6 BEAUTIFUL WAYS TO UPDATE YOUR FRONT DOOR

Our front doors are the first big welcome friends and family receive when they visit our home!  We all want to make that good first impression! Here are 6 beautiful ways to update our front doors and make them company worthy!

Spring is the perfect time to pretty us our doors! Let’s get busy!

TRY A NEW PAINT COLOR

A front door should have personality! Don’t be afraid to paint it a color you love. You don’t have to go along with the crowd. If you love pink… go for it! If you have always dreamed of a yellow door, then go bold! If your door is stained make sure the stain make your heart sing! The number one best thing you can do is to paint your door a fun color!

We had a red door for years. It was in style then and honestly a little boring. So when I got the nerve to paint it this awesome blue it was like my whole house profile perked up! I really wanted to paint the door a slate gray but there was a mistake when the color was mixed at the paint store. What a happy mistake! We love love love this striking blue!

It’s amazing how much it changes color in different light!

I’m not quite sure what we will do when we get tired of this color or the front door needs paint. Maybe a burnt orange!

Painting your front door is like losing 30 pounds or getting a perfect outfit or a great pair of shoes. It gives you such a lift!

Touch up your door and keep it looking fresh!

KEEP WINDOWS SPARKLING

If you are like me, you tend to forget to wash those windows on or near your front door. I’ve been appalled at how bad my windows look if I don’t make caring for them a priority! Sparkling windows will make your whole area shine!

ADD A WREATH

Okay, you can call me “the embellishment queen”. I love to make things pretty.  So adding a wreath to the front door is one of my favorite things to do!!! And if you are a StoneGable reader you know I love love love to make wreaths too.

A wreath pretties up the entire door! Make a gorgeous, bright wreath that can be seen from the sidewalk or road outside your home a priority!

And don’t forget to change out your wreaths with the seasons and holidays!

UPDATE HARDWARD

Go out and look at your door’s hardware. Go ahead… I’ll wait! Most of us don’t update our door’s hardware! When I finally updated mine a couple years ago, the old hardware was pretty unsightly! Tarnished beyond metal recognition… and pitted from the elements. Updating our door’s hardware is not a very big investment and what a difference it will make!

I found the welcome pineapple years ago on a trip to Charleston, SC. As it weathers it will become even more beautiful developing a one-of-a-kind patina! Think about getting a “signature” embellishment for your door!

This is why the next tip is…

ADD SOMETHING PERSONAL

Here are some pretty signature things for your front door

  • personalized nameplate
  • stunning door knocker
  • kick plate
  • monogram decal
  • unique house numbers
  • polished letter slot
  • turn doorbell

WEEKLY CLEAN UP

This tip is a reminder to myself! In my busy life wiping down the front door is not at the top of my list. But it should be! Doors get very very dirty from all the elements that they face daily. It only takes a minute or two to wipe down our front door… so just do it!

Also, once in a while polish your metal door threshold with car wax and it will sparkle and repel dirt. Amazing, really!

Now you know 6 ways to update your front door! I challenge you to choose one or two or even all six and make your door the pride of your neighborhood!

  1. Excellent ideas, Yvonne! I love each one of them, but adding a wreath is perhaps, the easiest that we can do at any given time!

  2. Lovely wreath, lovely door!! I am actually replacing my front door very soon, the new one will not have a knocker. Do you have any suggestions for hanging a wreath without damaging the new door?

    1. Hi Laura, you can hang the wreath on a pretty and sturdy ribbon over the entire door and fasten it to a suction cup hook on the inside. Hope this helps.

  3. I do love a beautiful wreath for the front door,it’s like jewelry for your house.I am one of those people that doesn’t like a dirty front door or glass side lights, so I do clean them periodically.(ha,ha)

    1. I have real lanterns on either side of my front door. Boy, do they get filthy!

I’m with you on painting the front door a fun color! Mine is currently that beachy, watery blue color….makes me happy every time I see it

  5. I’m not sure how a Red Door could ever be considered boring. Red is spicy & hot, or dark & moody, or brights & sassy. Red is welcoming. I’ve had blue, yellow even turquoise, but red is my favourite by far. It stands out! It welcomes all to my home. I take offence at “boring”.

  6. Yvonne, you are a woman after my own heart. Keeping our front porch area including the front door and windows fresh, neat and pretty is as essential as keeping the interior of our home in the same fashion. Your tips are excellent and serve as a handy reminder that our front door is the first impression we give to others about ourselves and our home. Our well kept front entrance is an expression of welcome to those who knock or ring the doorbell. Thank you for the fabulous tutorial for the lovely Spring wreath! I made a new Spring wreath last year, but have since painted our front door a different color and knew last year’s wreath would not be friends with the new color. This delightful wreath will go with any color, I cannot wait to make it and hang it on our door to welcome the coming season.

  7. Yvonne, am I missing something or do you not date your posts? Sometimes I like to know when a post was written. Those times are usually when I’ve read someone’s comment and they have said something that I’d like to look up online. It’s handy to know if it’s old news or still current. Thanks.

    1. No dates, no need to! My posts are mostly evergreen and current no matter what date I post them

Hi Yvonne! I am wondering exactly what color your paint is on your door?

    1. The door paint was a happy accident. We thought we were getting a custom gray but when we started painting the door it was blue and we loved it! Sorry, I don’t know what it is… maybe I’ll call it StoneGable blue!

  9. Yvonne, I love your Spring wreath, it’s beautiful. Thanks for all the helpful hints. Our front door is sheltered from the elements, so I don’t do much to it aside from changing the wreath and keep a monogrammed front mat. But, I will try the car wax on the hardware. Thanks again and Happy (almost) Spring!

    1. Susan, I’m not sure if you should use it on your hardware but the door plate that is under the door when it is shut looks amazing when you polish it!

  10. Great post. I dust my front door weekly as I’ve lived with new construction for 13 years in our neighborhood and they’re still building new homes and doing road work close to our home. I have a black leaded glass door with sidelights so you can imagine how dirty that black door gets. Using a dry miracle cloth makes it so easy to do. A wet cloth just streaks the door so found that a dry cloth works better. Think I’m the only one on my street that dusts my door so that tells me people just forget what’s outside or what they normally don’t see because so many of us use or garage entrances.

I’m so ready to update my front door and porch for Spring! Love your blue door! Could you please share the name of the color? I’ve had a red door for years and am ready for a change. I appreciate the reminder to wipe down the door; that’s something I often forget to do. We are getting ready to add some shutters to our windows; so excited to add some charm to our house!

  12. Yvonne, we have a full glass storm door. What would be your suggestion for a type of wreath to use? The ones I’ve tried just look smooshed. 😉 Thank you so much!

  13. Yvonne,
Thank you so very much for your quick response as to where the sheep can be purchased. If I order now surely I’ll get them before Easter.
