WHAT DO YOU THINK?

WHITE GREAT ROOM WITH LINEN CURTAINS ON THE WINDOWS.

As we keep making the Tanglewood house feel like our home it seems we are in a constant state of flux. Lots of changes! Big changes like the kitchen renovation going on now and little changes like adding curtains to the great room. I would love your opinion on this…

I usually have a good idea about what I like and/or love and what will and will not work in our home.

Here is our great room this summer…

WHITE GREAT ROOM WITH A BIG WOODEN VASE OF SUNFLOWERS OM A WHITE BUFFET

For months, I’ve been wrestling with how bare the windows look and what to do about them.

There is just not enough wall on either side of the window to hang curtains on both sides. And actually, there is just barely enough room to hang curtains on the far sides of the windows!

There are beautiful large slat blinds on every window in our home so they must stay. I can use the decorating $$$ elsewhere. I don’t need to keep the blinds down in this room because the room sits up high and overlooks a golf course and rolling farmland.

SO… after months and months of living with no curtains, I decided to hang curtains on the window.

What do you think?

WHITE GREAT ROOM WITH POPS OF COLOR FROM A BIG CONTAINER OF SUNFLOWERS IN A WOODEN BOWL

This is the third pair of curtains I’ve hung up in the great room.

white linen curtains in a white painted great room. A pretty chest with a mirror above it is next to it.

The first set of curtains was burlap curtains with a smocked top. Do you remember them from the Gable guest room? So pretty but so wrong!

burlap smocked-top curtains

The burlap was way too dark.

The only thing in the great room that stuck out were the curtains.

Then I got a light colored tone-on-tone curtain but again it was like they were saying, “look at me, here I am”!

I want the fireplace to be the focal point of this room and the furnishing to command attention.

I also want this area to remain soft and light because it is open to the so much of the house.

Finally, I pulled the white linen curtains down in one of the upstairs guest rooms and hung them up in the great room.

I made these curtains several years ago with linen fabric and iron on tape! Soooo easy!

You can see how I made them HERE.

Just between you and me, I kept the gold rings on the curtains until I’m convinced they are going to stay! And I do have to iron the curtains. They are pretty wrinkled!

But I want to hear what you think first…

Do they add enough softness to the room? Should they stay? What do you think?

Oh, I almost forgot… shall I bring the zebra rug back?

I can’t wait to hear what you think!

UPDATE

Goodness, I never dreamed so many of you would give me your opinions! Wow, thank you so much!!! It’s just after noon and there are 245 comments on the WHAT DO YOU THINK post!

The curtain/no curtain issue is about 50/50. But many of you would like to see a curtain rod go across the windows. Hmmm!

I thought of that but I was thinking that the curtain rod might get in the way of the fireplace.

So I got on PicMonkey and made a digital mock-up. The mockup is not perfect but it does show us how a curtain rod going across the windows would look.

I like that suggestion! How about you?

Keep your helpful suggestions coming!

  1. I definitely prefer the light soft color of the linen draperies. Several years ago I put a lightly lined more sheer fabric in an ivory color throughout the entire house. I like the uniformity of having all the draperies the same, and I added white comb blinds to the bedrooms and our family room windows for privacy. Not a real big fan of layering rugs, just a personal preference. Also, we keep hearing about tripping hazards on rugs as get older.

  2. Hi Yvonne,

I love the drapes but I don’t like the short rods. To me, the rods should go across the whole window even if you don’t ever plan to pull the drapes all the way across.

You new home is lovely! Enjoy!

  3. I love the curtains and hope you keep them! I can just imagine the burlap curtains and agree that they were too much. I think adding the zebra rug would be wonderful! Love your blog.

  4. Susan Martin says:

The drapes are lovely. They help soften the angels of the room, without drawing attention to them being there.
So my vote is great choice and keep them!!

  5. Sue B.Terry says:

I think the room looks better with no curtains. Some type of shade with a subtle trim might be nice. Good luck finding what you love!

  6. Dear Yvonne,
Congrats on your new home. I am totally overjoyed with 90% of your decorating. However, I’d lose the side curtains and put some 2/12” plantation shutters up. Either just bottom half of window with a possible swag valance for softness . Some textured material in a shade of white. Or if privacy is needed, full window of plantation shutters. God Bless. Kathryn

  7. Marialyce Keane says:

    Hi Yvonne,
Long time follower of yours. A neighbor in Bucks County, PA. Thank you for your generosity of spirit.

I vote no curtains. I’d consider plantation shutters in white. Clean, crisp and will provide privacy , light and texture. Also I vote no zebra rug.
Best of luck , love and happiness in your Tanglewiood home. We too considered downsizing but because my Dad lived with us we have an office turned bedroom and a shower on the first floor when we decide we no longer want to sleep upstairs. Grateful for Dad. He always had my best interests at heart.

    Best to you always.
    Marialyce

    1. Blessing to you as you take care of your Dad! My Daddy has been gone a long time and I miss him every day!

  8. Love the look. They should stay. Thumbs up!

  9. I love the softness of the light curtains. They look great. The great room appears to be smaller than your former great room.I’m not loving the big wicker chest in the corner. Less clutter would open up the room and make it more calming. I would like to see the zebra rug, but maybe in the fall/ winter.

    1. Anne Marie says:

Hi. I love the curtains. Brings a beautiful softness to the room. Something though about the wicker chest in the corner bothers me.

  10. I really do like the curtains it seems finished and your floors are so beautiful I think it also males your floor shine too notice it more it looks better!

  11. Ruth Newton says:

Yes! I love the softness the curtains bring to the space! Great addition! And yes, bring the zebra rug back! It is classic Stonegable!

  12. Hi Yvonne. I love the curtains they most definitely soften the room. I adore your ze bra rug. Yes bring it back

  13. I’m on the fence about the curtains; I wonder if plantation shutters would be a nice option?
Definitely yes to bringing back the zebra rug! There are already a lot of natural textures and neutrals, the zebra rug would be a great pop of color.

  14. The white linen curtains definitely soften and warm up the room. You could go either way, it’s a great light filled room – but I would keep them. I’ve always been a fan of your zebra rug, but maybe in another room (office, guest BR)? The fireplace is a focal point – love the “gather” sign, tobacco basket and moss ball/branch arrangement. Personally, I like less “stuff” but it’s all pulled together beautifully. BTW, the large vase of sunflowers is eyecatching!

  15. Love the curtains and short poles. A definite yes.

  16. Laura Smith says:

Love the curtains! NO to the zebra rug!

  17. I love the space but the curtain panels don’t add anything to the room. I would go with an interesting boxed valance with some color. I would not use the zebra rug

  18. Dear Yvonne,

I would do Roman blinds on the windows. You could have a subtle print on the fabric that would add some interest without overpower.

    Yours,
    Linda

  19. I think you should bring back the cream and black prints. It made your fireplace pop, think it gets washed out now. Looking good!

  20. Sarah Mckisson says:

No to the curtains! My eye keeps saying how do those close and I can’t look at anything else. Also, no to the zebra rug! It too is distracting from the calm and cool of the room!

    1. Hi Sarah, the curtains in the StoneGable living and dining room and here in our sunroom don’t close. Curtains are often hung that way. Thanks so much for the input!

  21. 2 thumbs up!! I love! Gives the room a soft elegant feel.Im gonna try this…I’ve had no curtains in mine for 13 yrs…I Love natural light and didnt want to loose a drop of it.I want to to hang half rid up high however how do you secure it if you cant/ dont catch a stud.( I’m knew at the hangin curtain thing.

PS I like no zebra rug for now!

    1. My Bobby is the hardware hanger. I think he used a screw-in plug to hold the curtain rod in place.

  22. Marilyn S. says:

No to the curtains – Yes to the zebra rug. There is just not enough room for the curtains, the rod appears to be coming out of the side walls (akward) the Windows without curtains looked fine and allowed the room to breath while letting the fireplace shine .

  23. Carol Frey says:

I like the addition of the curtains and can see you have some type of blinds that are on those windows. Have you considered bamboo Roman shades in place of the current blinds? They would pick up on the soft beigey tones of the chest and other natural wood pieces in the room. And I vote a big “YES” on bringing back the zebra rug for a punch of contrast on the floor.

  24. I think it looks fabulous! What about adding your bamboo shades as well or maybe even by themselves.

    1. I would love to add bamboo shades but we have really nice slatted blinds all over our home. I think the bamboo would look so pretty but I’m not changing the blinds.

  25. I’m with you! There’s something wrong about the single sided curtains. I recommend custom linen balloon shades. They wouldn’t even have to be workable since you already have the blinds but they would provide the softness you are looking for and polish off the look. As to the zebra rug – possibly in the Fall.

  26. SUSAN B LUKAS says:

I like the curtains, but I do not like the rod/rings. It looks like a shower curtain rod. My eye goes to it and distracts me from the pretty soft room. Or no curtains and put up bamboo/natural fiber roman shades the color of the candlestick holders?

  27. Your room is lovely, it’s calm and soothing. My preference would be for 3 inch plantation shutters. They would give a clean look and let the fireplace become the focal point. There is a lot going on in the room and the curtains and blinds pulled up are a big distraction from the other beautiful elements in the room.
I love your blog. What a good idea to ask for readers input.

  28. MICHELINE kane says:

Hi Yvonne!! Loving Tanglewood ! But honestly, the curtains , not loving them. I think you’re wanting them to work but somehow you don’t think they do. Loved your shades in your family room at StoneGable. Perhaps something like those , only a little more formal. My motto , when in doubt walk away. And I have a feeling your instincts are correct.

  29. Hi Yvonne,

the room looks beautiful! Keep the curtains, they match with the sofa and the tablelights! Realy nice!
Please noch zebra rug, here in Germany everything has to be animal free…

    LOL Doris

  30. Mary M Patterson says:

Personally, I think you need a little color on the windows. The burlap may be a little too dark but I do like the color of the sisal rug and oval basket. Maybe even a little color with the blind if you can source a little color for the drapery panel.

  31. Morning, The room is looking good. I really like the suggestion of plantation shutters. Adding curtains with some texture or monochrome design would be a plus. The ones you have seem lost. I’m not a fan of short rods. It looks incomplete to me. Whatever you decide, it will look great!

  32. Melanie Winter says:

I think the curtains add the right amount of softness. I have the same layout in my living room and have hung white linen curtains just as you did and it really makes the room look larger and complete. My personal preference is a full curtain rod, not half rods. I like the structure above the window.
I also think you should definitely try out the zebra rug. It’s a great neutral and might add a little pizazz!
Looks great. I can’t wait to see your kitchen when it is done. I am itching to renovate ours!

  33. No to the curtains, yes to the zebra rug. Also, I’m not a fan of the wicker chest…maybe a large plant/tree in that corner instead?

  34. linda of no.cal. says:

The room is BEAUTIFUL !! I don’t think you need that curtain layer. I luv the zebra rug,
    ?linda of no.cal.

  35. Good morning and happy Friday, dear Yvonne. I identify with your curtain dilemma. We are building a new house, and I am going to have the same issue.

I tend to be a zero window treatment girl. I can imagine the color from the burlap panels was overwhelming. I agree that the addition of the panels adds a needed softness, but I don’t think the color of these is adding anything to the room. Maybe a bit of bump up of the white tone. Somewhere between the white and khaki, but closer to white. Sand keeps popping in my head. I agree with someone else about the basket. I think it looks too dark and heavy. Maybe a nice green plant.

I am loving your progress. Everything you do is always stunning. We are looking forward to our big change, too.

  36. I love the curtains. They look perfect. I think the zebra rug would also look good. Can’t wait to see a picture of the room with the zebra rug.
With each picture my eye does go to the dark chest in the corner. I’m not a designer but not sure if that’s what others see also.

  37. 1 more step, possibly 2
    1) find a beautiful shade you like – bamboo, grass, twigs, whatever and hang those- then
    2) you may find that you want a full length curtain rod

Love your blog, love your style, love your Sunday devotionals

Get that neutral texture up on those windows!

  38. Hi Yvonne,

I think the fabric of the curtains is soft and pretty, however, I think a black, full width rod across the window header would look better. It would give the illusion that your drapes are operable and pick up the black in your zebra rug. After all, every great room needs a little black to ground it. I defined think you need the color in the zebra rug to enhance the room. Happy Decorating!

    1. I agree. The balance is off. If you don’t like the rod across, I would suggest using a light fabric cornice across the top too and definitely the zebra rug in front of fireplace. Our house is gorgeous!

  39. I like the curtains, but maybe some with a little texture? I have my bedroom curtains hung the same way. I would say no to the zebra rug, it seems too heavy with the rest of the room. But I’m sure whatever you choose will be perfect. I love your home, both this one and your old house.

  40. Christine Lippe says:

Beautiful room but I think the Zebra rug will make the curtains look better. The curtains make the whole wall too white and your fireplace does not stand out like you want.
    Lovely home.

  41. Betty in Arlington says:

Yvonne, The room is beautiful and inviting (I styled my front livingroom after yours). I would add the plantation shudders to keep the sun away and keep the partial or full curtains. I love the sisal rug so suggest it stay. Could the basket trunk be placed somewhere else? It seems to be weighing down the look of the room. Your mantle is so styled – love it!

  42. Fran Johnson says:

How about adding a stenciled motif with just a speck of color or tonal difference to the white linen curtains to lift the eye toward the windows.

  43. Your great room is so soothing and inviting! I love the addition of the curtains as they soften the space and add a finished look. However I would loose the rings and shirr the curtains on the rods. The rings are distracting from the softness of the curtains. Also since you say you don’t need the blinds, why not remove them? To my they clutter up the look. For summer, nix the idea of the zebra rug. I think it would weigh down the room and distract from the light and airy feel. Just my two cents. Know you’ll decide what’s best for you!

  44. I LOVE IT!!! it keeps the softness you want, adds just a bit of “finished” look at the windows; no, I wouldnt bring back the zebra rug for now….the one thats down looks light and airy, making the room feel cool and relaxed. love your new house, but also your old one! I would take either if you were my decorator!!!!!

love your posts, keep them coming, just wish I could get my house to even resemble your open, relaxed, airy feeling even a little! stay well and safe and enjoy your new home!

  45. They look good if you just need something in there. I just like bare windows. It looks like a curtain without a purpose ☺️ I would say no to the rug.

  46. I like the curtains. They do add some necessary softness. Happy you do have that litle bit of space. It’s more room than I have. I say no to the rug though!

  47. Sharrie Mezzanotte says:

Your beautiful room is lovely w/o the curtains. It actually feels like it is crowding the corners.
Perhaps save the zebra rug for winter when you add in darker accents? Again, all is just gorgeous!
    Sharrie

  48. I think the curtains are perfect! Your home is beautiful and I can’t wait to see the kitchen.

  49. Bernadette says:

Your room is lovely. My honest opinion is the curtains look unfinished . Maybe if your window had some wood framing would help. Plantation shutters with 3” or larger slats would look beautiful with outside frame or woven shade. Zebra rug would be too busy.
Also, I know you didn’t ask for any opinions on your master bedroom, but I loved when you had the sconce type lamps next to your bed, with no framed art.

  50. Ann Blair says:

What about just a valance and maybe swags of some sort. I like them with no curtains. No on the zebra rug.

  51. I think the rods are wrong color – they are now the first thing my eye travels to. Consider a whitewash rod. I would prefer a small gingham or print with the color that is in the pillows – something to anchor the wall and make the wicker pop. No zebra rug.

  52. Hi Yvonne,
I love how your house is evolving and becoming your home. Beautiful!

When I look at the pictures I automatically think the curtains are too heavy and stuck in the corners.
I would be walking away from this project and come back to it later but at the same time wanting to finish it.

Is there an online site where you can try out different window coverings like you can with paint colors in rooms?

Thanks for sharing and good luck!

  53. June Gerstner says:

I love the soft, fresh room without the curtains. There is lots to look at, the fireplace is definitely the main focus, and the curtains are a distraction. Also, since your style has become much more clean and fresh, I would also leave out the zebra rug, certainly until the late fall when you’ll want to add some warmth. Who knows, maybe by then you’ll find something else that catches your eye to do just that!

  54. Good morning Yvonne
I’m like you, not really sure about the curtains. Maybe it’s the rod. They seem bulky. I know you said the gold ring would be changed, but my eye seems to be fixed on the rods. When I’m in doubt I know something is not quite right and you are doubting your normally confident self.
I say bring in the zebra rug it would bring in some contrast to the neutral space.
Good luck on your choice. I know you’ll get it right.

  55. I love the white curtains in the room but I do not love the hardware. Perhaps black or better mounted so no hardware shows would be my suggestion. I like the idea of the black and white rug but the natural fiber rug gives the room an ethereal, breath-of-fresh-air look that I am loving.

  56. You asked for it! I like the curtains you have up now but that curtain rod looks like a shower pole cut in half – too much metal. Perhaps if you had a sleeve on the curtain to cover it up. I also think the placement is wrong. I think it would look better right at the window height. My eye goes straight to that pole and it seems out of place to me. No to the zebra rug! Hope that helps!

  57. Tisha Good morning says:

Good morning from TN! I always enjoy your posts:)
Here’s a thought, keep the window treatments!!! They look great, in my opinion. Here’s a suggestion… Change the rod. Get a full rod with whatever finial your heart desires in whatever finish you love. To me, that would make the panels look intentional. They would just look like functional window treatments that have been drawn open. It looks like there is room for a full rod above each window. The eye could almost believe that the two rods were one, making the two panels, and that whole wall, look like one window.

  58. I love the white curtains! Adds just the right amount of softness to the windows. I wasn’t to do something like that with our windows too…. The room looks beautiful!

  59. Marianne Miller says:

Why not put a rod all the way across the window and use sheers and tie them toward the corner?

    1. Jina Sheppard says:

I echo this thought! Perhaps a softer looking curtain rod like a washed wood.

  60. Ok, you asked (?) personally, I think the problem is where the rod is. It is not ceiling height and not just above the window frame, just floating midway. . Since you want the fireplace to be the focal point and these curtains now looked “forced“ where they are, how about moving that rod closer to the window frame and turning those curtains into valances across each window. It would add texture and dimension without distraction. Just a thought.
I am enjoying watching your progress and as always gathering ideas from your beautiful home. Thank you for sharing.

  61. I like the room and they way the rug and basket trunk add texture. I don’t think you need the curtains on half rod. They look out of place some how crowded in the corner. I’m all for the zebra rug and was wondering where it landed! Your home is lovely. Looking forward to kitchen redo!

  62. Jan W Dillon says:

The room is lovely and you extra touch here and there makes it so. I love the linen curtains, especially in these hot, hot July-August days. The one thing that caught my eye is the curtain rod. It, quite frankly, is just a rod. Are there othere options? It reminds me of those spring loaded bathroom shower curtain rods. Possible solution is to make them white or soft gray???

  63. Good morning!
I love your idea of the curtain on the side.
You are looking for softness…the long curtain and hardware do not look soft.
How about a beautiful sheer curtain…pulled to the side…very full but sheer…option of letting hang down.
The blinds pulled up need covered. The blinds and drape hardware do not say
“soft”. The sheer curtain needs to be full enough to cover the entire hardware…curtain rod and Venetian blind.
    This would say “Softness”…
    Love you and your website.?
    Diana Holzer

    Or…w

  64. Nancy Goetz says:

Maybe add a black rod with a cut glass knob at end. I would try a curtain with some depth to the color, perhaps a lighter shade but same tone as the carpet. I would remove the basket in the corner. It seems out of place. Add the zebra rug in winter.

  65. Grainne Mcdonald says:

The curtains are lovely but they cause a subconscious Feeling of disorder. Perhaps plantation shutters would give a sense of order better. Also they would be more suitable to the view.

  66. I like the curtains. You need standard length rods, even if you don’t close the curtains.Form follows function!

  67. Hey Yvonne it’s me again.
I went back and looked at the pictures and maybe it’s the rod and the top of the blinds competing against each other. Especially because they are at different heights. Does it look differently with the blinds lowered. I have the same type of blinds and leave them down (but opened). I still get plenty of light.
Maybe the two lines are the problem. Look a little closer at that.

  68. They do add softness. I am not sure I like the white on white. The rods are bothering me. I have the same situation in my living room. I prefer for the rods to go all the way across the window. Maybe a tone on tone pattern?

  69. Barbara Moore says:

I think a pair of white linen roman shades would look better and a little less crowded. I’d hang them high to bring the eye up which would frame the fireplace. Save the zebra rug for fall.

  70. Big fan of the white linen! May I suggest a wooden valence painted white, hung high with a nice shape to hide your curtain rod and give
the illusion of a larger windows. Leave this rug. I am a big fan of you style and you inspire me daily. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with all
of us. Stay safe and healthy.

  71. Beverly Murphy says:

I’m sorry, I just don’t like the curtains there at all. To my eye…..just looks out of balance and the really short rod is all wrong. I agree there needs to be something on the windows. Maybe a a single swag on each window or just shutters half way up. My reasoning is if you question it…then you know it’s wrong. But hey, you are the expert.??

  72. Christine J says:

The room is beautiful….however I vote no on the curtains. I’m a no window treatment believer if you don’t need privacy
You have nice shades if needed for sun or privacy .
    Love your new ‘digs’ 🙂

  73. Great Rooms always have at least one problem…especially with windows!! I would definitely skip the curtains on a short rod…they definitely look like they were put there for no reason except to fill a bare wall space. Perhaps a long rod over the window would help, but I really think skipping the long drape would look better and the “cluttered corner” look would be gone. The drapes have no purpose. A sheer drape on a long rod might work and look ok gathered to one side. Perhaps, if you really need something to cover the window and add to the room’s ambience, something sheer….a balloon shade, a tie up shade, etc. but I think the room is lovely as is. The zebra rug perhaps this fall when darker accents are added. The room is gorgeous..stay well.

    Diane

  74. Yes keep linen curtains and bring zebra rug back. I think you’re just not use to the curtains yet. The fireplace will be focal point and the zebra rug will help ground the space and direct attention to fireplace again.

  75. I like the curtains and they do add a softness to the room. I think the rod and the curtain rings are what draws your eye from the fireplace. Maybe if you extended the rod the full width of the window might help (or maybe use a different finish.) This room is beautiful! I would not use the zebra rug.

  76. Like the curtains but would use a thinner rod in a different color. I’d say no the the zebra rug and would also remove the larger basket in the corner.

  77. I like the room without the curtains. They look like they are squeezed in to me. But the room is absolutely beautiful. I’m not sure about the rug. I can’t say without seeing it.

  78. Julia King says:

A rod all the way across and just push curtains ALL to one side when open. I’ve had to do this, with the help of Bypass Curtain Rings (I needed the bypass rings because my windows were very wide and my rod needed a support in the middle). Then you can pull your curtains shut if need be.

  79. Personally id do a valance with texture above the windows…keep it neutral but it frames the windows and finishes the room.

  80. Hi Yvonne
I love most of your decorating tips/ideas. But I have to agree that the curtain rod/rings look too much like a shower curtain rod. Also, I think the location of the rod on the wall looks out of place. I agree that a linen balloon shade would be a better option. I also agree that the large wicker basket would work better somewhere else in the house!

  81. Yvonne, I have confidence in you! For me, it depends how you feel when you are sitting in that room. For me, I probably could live without the curtains. I think they attract my eye for the wrong reason. The half a curtain look is not that appealing even though it’s repeated on the other side of that wall. And aren’t the Windows revealing a beautiful picture. I think I would love the kick that the zebra rug would bring to the mix. There’s the daring side to your personality again. It’s a lovely room.

  82. Your Tanglewood home is beautiful just like Stonegable was. I think the curtains look crowded. I love the look in there of no curtains. Let your fireplace shine. No to the zebra rug for summer, but love it for fall/winter.
Do you still do consulting? I have a fireplace dilemma …

  83. The room is lovely but I would not bother with the need for curtains as pretty as they are. IF you decide to keep them I would definitely remove the basket as it obscures the sight line and makes it look cluttered.

  84. I am not in love with the curtains and I think you are not in love either or you wouldn’t ask us for our opinions.Lol! I am pretty sure somewhere along the way you have taught us to love everything we decorate with. They look awkward going across only part of the window. If you want to give the windows more life without taking away from the fireplace I would use stacked white moldings on the top (almost like a miniature version of your mantel) and a small frame mounding around the rest of the windows. For the zebra rug I would wait until fall.

    1. Oops! Autocorrect changed how I spelled mouldings both times!

  85. I do like the white curtains. It does soften the windows by adding another layer of texture. Using the one panel is genius! That’s all it needs. For Fall/Winter though maybe bring back the zebra rug to ground and warm the room up a bit. Then put it away in the Spring/Summer to give that airy and cooler feeling. Thank you for sharing your blog with us. You’ve given a lot of help to all of us.

  86. Yvonne – your home is beautiful and I love seeing all the changes you are making to make it even more “yours”! I had windows like this in our last home and the rods were placed across the entire window and then the drapes were tied back. But you don’t need drapes in that beautiful room…maybe sheers. Or, if you want to replace just those blinds, how about shades with a valance that is the same fabric and covers the mechanism ? We did those all over our new apartment and sprung for the ones that operate with a remote and love them. Good luck…and this is why I like to follow you…your attention to detail. Laughing a little because I come from a long line of women my mom referred to as “curtain crazy”. She and her sister were always changing their curtains, fussing with the way they hung, looking for new ideas….We are always trying to make our homes the best they can be for the ones we love !

I agree with all the comments about the curtain rods being too short, wrong color, etc. So I would change that but I do like the curtains. Have you considered adding some sort of texture to the curtains? I am thinking ball fringe, maybe even in another darker neutral. Just a thought, but I do love your decorating style and advice to us daily! Thanks so much!

  88. Your home is so inviting and interesting. I gravitate towards simplicity and clean lines…for me, the curtains add too much commotion. If you desire to keep the fireplace as the focal point, simplify the window treatments…perhaps decorative textured blinds. I prefer the current rug for summer and save the zebra rug for cooler months.

  89. A lovely room but needs more brown on the fireplace wall, possibly adding woven roll up shades on the windows underneath the curtains and a wood, chunkier curtain rod in the same warm brown tones of the chest and coffee table.
Enjoyed your blog for years, Yvonne!

  90. In my opinion, I like better without the curtains. I just had this conversation with my daughter who moved into her new house. She asked me if I liked her curtains she had just put up. I said yes, but I am just not a “curtain person”. I prefer rooms without and just shades to pull for privacy. I’d say no to the zebra rug. Your room looks perfect the way it is right now.

  91. I think the curtains are way too heavy for this situation. Looks a bit contrived to me. A simple white sheer on rings, with a bit of texture would stack with a lighter feel.

  92. Hi Yvonne, I loved your beautiful room without the curtains . When I looked , my eyes were drawn to the curtains and the rods and the room felt very closed in . I have white louvres on all of my main windows , so perhaps I am a little biased . I would love to see your beautiful , zebra rug back in a room . Looking forward to what you do .

  93. Beautiful room. I think using a small curtain rod and an unlined linen panel on each side would be nice. You have room on each side of the window to gather a lightweight panel. It would give a little texture and color. The zebra rug would be a nice addition especially if another black item or two is added. I enjoy your blog!

  94. Nancy Schipper says:

I think you could keep the panels but you need a full curtain rod – still keeping the panels on one side. I love that look.

You could definitely bring the zebra rug in or out changing it up depending on design mood.

    1. I love the look of the linen curtains, adds softness at the windows, but the rods look too heavy and I think a darker color for the rods would be better. I love how you usually have a little black touches around, so possibly black rods.

  95. Heddy N Frank says:

The curtains soften the look of the room, especially when you have that lovely pitched ceiling. However, have you considered installing a wider version of your rods and extending the look of the curtains by adding a matching balance tat covers the top mechanicals of the blinds. This would give the room a more French inspired look.
As for the zebra rug. As soon as the heat of midsummer passes, and you start thinking in terms of a cozy feel, changing accessories to reflect the Fall, then the zebra rug will bring the room together. For now, the room looks like a cool, refreshing refuge on a hot and steamy day!

  96. Dianne Stavropoulos says:

I absolutely adore your home. And I have an identical wall, center fireplace with a window on each side. For a couple of years I left them “uncurtained” but always felt like I had forgotten something. I bought some linen and made simple panels and hung them. And now they look complete to me. I used black rods because that’s the dominant color in the rug in that room. I love the look of your linen curtains!

And yes, bring back the zebra rug!

Thanks for all you do! Kip

  97. Nope! The curtains, in my opinion, detract from the beautiful flow and ambiance of the room. You don’t need them as the room is perfectly beautiful without them.
As for the zebra rug, I say put it in the room and, as I always say “see if it talks to you”! I do that all the time! Especially when I’m shopping. I’ll ride something around in my buggy for a while to see if it talks to me if I’m on the fence about buying it. That really works well for me. Honestly, the room is as close to perfection as can be!

  98. Definitely keep the curtains – not so sure about the hardware though.
And please, please, please bring back the zebra rug! SOME color/touch of black is needed !
Love Tanglewood, but I miss Stone Gable, too. I cannot wait to see the finished kitchen!

  99. Love the room but I don’t think the curtains (or the blinds) are doing anything helpful here. I don’t care for the heavy linear line that the curtain rods create. In a space where you want to use the whole room and allow you eyes to travel to the neat ceiling, there rods stop you. It feels a bit uncomfortable between the window and wall too.

  100. I would leave the windows bare and put a wood cornice up there, maybe with a curly design like your chest or a fabric one, maybe the burlap fabric could work there. Personally I don’t care for the zebra rug.

  101. Not a fan of that look. Outside mount of a Roman shade would be so pretty. Looks like your hiding something behind the curtain. My eye goes to the rod. My opinion .

  102. I just placed an order for Roman shades and sheers for my living room and just sheers for the bay in the dining room. Have a vaulted ceiling in the dining room and have never hung curtains high as the “rule” you often advise. Chickened out on doing that but the next morning I called and asked the guy to come and remeasure, I decided to go for it. All that being said…I’m following your advice. Also, I have never seen a ‘shower rod’ as nice as your two rods! I would keep the rods, hang them high, but then these particular curtains won’t be long enough. If you never plan to lower the blinds, remove them, solving the heavy look at the top. Keep that zebra rug for your seasonal change. (I’m currently in love with antelope for summer.) Yvonne, you could decide to not do another single thing and your home would be all you’re hoping. It exudes hospitality, truly. This was fun, thanks!!!

  103. Carmen Wiker says:

    Good morning Yvonne,
When I look at your room the first thing my eye goes to is the rods, don’t really notice the curtains.
I think something needs to go across the top of the window or not at all. It gives the room a very linear look if that makes sense. For the zebra rug I would bring it back k when you put your black pictures above the mantel you had before. There’s not enough black in the top half of your room to balance it right now. Thank you so much for asking our opinion. Your home is just beautiful and bright. God bless your day.

  104. I love the last pair. Adds softness, pulls the room together with a warm, comfy feel. I don’t think the zebra rug should be here. I like the one in the photos….again, soft inviting feel. Zebra would be too stark.

Good job! Love your new house!
    Gayle

  105. Hi Yvonne
I pretty much love everything you do! So I am sure you will make the right call. But since it is fun to “what if” on your design question here is my two cents. I am not a fan of only one curtain hanging down on the window as it looks unfinished and off balance. So with that said, the rest may not apply if you DO love it. 🙂
Have you considered shutters? Or maybe a Roman or a tie up valence with some pretty ties? Even if you want something plain a bit of texture might be nice? And I think maybe the zebra rug under the coffee table on top of the textured rug you have might be nice to just add some interest for the eyes. But I can’t wait to see what you do!

  106. I love it! I would add a tall green plant I dont think you need the zebra rug. Love the drapes!

  107. Jeanell Green says:

I prefer the room with the airy feel of no curtains. The small side curtains are obviously only decoration and don’t think it is needed

  108. The drapes looked beautiful! I wouldn’t put a zebra print rug in this room, the rug you have looks great all by itself.

  109. I would suggest woven wood shades with a fabric cornice. The fabric on the pillows would look good or something similar. The wall space is too small for curtains. Zebra needs to roam somewhere else.

  110. I love your blog! I’m thinking if you put a rod all the way across the window it gives the illusion the curtain goes all the way across. I like that it gives softness to the wall. Looking forward to seeing the new kitchen.

  111. Mary Clair says:

I am a proponent of less is more. The rod takes away from the beautiful window. If anything enlarge the molding around the window. Enjoy the beautiful view of the golf course.

  112. Timerey Bush says:

My Mom was an Interior designer.. I wish I had taken pictures of house she solved window problems. I’m an artist and taught for 30 years … I truly understand your problem… the room is lovely but I forget the room and look only at the windows… here is what I would tell my students painting … put your hand over the area and ask yourself.. better with or without. Would you consider shutters? There are so many beautiful blinds out there maybe something with texture.. your palette is neutral so maybe a different blind. Maybe you need some lovely tall sticks in the corner to fill in the area. Good luck and God bless you in your new house!

  113. Liz Gallagher says:

Hello Yvonne, In my humble opinion, you don’t need the rods or curtains. And I say YES to the Zebra rug for some contrast. What fun you are having!! And we are too right along with you 🙂

  114. Vicki Brady says:

I like the room much better with no curtains at all. The curtains seems to throw things out of balance. The zebra rug is great, but the room also looks light and bright without it. I would return the zebra rug when summer ends.

  115. Evelyn Getty says:

    Yvonne,

I too have the same problem in my great room/family room as well with little space to have drapes along side the window due to
    the fireplace.
I suggest roman shades in a burlap color to give the soft look you seek and it gives color from the floor directing your eye upwards.
Keep the rug you have shown in this picture . It contributes to the softness and natural color.

  116. Linda Gomez says:

I think the curtains detract from the room. The rod loods really heavy and takes my eyes straight there. Personally I prefer no drapes at all. I like the clean look of the blinds only and with so little room for curtains they make things look crowded. Looking forward to seeing your kitchen redo!!!

  117. I would not keep the curtains. And no zebra rug! The sisal looks great on its own.

  118. Pat McKinney says:

No on drapes. Maybe a light valance to hide the pulled up blinds and give a softer look. Yes bring back the Zebra rug. Your home is beautiful!

  119. Have you considered an ivory sheer , with a heavier weave, for some texture? That might be the soft touch you’re looking for. Maybe just gathered onto the bar.

  120. I love this room; however, I’m not a fan of the curtains at all. I believe a neutral covered cornice over the top of each window might look better or nothing at all.

I would interchange the zebra carpet in the spring but enjoy the room as is for now.

Your new home is beautiful, Yvonne.

  121. I think the rods stick out! If they were a lighter color or hung closer to the window frame my eye wouldn’t be drawn to them! I like the curtains and don’t think they’re too much! Love the room otherwise!

  122. Yvonne, I want to pay you a compliment that ALL women love to hear…Your new head shot is so pretty and you look so thin!!! Your WW’s plan is working, my friend. Now, on to the review…The room is coming together so nicely, just as I anticipated. Here is my humble opinion…I like the softness of the drapery panels, but think that a rod pocket or shirred panel might work better. Seeing the rings can be distracting. With the black around your fire box, I wonder if a black rod, with an interesting finial, might work. How do you like the blinds down but open, to allow the view to be seen and light to come in? I am yearning to see your painting of the French street scene. Have you tried it over the fireplace? The white tobacco basket seems to get lost on the white walls, and the “gather” print will go lots of other places. I always loved the layering of the zebra rug but would probably wait until winter to add it. I agree with several readers about the idea of a tall plant in the right corner, facing the fireplace. Whatever you decide will continue to be tasteful and lovely…Do it YOUR way! That is why we all read your blog!

  123. You house is so amazingly beautiful! I was thinking some beautiful Roman shades would look awesome. I know what ever you decide will look gorgeous.

  124. I do enjoy the curtains. I think they soften the windows and give a finished look to the room. The zebra rug would be a nice change for the fall/winter months.

  125. LYNN PAULLUS says:

Leave the curtains. No zebra until fall/winter.

  126. Elizabeth Creegan says:

Yvonne , this is such a beautiful room. I think the curtains are okay but unnecessary. I think the weight and placement of the rods are what is bothering you. They add heaviness and draw attention to the mechanics of the blinds. Perhaps raise a different rods right to the ceiling and maybe use a curtain with a tone on tone design for some texture. I love the zebra rug , but don’t think it’s needed for summer. Maybe use it as a seasonal addition in fall or winter. Beautiful room. Can’t wait to see what your final decision.

  127. I love the curtain I would put a big green faux plant behind the basket like a fig

  128. Carol Anderson says:

I like the curtains, BUT they feel kinda skinny n exaggerate the narrow wall space. What would happen if you changed the mantel out with a little stronger arrangement and went back to windows without curtains? Yer gut is telling you “somethun ain’t right”.
Thank you for your blog. I’m learning so much.

  129. Laraine Larkin says:

I like the curtains! They add a layer to the room without without jumping out at you. Such a beautiful room Yvonne.

  130. Patricia Durham says:

My two cents (and you know there is a shortage of coins right now) is that the white linen curtains look fabulous. They soften the room and add just the right softness without overpowering the furnishings. Your home is gorgeous and I’m sure whatever you decide will the perfect.

  131. Good morning Yvonne, I love the room! I do however think the curtains could be a shade darker. The curtain rod and hooks make them look like shower curtains. I love the curtain idea. Although I tend to lean towards a no curtain just beautiful blinds like you have. But with the height of your room and everything in your room so inviting and elegant I think you need something there as well. And on the idea of the zebra rug, I would bring it back in the fall/ winter months. That would be such a cozy feel. Thank you for all your ideas and posts I enjoy and look forward to what you have to share each morning. Good luck with your decision. I’m sure whatever you chose it will be perfect.

  132. Jeanne Bell says:

I love curtains but they are the first thing I notice when I look at the room. What about some kind of shutters?

  133. I love the curtains, but I think they stand our too much where they are now and seem somewhat out of place. If they were on a rod that stood out less (maybe even hidden)and at the top of the window level rather than above they would blend in more and not stand out so much and be the thing that catches your eye rather than the fireplace. I also love the zebra rug, but I think the room looks more serene without it, if that is the look you are going for. I’m not a professional decorator, so just my opinion.

  134. I like these curtains. Agree that the other two options don’t work. Your home is elegant and just lovely. It is always fun when moving into a new house reimagining your things and how they can be used in the new spaces. A table that might have been in a bedroom suddenly works in the den, etc. Moving things around until you have just the look you want is fun.

  135. Nancy Bailey says:

I personally do not care for fabric at windows. You state that the wide slat blinds must stay. IMO, what would fit in with your decor would be white wooden cornices that would tie in with the style of your fireplace front and mantel. The blinds would then stack up underneath and give you a beautiful, high-style uncluttered look. As far as the zebra rug – go for it. Easy to remove if you don’t like it or tire of it. I love seeing your decorating skills transform your new home.

  136. Linda French says:

Yvonne, the curtains don’t look like they serve a purpose. They’re pretty, but it’s obvious they don’t cover (or intend to cover) a window. It’s the very first thing I noticed. They just hang in a corner.

  137. Yvonne, I’ve been in the window treatment business for 30 years, so I can sympathize with finding the right look. Not seeing your space in person, here are some observations I’d make.
My first reaction is wishing the rod spanned the window width, not the short width for a decorative panel. Even is you don’t draw the drape across, I believe the eye is troubled by the hard stop of this short rod.
Secondly, I saw the smocked burlap panels and agree that the color is not right. It appears to be too golden. What about drapes in a softer hue just a bit lighter than your wicker trunk?
The asymmetry does not bother me due to the lack of wall space. I’d start with wider rods, personally.
Good luck and keep us posted on the evolution of this beautifully welcoming space!

  138. Barbara Margevich-Esgro says:

I think the curtains give the windows a finished look but what’s with the small rods?? To me it would look more natural with rods that go the whole length of the window. It would give it a look that the curtains could be closed if needed. The room is cozy and beautifully decorated and I think it would look too busy if the zebra rug was added.

  139. Pamela Howell says:

I think these curtains look “off” balance!!! I have recently installed plantation shutters and am sooo happy with them. Check into them, you might like them as well!

  140. I agree with the other lady with some Roman shades
That way to have some coverage & a little privately if you need it. I luv the look when they are rolled up to the top for depthless to Devine the window . I wish you luck in picking out your favorite design from some of us

  141. Barbara A Karas says:

Yes, they add the softness needed, but leave plenty of light in also. No to Zebra but that’s just me. Again, if it were my room I would want to see a little less stuff/texture and a little more wall space/open space. Love what you do and it gives me (everyone) great ideas. How lucky you are to have such a great house with so much style and class. Idea for another day ~ what would you do with the 1990’s typical three bedroom ranch with a great room, with little style or class? Also a great room with a lovely lake view and fireplace on another wall which splits the focal points? Keep up the great work and ideas, you have a lot of talent. Love the house names too ! Stone Gable and Tanglewood ~ wow!!

  142. Sherli Morgan says:

I like the window treatments…not crazy about the rod though, but they look nice. I like the current rug for summer..bring the zebra back in the fall.

  143. Personally, I like the windows without curtains. I think those curtains, but I am not a fan of the rod. I think if it were different then the curtains would work. Your home is beautiful and I love seeing how you decorate. Please come help me declutter my house.

  144. Kathleen F says:

I really love the way your room is coming along. The curtains look great and add some weight /softness without overpowering it at all. I personally think you should not bring the zebra rug into this room, but that’s just me. Beautiful taste as always…Great work

  145. I know you like neutral and have been using a gold for the color BUT this room needs something to say something. I believe you might be happier with those panels if you put some Roman shades up with a beautiful print fabric and used it on a pillow or chair as well.

  146. thumbs down on the curtains. I hate animal prints, so thumbs down on the zebra rug.

  147. Carol Tyler says:

Hunter Douglas makes a soft fold Roman shade. Easy to operate, and looks good when up. Check it out! They have beautiful fabrics. I think the draperies and hardware are too much in this room. It really is a lovely room!

  148. I love fabric on windows. I think blinds alone are stark. I have a similar problem with wall space in my dinning room. I have my rods across the entire top of the window with narrow smocked linen curtains drawn back To one side. In your situation (wanting your fireplace the focal point) I would mount my curtains on a hidden rod. The rods draw too much attention and too much contrast to the softness of your room

  149. I’m in a ‘less is more’ phase. I like it better without the curtains. Simpler.

  150. I like the curtains. Very soft. But than I love everything you do.

  151. Curtains should stay but maybe black curtain rods that go the whole way across the window. Perhaps a wide border down the side of the curtains, some sort of black design. The wicker chest should be replaced with a large green plant. All in all, a very lovely room.

    1. I agree a plant would look great in the corner

  152. I am not a fan of the curtains. They are not functional and seem “bunched” in the corners.
Have you thought about a structured window topper made of wood and either painted or stained or covered with a neutral fabric?
Also “no” to the zebra rug.
Hope you find a solution that works for you.

  153. I like the softness the curtains bring to the window and the room. However, the rods need to be extended across the window. I agree with one of your other readers when she suggested roman shades. I think they would give the room some color and texture and I have recently seen some designers use them with blinds, somewhat of an adjustable valance if you will.

  154. Christine Clark says:

I love the curtains. Softens the room. So pretty! Keep them.

  155. Keep the curtains! Looks soft and beautiful. Definitely softens the room as I think you wanted!

  156. Such a lovely room Yvonne! I too feel like the curtains are a distraction. I like the idea of plantation shutters. We just got them this year and love them. They are so versatile for letting light in or keeping it out. A cornice board would be fine all or just nothing on the windows. I don’t think I would bring the zebra rug in. I know whatever you choose will be fabulous. Good luck choosing as you are getting so many opinions!!

  157. The curtains are fine but I think you need a curtain rod or valance that goes all the way across the window

  158. No to the curtains. I have beautiful woodwork above windows and wooden blinds. Shutters would also be beautiful.

  159. I’ve been following you for years and love everything you do. However, I am not a fan of the hardware and curtains you chose. My first reaction was that it looked like a shower curtain. I like the idea of white plantation shutters or a soft shade. No on the zebra rug–prefer that in a bedroom. Just my humble opinion. Have a great day!

  160. The curtains are like a woman that forgot to add accessories to her outfit. They don’t detract but they don’t add to the ambiance. I love blinds also so I appreciate the previous suggestion of a cornice or valance. I have a corner window with blinds that would not accommodate curtains. I had a contemporary valance made and am pleased with the look.

As a recent subscriber to your blog, I was attracted by your mastery of neutrals. You are very brave to ask for suggestions. I hope one of them strikes you as perfect for your room

  161. The curtains look lovely. I agree with others who think the rods are the problem. They should extend across the window.

  162. Good Morning,
I don’t like the curtains. When looking at the picture, the curtains draw my eyes up and away from the room. I like the windows without curtains.
For summer I like the area rug you have, you could bring the zebra rug in for fall with black accents? Whatever you decide, your home is beautiful.

  163. Kay Musselwhite says:

If I walked into that room the first thing that would catch my eye would be those curtains and rods.
I would probably use a full length window rod across the window and a sheer Type..(maybe gauze.) Curtain pulled to the one side.
That is just my opinion….I love your Style of decorating and you are one of my favorites to follow.
You have beautiful taste and you do not clutter your rooms.
I get a lot of wonderful ideas from you since I have started following you!

    1. I agree. Full rod across the window. Then drape across. The rings bunched together at the top looks very busy. Your room is beautiful. Keep experimenting. You have been an inspiration to me. Thanks.

  164. I love the curtains, they soften the room without being fussy. Your style is wonderful, I look forward to your daily posts. May I ask where you found the two half mirrors over the lovely chest? I been looking everywhere I know of and just can’t seem to find anything quite like the ones you have. Any recommendations are appreciated.

  165. I think your room is white/neutral and needs some warmth added in. One way I would achieve that is through wood blinds on the windows. Secondly, I would hang the single drape panel up higher on a rod that goes across the entire window. I would change out the drapes with the seasons with a spring/summer drape and a fall/winter look. Lastly, I would bring back the zebra rug for the fall/winter look. Hope this helps.

  166. I’ve been following you for years! Love your style and I’ve learned so much from you!
But I don’t think this look is working…..what about just a valance in a light color going from the height of these curtain rods and just far enough down to cover the blinds when they’re pulled up.
I guess valances are kind of “out” but I have a similar look-blinds and balances and I love it!
I’d let go of the zebra rug, but I think it’s because I’m so conservative! ?

  167. I like the curtains and the rods. I really don’t like seeing the stacked blinds at the top. I believe that detracts from the whole window.
I’d probably add the rug in the winter and have the lighter summer look

  168. Your home is so inviting! Since your goals for your windows are softness and light and to retain your your existing blinds, I would suggest sheers on window width rods. I would use light metal or whitewashed wood rods to coordinate with your room.

The zebra rug is such a fun accent, but I think it might compete with your fireplace for the focal point in this light and summery room. Several others suggested to use it in the fall, which I agree could be a good option.

Another idea is to put the rug in your new office! You already have a few black accents with your picture frames, wall mirror, and side table. It’s your creative space, and you might be happy with the rug in there!

Can’t wait to see what you decide, and I’m also looking forward to seeing your wonderful kitchen remodel! Thank you for your heart for family and faith in the Lord. Your home reflects His love!

  169. Honestly Yvonne I am not a fan of having a curtain on just one side of window unless it is draped to the side, just looks a little undone. So, I I would either have a full drape or none at all. I do love your zebra rug.

  170. I like just the blinds for the Spring and summer and not the ,zebra rug.

  171. I like the curtains, they do soften the room, but I feel like something is “off”. Maybe the color of the rod isn’t jiving with me? I can’t quite put my finger on it.
I think the zebra rug would look great layered in here, but I can also understand that you want to give Tanglewood it’s own personality and not replicate every design element you used in StoneGable- but Yvonne, you nailed it in your last home! Some would say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Try the zebra in here for awhile. A wise blogger I have followed for some time once said “every room needs a bit of black”. ?

  172. I like the color and softness of this pair . I would suggest a rod that rounded the corner and hung part of each on the outer wall. You have enough fabric hanging to do that, and it would really finish it off . xoxo , M

  173. Jan Kinman says:

    Good Morning Yvonne,
How about a textured sheer with wood rods in a white wash?
    Blessings, Jan

  174. I would try a fabric similar to the bed skirt in your summer bed room, linen color and texture change the basket above the fireplace to a similar color. maybe that will bring things together? You have many natural colors and textures in the room that are beautiful. I think it just might be a little too much white. Just so you know I look to you for inspiration.

  175. Linda Duncan says:

How about adding something architectural over the windows it would add something a little more interest at the window. Layering the zebra rug would look alright also. I would raise the curtains up higher to the ceiling if possible.

  176. Yvonne, the curtains are nice, but I don’t think they add to the room or are necessary, even though the room is neutral its got a lot going on, the shades on the window are enough and could be lowered a bit to show up. The wood work around the window is nice decorative touch itself.

I like the rug you have for summer and also agree with others about adding the zebra rug back in the cooler months

  177. I think they complete the windows without being obtrusive. They definitely provide some softness and the color is perfect. They’re like a little demure “eyeliner” lending a modest appearance to the eyes of your great room! .

  178. I think it’s the curtain hardware the is throwing you off. When I look at your room, my eyes goes from the left curtain rod to the fireplace, then to the right curtain rod. Keep the curtains. They soften the windows; but change the hardware or hang the curtains rod pocket style. So the rods don’t jump out at you.
Skip the zebra rug. It will lessen the focal point of the fireplace.
Can’t wait to see what you decide.

  179. This room is lovely, bright and summery. I would try a full rod to cover the top of the blinds, then softly tie them back, so as not to block the light or the beautiful view. Also agree with others who suggest the zebra rug be saved for Fall. Cannot wait to see the kitchen. Love your new home, as well as older blogs on Stonegable. Happy decision making.

  180. ps….maybe the wicker trunk is too big?

  181. I’m just not a fan of the curtains, and especially not on the short rods. Have you thought of just a light woven wood blind, pulled up as a valance, and hung above the windows? I think that would add additional texture and color to the room. It would also hid the existing pulled up blinds. Definitely bring back the zebra rug in the fall!

  182. Three suggestions-
    1. Purchase some iron finish rods that span the width of the window. Similar finish to your cute lamp on the sideboard on the right. (Short panel rods are a pet peeve of mine- sorry, truth!)

    2. Add some ribbon tape or fringe to the leading edge of the window to add some texture. I would use neutral color.

    3. Yes, bring back your zebra rug.

  183. I always admire your decorating style but I think the curtains are a “miss”. As soon as I started scrolling down the first photo I thought something felt off. It was the curtains. I don’t think they add anything to the room. Your fireplace is lovely and the curtains distract from that wall.

  184. I love seeing your beautiful home, Yvonne. You are an inspiration to so many. I have found this question difficult to answer. Although your shutters look elegant, I imagine that in winter when it is dark you might welcome some more softness, One option might be a false roman blind in a fabric using the colours of the cushions on your chairs. The false roman blind has the folds permanently stitched down the sides so that it cannot be lowered and also does not need a cord. It provides interest at the top of the window and would hide your shutters when they are up. In the winter you can drop and close your shutters but still have some interest at the top. I personally would not use the zebra rug, but there is nothing lost in trying it. Whatever you choose it will be a beautiful room. I hope that you kitchen is progressing well.

  185. Have you thought about shades for for that room? They can be left down and you can still see through them or you could raise them during the day. We have some in our sunroom and love them. They let the light through but yet provide privacy.

  186. I’m in the same predicament. I like the openness of the windows but not a fan of the side curtain. I would rather hide the blinds that are there with a short valance with a light muted pattern to keep your white look. Perhaps a boxed valance in a blonde wood. The valance will do the trick and not steal the show from the beautiful windows while keeping the space open and wide.

  187. Your room looks great without curtains, but I also like the softness that they would bring to a room. I think I would try more of a lightweight, semi-sheer fabric on your windows. Something softer and less stiff-looking. I would probably not add the zebra rug in this room. Maybe it would work in another room .

  188. I love every thing you do and also that you share all your wonderful ideas. You are a breath of fresh air. Thank you.
I like the curtains but the rod is wrong. I would either make the rod go completely across the window or i would pocket style the curtains.

I think the zebra rug could be brought back in at some point but right now i like the freshness of the room the way it is.

  189. The room is beautiful.
You might consider the rods going all the way across & a border on the curtains.

  190. Deborah Grizzard says:

    Hi Yvonne,
I think the idea is great and the curtains look really good, but the curtain rods are not flowing with the rest of the room. I am not seeing any silver in the room which to me, makes the rods look out of place. I see either wooden ones that pick up the beautiful wood tones you have or even black that would pick up the blacks accents you have, not thick but thin. AND if you do bring back your zebra rug, (which I think would give it a real punch of wow), the black would be my choice.

  191. I think they look great you’ve done a good job. I’d keep them definitely. Have a great day and stay safe.

  192. Kerri McWhirter says:

I think the half curtain looks a little odd. Unnecessary bulk. Maybe a fig tree in a corner or a burlap lampshade rather than white if you feel the need to fill the space. Your home is beautiful. The most important thing is do you love it.

  193. You decorate beautifully, but since you asked, I would recommend a cornice in a shape you design covered in a fabric using the soft neutrals you do so well. I think well done cornices are like eyebrows on a beautiful face – they soften the face without detracting from its other beautiful features. I would like to see a green plant in the corner without the basket and no zebra rug. Looking forward to seeing what you decide!

  194. I am a designer. Curtains soften the straight lines and sever angles of a window. Several of my clients have asked about the short rods like the ones that you have used. In my opinion, they appear disjointed. Go ahead and use a full rod across the top of the window. You can try pulling the top of the curtain all the way across and draping it back or pulled to the side as you currently have it styled. The rod and rings must be the same finish. I would use a wooden, white or light toned distressed, glazed rod and rings. I have had to do many myself, as there doesn’t seem to be a large market for them. It will be easy for you, as you are an excellent DIYer! Your home is beautiful and I can’t wait to see what you decide.

  195. The curtains look nice. Absolutely yes to the zebra rug! I feel like your room needs more pattern.

  196. I would add Roman Blinds to your windows They will hide the existing blind and add interest without taking away from your fireplace. They can be stationary or a working blind. Keep them white with a pretty band. You’re welcome! ?
Yes! Bring back the zebra rug!

  197. Wendelin dunado says:

Could you invest in clear Acrylic rod, finial and rings to camouflage the hanging hardware? I think the curtains would blend in seamlessly with that adjustment. Another idea would be just a decorative but simple patterned or textured balance.

  198. I like the white curtains; they soften the room. You should add some silver to help incorporate the rods. I would definitely bring in the zebra rug to add a little pop. Stay safe and healthy.

  199. First of all, I love your new home, and like how it is all coming together with your wonderful touches. As for your curtains, I feel like something is missing. Have you considered a subtle border sewn onto the curtains to give them a little oomph??

  200. I like the curtains. I, like many others, think they should be raised to ceiling height and put on a rod that spans the entire window, even if the curtain itself is only on one side. I would use a rod that is less stately, maybe a white wood.

I would leave the zebra rug out for now and bring it in during the fall for more texture and contrast.

  201. Michelle Schmidt says:

I think it’s the rod and rings color and finish that is off, maybe a light wood would be warmer and more in keeping with the furnishings! I agree with others, the short rods look awkward. I would rather see full rods with the curtains pulled to the side.

  202. This is my second comment on this post, lol. If you decide against curtains I think cornices covered in the right fabric would be a great option. They would hide the blinds when they are pulled up and still add some softness due to being covered in fabric, rather than using painted wood. And I just wanted to comment that I love the arrangement you put on and above your mantel.

  203. Traci Rudakas says:

I love the white! I have them in my rooms too. They add a bit of softness and texture without screaming for attention!

  204. Lucia Corwin says:

I love the room – big yes to the curtains, no to the zebra rug, right idea with the basket but too big. I love the texture of the basket – what about a plant in a wonderful basket. Feel like it needs the green plant in the corner to make everything else “jump”. I get so many beautiful ideas from you – I look forward to your postings.

  205. Carol Heartfelt Whimsies says:

Love the softness they add! The perfect color and style to add simple elegance to the space!

  206. I like drapes at the sides of your windows but even though you have hung them higher then your top frame I think they need to be a bit higher. They add softness and they add the height you need to balance the weight of your fireplace. Unfortunately, I don’t think those are the correct draperies.
Now to what I see as the real problem on that wall. You said you want to focus on the fireplace. When I look at the full picture of that wall, your fireplace blends into everything else. I doesn’t stand out….It doesn’t have the definition that is needed for a focal point in a room. My eye goes to your mantle accessories and the fireplace opening, but not the fireplace itself. If your room was in one of my clients homes, I would have them paint the mantle and surround in a soft gray. Sorry, I have strayed. I know you were asking about your drapes…

  207. I was going to suggest an ivory curtain before I saw what you did. A nd I had the same thought about inky in the far side. My vote is a thumbs up.

  208. Betsy Searcy Haggerty says:

    Yvonne,
I think you might try putting the zebra rug down. You nee to pull in a little more black to anchor the space.
The curtains are beautiful, but the short rods are a distraction. Not sure what the solution is.

Also, I love the wood stacked tray that is at the end of the sofa, but it doesn’t work there very well.
It is just sort of misplaced in the living room and makes that entry space feel squeezed up and busy. It stops the flow. I’m not sure quite how to describe it, since I am not a professional.

I do appreciate all of your decorating skills and style. You have inspired me.

  209. I personally Like the room without the curtains. The curtains are beautiful but for me it doesn’t quite work.

  210. In your situation (wanting your fireplace the focal point) I would mount my curtains on a hidden rod. The rods draw too much attention and too much contrast to the softness of your room.
    ditto….
Curtains – yes, Hardware – not so much. Lovely room! 😉

  211. Not fond of the half curtain rod. I agree with Sharon. Maybe a cornice covered in a light colored fabric.

  212. I would suggest taking the curtains and rods down. Sit with it for a week and see and experience the open space and concentrate on the focal point being the fireplace. Take a picture. Then consider Invisioning cornices in a light neutral soft fabric or a stationary Roman shade over each window.

  213. Your room is beautiful! I’m not crazy about the short little rod there. It seems a bit off. But I don’t know what the answer is. Maybe a regular rod with the curtain pushed to the side? Thank you for your blog!

  214. Monique B says:

I like the curtain panels but not a fan of the tabs and rod, might be a bit too industrial?

  215. When I look at photos #2-4, what I am seeing is a whole lot of white. Which is probably why you started out with the burlap curtains. Channeling my inner Joanna Gaines (if, in fact, I am able to do that!) I would suggest that you have a somewhat wood valance, stained brown, installed to cover the curtain rods. Hopefully that would balance out the other wood tones in the room without being overwhelming.

    1. What I meant to say, (“a somewhat wood valance”) but didn’t quite type it correctly, is that I would keep the height of the wood valance from being too tall so that it adds a touch of wood without overpowering the space.

  216. linda hanley says:

they do nothing for me, they just look wrong for some reason. maybe a white sheer or a wider curtain. I would go with no curtain and rattan shades

  217. I think the curtains in this room look out of place. I know you like the blinds, but have you considered replacing them with Roman Shades? I put white ones in my family room. They look good when up and allow light when down.

  218. I like the curtains and I think they add to the room feeling more cozy. I think what is something I’d like to see is full curtain rods across the entire window. I am not opposed to the short rods in other installations and I totally get why you did it, but I’m not sure about them here for some reason. They look good overall, no doubt about that!

  219. I like the softness the fabric adds to the room but I think a regular length rod in a bronze would make the window look more complete instead of cut off.The zebra rug may be a bit much for the softness of the room.Keep us posted with your final decision !!

  220. I like the windows better without the curtains. A fabric blind with a header and a soft pattern might look nice.

  221. Hello, curtains should stay but: the rod needs to extend to 2-3 inches beyond the window openings, the diameter needs to be narrow (1/2″ to 5/8″) and black, no fancy finials on the ends. It should be hung almost to the ceiling. The real difference will be in the way you hang them. You can use rings, but use drapery hooks that will go into the ring (do not use the clip part) in the curtain so that the rings hardly show (the rings should be small enough to just fit over the rod.). The effect then, is that the curtain top is JUST below the rod. Style the curtains to the wall side without any “draping”. Because our tastes are similar, I know you will be happy with this and it is understated elegant. The rug is a neutral add. It can be used as a nice change up.

  222. Patti sterne says:

Hi Yvonne, I love your room. My opinion is bring the zebra rug back, I would take the curtains down.

  223. Kimberly Voss says:

Love the curtains! Ditch the zebra rug. Thanks for asking! Loving your new home!

  224. Bonnie Bell says:

I would move the rod up to the top of where the ceiling hits the wall. I feel like there are to many breaks and it chops the wall up. I really think you do not need the curtains at all. I like the openness of not having the curtains.

  225. I am not a fan of the short rod, I think it draws too much attention to the rod. I know you love your wonderful wood blinds, but what if you took them down and tried roman shades or bamboo blinds, you can always put them back up if you don’t like them.

  226. Teddee Grace says:

You received a lot of feedback so I don’t know, since I haven’t read the comments, whether I have anything valuable to add, but I think the short rod just catches my eye and adds another element that makes this area look too busy. I agree the windows look bare without something, but if I were going to add curtains I’d take them all the way to the ceiling and I’d make the rod…and the curtains…as inconspicuous as possible.

  227. Rhonda Storey says:

Personally, I think the curtains are lovely Yvonne! You should do what you like in the room, because you will see it everyday. The color is perfect to me because it doesn’t take away from the rest of the room and shout “look at me”! I would probably change the rod also, but that’s just me. I prefer a rod that goes across the window even if the curtains are only on one side. As usual, you have done a beautiful job with your new home. You are such an inspiration to me, and I can’t wait to see your new kitchen!

  228. Christine says:

It’s not the drapes, it’s the rod. It looks too much like a shower rod. No to the zebra rug.

  229. I must agree with many who have posted. While the color of the drapes is lovely, the rod is a distraction in its color and length. Rather than focusing on the fireplace, the eye is drawn to the rod because it simply doesn’t “fit.”

  230. Sandy Lofgren says:

I have never been a fan of drapery panels on one side, I think you could get narrower panels in a
white sheer on both sides of the windows, it will soften the windows, but keep it light. They don’t have to cover to much of the window with narrow panels. Beautiful room.

  231. Janet Lampman says:

My two cents worth…I do agree that the curtain rods are a major distraction. I think a roman shade that could be mounted outside the blinds on the window frame possibly would be a much better option – could be either functional or stationary since you have the blinds in place. Good luck!

  232. I like the linen curtains but everything in my decor has to have a function. The short curtain rod seems awkward to me. In order to work out, I would like to see a full length curtain rod so that the curtain can cover the window if needed. I would probably use a bronze or darker colored rod. Good luck deciding!

  233. Yvonne,
    I loved the Gable house…
That being said, it is my opinion that this room does not need the rod or drapes. I feel it closes in and clutters a beautiful space.
I’d love to see a round table in the center area.
    Keep on inspiring us!
    Tink

  234. Hi Yvonne,
I feel that your great room looks great already, so yup, my opinion is that it will be better off w/o any curtains.
Oh yes, do bring back the zebra for the “umph” factor!

  235. No curtains. They take your eyes away from the fireplace – ?

  236. I like the curtains for summer & no zebra rug for summer!

  237. Karen Jacobson says:

I think you should try a Roman shade or treatment that is just on the upper part of the window.

  238. I think the zebra rug throws everything off. Always did. And I prefer the no curtain look almost always unless you need the privacy. Makes it look airy and fresh with no drapes or curtains and your view is gorgeous!

  239. Barbara Edwards Armacost says:

You are right a curtain on each side would not work because of the fireplace. But I wonder if you put a rod across the entire top of the window with a curtain but then pull the curtain to one side with a hold back. Just a thought. The curtains are light enough and do soften the room. I like them the way they are too!!

  240. I have the same exact configuration in my house, only the windows are totally bare. No need for any cover, as that side of my house is totally isolated. My eye loves the simplicity of the bare windows for my house, and although I do love curtains, I feel the same about your room. The curtains, even though they are neutral, seem to clutter the room and detract from its beauty.

I do love the pop of color from the seasonal sunflowers!!

  241. Marilyn Steele says:

Love the white curtains! Definitely keep them. Prefer the short/half rod. The full rid just looks like a lot of unnecessary metal across the top of the window with no purpose. Bring back the zebra rug at the end of summer. And I’d suggest moving the wicker chest in the corner out and placing a tasteful large vase or piece of tall ceramic – maybe a decorative garden seat – in a soft quiet shade on the floor in place of the chest.

  242. Claire Graham says:

I had a similar situation on either side of my fireplace.
For years I thought I didn’t have room for panels on both sides.
A designer came in and did not see the space in the same way.
Now I have a rod all the way across and panels on both sides and it finally looks perfect.

  243. Michele Blocker says:

Hello Yvonne, I love your lovely home and have followed you for several years. My option (for whatever it is worth). The room is so bright and cheery that I like the softness the curtains bring without diminishing the light. I do however agree that it looks better with the curtain rod going over the entire window for symmetry. I also agree that your eye is drawn to the rod rather than the fireplace. What about doing the curtain rod in a white color similar to the wall and the finials in a glass ball so it is visible but more of a tone on tone, without drawing your eye to it?
Keep up the great work and God bless you!!!!

  244. I had the same issue not knowing what I wanted. Finally I added small rods at the ends of each of my windows. Instead of linen or heavy drapery I used ivory sheers with a very light print through out. They make the room complete.

  245. Miche Ortega says:

Unfortunately, I couldn’t see any of the pictures posted throughout the blog, but from the four pictures at the end, I would definitely keep the curtains (I am a fabric freak), and put a longer rod over the windows for balance. I would probably save the zebra rug for the fall and winter months for warmth. Hope this helps!

  246. Love the curtains and rod just the way you had them initially. I don’t like the full rod, it takes away from the fireplace and my eyes went directly to the rod. Beautiful room!

  247. Hi Yvonne. I love your new house. I really like the linen drapes in the great room. I prefer the rods going all the way across the tops of the windows. And YES, bring back the zebra rug!

  248. Nancy Brantley says:

As if another confusing opinion will help?? I would put a black farmhouse rod across entire window but do not put finial at wall end and choose a finial that is large like rod. Move rod up close to ceiling. Take down basket and sign and put black or black distressed large object up. I think black is needed to highlight fireplace and your pretty neutrals. Bring rug back. I say NO on any valance and don’t change blinds. You could put black and burlap trim on sides of curtain.

  249. I like these light curtains. Leave them where they are but put a thin rod across the entire window. The rods don’t need to be white, just light. You have shades of neutrals throughout so if it reads as neutral, it will blend.

I would bring the zebra rug back for fall and put out slightly darker fall-ish accessories. The rug lends texture and coziness.

Thanks for all you do and show us!

  250. Lee Ann Brander says:

My first thought was that the curtain rod should go across the window. I am not a fan of just putting a curtain on the bare wall. I like the illusion that you can pull the covering across the window even though you are not.
I like the white linen curtain and would leave the zebra rug out. It creates a more formal atmosphere.

  251. I love the new curtains. They soften the space and add another layer. They do not take away from the room. I prefer the shorter rod. The long rod to me looks like something is missing. I use a short rod in my family room to enhance my shutters.

  252. Not a fan of curtains – even with a wider rod! Looking at 1 window – it is alright. But the wide angle view of the room- not so much!!! It looks like you forgot to finish! Leave curtainless- let the blinds do the job as needed!

  253. Lorraine Wicklund says:

No to the zebra rug, it looks lovely without it…I personally prefer the windows without either of those choices…..you will come up with right choice. ❤️

  254. Andrea Harmann says:

Hi Yvonne, since I am by root European I am used to have curtains. In all my American homes I always used curtains/sheer to complete the look of a room. Personally I feel that a room looks naked and not completed without curtains I think that a rod going across the window looks fine and does not take the view from the fireplace. However, I like the last recommendation from Michele about a white rod with a glass ball I like the linen curtains as well. Very fitting to the rest of the décor. I am using in my family room even tassel tie backs with the curtains. I hope that helps. Good luck with all your projects. Don’t forget, even with input from others you and your family have to be comfortable with what you decide. Stay safe and healthy!

  255. Ditch the curtains unless they are functional.

  256. Have you tried hanging a pretty white sheer just over the window? I use white tension rods to get the look before putting holes for the hardware. I think the problem is your eye goes to the hardware, it needs to disappear into the wall. Also, curtains just over the window would maybe keep your fireplace as a focal point. Hope this helps. Clara☺️

    1. I use the tension rod inside the window frame to get the look then put the hardware up where it’s needed if I like the look.

  257. Hi Yvonne, I am late to the game on this one! I have neutral cream-colored curtains on the windows on each side of my fireplace as well. I first thought your curtains should have a pattern/pop of color that you would love, of course. However, you said you want your fireplace to be the focal point. I did, too, at our home. After years of living with a white fireplace, I painted it SW Fawn Brindle, a brownish gray. My fireplace looks so lovely now. I hope this helps!

  258. Jeanne Kirby says:

Love the curtains on the short rod. Perhaps something light in color but with a texture or very light pattern such as a ticking stripe. Needs a shot of texture to balance all of the texture in the room.

  259. Sandra Weatherford says:

I like the suggestion of using the full rod, but it still makes the window a little heavy on one side. I sort of envision a full rod as well, except bringing it in closer to the framing and using some type of light weight sheer (or lace) to use drape across the rod–again very light weight, not a lot of fabric fullness (swag on rod and hangs down each side). Could be one of your whites or creams or even a little darker like taupe, wheat, etc to play against the dark pieces that you have sitting around the room.

  260. Joyce Ciembronowicz says:

Why have draperies if they are not functional. The only blur I see in the pictures are the pulled up blinds on the windows. Why not have something simple, light and airy like an extra long ?valance? that you tie up with burlap or ribbon? I find the long draperies intrusive to the space. Just my opinion on this. Love, love, love your style and creativeness.

  261. Hi

Yes i like the curtains and the rod across the window. Thank you for asking .

I also love your Sunday posts.

    Be Safe Hugs
    Shirley

  262. White curtain with short rod ?… to keep with the feel of the room.
Definitively bring the zebra rug back: it really makes a statement and is very appealing ?.

  263. Traci A Jennings says:

I am for bringing the zebra rug back.
I like the curtain rod going across the whole window too.
You have a beautiful home Yvonne.

  264. My two cents: no zebra rug, and curtain rod across top of window but not as far as I see it in mock up. It appears infringing in the fireplace area too much.

  265. Hmmmmm
I think those curtains get lost.
    Sheers maybe?
    How about cornice???

  266. BONNIE SMALLEY says:

BLACK ROD – SHEER WHITE CURTAINS

  267. Liked the latest white drapes with small curtain rods. At the end of the day, whatever makes you comfortable.

  268. Jane Harris Recchia says:

    Yvonne,
Now that the curtains are up, i think the wicker trunk becomes too dark and heavy looking. Don’t you have a fiddle leaf tree? I think it would be perfect in that corner, draw the eye & accentuate the view.
Love how things are coming along!
    Jane

  269. Terri Smith says:

Yvonne, you have totally nailed it looks great and has your style all over. I love the side curtain rods looks so light and simple. Your home is becoming you love it!!

  270. Donna Oliphint says:

Not a fan of the 1 panel drapery, especially with the short rod that screams “unusable”. I think it would be better to split the panel into two narrower 1 width panels and have one on each side of the window covering the trim work and going slightly into the windowpanes. Pretty sure you have enough wall space on each side for that without interfering with the fireplace. If you are opposed to that, I think you should put a shaped valance or cornice with trim over the windows to add some interest and cover the blinds in the raised position.

  271. Polly Trocchia says:

I love the curtains and like the curtain rod going across the window, it adds balance. I would definitely not put a zebra rug in that room.

  272. Have you thought about a sheer? Would be seen but not so bulky. Maybe put a soft beige or something in a sheer.

  273. betteff@mac.com says:

As a designer, sometimes less is more! Take them down!

  274. Elaine Wesselman says:

Yes! Zebra rug! I like the rod going across window but not quite as far as example. LOVE THE WHITE CURTAINS. They do not distract from other decor! Looks beautiful!

  275. I just don’t think the rid across the whole panel is pleading to the eye. Just adds more stark horizontal lines across the whole room. I vote no curtains at all or lower the rod to window height and use more neutral hardware

  276. Honestly, I don’t care for either short rod or full rod. Sometimes less is more. I wouldn’t put anything up if you can’t see in. Your home is lovely. You truly have great taste. Blessings!

  277. My opinion, no curtains, no curtain rod and no rug . I think the open windows are perfect for the view you have. It also makes the room appear larger without anymore window dressing. I also feel the rug would end up being the focal point of the room, drawing your eye down to the floor. I thought you wanted the accent to be the view. Anxious to see your final result. ?

  278. Yvonne,
Your room is lovely. I believe if you are looking for an “open window” concept maybe a very light casual sheer that is swagged away from the fireplace could work. What you have seems very heavy to me. I would say no to the zebra rug.

  279. Maureen Karon says:

Lose the curtains completely. Try a balance instead with wood in similar tones to what is already in the room

  280. Zebra rug: room looks good without it but would look good with it too. I think a full length light curtain rod would look better. The short one looks unfinished.

  281. LindaSonia says:

I would have done a rod across the whole window with a tab top sheer curtain panel in cream or ivory covering the whole window. The tab top panel would have a sheer body but solid borders and tabs in a different fabric, perhaps a linen in cream or ivory or even in a color, pale blue or a muted shade of your choice.

  282. The first thing that jumps out at me is the curtain rods need to go across the window, even though you are not going to use the length. I have a window in my living room like that, too. Otherwise, I like the curtains.

  283. loving all the Stone Gable inspiration. My suggestion is to eliminate the side window treatments. Install decorative rod far enough above top of window for a”topper or valance” treatment just grazing the very top of window. Thus focusing on the beautiful high ceilings and would appear more open. Yes please bring back the ZEBRA RUG.

  284. Oh gosh, Yvonne, you really asked for it! I’ll start by saying I’m not sure what you should do but here’s what I would do: I would use white wooden rods, using a decorative turned wood that rest on wooden brackets. I would put these just above the actual window frame. Unlike everyone else I’m not a fan of just raising curtain rods to the middle of the wall above the window. I believe that is what is so distracting to everyone’s eye. I would also use an off white either batiste or sheer rod pocket drawn to at least the middle of the rod and tied back. This would make a frame for your fireplace instead of detracting from it.
I would also add a green plant and consider replacing the tiered table with the large basket. I’m not a fan of the zebra rug and think it’s time has come and gone. You are a brave woman for asking.

  285. Alice Jane says:

Very interesting comments and suggestions and the ones that resonate with you will help you to decide. I think the short rods are distracting and annoying in that they serve no real purpose. I would go with a white rod with a opaque but sheer panel covering and softening the window without blocking the view. I would not add a zebra rug but I suggest you put it down for a day or so and see how it looks to you. In my mind it seems to fit better with fall and winter warm and cozy decor. You are the ultimate judge and make wonderful choices!

  286. I like the look of the rod right across. Just looks more finished, even with the curtain on one side. Hope this helps

  287. Yvonne, I really like the curtains. They actually define the space and draw your eye to the fireplace much more than without them. I like the idea of a sheer with tie back as well, especially if you don’t plan on closing them. Love the room !!!

  288. Sandra Fischer says:

I see a bit of yellow on the mantle so why not add another touch of it to the room like the pillow on the chair which is rather bland to me .. a touch of yellow would give the room an extra punch

  289. Yvonne, the curtains DO add a softness to the room, so I say keep them. But, I don’t care for the rod that goes across the window. Just my opinion.

  290. I like the shorter rods.,Also try swapping your glass vase with sticks to the right and putting the candlestick on the inside right. No, the zebra rug would detract from the balance of color you have now. Thanks for letting us weigh in. Love it that you share you Christian world view with so many!!

  291. I vote no on curtains What about cornice boards? Undecided on zebra rug.

  292. I do like the curtains however they just need something, like maybe a piece of trim on the edge. There just a lot of white going on in that wall.

  293. I like the curtains a lot! But for some reason I’m not crazy about the rods. They seem so “heavy” for the linen curtains. Maybe if the diameter was a little smaller??? The room is beautiful and I do think the curtains add softness. I know whatever you decide will be perfect!

  294. OMGoodness!!! You have opened the floodgates of readers’ opinions! Have you EVER had more responses in ONE day??? I wanted a second word, after viewing your mock up photos. This post has entertained me all day long. OK..After much thought, I really love the idea of acrylic / lucite rods across the entire window and placed as high as possible. They are classic and will not take away from your fireplace. The rings could be acrylic or the metal of your choice. I have been anxious to have neutral panels in my den, with a band in a Greek key design on the inner side. Wouldn’t it be fun to have a removable band that could be removed or easily changed out??? That would be a great DIY project for you to create for your many readers. Would velcro work??? Cannot wait to see what you choose to do about your window treatments!

  295. Linda Charlton says:

I like the linen curtains with no rod going across the wall. I like the short rods. The long rod really has no purpose with no curtain running across it.

  296. First, your style is flawless, so whatever you do it will be beautiful! I, too, had the same problem. We have 10 foot ceilings with windows all along the back of the house because we, too, live on a golf course. I did not want to block any of the view, so I chose half rods with white shears. It gives the room a light and airy look while providing a “frame” for the picture of the outdoors the windows provide.

  297. No to the Zebra rug animal print had it day. No to the curtains, you are detracting for the for the loveliness of the room and they are so not needed!

  298. Christine Kennedy says:

My preference would be a simple board mounted valance that would hide the drawn up blinds and simplify this area. This would allow the fireplace to be more of a focal point and give a cleaner look with some softness of fabric. It would also look good when blinds are down!

  299. I think simplicity is the best style for window treatments in this room. I would love to see plantation shutters or shutters on the bottom half of the windows. Light color woven blinds might look nice as well. Curtains and rods are too fussy and distracting here! No to the zebra rug. A ficus, palm or fiddle leaf in a basket would look great in that corner. Thanks for letting us play Yvonne for a moment!

  300. Love the curtains. I do think they soften the room especially with a gentle breeze. But I don’t like the rods. They style doesn’t match the room.
    Hugs!

  301. I would do a full rod and then instead of long curtains I would try a valance. You just want to soften up the wall and not really wanting the curtains for privacy.
I would NOT bring back the Zebra rug.

  302. Darlene Sessler says:

Surprise, surprise, Yvonne asking us for a design opinion? I love everything you do but no offense I prefer no curtains. I personally love the light and would not want to compete with the view. The curtains just look too heavy and your eye goes right to them instead of the focal point which I believe is the fireplace. You are the queen of decorating so whatever you decide is the right decision. Your house, your way!!! 🙂

  303. I enjoy your blog and since you asked for opinions…use a longer rod across the window and be able to pull the drape across if needed. The room is so peaceful looking because of the white color. Use the wicker basket somewhere else, not in the living room. That and the three tier table were the first things I saw when I looked at your photo. You wanted your fireplace to be the center of attraction. No zebra rug. That would also pull the eye to another area. Looking forward to what you decide to do. God bless.

  304. Hi Yvonne~ I scanned some of the other comments, and now am going to add my two cents’ worth.;-)

The thing is your room is very lovely, but VERY SAFE. By that I mean everything is SO neutral, that nothing in particular really stands out-including your windows. Take a risk (in a small way, really) and put some cornices up over the windows. Take down any curtains-you will not need them. Use a light golden burlap to go with your pillows and floor rug, if you want to play it classic and neutral. Have Bobby knock you up some wooden ones, then cover with batten and burlap. 😉 I did that in my living room, which has a similar window/fireplace placement. I then made covered fabric buttons (Big Ones) in solid Black fabric because I have a lot of black accents in my room. I placed them on the cornices about every 7-8 in across with a glue gun. This gives an interesting look, without committing to a particular pattern. I then added a fabric valance below the cornices to give even more interest and contrast. I used black and white buffalo check, but you could just use plain, solid valances in your favorite color. This gives a layered look that is really very classic and appealing.

While I do like your zebra rug, I would use it elsewhere in your home, since I think it presents a safety hazard to not only you, but to your guests, as well. It is one of those things that LOOK good in a magazine, but living with it, can sometimes be a challenge. Especially to anyone coming in that is not aware of the two layers. Besides, if you are trying to draw the eyes upward, then the zebra rug would not be helpful, since it would do the opposite, I believe.
All of that said, I really DO LOVE your home! We used to live in the Middletown, Pa. area until about 7 years ago. Beautiful scenery up there and we still have fond memories and friends there. It was only about 25 miles or so, from Lancaster.
Can’t wait to see what you decide-good luck! 🙂

    I

    1. Just reading through the comments. Your readers are all over this.

I saw many suggested cornices. Just popping back in to say a Big No to that idea as they are Out of style.

I had suggested Roman Blinds. But, Sheers on a light rod that extends across the whole windows would be my other suggestion. Skip the rings too. Those rods take your eye straight to your windows bypassing your lovely mantel.

  305. KimberlyAnn says:

I love the curtains!!!!! If you want to soften them even more take away the curtain rings and they will show less rod and blend. YES on your zebra rug girlfriend!!! Xo
    Kimberly

  306. Carol Lupiani says:

I would install an upholstered cornice above the window. It would give some attention to the windows but not take away from the focal point of your fireplace.

  307. After reading all the great suggestions, I want to add that I love the idea of valences, and the right valences would really make the whole room pop!

  308. Hi! I have the same layout in my family room. With actually a smaller amount of space between the fireplace and window and then wall and other end of window. I have custom made curtains with the long pole as others suggested…funny my husband always wanted the short ones haha….so, I told him about this post…anyway, my suggestion is to move the curtains themselves over more to cover more of the window. Not cover it a lot but they seem to be at the end of the window frame to end of wall. Just my two cents. I think it may look a little more cozy.

  309. Dear Yvonne,
my husband was looking over my shoulder and commented, are they re-using plumbing pipes for curtain rods? Your curtains pretty , but I think the rods are too short and stout. If wanting curtains, I would extend the rod to the end of the windows. I would also use that app to mock up raising your rods to just under where the wall meets the ceiling. What if you used the app to look at framing the wall behind the fireplace all the way up to ceiling; maybe a shiplap or some other type of paneling. T o me, the vast expanse of wall needs some verticality.
    Good Luck
    Susan

  310. Melanie Carter says:

    Yvonne,
Is there a reason why you don’t highlight your well-made blinds and leave them down but with the slats open to still let sunlight stream in, similar to plantation shutters? Is it because you want to show the pretty windows in full? Does it break up the view too much for your liking? Just curious what it looks like with them not pulled up.
    Melanie

  311. I suggest a cornice for each window with some type of pattern/color. I have always admired your decorating style but have to admit I miss Stonegable. Good luck!

  312. Gayle Bowling says:

Take the curtains down. Larger decorative molding above the windows would look so much better, especially with the sloped ceiling.

  313. Dear Yvonne,
I really like the look of curtains on each end of the window. It adds warmth to the room. But when I saw the close up, the first thing I noticed was the curtain rod. It tells us that these curtains are just there for decoration and therefore it just seems off and doesn’t blend in with the windows. Even though you don’t intend to use the curtains because of the fireplace, I think it would be better if they LOOK functional. Also, I think the room is lovely. It doesn’t need the zebra rug. I might feel different in the winter.
Thank you for your blog. I read it every day. I feel I have an ally when I discouraged. I can be such a perfectionist.
    Good luck.
    Sharon

  314. Yes to the rod all the way across.
    Yes to the zebra rug.
You’re so sweet to ask our opinions!

  315. Hi Yvonne. I love the look of the curtains you chose. I think they give the room a very cozy feeling. I can just imagine sitting in that room on a rainy day. I would be very happy curled up with a book. I vote no on the zebra rug because it would be a nod to your former home and Tanglewood should have its own style. Thanks for letting us voice our opinion. No matter what decision you make, the room will still look lovely.

  316. Sorry, but I’m not a fan of the curtains, short rod, or longer rod. If the rod blended in with the wall color a little better that might be better, or if the curtain rods were higher at the intersection of the ceiling and wall, that might work better for me. Your rooms always look great, though. Fun to see that you also question yourself. ( I ALWAYS overthink and still am often disappointed with the results!)

  317. Darcie Lee says:

Yvonne, I always love your style and how you’ve used shutters flanking your mirrors or on your fireplace mantle in the past. I believe shutters wold be lovely on the windows. Blessings,

    Darcie

  318. Sharon Ganne says:

I like the addition of the curtains but I would definitely add a valance from the end of the curtains to the ends of the windows to soften the look. I would like to see the valance be long enough to cover the rolled-up levolors which just don’t appeal to me. I’m not sure how I feel about the zebra rug (if it’s from a real zebra) but I like the idea of bringing a little black to your floors.

  319. Danette Green says:

I like the rod not going across for these type of windows. They serve more as an accessory to the window. Also looks more designer. Your fireplace then has its rightful place as being the focal point. I hope you did use the burlap curtains in another part of your home. Those are gorgeous! Love your posts!

    Danette

  320. Honestly, I don’t like it either way, Yvonne. I don’t think you need a curtain. It reminds me of a shower curtain. . Maybe because the rod is too high above the top of the window frame. I don’t know, but I found it very distracting. I think it would look pretty with plantation blinds on those windows.

  321. Nancy Davies says:

Wow! You want our advice??????? Never expected that!!

Here is my ten cents worth. Ditch the curtains and the curtain rails as they are a distraction. Yes, put a cornice or something over the window or frame the windows to make them stand out more.

Perhaps you could undo the blind eight to twelve inches so you can see you have blinds. And by all means bring back Zoe the Zebra or is it Zayne the Zebra??

That is my humble two cents worth. Love your posts!

  322. I don’t like the rods or the curtain rings. Change that and I think you would be just fine. And no zebra rug.

  323. Brenda Zinck says:

I do not like the curtains hung above the window. I think it looks like you just stuck them there. But the picture with the bar going across at the same height didn’t look too bad. Gave it some purpose. Thanks for letting me give my opinion. Your house is gorgeous!!

  324. You are a brave woman, asking for all our opinions!! I have to say I really don’t care for the short rods. To me they just look strange. To my eye it looks as though those side panels could be drawn across the long rods, even if they couldn’t, and I like them, as well as the drapes you’ve used. I’m surprised to hear so many people recommend sheers. I guess I didn’t really think anybody used those anymore.
I read at least one comment about the trunk, and in the picture that doesn’t show the fireplace I agree, but when you see the whole room together I think it helps balance the dark hole of the fireplace. Also I feel like the zebra rug would help tie in those dark pops.
I like the changes you made over the mantel as well! Way better! Sometimes you just have to play with things and see them for a few hours or days, and eventually you just know if it’s right or not. And you pretty much always end up getting right as far as I’m concerned! Thanks for your blog, always inspiring!

  325. My eyes are looking for the curtains to reach the ceiling, and a more subtle curtain rod. Probably whitewashed wood. Or, painted to match the walls.

Roman shades would be great as long as they go to the ceiling.

Your home is lovely and I know you will find a perfect solution

  326. I prefer the finished look of a full rod and the drapery does soften the the room. I like our zebra rug but without seeing it, I’m not sure of it being a good fit for the room. You will know when you try it out.

  327. Sherry Tice Mitchell says:

Absolutely love the curtains! Softens the edges of the room. Love them.

    Sherry

  328. Donna Heinen says:

I always vote for curtains because of the softness they bring to a room. I like the rod all the way across, because it just looks like the curtains are pushed to one side.
Bring back the zebra rug there needs CV to be some more pattern.
    Just my 2 cents.
    Donna

  329. CHARLENE ANGUISH says:

I like the full curtain rod…maybe in a black too. Love the linen curtains but if you think they are too heavy for the summer you could always use sheers instead for a lighter look. Your room is beautiful and I’m confident you’ll figure it out just the way you want it.

  330. Theresa Benson says:

The large sunflower bouquet on the glass-front cabinet seems to bring everything visually to the right side of the room. Try switching the lamp and the bouquet OR setting that bouquet on the wicker trunk. I think it would warm the window without adding curtains.

  331. Cecilia from Georgia says:

Yvonne, your room is lovely. However, I agree that your curtains are taking the attention from the fireplace. It looks to me that having the rod stop in the middle looks unfinished. Personally, I feel not having any window treatments allows the eye to be drawn to the focal point of the room. Window treatments may not let the eye flow around the room easily. You have a lot of activity going on in that space and adding window treatments makes it even busier. I have Plantation Shutters on every window in my home except the wall of windows overlooking the back yard because I didn’t want anything to interfere with the view of my pool and gardens. My focal point in this same room is the fireplace and I am not happy with the brick so I am trying to get the courage to paint my fireplace! I know whatever you decide will be incredibly lovely. And if you grow tired of whatever you do, you can just change it! I won’t be able to change the brick once I paint it!! Good Luck!!

  332. Love them … they’re perfect ! As far as the zebra rug … don’t know ????

  333. Mary Ellen Berg says:

I do like the curtains and think they do soften the look in the room. I also like the rods across the room but I didn’t think I would before I saw your photo. What would you think about adding a neutral trim along the edge of the curtain?

  334. Paulette Beal says:

I like the rod going across the window. May I ask why you did not choose to use a valance? I have the same problem in my kitchen with no room on either side of the windows, but did not like the bare window look. I chose to use valances. Are they not on trend any longer?
    .

  335. If you want to hang the curtains, I like the whole rod. If you want softness just a valance would look nice. I also think Plantation shutters would look very nice on those windows.

  336. Since the blinds must stay, maybe consider a valance instead of the long drape to hide the pulled up shade. I think what you’re trying to would only work with a natural fiber shade (or no shade).

  337. Lady Suzane Myles says:

I have been looking at your great room curtains and I prefer the half rod, how would a tie back go in a colour similar to the timber furniture you have or a complimentary with something else in the room.

  338. Deanna Manley says:

I have the same issue with my windows. I added curtains and love them because they finish off the room, add some softness and dress up the windows. The only thing I did differently was to put a full rod over the window with one panel to the right side of each window. It looks more finished to me than the short rod. You may like the look better as well. I wish there was a way for me to post a pic of my windows so you can see what I mean.
I’ve followed your blog for years and your homes have always been beautiful to me. All the best!

  339. Joanna Miller says:

Love soft white curtains or even some with a little color. But definitely rods across the whole window? You have great taste!!

  340. Christine says:

First I would get rid of the rod, and use white rods that stretch across the whole window. Then I would use pocket rod curtains or grommets. Then I would use two panels, they can be on both sides of the window, or just on one side.

  341. nancie j tadgell says:

Beautiful room Yvonne and I like the short rod and curtain, but I feel the rod is a little too rustic looking, like plumbing parts put together. I am not fussy about the zebra rug. I try to imitate your style with every season. I appreciate that you asked our opinion. Thank you for all the inspiration!

  342. Tonya Schoepf says:

Like it better with the curtains and the rod across the entire window looks more balanced.

  343. This is such a lovely room, I also adore neutrals and you have decorated it beautifully. I like the longer rods. I don’t feel that it looks unfinished at all. I would like to suggest different rods. The silver colour feels jarring to me in this room. My first instinct is to try a darker rod and rings (not a thick rod) and make them a feature. I don’t think it will take away from the fireplace at all and may draw the eye in to the fireplace.

  344. Hi Yvonne. I’m a bit late getting my suggestion in but here goes. I would like to see a neutral
color rod go all the way across each window with sheer curtains covering the windows. The
curtains should reach to the floor
I always thought decorators prefer curtain rods be right above the window molding or right under
the ceiling. The position of the rods and their color are the most distracting features.
The zebra rug should come back in the fall. It’s a great accent!
I have always admired your decorating ideas. I look forward to many more.
    Phyllisa

  345. Hi Yvonne, Think about a single width semi-sheet shirr on (less volume) and forgive me, but move the wicker chest and replace it with a tree. The linen color is good. Good luck! Carol

  346. I have the same window problems. I miss the visual warmth of curtains but don’t need them for privacy. I struggle with the look and balance etc. I’m considering Roman shades…or matchstick ones. I prefer the pic monkey long curtain rod above to short one. It’s definitely a challenge to find the right window coverings!

  347. So much better with the rod going all the way across the window. I make custom draperies and that was my first thought! With that it looks like you just opened them up to the outside. With the short rods it looks like you didn’t have enough to cover the window.

  348. Carol Mann says:

I like the rods all the way across the window. No zebra rug and I would get rid of big basket near window. Seems out of place (but do love the basket)

  349. I love the draperies as you have them. The softness is on point and the color and rods are perfect.I love the room. Jean

  350. I like the rod across the window better than the tiny one but it still looks off to my eye. It’s intruding into your fireplace space. IMHO Roman blinds in a nice white fabric would be the answer. It would like your existing blinds, add softness and complete the look. Perhaps try that look on Pic Momkey
Your windows are pretty so why hide them?

    1. I should have said Roman Shades not Blinds.

  351. Roz Bradford says:

Extended rods are my pick. The problem seems to be the rod color. That’s the first place my eyes rest, on the rods, not the fireplace. Maybe white rods would keep the fireplace the focal point, not the metal rods. Don’t get me wrong, I love galvanized metal look but not in this space. Blessings!
    Roz

  352. Hi Yvonne,
I have a few suggestions for you:
    1) The window frames themselves lack hardscape architecture to compliment your fireplace makeover.  Because of the angle of the vaulted ceiling the wall looks very one dimensional.
    2) Add a textural roman style blind (the slats have a utilitarian look).
    3) Add more medium tones to the focal point wall (the percentage of white feels out of balance).
    4) when you look at the arial view of your furniture & decor items around the room… the fireplace wall needs to be more commanding.
I do want to say that your room is VERY beautiful, and these suggestions are what my eye sees. I know you wanted some constructive advice.
Hope this helps.  LOVE your blog!
You have inspired me over the years in so many ways.  Thank you!

  353. Marie Cosgrove says:

I don’t care for the way the curtain is at the moment. It looks like you tried to squish it in and instead of softening the area, it makes it look crowded and unnecessary. If you like the minimalist look, just leave the windows stand on their own and if it looks too sparse, lower the slats just a bit. I thought maybe a neutral pelmet just to cover the tops of the windows would work, too. Perhaps bring in the zebra rug and leave everything else unfussy!

  354. Pam Dratnol says:

I preferred no curtains. The view is too pretty to block and obviously it isn’t a privacy issue. But, if you are going to have curtains, then I would make them functional, so the rod all the way across makes sense. Everything you do is beautiful and your choice will be great. The zebra rug is a fun addition!

  355. Love your home but not the short rod. Perhaps no rods, no curtains. A fiddle leaf tree in the right corner would be beautiful. Instead of the rod, put up a substantial crown molding in that room and really highlight the details of the home! Love your blog!

  356. Sharon Millsap says:

My 2¢, if even worth that…Love your design as is – short rods and all. If you want to add a bit more texture/color/suttle drama, frame that wall with tan buffalo curtains and too the mantle shelf with tan colored wood.

  357. Yvonne, your room is beautiful as always, but my eye did go directly to the curtain rod….I like it much better all the way across.
I had a similar problem that might give you food for thought. My bay window is the focal point when you walk in my house, but I didn’t want a 10’ rod going across, nor a working curtain that cut into my seating area. So I used the old fashioned curtain rod that cost about $2.50 and hung double set of sheers as high as I could on either side of the window. The rods disappear. It gave the softness, but not the intrusion. It’s pretty with wooden Roman shades.

  358. Debbie McK says:

    Hi Yvonne,

Thank you, Yvonne, for your blog! I look forward to reading it each and every day!

I had a very similar experience with trying to style windows stuck in the corner. I tried the same thing, a single curtain on each window, short rods vs. extended rods and white curtains vs. colored curtains. After several tries and never feeling satisfied, I reached out to a friend who has a good eye for these things. She took a look at it and suggested I extend the rod and pull the curtain out of the corner as much as possible. I also have white walls, and I ultimately chose a light linen color to break up the white, kept the single curtain on each window and moved the curtain out of the corner a few inches (I chose to move it over the window slightly rather than alter the curtain width). Oh my, what a difference! I get so many compliments.

  359. The curtain rod needs to go all the way across! And yes to the zebra rug. I am missing the creams and whites from your old house.

  360. Do you have room for a sofa table behind your sofa? Also I would pick a darker color rod over the windows and a tree would be great in the room. Your home is lovely.

  361. Maureen Bonacchi says:

The curtain rods are what draws your eye up

  362. Don’t like the curtain rods, they look weird & don’t go with your beautiful room. Something about them throws the room off & draws the eye to the rod & rings, keep it without.

  363. Elizabeth says:

I really like the curtain rod crossing over the window much much better.

  364. I prefer the linen curtains with curtain rods as you installed. Lovely room. For summer I think I would leave zebra rug out – room has a very summer vibe as is

  365. Love your style, and whatever you decide will be beautiful. I’ve always thought that white plantation shutters would look gorgeous in your home. What about a wall to wall, built-in shelf over the fireplace and windwos?

    1. Agree with the plantation shutters. Will give the windows a cleaner look.

  366. I like the rod all the way across.

  367. I’m a bit late here, butI think the rods either way make the room look disconnected. I think a nice soft linen roman shade either pleated or unconstructed would look nice. You could even add a trim if need be. They can still be hung high above the window and they wouldn’t have to be operable but are long enough to conceal the blinds when pulled up behind them and only lower the blinds if needed.
Love your blogs and your style. Thank you for sharing your home.

  368. Eva SHARP says:

No I not really liking them with them just on the side of the window it like they have no purpose……but I not a expert. Also made your pizza casserole oh my I made with Italian sausage mushrooms spinach……oh very good this will be made again. And the bell pepper casserole was a hit as well be making that again .

    Thank You Eva

  369. Diane Troxell says:

Yes on the curtain rods – no on the zebra rug. Can you share where you got your whitewash looking wood lamps? You have a lovely home.

  370. For windows I think you need an inside mount shade of some sort with some bling or a ruffle, pleats, border, perhaps some animal print. It could be a simply animal print or some color with the other suggestions.

  371. No to the curtains. They just look out of place over to the side of that window. Whichever ones you choose they need to go across the entire window. Also, NO on the Zebra rug!

  372. Far be it for me to give you decorating advice, you are the expert! In my humble opinion I would ditch the curtains and go with woven blinds in a contrasting colour something in the shade of your wicker basket. Love your style!

  373. I like the wider rods better than the short ones, but still think they are prominent and draw attention away from the fireplace at the height they are hung- a line on the wall dividing the window and the ceiling. I would hang them the same height as the top of the window or, at least, with a rod that blends in more with the wall. I do love the curtains and think they add softness to the room and realize they would have to be altered to hang window height.

  374. Suzanne M Benner says:

What about a pleated shade valance…set up as high as your rod and long enough to cover the top of the window blind…may a soft gray and white mini stripe?

  375. Hi, Yvonne! I love your living room. Do you have a source that you can share with me for the sisal rug ? I appreciate your inspirational blog. Thank you!

  376. Terri Durnan says:

Yes, it looks better, more balanced, with the rod across the full window. Then it looks like you have the option of closing the curtains, even if you never do.

  377. I like the rod going all the way across—it tricks the eye into thinking you could pull the curtains all the way over if you wanted to. If you can extend the curtains over a little more it might help, too; but I don’t think it is fully necessary. You could play with it and see what looks most pleasing to you.

  378. JaneAnn Maitland says:

No to the curtains and rods. They are the first thing I see when looking at the room. Your room is beautiful and they detract from that beauty. They remind me of shower curtains. Since it’s not a privacy issue, I would let the windows uncovered. Or lower the blinds. If you want softness on window, you could use a swag or some such covering at the top of the window to break harshness. Also a large plant or tree in corner would soften area. Your home is beautiful!

  379. I don’t care for the look of the curtain hanging on that little rod. Have you though about using a valance? Just a thought!

  380. Shari Lathrop says:

I love your taste. Have you considered a simple valance or a cornice. I have wooden cornices in my living room with 2 inch-wide blinds. I love the clean look with the warm wood tone. You could repurpose a beautiful architectural element (maybe with a carved design in it or detailed moldings) to make your cornice, and give it a whitewash or chalk paint finish. I would then like to see a textured shade or blind to contrast a little with the room.

  381. First of all I love your website!!! Thank you for asking our opinion! I don’t like the rod across the whole window. Have you thought about Roman shades?

  382. I agree with the curtain rod across the window and I like the drapery on one side of the window. I think the issue is really the fireplace. It’s not standing out because it blends in with the wall. It seems to me it’s just floating there and needs to be grounded. I would play with some colour on the mantel or the whole fireplace using your software to get an idea. Also just a bolder piece of artwork over the fireplace might help. It could be the artwork itself or a bolder frame. Have fun! I can’t wait to see what you do. Your home always looks so lovely and well put together to me.

  383. Nancy Livermon says:

After reading lots of these comments, here is my opinion.
The short rods are very distracting. They draw my eyes away from your mantle focus point. The height of the rods seem off tome. I would use rods all the way across the windows, but up to the ceiling. I would slide the curtains to the one side, thus framing the fireplace. I would also suggest using soft beige linen panels. Not as dark as the burlap ones. I also think lowering your blinds might be interesting.
My favorite idea is the plantation shutters. But the curtains do offer some softness which is appealing.

Zebra rug. NO!! I would love to see it in your OFFICE!!!
Can’t wait to see what you decide. It’s a process. I am sure it will be gorgeous!

  384. Loved the drapes in stonegable dining room. I still look for it whenever I get to shop for fabric. Wonder how they would look like in family room.

  385. Margo Arnesen says:

Dilemma for sure. At first one of the pics showed the left window curtain rod not quite meeting the edge of the window and that bothered me. They look like a lot on the curtain side and nothing on the other side. Arugh. I guess I’d rather see the rod all the way across. Personally I think I’d nix all that and put in white shutters, the wooden type you push the bar up and down to open and close, but maybe that would make the room too dark? Well, I’m no help!!!! Sorry! Just thinking out loud here. But I know for certain I’d nix the zebra rug. Really never thought it went well with your decor. You’re so lucky! What a lovely home!!!

  386. Have you thought about a valance instead? Curtains are too heavy looking.

  387. Miss Char says:

Well Yvonne, ask four hundred people that love to decorate and you’ll probably get four hundred different answers.
My answer is I think you’ve hit the perfect balance. I would leave the curtains up and continue to use the short rods. It frames that whole wall.

    1. Deb Miller says:

I agree, you have the perfect balance just as you have it now! The linen is light and airy. No valance.

  388. Julie Merrill says:

I like the curtains. It does add softness and I think a pretty full length light toned rod vs the shorter would be the way I would go. There are so many pretty finials available. I personally would add them if only to the end nearest fireplace. It would accent not detract IMO!

  389. The room is beautiful! I love your decorating style. I had a similar issue in our family room, and went with a very sheer valence across the top of the windows. It added a little something without overpowering our fireplace.

  390. Deb Miller says:

Keep the white linen curtains with the rods just as you have them. Perfect!!!

  391. I absolutely love this room exactly as is! I love the curtain and rod. I feel it softens the room. I wouldn’t add the zebra rug. This room is gorgeous!

  392. Joyce Cormier says:

I love, LOVE everything about this room and I like the shorter rod and curtains you chose. For me, it seems to frame the room. I want, no, NEED the tiered side table. If you have a link you could share on where you found it I would be over the moon grateful. Beautiful room, beautiful home!!!

  393. Hi Yvonne, My windows and fireplace are very similar to yours. I did sheers floor to ceiling on both sides of the windows. …and yes the window treatments are right next to the fireplace. I have gotten many compliments on them.

  394. Sharlotte says:

First of all…I absolutely LOVE your decorating style.
Just my opinion…and because I prefer symmetry…I really like the curtains with the smaller rod. It adds such softness to the room, and I would also add panels to the other side as well. I think it might make your windows appear larger as well.

  395. Have you thought of covering the full length rod with a cornice? The cornice would cover the rod, which seems to stick out to me. The curtains are fabulous. The cornice could be easily made and paint the color of the walls to minimize them or covered with a textured fabric that is very light colored. I personally would love the option of drawing the drapes in the evening

  396. Tammy Ringeisen says:

Beautiful room! I am a fan of the curtain panels pulled to the side wall as in the pictures. I never understood the short curtain rod, just doesn’t make sense. I would have a full curtain rod with the light panels. Seen privacy is not an issue, the panels frame the window and the room and adds a finishing touch! Very pretty!

  397. What about a simple, cloth covered cornice board in the same color family as the walls or trim to add soft “fabric at the window” and cover the blinds when not in use but leave the window open for light and view.

  398. The curtain color and fabric are great. But I feel it looks odd with just one side hung. You should try a curtain on burn sides even if you reduce the fullness. The neutral curtains do not distract from your desired focal points.

  399. I would also make the curtains open and close with high rods. You could maybe choose lighter toned rods.

  400. First, let me say that you have excellent taste! I love how you pull things together in the homes you have lived in, plus all the decorating tips you post. However, I don’t like the look of the short rod on the window…it’s distracting and looks too contemporary for the room. I would either go for a simple cornice board across the top or plantation shutters. I know you think shutters would close in the room, but you could use the wider planks and keep them open all the time to allow the light in. I know whatever you decide will look amazing because YOU are the best! Again, thanks for all the beautiful pictures you post and you decorating tips.

  401. I was just reading this post. What about having a tailored box pleated valance rather than a drape. It would soften the window, hide the stacked shade and still look simple and classic. Or if you have a curtain, have something more sheer that you would pull across the window and then swag it back on the sides with a tasteful holder. I’m not a fan of either the short rod or the rod going across empty unless you plan to close the drape.

  402. Hi Yvonne,
OMG you must hv 500 comments lol. How do you do this? I wd say for myself if I didn’t really want the curtains to be a focal point I wd just sew the top of the curtain to mk a pocket and hide your jewelry aka your curtain rod. That’s what makes you notice them. Easy fix lol. Good luck. Whatever you decide will be beautiful. You know what you love and you hv a wonderful eye.
    Janet

I’d like to copy your idea of the short drapery rod – can you tell me where you got that? And I’m going to use your DIY curtain instructions. Thank you – follow you everyday.
