Here are 10 fall decorating ideas that you can start to do right NOW to be ready for fall! These will get you in the mood for the upcoming sweater weather!
ADD SUNFLOWERS TO YOUR HOME
Sunflowers are in-season flowers right now but they are such beautiful flowers to use all throughout the fall. I use fresh and faux sunflowers in our home.
Find the best quality faux sunflowers and they will last for years and years!
MAKE A FALL WREATH OR BASKET
One of the first things I do to decorate for fall is make a big wreath or brambly basket using elements of the season!
Welcome fall and everyone who comes to your front door with an autumnal welcome!
Make a wreath or basket now and it will be ready when you are ready to decorate!
You can see how to make this pretty FALL FRONT DOOR BASKET HERE.
It is really a very easy basket to make. Wouldn’t this look so pretty on your front door?
And here is a fall wreath anyone can make…
See the FALL LEAF WREATH here.
CUT HYDRANGEAS AND USE THEM IN TRANSITIONAL DECOR
I LOVE hydrangeas. I use them when they bloom in the summer and all through the fall. They are particularly beautiful when they take on some of those rich colors that tell you it’s fall.
In the vignette above start out with green apples and switch to white pumpkins later in the fall. I think creating Transitional decor is so smart! It can be enjoyed now and go all the way through Thanksgiving!
You can see this FALL post with PUMPKINS AND HYDRANGEAS HERE.
MAKE A PRETTY PUMPKIN
Start now to create pretty pumpkins for your fall home decor. These can be the stars of your fall decor! And NOW is the perfect time to start a pumpkin project.
I’m working on a really fun fall pumpkin right now! I can’t wait to share it with you soon!
My favorite pumpkin project are these beautiful CHINOISERIE PUMPINS above. These are so super easy to make and look so special. I used them with velvet pumpkins to make a pretty centerpiece! Velvet and chinoiserie are a fall match made in heaven!
One of my other favorite pumpkin diy is my GILDED PUMPKINS. Here are a trio of pumpkins gilded in gold, silver and copper leaf.
No matter what pumpkin project you want to do for fall, start now!
CREATE A TRANSITIONAL VIGNETTE

Now is the time to create a vignette that will transition from summer to fall. Choose things to go in your vignette that will work for both seasons.
Pears are a great natural element that works wonderfully this time of year!

GET OUR YOUR FALL DISHES AND ACCENTS

This year get out your beautiful dishes and other fall accents. Don’t let them sit in plastic bins or cupboards! Get them out now so you can use them all fall long.
Use them on the table and as part of your decor! Stack them, layer them and use them as a perch for great fall accents! This is the year to show them off!
WORK ON GETTING FALL TEXTILES READY!

Do you have fall pillows or throws? How about a cozy fall tartan or bedspread or duvet? I bet you have napkins that would look gorgeous for fall. How about a table runner or tablecloth?
Right now is the time to get them out and launder them. Make sure they are in tip-top shape for fall! Don’t forget to dry clean your pillows every now and then! They get soiled and dusty too!
It’s also time to PURGE outdated, tired, and worn textiles you won’t be using this fall. Don’t hold on to them, let them go! You will feel so so good!
And speaking of purging…
GO THROUGH YOUR FALL DECOR AND WEED IT OUT

Just like purging our old fall textiles that are no longer usable, we should go through all of our fall decorations and do the same. So when you are ready to use your fall decor you will know what you have, what you need and WHERE EVERYTHING IS!
This is such a good, no great idea!
Just think how much easier it will be to have all your fall decorations organized! Start now and purge and organize a little bit each week until fall. It will be here before you know it!
INVEST IN A BOWL

One of the best investments I have ever made was my dough bowl. It’s not old and it is probably not hand carved but it still looks great and is perfect for fall decorating! HERE is a really nice dough bowl on sale for a very reasonable price!
You can see how to style a fall dough bowl HERE and HERE.
There are so many ways to use a dough bowl. To hold a vignette, as fruit bowl, or planter, or magazine rack… just to name a couple!
Big or small dough bowls are a fabulous fall must-have!
Also think about other bowls for fall too. Invest in a few bowls that will look great with your fall decor. I just ordered a long white wooden bowl for my fall organics today. You can see it here.
MAKE A FALL TO-DO LIST

My fall to-do list looks something like this (in no particular order):
- find fall decor
- purge… be ruthless. NO CHACHKIES!
- make a list of what I need… yes, another list!
- put fall decor in plastic boxes on shelves in the garage for easy use
- order faux white pumpkin for pumpkin diy
- collect bittersweet
- make a bittersweet fall wreath
- style living room with transitional fall decor
- put away all summer decor and label
- style the mantel with transitional decor
- decorate front porch for fall
- and back porch
- plant planters with mums and fall plants
- get pumpkins from the pumpkin wagon
- get out dough bowls and fill with fall fluff
- create fall vignettes
Guess what? I just made my early fall list!!!!
Speaking of fall decorating lists. Get my free printable FALL DECORATING CHECKLIST below!
There’s lots more, but I’ll add to the list as I think of things to do! It’s so important to have a list that is reasonable and doable and real! And it feels so good to be able to check off each fall task!
OKAY, NOT IT’S YOUR TURN!!!!
Please leave a comment with what you think you should do NOW for fall! I can’t wait to read them!!!!!

Yvonne, Good morning. Beautiful cool day here in N C. Makes it feel a bit fall like and just the day to preplan some Autumn decor. Purging is definitely needed. Seems I can’t resist fall foliage, acorns and pumpkins. I just last weekend made a pretty sunflower centerpiece for my kitchen table and am working on a vignette for the counter using faux grapes and some harvestfruit themed plates .Think I will add a,bunch of wheat to this in a small basket. Late summer can be a challenge so thanks for all your great ideas.
I’m so glad you are in the fall mood too!
We hardly get Fall here in central Texas, we are still in for mostly 100 degree days through September (it has been an unusually cooler and wetter summer this year though)! Last year I purged some of the brighter orange decor and have purchased more cream, light blue and light green and I have a love for the velvet pumpkins this year. I’m on the lookout for those right now.
Sounds beautiful!
Can you please tell me where you got your walk hook from?
Hi Marion, it came from the Pottery Barn a few years ago. I don’t see it on their site right now.
I’m definitely looking at what I’m going to add to my porch for the fall. My big white pumpkin is making the ‘cut’ for sure! Love your tips, my friend! I never realized your coat ‘rack’ was a hook until just now! Love that!
I’m looking forward to see what you are doing for fall!
Hi! I love these tips! I always incorporate Sunflowers I my late summer – early fall decor! Where can I find a wood vase like yours? I adore it!
It’s out of stock. Sorry!
Yvonne,
I loved your blog post today. I love, love Fall. The weather is so comfortable outside; summer takes a toll on my body and I just love the crisp air in fall. Thanks for sharing some really good ideas that I can use this fall. I need to go thru my decor and weed out as you say!!! We collect way tooo much. As always, I enjoy your blog and Sunday post as well. Thanks
jean
Hi Jean, I am a fall lover too! You are smart to go through your fall decor. We tend to collect a lot of fall decor and after years of use it can be a bit tired!
Yvonne, will you adopt me??!? Haha! Your home is so peaceful and full of soft beauty, it makes me want to snuggle into the porch swing with a cozy blanket and breathe. Such wonderful ideas! Thank you for doing what you do! Especially for your boldness in sharing your faith!
I’m looking forward to fall so much these are such great ideas to begin incorporating fall colors now!
Beautiful vignettes are perfect for your lovely home. I’m curious about the black and white painted / patterned pieces you used in the transitional vignette. Where did you find them? Are they wood or cork? very interesting way to add pattern and texture. Thanks so much!
Thanks, Yvonne, for another wonderful post packed full of great ideas for Fall decorating. I always look forward to your posts!
We have sold our home at the lake and have moved into a new condo so Fall decorating will take on a new challenge for me this year! I am really looking forward to decorating. I made some of your chinoiserie pumpkins last year and just love them. They are so pretty and everyone comments on how beautiful they are.
Have a wonderful weekend and thanks, again, for being so special! Bless you!
How do I source the items you use……..such as the mango vase and burlap pillows etc?
I try to find the things I buy and link to them. If I cannot find a source, like when I find something locally, I try to find a similar item. Or if I am creating a list of pretty things to consider, like the best fall decor, I scour the web especially favorite and consistently great sites for the best products. It is VERY time-consuming but I love to get the best to my readers.
Thank you Yvonne for the fall list.It was very helpful.I’ve allready started taking early morning walks collecting pinecones and acorns so that I can clean them and use them in my fall decor. Also made some velvet pumpkins this year.[the easiest DIY fall craft ever] Now all I need to do is get some sunflowers and get started. Happy Fall.Have a great day and God bless.
Sounds like you are on your way to beautiful fall decor!
