MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS DECORATION IDEAS 2020

VERTICAL COAT RACK DECORATED WITH CHRISTMAS ITEMS

Every year I have some areas in our home and some Christmas decoration ideas that are my favorite. Do you have favorites too! You do? Then I’m not the only one! Here are my top 10 favorite decoration ideas for Christmas 2020!

Decorating is all about details and no season has more fabulous details than Christmas!

Have you ever thought about making a list of what decorating ideas were your favorites this year? I’d love to share some of yours in the comments so we can all be inspired!

Let’s dig right in!

Here are my top 10…

CHRISTMAS DECORATING IDEA #10- THE DINING AREA PENDANT LAMP

This Christmas I used snowy greens and big pinecones to decorate our home.

I bought 4 new garlands and cut them apart to use throughout the house. I’ve used the same greens for a l-o-n-g time so these pretty new greens were a welcome change.

On a whim I added a halo of greens with attached pinecones around the top of our basket pendant. And I was surprised how nice it looked in this modestly decorated area!

#9- PILLOWS ON OUR MASTER BEDROOM BED

One of the simple pleasures in life, for me, is going into our bedroom and seeing a well-made bed! It makes me feel like all is well with the world.

I think I get this from my mother. I don’t think I have ever seen her bed unmade when she was not in it. EVER!

This year I loved the pillows on our bed. They were not overtly Christmassy but hinted at the season instead.

Part of my pillow love this Christmas was the color palette and the luxury feel of Mongolian hides and velvet.

I’m going to remember just how much I liked the white/citron green/brown combination too!

#8- AN EASY CHRISTMAS DECORATING IDEA FOR THE STAIRS

Oh, I could lose my decorating confidence over my stairs. There is just so much I really don’t like about them!

However, decorating them for Christmas proved to be easier than I thought.

At first, I was not going to decorate them at all. And then I was only going to decorate the newel post. But not too heavily!

Then I saw a beautiful way to add a bit of Christmas to stairs by not adding garland! Instead, I saw a Pinterest image of a few candles placed on some steps of a staircase.

So I ran with this idea! At first I just added candles. And then I added some little faux trees.

Who knew the staircase would make the 10 ten Christmas decoration ideas this year?

#7- THE CHRISTMAS MANTEL

I think I like this year’s mantel for lots of reasons.

  • I like asymmetrical things
  • The faux green garlands were really lovely
  • I styled my mantel and then added “phase2”
  • The green colors are my favorite
  • “O, Come Let Us Adore Him” sign says what Christmas is really all about

You can see the original CHRISTMAS MANTEL 2020 HERE.

After I had styled the mantel I added stockings to it and hung them the easy way!

FAVORITE CHRISTMAS DECORATING IDEA #6- THE TABLETOP TREE

This was the second year I added a tabletop tree to our Christmas decor. And I just can’t see every not having one now.

First, this little tree added so much Christmas cheer and sparkle and pretty lights to our sunroom and I put our small Nativity under it.

And I also greatly enjoy decorating this tree! It’s not a huge commitment! I sorta like decorating that is not a huge commitment!

You can see how I decorated this tree last year and a step by step DIY HOW TO DECORATE A TABLETOP TREE LIKE A DESIGNER.

#5- SNOW VILLAGE SCENE

When you put something under glass and sprinkle snow all around it something magical happens!

And this little snowy village was such an easy Christmas decoration to put together!

All I used was a couple of WHITE PAINTED CARDBOARD HOUSES WITH SILVER LEAF ROOFS, some fairy lights, bottle brush trees, a pair of cake pedestals, ornaments and of course snow!

Every time I look at it it makes me sigh!

#4- THE BIG TREE

I have a little confession to make about the tree in this picture. It’s not really done.

I thought it was when I took these pictures, but I added more “stuff” to the tree! And it looks ten times better!

I’ll make sure I get a few images of the new and improved tree out to you in my newsletter in a day or two.

I think I like this tree because I LOVE the colors this year! Don’t those green Christmas balls demand attention?

Unlike the tabletop tree our big tree took two days to decorate and it was a huge commitment. But it was so much fun to see it take shape.

FAVORITE CHRISTMAS DECORATING IDEA #3- THE VERTICAL COAT RACK

I’ve had a lot of fun decorating the vertical coat rack that hangs near our front door in the foyer this year.

Usually, this coat rack is reserved for grab-and-go baskets or coats of guests. But company and entertaining are virtually nonexistent this year so I’ve been decorating the coat rack instead.

I really like this vertical area! It’s adds a bit of the season when I walk in my front door.

#2- EASY CHRISTMAS ARRANGEMENTS

I’ve make so many USE WHAT YOU HAVE ARRANGEMENTS this year!

I put these arrangements in a tray or basket I have on hand. And then add two or three other elements I also have.

They are addictive, are super easy to put together and make my home Christmas ready.

This has been the Christmas of the USE WHAT YOU HAVE CHRISTMAS ARRANGEMENTS.

FAVORITE CHRISTMAS DECORATION IDEA #1- STARS AND SNOWFLAKES

My very favorite Christmas decoration this year are the stars and snowflakes hanging in our foyer!

I don’t think the pictures does this area justice. It looks so so magical!

The stars and snowflakes gently turn. The heat from the fireplace rises and moves over the loft and down into the foyer and causes the stars and snowflakes to gently dance!

I’ll definitely put these up again next year! This may be a Tanglewood tradition!

There are my top 10 Christmas decoration ideas!

Now it’s your turn. What have been your favorite Christmas decorating ideas in your home this year?

Thanks for sharing! Can’ t wait to see the new step area.
My favorite is your use of the green and the village!
Peeking up the steps it appears something tall at the top would enhance your look.
Listen to me telling you how to decorate. Sorry! What do I know?
Stay just as great as you are. Happy holidays!

    1. Hi Nan, the upstairs loft is not finished yet. So be patient with me. And thank you!!!

    2. CarolbinTX says:

I made the snow village this year and put it in my office. The lights are on a timer and they come on about 9 am and off at 4 p.m. when I’m working. Such a happy little thing!

  2. Beautiful Christmas decorating! I’d love to know the source of your coat rack. I have a beautiful one I purchased but it stands and I like the idea of wall mounted.

Sure hard to choose, but, guess I like the entry way best. Would like to ask a question tho, where did you get the white coverlet in the master bedroom, also the citron green pillow. would love it for my MB. Stay Safe

    1. Both the coverlet and the citron pillow came from Pottery Barn. I don’t see them online right now. Sorry.

  6. Where did you acquire the pine cone and acorn ornaments on the tabletop trees? I simply love those!!

    1. Hi Jan, sorry I don’t have a source for these. I found them locally.

  7. Would you mind sharing the source for your basket pendant light? I have been looking for one but have not been able to find one. Thank you.

Your comment about getting a bed made each morning brought back fond memory for me. I hated, pure hated, having to make my bed each morning but as a child of the 50s and 60s parents ruled and what they said went! I begrudgingly made the bed, every morning. A sloppy college room mate cured me. I could not stand seeing her unmade bed, clothes strewed everywhere, etc. Years and 2 marriages went by. My last husband ( deceased now) commented to me one day “Why do you make the bed every day”? I explained as above. Several months passed when one night he told me ” You know, neither of my other wives (2) made the bed every day and I didn’t either. I want you to know how much I appreciate the difference every night when I climb turn back the covers and climb into smoothed sheets”. I had never had a nicer compliment! Mothers are always right! Thank you and Merry Christmas to you and yours!

    1. It does make a huge difference when you get into bed at night. You are so right!

  9. i thoroughly enjoy the arrival of your emails. I am secretly hoping you will surprise us one day and have a pop of red or something, but it is so visually soothing.
can you tell me where you got your tabletop tree and also your stars and snowflakes.
    i quickly scrolled to the bottom . . . but alas…

i wish you the best in your new home. 2020 has been a crap year for all of us. My 54 year old husband was diagnosed with leukemia to go along with his traumatic brain injury from a motorcycle accident in 2014 which left him in a coma for 53 days. We are not short on challenges, but we love our montana log home and i am trying to decorate it in hopes of getting us in the holiday spirit. Sort of like, ‘if you build it, they will come’
thank you for letting me rant…..
    JaLea

    1. Hi JaLea, I hope 2021 is better for all of us. God bless you and your husband! The snowflakes can be seen here: https://amzn.to/2KsXuTI, I found the stars at West Elm last year and the tabletop tree came from Balsam Hill.

Please tell me where I can find the stars on your post on the staircase. They are lovely!
    Merry Christmas!

    1. Thanks for letting me know! So nice to hear you found inspiration here.

  13. Love your ideas!! Your home is beautiful. Where did you find the bells on your coat rack?

    1. Hi Elizabeth, I just got them this year. They are so rustic and make a big statement. I found them at Wayfair but they are out of stock right now. Sorry!

  14. It’s so funny that my least favorite snowflakes are your number one fave. I love love love everything else. Perfection!

  15. Carol Benchouia says:

I love anything made of mercury glass and my vintage glass ornaments. I’ve been collecting them for years, they remind me of our Christmas trees growing up. I even save the broken ones, as I’m going to one day use your idea of filling the clear glass ornaments with the pieces! Last year, I bought a 3 foot tall red mercury glass and when I got it out of the closet to place it in my window the base broke off! I found a solution to hold up the rest of the tree (a gold painted and textured pot), but now I have a lot of material for the broken glass ornaments…maybe next year!

    1. Oh, the broken mercury glass will be gorgeous as broken glass ornaments.

  16. Linda Kay Mathews says:

I am a little slow! I found the previous snowflake answer and order 2 packs! Thank you!
I am a gift and flower retail worker and then owner so am always changing things up!
