EASY OUTDOOR DINING-Setting an easy table with PLASTICWARE!!!!

Summer is the time to eat outside! And here at StoneGable, we have been blessed with such perfect summer weather. So, we are enjoying every drop of this unusual summer and eating outside is an evening ritual for us! Although I still love to set an outdoor table with pretty “real” dinnerware, most evening we like to pull out the great plasticware I’ve collected and use it! Come on outside and join us on the patio for a red and white tablescape… farmhouse style!

Today is IT’S ALL SET! Join me and my fabulous blogging friends for lots of tablescaping inspiration! Find the link to the other amazing tables at the bottom of this post!

This year, our property is surrounded on 3 sides by corn. The whole back yard is hugged by tall wall of corn! It makes our yard feel cozy and secluded. So different than our usual farmland vistas!

We finally found an outdoor dining table that suited our patio.  The wind here can really whip across the farm fields. Winds have been so strong we’ve had a couple chairs and tables blow away.

I’ve been looking for two years for an outdoor dining set I loved and that would be tough enough to stand up to our outdoor weather! Finally, I found one I loved from Hayneedle. This weathered looking “wood” is really Polywood. Made from recycled materials. It won’t fade or chip or splinter. I can keep this set out in the elements all year long! Just what I was looking for.

Now, I would love the round table too… to put at a curved part of my patio. Just perfect for me and Bobby!

Click HERE to see the details. The table and chairs were an investment. I don’t plan on replacing them!

Can you believe the table is set with plasticware? Plates, bowls, drinking glasses, wine glasses, and flatware?

I’m using my go-to water hyacinth placemats. I’ve had these for years and they have held up so so well! If they get wet no problem!!!! I love their nubby texture, don’t you?

Each place is set with a square, white melamine (plasticware) plate…

and these darling red bowls with white stars. They are melamine too! I like to use small bowls for salads and desserts!

The red and white flatware rest on a red bandana napkin. Bandanas are amazing napkins! They are inexpensive, casual and F-U-N! And they lend themselves to a farmhouse look!

I keep a red caddy full of red and white handled flatware and any of my red, white or blue cloth napkins and bandanas. So easy to bring the caddy to the table and set it from there.

I like to keep the colors in the tablescapes I create rather “tight”.  Limiting the colors of this tablescape keeps it simple, fresh and summery!

Can you find the white barn in the background of the image below? We can see farms on all sides of StoneGable. They are such a pretty site!

Yes, these drinking and wine glasses are all acrylic (plastic)! No shattered glass at this dinner! I must admit I am a bit of a glass snob! I love real glass, but these acrylic glasses are so fabulous that they get my A-okay!

Two lanterns and four milk bottles of garden flowers grace the center of the table.

The lanterns look amazing lit in the evening and lend a sparkle to our al fresco dining ambiance!

The center of the table is dotted with small white milk bottles filled with red and white flowers from the garden.

I’ll light the candles in the lanterns and crank up the music at dusk! And we will eat dinner among the fireflies!

This post contains affilliate links.

  1. Eating outdoors is always magical, it totally changes a meal, it becomes instantly more relaxed and always just a little more special. Your summer is unusually perfect and ours is unusually imperfect! Normally we are blessed with long hot days but no humidity from May through September, this year we get hot spells and then it turns chilly, it just cannot seem to settle into a summer routine this year here in SW France. Still we are eating outdoors, sometimes with jackets in the evening, but making the most of it!

  2. Your tablescape is beautiful, Yvonne! Thanks so much for the inspiration. Love it all and your new table is so nice….looks very practical for outdoor living and gorgeous as well. I love melamine dinnerware. It is lightweight and fun to mix and match! Great idea to use the bandannas for napkins. Enjoy!!

  3. I too have always been a glass snob. However I showed the Mr. a beautifully set table in a showroom that was completely done in acrylic.
    Such an idyllic setting .
    happy midweek.
    Hugs, Gee

  4. I just love your tablescapes, they’re are always so inviting and cozy! I could sit there for hours. What a beautiful place where you live, and I love your new patio table & chairs. Using acrylic/plastic outdoors just makes good sense, and the plastic goods we can find today are just as beautiful as glass or ceramic, if you look in the right places! Enjoy your summer!

  5. Love your new table and the design on the chair backs!! I noticed all the beautiful melamine dinnerware in the stores this year. A blast from the past 🙂 It has been very hot and humid here in Michigan this summer, so we are unfortunately spending most of our time inside with the AC on. Beautiful tablescape as always!

  6. Gorgeous table and how great that it’s all plastic. I thnk that would be especially important for people who have pools and don’t want any broken glass near it. I love the red napkins and those pretty placemats. We try to eat outside as much as possible in the summer. Enjoy the rest of your week!

      1. Awe thank you. I love your posts. I look at them daily to use your magnificent ideas in my new Lakehouse and screened in porch. Thank you so much.

  7. I love the red & white against the cornfield backdrop, Yvonne – a perfect farmhouse combination. Your tableware is perfect. Plastic sure has come a long way, hasn’t it?!

  8. I love it all, Yvonne! Your tables are always so beautiful and inviting — I’m ready to pull up a chair and look at your beautiful vistas (and corn fields) all day! All that corn reminds me of my grandparents house in northern Minnesota. They were surrounded by it too — so wonderful! 🙂

  9. What a gorgeous yard setting for your lovely table setting! I cannot believe it’s all plasticware. It looks amazing!! I think the placemats and the bandana napkins help make it look way more elegant than one would expect from plastic, but they really are quite nice on their own. Fabulous job! I can see why your patio beckons you to eat outside so often… 🙂

  10. It all looks lovely, Yvonne, and I especially love the textured placemats. I am drawn to blues/aquas and browns as that blends with my indoor decor. I’ve lived in many parts of Southern Ontario and it seems that no matter where I live, when I set my outdoor table (I LOVE setting tables!) a gust of wind comes along and my plasticware goes flying! Do you ever encounter this annoying problem?

    1. I know what you mean. If it’s a little breezy I set up a buffet on my island and the plates come out filled with food. Enough to weigh them down. Hope this helps. Always have a plan B!

  11. Lovely table setting and the new furniture is very nice. Plastic ware has come a long way and yours is so pretty. Could you show us a picture of your vegetable and flower gardens again this year? Last year it was so lush and beautiful!

  12. Yvonne,
Beautiful “all plastic” red and white farmhouse tablescape, dear friend!
Totally inspiring for a vintage find wicker picnic basket purchased last week!
    Thank you for sharing!

  13. Beautiful as always! i love the drink dispenser! i didn’t see a link for it. Where did you purchase? I love love love your blog! : )

    1. Cathy, thanks so much for your sweet sweet comment. I don’t have a drink dispenser in this post. Are you talking about the blue and white one in the other about plasticware? That was from The Pottery Barn about 5 years ago and I can’t find it there anywhere. So sorry!

  14. Love this, Yvonne! I especially like your listing and links at the end which helps all of us to follow your ideas! Thanks for including them.

  15. Such a beautiful tablescape, Yvonne! I love the red and white and the fact that it’s plastic. To me that means you can eat outside (no worry of breaking dishes on the way out or in) and you can reuse them. Perfect combination.

  16. You never cease to amaze me …. it’s just so much fun and makes me smile . Such a sweet country summer setting. I’ve managed to collect red and white plastic tableware along with some enamel ware and galvanized trays for my outdoor table setting and now after seeing this post I have some great ideas on how to add the “little extras” to tie it all together.

  17. Such an outdoor beautiful setting, how inviting and from all your fabulous recipes the food will be even better

  18. I love all of the new designs for plastic ware. It makes outdoor entertaining so much easier and loads more fun.

  19. LOVE this !! Your placemats… I really like the size of them, could you give us the dimensions? Seems large enough to even add your drinking glass to it.
