WINTER WONDERLAND TABLESCAPE

Do you decorate around a certain theme every Christmas? I do, and this year’s theme is Winter Wonderland. I’m using lots of white and a bit of gold and silver. And lots and lots of tiny lights and candles. This year at StoneGable Christmas is going glam! I can’t wait to show you this year’s Christmas decor. So to start off the holiday I set a Winter Wonderland tablescape. It’s over the top and sparkly and just for you! And I have lots of ideas for setting a beautiful table and a festive mood too!

Today I’m part of

A big THANK YOU to Cindy at Rough Lux Lifestyle and Mary Ann at Classic Casual Home and Annie at Mostly Lovely Things. I’m thrilled to be part of this beautiful group of bloggers! Make sure to check out their tables at the end of this post.

As I mentioned above this year’s Christmas decorating theme is Winter Wonderland. And just choosing a theme and color scheme (white, gold, silver) helps me focus on choosing the right decor essentials when I decorate. It is also very helpful in creating a cohesive look! You can read more about it in my post 10 THINGS TO DO FOR CHRISTMAS NOW.

Today’s table is what I call a fantasy table. A bit outrageous and flamboyant and bit of whimsy. But it is also filled with tons of ideas you can use for your own table!

My first tip when setting any table is to use lots of candles. It makes a table magical! I adore the warm, golden look it gives a table, especially a white one! Use votives that are low to the table and tall candlesticks with long tapers and something in between. The prettiest tables are set with candlelight at different levels!

Because my table is concrete and a gray neutral I often will opt out of using a tablecloth or placemats. I chose snow as the foundation of this wintry Christmas table! It’s so fun and romantic and a bit messy! And totally unexpected!

One of the biggest secrets to a beautifully set table is to mix and match dinnerware, silverware, and glasses.

For this table, I have two different white plates, a leaf and berry charger and an embossed banded dinner plate. I prefer dishes with interesting edges! I get asked about the leaf and berry dishes more than any other. If you like them you can find out about them HERE.

You can’t tell from this picture but I have three different types of silverplated flatware on this table. I think it makes the whole dining experience so fun! Silverplate is very inexpensive these days. Most vintage shops, tag sales, and auctions have silverplate in droves! You can often buy them as a complete set in a pretty chest or collect them piece by piece for just a couple dollars.

This is just a personal pet peeve but please polish any silver used to eat with on your table. I find the thought of putting something grody in my mouth so unappealing!  I know patina is a stunning thing to behold. Behold yes, eat with NO!

I’m not much of a collector. But I do collect little Christmas trees that are bottle brush, glass or mercury glass and mercury glass candlesticks.
I have a penchant for grouping like things down the middle of my dining room table. The pictures do not do my table justice. Think about collecting something so they can be a repeated element on your table.

How sweet to place little bottle brush trees at each place setting! When my guests go home they can take the trees with them. I think giving guests something meaningful to take home gives them a tangible memory of an evening at StoneGable.

It’s not so much the gift but the carefully thought out blessing in the take-home gift!

Here are some other no-fail tips for setting a gorgeous Christmas table and evening…
  • beauty can be simple as well as ornate
  • use silver flatware and serving pieces
  • set the mood with Christmas music
  • put out a buffet (even for the most formal dinners) so everyone can get up and mingle a bit
  • put a drink station or bar in a convenient central area (I use my foyer)
  • create a dessert station with plates, forks and extra napkins on it
  • if someone asks to help say YES
  • take lots of pictures and send them to your group of guest
  • if you have a large enough area encourage dancing after dinner (our foyer is a great dancefloor)
  • sit people who don’t know each other together… no couples sitting together
  • don’t eat and run… linger and ask questions that promote lots of happy conversation
  • make sure everyone can see over or between the centerpiece (do as I say, not as I do)
  • sit guests in a comfortable chair (I move out my bench and use ghost chairs)
  • have club soda on hand along with white cotton cloths for spills
  • be the best guest at your table… have fun!
  • think about buying gourmet food instead of cooking to cut down on holiday stress

Christmas is the most festive time of the year! Plan a get-together and set a pretty table!

Do you ever wonder what goes on behind the camera the day of a photo shoot? Well, guess no more head HERE to see behind the scenes of this tablescape photo shoot!

  1. I just think this table looks stunning, how wonderful to sit and enjoy family and friends amongst such a display..x

  2. Leota Mayr says:

Absolutely stunning! You have such an eye for beauty and a talent for putting items together and creating a work of art. I love these pictures!

  3. Gorgeous, like candy for the eyes. I like to add a few bits from my jewelry box to my tree and decor especially things I no longer wear. Glitzy broaches and chains add a nice touch.

  4. Incredibly elegant! Such a beautiful combination of textures!

  5. The table is gorgeous. I think I would spend all my time looking at all the elements rather that eating! I also use trees and for my napkins use a fold that looks like a tree. I add a star at the top and write each guests name to serve as the place card. Unfortunately all the links to your friends tables did show any holiday tables?

  6. Tammy Roberts says:

    Absolutely gorgeous!!

  7. Theresa at Winterberry Lane says:

Yvonne , you have out done yourself! I absolutely love your Winter wonderland tablescape. Awesome!!!

  8. Such a beautiful table setting. Love the neutral color combined with the subtle accent colors. It looks so inviting.

  9. Nan, Odessa, DE says:

questions: when using a buffet, when do you say the grace?
Give examples of decorating the buffet, drink, dessert stations.
    No table cover for dinner?
What is the white paper flecks on your table? Where do I buy it?
    Your room is lovely!

    1. Nan! I love all your questions. We often sit around the table and say grace or stand around the buffet, hold hands and say grace. I really should do a post on how to set up a buffet, drink and dessert station!
The white flecks are snow, faux snow!

Hi Yvonne, what a gorgeous dining room you have! I particularly LOVE your concrete dining table. And it is simply stunning how you achieved a monochromatic look with your tablescape using variations on white, silver, and shimmer, such a beautiful combination. My favorite takeaway from your post today is the suggestion to use candlelight at varying heights. BRILLIANT! I would love to see your table all lit up at night!

    1. Cecilia what a thrill to be touring with you and the other beautiful women today! I LOVE your name, it is my middle name and I so wish my mom would have made it my first.

      1. Celia Becker says:

OMG, I never meet other people with my name! We must truly be kindred spirits!

  11. Michele M says:

Your table is stunning, Yyvonne! The *only* tip I have for this incredibly lovely post is that I wish you had also included an evening shot with low lights and candle and twinkles a’glowin’!

Thank you for your beautiful inspiration. God be with you these next busy weeks – hard to even wrap my head around it being that time of year already. Where has this gone??!!

  12. Debbra L Weber says:

Beautiful table! I’m inspired from your Winter Wonderland theme and the winter wonderland we have with beautiful big flakes of snow falling outside. Where did you purchase your flakes of snow on your table?

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. I found them at Pottery Barn years ago. They are actually shreds of white plastic and they look amazing in real life. So I save them from year to year!

      1. Cheryl S Harrison says:

How do you keep your cat out of the plastic snow? My silly kitty would probably eat it.

        1. Hobbes is a very very good boy! It is not in his nature. He is more like a dog than a cat.

  13. If silver plate is well cared for it will last for decades. Years ago I started to use my mother’s set which had not been touched for years. It was black and looked ready for the rubbish. But because I was giving a dinner for my husband’s boss and his wife, I decided to start polishing the set a few pieces at a time. Initially I did only enough for the four place settings. I ended up doing the whole set, it looked brand new and just like the real thing. For years I would drag this back and forth from my mom’s house until one day she told me to keep it, that I had cared for it and used it far more than she ever did. To me there’s nothing better than sitting down at the holidays with gleaming silverware that was hers. Now I store it with a specially treated cloth that minimizes the amount of polish needed, as the silver plate can be brought down to the base metal with too much polishing.

    1. You are a girl after my own heart Margo! If you lived near me I bet we would be BFF’s!

  14. Beautiful tablescape. I love all of the mercury glass. 🙂

  15. Linda Gardepe says:

Your table is just GORGEOUS!!! I do have a question about what you used. What are the white stick like things in your silver bowl with balls and in your hurricanes, I just love them?
thank you for your wonderful blog.

    1. Hi Linda, they are from a garland that I found years ago. I loved the look so I cut it up and usually put these “stylized snowballs” in my tree but they fund a place on my table!

  16. classic casual home says:

HOW MAGICAL! The snow and candles make the table feel so special…as I am sure your guests will feel. Love all your tips…especially the dancing after dinner. At my sister’s house in San Diego (where we spend a lot of holidays) we often crank up the music and dance outside on her patio. I also like: if someone asks to help say YES. It makes everyone feel included…and less work (especially with the dishes 🙂
Thanks for doing this with us, Yvonne! You are awesome.

    1. Mary Ann! I am so thrilled to be with all of you MAGNIFICENT bloggers! You girls are just amazing!

  17. Christine says:

Absolutely gorgeous! White and silver, shiny and textural has been my favorite Christmas decorating for several years now, but you take first prize. Stunning!

  18. So pretty and magical! It feels light and airy but yet substantial. Great job!

  19. Beautiful as always! BTW, the link to The Polished Pebble brings you to a March of 2017 post. In fact, there are no 2018 posts listed. OOPS!

  20. Jill Miglin says:

As always, absolutely beautiful. Great inspiration Yvonne.

  21. Stunning table! I love your concrete table and leaving it uncovered is amazing. 🙂

  22. Wendy Howell says:

Gorgeous!! I have been anxiously waiting to see what theme you would come up with this year. Love everything about it 🙂

  23. cindy hattersley says:

I can so appreciate this gorgeous table because I do not know how to do glam. Your theme winter wonderland describes this tablescape perfectly. It is absolutely magical. I would love to be a guest at your table to take in the entire experience. I love the idea of using mismatched flatware, andtons of candles for ambiance. Any guest would be lucky to find themselves at one of your soirees!

  24. Cecilia from Georgia says:

I love the bling peeking out of the elegant decorations. I can’t wait to see what you have planned for us throughout the rest of your house in the Winter Wonderland!! I love your tiny white trees positioned so perfectly on the table.

  25. Wow! So pretty and I can’t believe you have all of this done already. I agree on lots of little lights and candles, they make a table so much more magical!

  26. Janie Landis says:

Hi there, is there some way to see your photos on your blog clearly? As I scroll over them or get to them in the feed, the pictures become muted, unclear and it is so frustrating. I love your tablescapes but have to guess at a lot of what you use and display because it just is not a clear photo. I would love to be able to look at one of your photographs, be able to see everything clearly. Is there a way to do this?

    1. Hi Janie, Look again. I used a lens that diffuses the background. There are lots of things in focus. Just the backgrounds are not.

  27. Julie Briones says:

Magnificent, Yvonne! Truly elegant and lovely! That beautiful tree is the perfect background, too! Thanks for the tips, too!

  28. Beth Pozzini Putz says:

It is nothing short of MAGICAL, Yvonne! I am so inspired and you have taken the grand prize! I love it all, and I cannot wait to clear all of my Thanksgiving place settings out for my Winter Wonderland!

    Blessings,
    ❤️Beth

    1. OH YEA! I love when my beautiful friends decorate right along with me! YOU GO GIRL!

  29. Yvonne, your table is just beautiful. I’m planning on using the same color combination for my annual Advent tea so it was especially fun to see your lovely table. It was my favorite from all the How to Rock Your Holiday Table contributors.

    1. Lauren, I am the new girl to this beautiful tour. And so so humbled and excited to be a part of PROJECT DESIGN!

  30. Oh my gracious! That is one gorgeous, magical table. My theme is white with gold & crystal/glass this year but will not look nearly as wonderful. But, I am excited to decorate along with you, Yvonne.
Can you give any hints for your mantel?

    1. I’ll be sharing my Christmas mantel the end of Nov or the first week in Dec. I’m still working out the details. Just a hint… I am bringing back the shutters, only in white! And I’m painting little white houses! And of course using lots of tiny lights!

  31. Everything is just gorgeous.
    Marilyn

  32. Elegant and lovely as usual.
    Joan

  33. What ] lovely theme. I like it.
    Marion

  34. Brr! You carried out the theme so well that I need to wrap up in one of your warm furry throws! The concrete table is so perfect for your Winter Wonderland theme. Wow, to think that this gorgeous fantasy tablescape was stashed away in plastic boxes! Love the glam! Thank you for sharing. Can’t wait to see the rest of your tour!
Question: I am curious as to how you and other bloggers decorate the dining room table when Thanksgiving Day actually arrives – winter, Christmas, transitional or back to fall?

    1. Great question! I use tablescapes pretty much like the ones you see just a bit pared down. I always do a buffet so I never worry about making room for dishes at the table. Sometimes my buffet is decorated more elaborately than my table!

  35. Your table is just amazing. A few years ago I did the theme for my tree Frozen when my granddaughter s were in love with the movie. They adored it and I realized how much I liked white and silver ornaments, tiny white lights and lots of glass icicles and birds. Have now added mercury glass ornaments and with the monetary investment I’ve made this will continue to be my decorations for my primary more formal tree in the living room. Still planning my family room but leaning toward lots of greens, candles, paperwhites and white amaryllis .Also have ordered some cute snowy owls to mix in or maybe use in a wreath over the mantle. Christmas is so much fun.

  36. annie.diamond@me.com says:

I adore your Winter Wonderland themed table! It’s magical complete with snow! I love all the little white trees and and candlelight setting the perfect winter scene. Your family and friends must be overjoyed every year!

  37. Beautiful doesn’t seem adequate. I had also decided my Christmas theme this year would be Winter Wonder. You always bring out the best in me. I will use some of your lovely ideas along with my own. I love your description of dancing guests along with dessert table. Enjoy your Winter Wonderland in all its glory❣️
    Patricia

    1. So nice, Patricia! Enjoy your Winter Wonderland too! Joyous Christmas!

  38. Karen VanLoo says:

Yvonne, that table is absolutely stunning! I love doing a theme, or changing my colors each year. Last year I did white & gold. This year I am doing a black and white theme, and using lots of black and white buffalo check, and want to get a few harlequin ornaments. I haven’t quite decided on my dining table theme yet, but I am definitely inspired by your table. One of my treasures I found is the big reindeer like yours that I have greenery in. He sometimes sits right in the middle of my table.

  39. I just want to ooh and aah!!! And entertain. I’ve lost the knack. This is so beautiful!! I love the bottle brush trees also. I got carried away when the green ones were in style but I do have assorted little and biggerjars as well. I’m still drawn to the freestanding ones. Any color. I went to a party and the hostess gave out personalized ornaments. I felt pampered!! I always gave out a little gift when I had Bunco. I’d add a verse to it. I’m inspired by your table to add a little gift at each place and also I liked the mercury glass bowl with the ornaments inside. Looks so pretty. The tree on the candlestick caught my eye too. Have a nice weekend!!

    1. Thank you beautiful Gwen! I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to see your comments. I feel like we are such good friends! Hugs!

  40. first allow me to say thank you for the fabulous tips and the gorgeous tablescape. I love both of them. before eating, I made cards, (put them in a bag) that requires each person that’s old enough to talk, have to do whatever the card say for them to do. example: say something positive to the person to the right of you… everyone in the same room during’s it. everyone love’s this game. it’s fun, and everyone feels very uplifted afterward.

Love your blog! Would love to some ideas for decorating after Christmas. What can i do to add sparkle to my home after putting christmas decorations away.

  42. Your table looks magical. Everything you do looks so professional but is so incredibly beautiful and homey.

  43. Karen Mechler says:

Yvonne, I absolutely love this winter wonderland table. It is so beautiful and calming. I also love your dining room chairs with the cross back. Would you mind telling me where they can be purchased? We are looking to find chairs like this to go with a lovely table for our sunroom. Thank you for sharing all your wonderful ideas and your lovely home. Merry Christmas!

    1. Hi Karen, they are called Juniper Dell Side Chairs and they are made by Stanley. I found them on Wayfair but don’t see them right now.

  44. Hi Vyonne! I love love your Winter Wonderland Tablescape. I would like to do this one for Christmas dinner! Would it work to mix some assorted sizes of dark frosted green trees with a set of my smaller size cream white bottle brush trees? I plan on using lots of fauux snow, three frosty white battery pillars, and two tall metallic holders. I also have a set of 3 green sparkly tree candles and metallic votives that I could incorporate in the tablescape as well. I would really appreciate your help Vyonne. Love your blog and have several tablescapes of yours set up on my kitchen table and houses and trees on our coffee table for Christmas!
