Hiding God’s Word In Your Heart

Memorizing Scripture or hiding God's word in your heart is one of the most important things we can do. See why we should memorize scripture and how it helps us in our lives.

Have you made any New Year’s resolutions yet? I’m not much of a resolution maker but this year my number one resolution is to develop a discipline to memorize God’s word.

Do you have a good memory? Or are you like me? I have so many things I am thinking of all at one time once in a while I’ll forget something. Today let’s talk about one thing worth using your brain’s bandwidth to remember!

IT’S NEVER TO LATE TO START

I so wish I had spent my whole life memorizing Scripture. But because I became a Christian at 33 I feel as though I missed out on a whole lot of learning God’s word. It’s not as easy for me now to memorize God’s word as it was for my children when they were little.

But I’m sure God would tell me that it is NEVER too late to start!

It’s never too late for any of us to start! I know because John 15 tells us that the Holy Spirit is our teacher! And with a teacher like that, we all can memorize scripture no matter our age! I believe that with my whole heart!

MY PLAN

So I’m trying to learn one scripture a week. Do you need to commit to memorizing God’s Word like me? I have the perfect verse for you! And in one year I hope (and pray) to have at least 52 new Scripture verses to call up from my memory when I need them!

WHAT GOD SAYS ABOUT MEMORIZING SCRIPTURE

God’s word says…

I HAVE HIDDEN YOUR WORD IN MY HEART, THAT I MIGHT NOT SIN AGAINST YOU. PSALM 119:11

This is a beautiful and rich scripture!

That’s a wonderful scripture to learn this week! The ancients believed that the “heart” was the center of life in our bodies. It held our mind, will, emotion, intellect, character… the inner man so to speak.

The word “hidden” means to treasure up or store. It’s the idea of hiding treasure safely in a secret place.

Now here’s something beautiful! The word “word” in Ps 119:11 means God’s very spoken word. His commandment. You are able according to God to actually store up His spoken word like the treasure inside of you! WOW! God’s word is full of power! Amazing, miraculous power! His word will actually work inside you if you let it!

HOW GOD’S WORD HELPS US

The bible goes on to say that we hide God’s very spoken words inside of us so we might not “sin”, or rebel, against Him. You see, our hearts, our mind, will, emotion, intellect, character, if left to go it’s own way without restraint or teaching will ALWAYS rebel against God all the time!

In a world of relative truths and multiple truths and half-truths, God’s word IS truth! It is so important for us as we walk through life to know TRUTH.

As we walk through life we are constantly bombarded with information and it will and does shape what we believe and how we live.

Hiding God’s word in our hearts is like a plumbline. All other truths can be lined up against it to be sure what we are seeing and hearing and taking in is true.

AN EARTHY EXAMPLE OF A BIBLICAL TRUTH

A plumbline is a string with a heavy weight, or plummet, on the bottom of it. When it is hung- let’s say against a wall- you can see if the corners of the walls and windows are perfectly straight or plumb. This is vastly important. Without knowing “plumb” our homes would be all wonky and would not be sound!

When Bobby and I hang wallpaper we make a plumbline. We make a straight line on the wall using an electronic plumbline. It is so so important that we put that first piece of wallpaper on the wall with the edge up against the plumbline. Then we know it and the rest of the wallpaper we hang will be straight and look pretty! If we don’t get a true plumbline then everything will be off!

And so it is with life!

KEEP MEMORIZING

God’s word is that all-important plumbline, my friend. Everything we think, see, hear should be plummed by scripture!

God’s word in our hearts is like a constant reminder and a guard against sinning and lies!

It is the Holy Spirit that will bring our stored scripture to our minds when we need it. We just need to obey it!

Oh, the marvelous work and love of God.

Now, let’s do our part and hide the word of God in our hearts. Why don’t we memorize Psalm 119:11 this week?

“I HAVE HIDDEN YOUR WORD IN MY HEART, THAT I MIGHT NOT SIN AGAINST YOU”

Let’s hide this scripture in our hearts together in the New Year!

Same here! I am working on this week’s verse now, I’d love a group effort – learning the same verse “together”!

  8. Just what I have been looking for to do differently in 2023. Please share your scripture each week. It is a good place to start, and we do have the choice of picking our own. But it would be powerful to have a large group of ladies (assume mostly ladies) who will be memorizing the same words together.

  9. I will do this along with you and others. I have a blank notebook ready for scripture. Thank you for doing this. And yes, please post weekly with the new scripture.
