WHITE CHRISTMAS TREE

A Christmas tree is a beautiful focal point of any room during the holidays! No matter the size of the decorations Christmas trees add beautiful magic to our homes. This year I have three Christmas trees at the Tanglewood House and I thought you might like to see how I decorated each one.

Every year I start my Christmas decorating by putting a wreath on my front door and putting up our Christmas tree! But planning for our tree(s) happens way before the Christmas tree comes up from the basement.

HOW I PLAN FOR CHRISTMAS TREE DECOR

For me, it’s important to plan a few things before I start to decorate my tree.

I decide on a color palette and theme for Christmas decorations so all my Christmas decor will look cohesive!

HERE’S MY CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATING STRATEGY

Do you love Christmas trees? See three different Christmas trees decorated three different ways. Lots of inspiration and ideas to use when you decorate your Christmas tree!

I follow a system, of sorts, to decorate all my trees.

This year my colors were lots of whites, metallics, and a touch of green. And the theme of the decor was anything snowy and little trees.

I have a nice collection of decorative Christmas trees and they played a big part in our home’s overall Christmas decor. So my big tree was like the great lady of all the trees I displayed!

You can see my Christmas Tour HERE.

Here’s how I decorate a tree…

  1. After the tree is put up (if faux) fluff ever branch and position it where you want it to go.
  2. Add any extra speciality light to a tree.
  3. Add the star or any tree topper to the tree.
  4. Next hang the heaviest and longest ornaments on the tree.
  5. Then add the medium size ornaments to the tree.
  6. And hand the small ornaments or special ornaments last to the tree.
  7. If using ribbon to decorate the tree, do that now.
  8. Add any stems, picks, berries or other items that get stuck into the tree.
  9. Vacuum and add a skirt or fabric or collar to the tree.
  10. Enjoy!

And here’s one thing to remember when styling the prettiest trees… hang some ornaments on the inside branches of the tree, some ornaments midway on a branch, and some ornaments at the ends of the branches.

I follow these same steps for every Christmas tree I’m decorating!

THE LIVING ROOM TREE

The living room tree easily slipped right into the snowy Christmas theme this year! Our tree is a new tree and the smallest tree we have had at Tanglewood.

I think this tree suits our home best because it gives us lots of room to move around it. I’ve wanted a snowy tree for a very long time and this tree is covered in a blizzard!

And because our home is open we can see the tree from the dining area and kitchen. So I decorate every inch of our tree… no cheating and leaving the back bare!

I’m very fond of metallics at Christmas so I have bins of silver and gold and bronze and burnished ornaments I’ve collected over decades.

And I have lots of white ornaments that look like snowballs on all the green trees we’ve had before.

I really haven’t purchased more than a handful of Christmas ornaments this year! I stockpiled quite a hoard of different Christmas ornaments in mostly metallic colors.

I do have some green and red ornaments for our trees… maybe next year!

On this tree, I added some pretty larger pinecones in sparkly white and burnished gold with lots of glitter! I love ornaments that are long! They bring a nice balance to all the round ones I have.

I also had small-ish pinecones in pretty metallics for the tree too!

Don’t you love trees decked out with beautiful billowy ribbon? I do too! I had planned to drape and billow ribbon down this tree, but once I got all the ornaments on it I decided to tie gold and silver jingle bells to it with black and off-white ribbon instead. I just didn’t think it needed ribbon.

The only green thing on this tree is the fuzzy throw that is wrapped around the bottom of it that the white gifts sit on!

THE BEDROOM TREE

This is the first year we’ve had a Christmas tree in our Tanglewood bedroom.

You can see it in our bedroom and take a Cozy Christmas Tour here.

The bedroom tree is only 5 feet tall and thin and like the tree in our living room, it is very snowy!

I followed the same 10 steps to decorate this tree but it was a little easier! The bedroom tree has many of the same ornaments as on the living room tree! I used jingle bells in this tree too with white ribbons with stars.

I found big sparkly stars and added them to the tree here and there. And used groups of burnished leaves to stick into the tree!

Unlike the living room tree, I did decorate the bedroom tree with beautiful ribbon I found here. Oh, I LOVE the ribbons and faux flowers on this site! Gorgeous!

Not bad for a tree made with “leftovers” except for the ribbon!

I found a floppy basket in the basement to put the tree in and gold willow balls to fill the basket.

A simple starburst dons the top of the tree!

We light the tree every evening and it looks so pretty in our room as we fall asleep!

THE SUN ROOM TREE

I’ve had this tabletop tree for several years and every year I decorate it a bit differently!

This year the tree in the sunroom did not follow the theme or color palette as the rest of our Christmas home.

I found this pretty green and gold plaid ribbon in my ribbon stash and was so inspired by it I decided to decorate the tabletop tree with it. And I decorated the tree with a green/white/gold and silver color palette.

And instead of putting this small tree on a table, I put it on an upholstered bench with a gold and white cushion.

A tabletop tree is so easy and fast to decorate because it is small!

I made a topper out of bit and bobs from a box of green-ish florals. It really pays to save things like that! And I used the same florals to add to the rest of the tree.

Instead of tucking the loopy ribbons into the tree at the bottom, I cut the ends of the ribbon into French dovetails and let them artistically hang free! Do you like the look?

This base of the tree fits perfectly in one of my many baskets!

I hope you have enjoyed seeing the three Christmas trees in our home this holiday and have gotten some ideas for your trees this or next year!

  1. I love your gold star on the living room tree! Can you source that please?

If there’s any clearance items left after this season, I’m stocking up on picks…I like the way they fill out the tree so that you can’t see the wire stem and branches in the middle. My favorite is the seeded eucalyptus.

It’s probably not “in style”, but I use smaller ornaments, since my tree is small and they are a mix of different boxes I’ve bought throughout our married life…almost every one has some kind of sentimental value. I open each box and put one high, one low, one front, one back. That way, they are scattered somewhat throughout the tree. I did embrace the ribbon threading this year! Next tree won’t be pre-lit, unless I buy higher end so I won’t have the ONE bulb that makes the entire bottom half of the tree go dark!

    1. Carol, Oh, there is nothing prettier than a tree with family ornaments! Your tree sounds so beautiful.

Your tree is beautiful! What size is it? Is it slim? I too also moved into an open floorplan that is smaller than my old home and I am looking for a new tree
