HOW TO CHOOSE PILLOWS FOR YOUR HOME

how to choose the perfect pillows

Let’s talk PILLOWS!! It’s one of my favorite topics. Let’s talk about how to choose pillows and patterns and colors. Should we buy two like pillows if they are solid, and one if it’s patterned? Do size and shape have anything to do with our buying decisions? It’s all about choosing the perfect pillows!  My post today was inspired by an email I got from one of my fabulous readers! Here’s what she said…

Hi Yvonne – I just love your blog! You have a beautiful home. I do have a question that I don’t think I’ve seen you address regarding pillows. When you purchase throw pillows (and covers), what makes you decide to purchase just one versus a set of two? I thought maybe the more solid, neutral pillows you purchased a set, but then I noticed a few patterned pillows that you had in sets. I’m trying to decide on keeping a set of patterned pillows or just one as a “statement” on the sofa. Your answer is appreciated!

What a great question! I’ll try to answer it in this post and offer a few rule-of-thumb tips too. Let’s talk about choosing perfect pillows!

Should I buy one or two pillows in the same pattern or stye? Important questions answered about choosing the perfect pillow.

WHEN TO BUY A PAIR OF PILLOWS

I think it’s a smart idea to buy/make two pillows or pillow covers as a set if they are square. Especially if they are 18 inches or larger.

Why two? It’s all about balance. Balance is an interior design concept that once you know about it and how to use it will help you create so much in creating beauty in a room. And balance will certainly help you create beautiful pillow arrangements! You can see ELEMENTS OF DESIGN… BALANCE here.

PAIRING SQUARE PILLOWS ADDS TO THE BEAUTY OF A ROOM

One of the super powers of pillows is the way they change the look of a room. A pair of pillows gives you so many options to spread this amazing pillow decor power around your home!

BUYING PILLOWS IN PAIRS HELPS THE BALANCE IN A ROOM

There are exceptions, but my general advice is to buy two pillows if they are squares!

When I buy just one pillow it has to…

SINGLE PILLOW CLOSE UP
  • be so fabulously beautiful I just can’t resist it
  • work with many of my other pillows
  • be a lumbar or other shape pillows (not square)
  • happen in a moment of weakness (and we have all had those)

LUMBAR AND OTHER PILLOWS

ONE LUMBAR PILLOW IN A GROUP OF PILLOWS

When it comes to a rectangular pillow, such as a lumbar, I usually buy one! They work in the center of a sofa, they fit on a chair (depending on the size) and look great placed on a bed in front of other pillows.

A LUMBAR PILLOW ON A BED ADDS BEAUTY TO A BED

One of the rare times I get two lumbar pillows is when I know I will use them on a set of chairs.

Rectangular pillows come in lots of sizes, just like square pillows!

You really only need one round or uniquely shaped pillow. They look fun on a chair, sofa, or even a bed. But a little goes a long way.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT PILLOW

Choosing perfect pillows is all about common sense and sense of style! It’s not hard to know how many pillows to choose if you follow the guidelines above.

  1. I love the blue floral that has been appearing in your recent posts. Any chance it is something that you purchased recently? And if so, where did you get it? I haunt your blog daily, and incorporate my own spin on your ideas often in my decor choices
