KEEP IT SIMPLE

A FOYER CONSOLE WITH WHITE TREES ON IT

Before we get into all the fun and festive Christmas decorating ideas let’s be a little practical first.

No matter how small or large your foyer or entryway is it’s important to make sure your holiday decor is simple so it does not get in the way of what a foyer is used for.

Oh, if you are like me and really love making a foyer pretty, especially at Christmastime, it’s hard to think of practical things! If left to my own devices I would over decorate it every time. So I try to remember that above all a foyer must be functional first!

Let’s talk about successful Christmas foyer decorating ideas and keep our foyers and entryways still very usable for family and guests who come to visit us through our Christmas front door!

WHAT IS THE CHRISTMAS COLOR FOR 2021?

I say over and over again that any decorating starts with a few things. And one is a color palette.

FOYER DECORATED FOR CHRISTMAS

What is your Christmas color palette this year? If you answer “I don’t know” or “same as always” then you might want to think a bit more about the colors you are adding to your home at Christmas. Many of us like a cozy but also designer Christmas look. You can have both by paying attention to the colors you are using in your home this holiday.

This year’s Christmas colors are all over the color wheel! They are soft and light like my foyer or beautiful traditional red and green. Deep purples and jewel tones seem to be ever popular choices for Christmas decor and this year navy blue and red will probably be the IT colors!

One of my best Christmas decorating ideas is to create a color palette for your home this holiday season. It will make every room in your home easier to decorate, including the foyer.

And it’s amazing how color can spread Christmas cheer! Color has such an effect on the way we feel.

My Christmas color palette this year revolves around soft neutrals and greens, especially citron green. I used citron green last year but this year I’m using more white with it.

Choosing a color palette gives me a direction. So all my Christmas decor must be in the color palette I have chosen.

The foyer offers my friends and family the first glimpse of what colors to expect in my home this holiday! Easy, right?

COORDINATE WITH EVERYDAY DECOR

Your Christmas colors and all your other Christmas decorations should coordinate and fit into your everyday decor.

TABLE FILLED WITH LITTLE WHITE TREES AND ORNAMENTS

Use Christmas decor that works with what you already have.

This will make Christmas decorating so so easy! If Christmas decorations don’t look nice with your everyday decor don’t use them. It’s just that simple.

Our foyers and entryways should not only be a welcoming first glimpse of our homes, but they should also set the tone for what lies beyond.

This summer I added a more traditional light green rug to the foyer. I am loving the citron and spring green in the rug. Adding this rug shows off a big dose of the color pop I’m using in our home right now! And it was one of the big reasons I chose citron green as part of my Christmas color palette.

WIDE VIEW OF A FOYER DECORATED FOR CHRISTMAS

In our foyer, I have a long console table that I decorate with seasonal things. The console table is white and rather transitional in style and makes a great stage for almost any season decor I want to use!

I also have a chair and a vertical coat hook in the foyer.

And I did not move any furniture around when I decorated for Christmas I just added my tree collection and a few other touches of greenery and ornaments.

For me, a cleaner and more simple Christmas look that is less layered and a whole lot less fussy is more my style! So I keep things rather tidy and less cluttered!

ADD SOME GREENS OR GARLAND TO YOUR CHRISTMAS FOYER

One of the easiest Christmas foyer decorating ideas is to use greenery!

FOYER DECORATED FOR CHRISTMAS

Add some greens like garland or Christmas wreaths or sprigs of evergreens and other Christmas greenery to your foyer decorations.

If you have room, a small Christmas tree with lights would be a beautiful addition too! I just might add a little white Christmas tree with lights to the left side of the foyer this week.

For my Christmas foyer, I used the vertical coat hook to hang a basket with pretty white pine boughs and other faux greens in it. Although I love the aroma of real pine, it is just too messy! So I’m mostly using faux greenery in our home.

I cut apart a pine garland and used a section of it in the basket along with a large snowy pinecone. I might add a couple more pinecones and a few ornaments hanging on velvet citron green ribbons to the basket arrangement too. Sometimes I don’t know when enough is enough!

I can keep my faux pine and other faux greenery hanging in the basket until the New Year!

On the foyer table, I added three gilded bowls holding faux boxwood balls to the bottom shelf of the console table to continue the greenery in the foyer.

It’s important to repeat elements when we decorate. Our minds see this as attractive. Repeating elements is a good thing to remember as you decorate for Christmas.

These pretty bowls came from a local shop. They are gilded on the outside and pottery on the inside. I like them so much I’m planning on getting several more this week.

No matter the size of your foyer try to make room for Christmas greens, real or faux.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTING FOR THE FOYER

FOYER USING BEST CHRISTMAS DECORATING IDEAS

Christmas lights make everything look magical!

And you don’t need an outlet to use Christmas lights in your foyer. Many sets of lights and other Christmas items light up using batteries.

I’m using several mini Christmas trees that light up and give the foyer a beautiful soft glow!

Think about adding lights to garland, or a wreath, or any other Christmas greenery in your foyer!

Or you might like to add pretty warm white lights to a bowl of Christmas ornaments. The light reflects off the shiny balls!

ORNAMENTS IN A BOWL

The ornaments I chose to use in the bowl in the center of the table are some of my favorites made from mercury glass. And the lights are gold cut-out globes.

At the base of the pedestal bowl is a large golden ornament that is really a three-wick candle with a lovely Christmas aroma.

CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS IN A BOWL

I’ve used this candle for several years, just lighting it on Christmas Eve. It’s a fun tradition.

MINI CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION

I am not much of a collector. However, I do collect Christmas trees! If you have been reading StoneGable for any time you will recognize many of them because my little trees have been in almost every room of our StoneGable and Tanglewood homes during Christmas!

This year I thought I’d add holiday cheer to our foyer by using some of them on the table.

WHITE TREES ON A CONSOLE

This idea just might work for you too! Do you have a Christmas collection? If you do and have a table in your foyer you could display your collection en masse there! What fun Christmas entryway decor!

I am most fond of my white, mercury glass, and lighter colored trees. So I chose several for the foyer and arranged them on either side of the bowl of ornaments.

LITTLE WHITE TREES ON A TABLE

The bottom shelf holds my very favorite paper trees. I found these a few years ago. You can see this year’s paper Christmas trees from West Elm below.

Won’t the mini trees give a cheery Christmas welcome to all who enter?

Love the lamp, but the website won’t open. Where did you get it?

    1. I found it at Kirkland’s and I think they no longer are a part of our affiliate links.

  2. Hi Yvonne,
I love your ideas for your foyer! I particularly like the color-palette. My foyer is rather dark – grey floor tiles, a dark grey door and very little natural light – so I can imagine that shades of white and a touch of silver will work very well.
I also collect little christmas tree ornaments, btw. and yours are adorable!

Forgive my presumption, but I think a satin wide ribbon, maybe two in. wide, in the same color as your green pilliw in your chair, tied to look like a pkg. would look festive in your foyer. You are a classy lady!.

  4. MARY-ANN (FROM CANADA!) says:

Yvonne, your foyer table is just beautiful with all your Christmas decor! I love those pretty ornaments you put in your bowl! You always do such a great job with your decor and have given all of us so many great ideas. Thanks, Yvonne!

    1. Thanks, Mary Ann! My goal is to inspire my readers (like YOU) and help give them ideas for decorating their own home.

  5. I decided quite some time ago to decorate my home for the “season” instead of a particular “holiday”, and I started with doing whites and a winter wonder land on my mantel. With a couple of tweaks I can keep the mantel decorating for several months during the winter.

  6. Love the rug and your decor together. I bet the foyer is gorgeous all lit up at night too. Just beautiful!

  7. Yvonne – your foyer looks so beautiful decorated for Christmas! I love the light bright look and I especially love your tree collection… 🙂

  8. Just love all your beautiful Christmas decorations. I so enjoy your emails. I live in Australia. Have a beautiful Christmas.???

    1. Hi Maria, it must be getting warm where you are! Thank you! I’m thrilled you are enjoying the newsletters.

  9. I have loved you from afar for so long. Your taste is so lovely! I have looked everywhere for citron green ribbon, ornaments, and pillow covers. Could you share I could find them? I also love your lamp in the entryway. When I clicked on that picture, it said “oops, something went wrong!” So I have o idea where to shop for that lamp that my room is calling for! Thanks! Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

    1. As for the lamp, it came from Kirklands. They do not have affiliate links anymore so that is why you saw that message. I found the green pillow on Wayfair and the citron ornaments locally. And I get much of my ribbon from Etsy and Amazon. Hope this helps. Happy Thanksgiving, Beth!

  10. YOU ARE SO TALETED AND HAVE THE GIFT OF CREATIVITY.THANK YOU.

  11. Your home looks lovely! Can you tell me where you sourced your large area rugs? I saw several others along with the citron green one.

  12. Hi!
Your front entryway is very welcoming.
We ask our visitors to remove their shoes when they enter our home. We have designated areas in the entryway for the shoes to be stored. We use Ballards decorative shoe/boot trays. How do you handle this? Where do you put coats?

    1. We have a small coat closet just past the area shown. Our foyer is very long so there is lots of space for a coat closet.
