEIGHTS

Varying heights of things in a coffee table vignette is a very important part of helping a grouping to look attractive.

I love to use textural burlap books to create added height! Just a small stack of books works magic in a vignette.

I cover most of my books with burlap. They are great additions to my decor and I can still read them.

I think the best element to use in a summer to fall or just a fall vignette is something organic and seasonal. Both season have lots of organic things you can use to create a vignette!

Right now my hydrangeas are perfect for cutting. They will dry in their container and look papery and a big sepia tinged for fall!

The hydrangeas in this vignette are saved from last fall! They preserve so well!

USE THE RULE OF THREE

No matter what kind of vignette you create think about using the magic rule of three. Our eyes love items grouped in three’s.

My late summer into fall vignette have items in the tray that are grouped in three’s. Even though there are nine items in the basket our eyes perceive them as three because of the way they are grouped!

Just added some Limelight hydrangeas to my coffee table vignette which is still primarily beachy. The flowers just freshen up the whole room and give it a bit of a late summer feel.
