I’m writing this as much for me as for you! Let’s chat about how to create a healthy nighttime routine that will set you up for a great night’s sleep and a productive day! I’m doubling my efforts to follow these simple ideas that are all the best practices for being healthy and successful!

There are many evenings I fall into bed exhausted after a long day of work or just too much late night tv watching. And there are lots of mornings I get up at 3:00 am and can’t fall back to sleep! Not good! So, I’m changing my and creating a healthy nighttime routine! Here are 8 things I’m doing every night before I go to bed!

Here are some smart things to do before you go to bed!

Send just a few minutes tidying up the downstairs before bed. Put everything back in place. Fluff the pillows, clean off table surfaces, put away magazines and books. Put all things that need to go upstairs in a laundry basket and carry them up with you when you go to bed!

It’s so nice to come down to a tidy home the next am!

calendar and computer to help create a nighttime routine

Take a look at your schedule for the following day. Make a list of the top 3 things to get done! Note all scheduled appointments.

I really needed to start reviewing my next day the evening before! Then I don’t feel like I’m forgetting something! This is such a great idea! It gives me peace of mind that I have a handle on all my appointments for the next day.

I usually check the calendar on my phone after dinner.

laundry basket

Sort 1 load of laundry and put it by your bedroom door. In the morning take it with you when you go to get a cup of coffee or tea! Throw that load in on your way to the kitchen! When I consistently do this I have no laundry pile up! And I love the feeling of a closet of clean ready to wear clothes!

Here’s another thing I do at night, but I did not put it on the list. I like to fold clothes and put them away so my laundry baskets are empty.

This works great when Bobby and I settle for a movie or tv show after dinner!

clean sink is one of the nightly routines that we all should do

My biggest pet peeve is facing dirty dishes in the sink from the night before. Or cold dishwater, YUCK! Even worse!

Make a point to clean your sink with a fabulous smelling organic cleanser every evening and you will be happy to meet your sink the next am!

Here’s a recipe for a wonderful smelling organic sink cleanser! I found this recipe on CLEAN MAMA. You will love this site!

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 10 drops lemon essential oil (or any other essential oil)
  • 10 drops “purification” essential oil (or any other essential oil)
  • Castile Soap
  • shaker top jar.

Combine the baking soda and essential oils. Put the scrub in a mason jar. Instead of a lid cut out a piece of cardstock to fit as a lid and punch 4 holes in the top. Sprinkle the scrub in the sink along with a tiny squirt of Castile soap or dish detergent and scrub it with a sink scrubber. Rinse well. Your sink will be clean and fresh smelling. And so will your kitchen!

fluffy towels

Brush your teeth, floss, wash and hydrate your face. Use lotion on your body and pay attention to your hands, neck, and feet.

Go to bed feeling pampered and smelling pretty. Spray your bed pillow with a little lavender spray for sweet dreams!

I also like to diffuse essential oils in my bedroom at night. I’ve been loving geranium and orange or lavender and just a drop of spearmint.

Don’t forget to take care of the inside of your body too! Take nightly meds and any vitamins or supplements that work better at night. Make taking your vitamins at the same time part of your nighttime routine! Maybe before you brush your teeth.

I take my multivitamins at night because they are a little too rough on my stomach in the morning.

Reading is one part of my nighttime routine I really look forward to. I just pick up my book or magazine where I left off the night before!

Try to unplug from all electronic devices though. The light in them stimulates the brain and can disturb your sleep.

Save your magazines till bedtime!

Reading is my favorite way to unwind! Even if it is just a few minutes try to read something before bed!

Don’t forget to be thankful for the day and talk to your Father in heaven before you go to bed! Praying brings me such peace!

I bet there is something you do every night before you go to bed that might not be on the nighttime routine list… please share! Why don’t you join in the effort to set up a nightly routine that is healthy and smart!

  1. Such a great reminder! Like you, I always sort a load of laundry at night to start in the morning. It makes me anxious when laundry piles up!

  2. Too funny, Yvonne to see your bedroom. I have the same comforter, use a white summer quilt and even have a look alike cat. Her name is Penny and our bed is one of her favorite places to cuddle up. But she also stands up straight like yours as if to let everyone know that she is lady of the house.

  3. I make your recipe for the sink cleanser and have found that the green top from a container of parmesan cheese fits perfectly on the canning jar and works great for shaking the cleaner into the sink.

  4. I already do many of your suggestions,I am such a creature of habit. My house always has to be in order before I go to bed.

  5. Hi Yvonne, Love spending time with you and a cup of coffee in the morning.
Could you tell me where I can get your pretty bed quilt? Love the color..?

  6. I love all of these and agree! I have done many of these and some I am going to try. I love to wake up and go in the kitchen and have everything clean and put away, feels good!
I love your blog and have been following for years and appreciate your gifts!
Have a beautiful blessed day and keep on doing what you do so awesomely!

    1. Hi Yvonne,
      Love your list..
a few more with families with younger children that helped our family..
1.laying out clothes for the next day can be helpful.
lunches all packed for everyone going to work & school-before bed..
      place all of the
pack backs ready at the front door after homework is completed ..
      4. car keys always in the same place every night for easy mornings
departures.. 5. If needed where you live we also lay out coats, gloves etc.. with each persons pack back.
      My question …
with the sink cleanser is they are certain amount you recommended to sprinkle in the sink?
      Thanks for being you! 😃

    1. Thanks Yvonne for the reminders about good night time habits. One I always do is make sure my coffee is set to start at 6am so it is waiting for me when I get up. This just makes my morning go a bit smoother.
? How do you avoid cat hair on your beautiful bedspread. We have a cats and 2 dogs and I love them madly, but removing pet hair from the floor and furniture is constant job.

  7. Hi Yvonne,
I love your idea about using a homemade, nontoxic cleaner for your sink. Did you know you can use the top from a canister of parmesan cheese on a Mason jar? Sprinkle sprinkle…:)

  8. Thanks, Yvonne, for sharing your night time routine with us. I always enjoy your posts! Bless you for being so special!

  9. Hey Yvonne….after reading this post I remembered a couple or three years back you were having issues with your foot and it required surgery. Was just wondering how you are doing now? Hope the surgery helped and you are able to really be mobile again. Always look forward to your email each morning.

  10. Would you share with me the blue quilt with the little balls that you have on your bed? I have previously purchased the bedskirt after seeing it on your site! I ADORE your home and your faith!

  11. These are wonderful ideas and thank you for sharing your beautiful home. I Love Hobbs. My cousin had a foot surgery that didn’t cross the healing finish line, problem; she was rejecting the titanium that was put in her foot, which was removed, and she is perfectly healed !
Our God can cause hidden things to be revealed!

  12. Yvonne, your night routine is fulsome! Here is a little prayer I absolutely love before closing my eyes.

    Dear Lord,
Relax the tension of my body,
Calm the restlessness of my mind
Still the thoughts which worry and perplex me
Help me to rest myself and all my worries in your strong and loving arms
Let your Spirit speak to my
mind and heart while I am asleep so that in the morning I may find that I have received in the night
    Light for my way
    Strength for my tasks
    Peace for my worries
    Forgiveness for my sins
Grant me sleep tons and tomorrow the power to live in your grace.

    God bless from Barrie, Ontario

Last night I didn’t think it would work but I didn’t give up and yes I slept like a baby!!! the thing is if it doesn’t work the first time keep it up it will happen……….Sleep like a baby
