I love to see how decor in a home changes over time. And it’s always interesting to see how my favorite bloggers update and change the rooms in their homes! So I thought you might like to see how our foyer has evolved along with my style since we first moved into Tanglewood.
Today my good blogging friends Ann from On Sutton Place and Lory from Designthusiam are joining me as we share our foyers and the changes they have gone through. We are all “rightsizers” as Lory puts it. And this is part of the Downsizing Series we are doing together. Make sure you visit their foyers! Their links are at the end of this post.
The rooms at Tanglewood seem to go through lots and lots of changes! Partly because the style of this house is quite different from StoneGable and partly because I’m still trying to find a balance between an open concept home and the furnishings that work best in it. And getting used to a new downsized home is a bit more of a challenge than I thought it would be!
I just made a few new changes to our foyer, again, and thought you might like to see how the foyer has changed in the last two and almost a half years.
Let me just refresh your memory and show you the foyer at StoneGable…
I struggled with the rooms in StoneGable too! But after living there for 24 years I could almost decorate our farmhouse in my sleep!
Our foyer at StoneGable was large and spacious and open on one end to the living room and the other end to the dining room.
Over the years I had refined my farmhouse style to be less chippy and rustic and more upscale and neutral.
When we moved into our Tanglewood house the decorating learning curve was steep, especially in the foyer!
OUR NEW FOYER, OCTOBER 2019
Here is how the foyer looked on the October day we moved to Tanglewood in 2019.
The foyer is L-O-N-G! Twenty-two feet long and opens up to our living room. However, I consider the first portion from the front door to the square posts the real foyer!
I was so busy with the rest of our home I really did not give much thought to foyer decorating for quite a while.
SPRING FOYER DECORATING 2020?
Here is how the foyer looked in the spring of 2020, five months after we moved in.
We added a small jute rug and a large signed with Numbers 33 printed on it and a vertical coat hook. I added the big jug with spring branches to the foyer just to make it look a bit like spring.
And what you don’t see in this image, but will later, we added a new chandelier.
SUMMER 2020
Seven months after we moved in the foyer looked almost the same. I just added some summer flowers to the baskets hanging on the vertical hooks.
ALMOST FALL 2020
In August of 2020, 10 months after we moved in I added a bench to the foyer. I like this look because it is not crowded and gave me a great spot for our grandbabies to take their shoes off and on. And it was a fun little spot for me to decorate.
CHRISTMAS 2020 IN THE FOYER
Christmastime 2020 brought a few changes. I brought up a 5×7 jute rug from the basement which gave the foyer a softer look. And I changed out the black bench for a white one (again down in the basement) with a white cushion.
And I added small baskets under the bench for little shoes.
SPRING 2021
A garden stool was added next to the bench in the spring of 2021. And I also added a long cheetah pillow to the bench.
SUMMER 2021
The bench got a new custom upholstered cushion in the summer of 2021.
MORE FOYER DECORING IN FALL 2021
Fall of 2021 brought big changes for the foyer.
I started to move away from almost anything farmhouse style and really embraced Transitional style. And I added a bit of color to the foyer with the citron oriental rug! Looking back on these images I might have moved a bit too far!
Adding the white console was a good move though! It made the foyer feel more refined. I brought up a cross-back French Bistro chair from the basement and bought a new lamp.
CHRISTMAS 2021
I only added seasonal decor to our foyer for Christmas of 2021. But I ordered something new for the foyer and was waiting for it to come in!
WINTER 2022
In the winter of 2022, I changed out the cross back chair for a small white linen slipcovered chair from the living room.
I also added a small concave mirror to the left side of the console.
LATE WINTER 2022
The mirror I bought before Christmas finally arrived. I love this mirror!
I replace the green oriental with a rug hooked indoor/outdoor rug I’ve had for almost a decade and brought back the garden stool.
I like how the wooden mirror adds contrast and texture to the foyer. And is juxtaposed to the white console table.
SPRING 2022
I decided I liked the sisal rug in the foyer, so I brought it up from the basement, again! I tend to switch my decor around!
Because I was now using a sisal rug I switched out the brown basket on the bottom shelf of the console for a duo of lighter colored baskets with lids.
And I added touches of spring decor to the foyer.
SUMMER 2022
I’ve added a couple things to the foyer this summer.
The most noticeable is the zebra rug. It came with us from StoneGable and I was just waiting for the right place to put it. I’m really hoping in the near future to move to the living room, but until then it’s a fun addition to the foyer. What a welcome, right?
I also added a couple plates to the left side of the mirror. The monogram is a decal and it adds a fun detail.
And of course, I decorated lightly for the summer season.
That brings you up to date with all the changes in the foyer.
WHAT WE HAVE LEFT TO DO
The biggest thing we have left to do in the foyer is to install hardwood floors. I’ve gone back and forth for two years and finally have decided that I really can’t live any longer with the tile in the foyer! Now all I have to do is convince Bobby.
The other big project will affect the loft. The front part of the foyer is open to the loft above the foyer. We are having new spindles and newel posts and railing installed. So most of the oak wood will be going! Yay!
I’m sure I’m not done with decorating the foyer but it is looking more and more like me!

Looking forward to the wood floors you’ll be adding. One thing you kept constant that truly helped me today was your coat/hat rack. I have one that I just can’t seem to figure out how to use since I have few hats nor does anyone I know need a place to hang theirs BUT I do have a straw tote and flowers plus wicker baskets that have no home as they are too small…thank you Yvonne!! I love all your designs you created. I think the green hydrangeas with the green rug was my favorite though…I love green!

I love to play around changing up my decor for the seasons, too. Bringing your zebra rug is perfect. It adds some oomph to the space. The only thing that bothers me is the lamp on risers. The vase is tiny in comparison. Do you think a bigger vase would balance better? ?
It really is interesting to see how the change of styles and types of furniture and influence and impact our living environments. I so enjoy seeing the changes and makes me rethink my own environment.
I fall in love with your decorating styles, and then you change the design, but then I like it just as well, if not better. You love to be in a constant world of change and have fun with it! This is a chore with me.
I loved the evolution of the foyer. I most loved the citron orientalist rug – what life it brought to the space! But of course, green is my favorite color.

I do change decor on the little chest that I have in my very small foyer, but no way could I change out furniture! I have NO storage options!

Yvonne, I just love how you move things around your home and you have taught me well. When I do move some things around my husband always asks if that is new! I love how things just look refreshed.
