We are going to be chatting about DECORATING WITH TRAYS! Yes, trays are very exciting!
Let’s use trays as more than trays. The definition of trays goes far beyond what we would normally think of as trays. How about wooden crates, round low baskets, acrylic boxes, silver plates with interesting edges, and even a great cutting board! When we broaden our horizons and think about using other flat surfaces to corral a vignette or contain something then trays can get pretty exciting to decorate with!
Why Use A Tray
Learning to use trays to make gorgeous vignettes takes a flat surface from boring to beautiful! Trays corral items and let them tell a little collected story. Trays are boundaries for objects that would look cluttered if not put in a tray. Trays are like magic!
Grab A Tray
Let’s begin with something you have in your home that resembles a tray. Round, square, rectangle, wicker, metal, glass. Just grab one.
A tray is the basis for so many beautiful arrangement and vignettes.
I have a collection of them in the basement. Most are some kind of wicker but I do have some metal trays, an acrylic tray and a white lacquered tray I’m very partial to.
I bet you have a few too! Trays are one of your most reasonable and essential home decor items.
Think About Texture
Texture plays a big part in creating interest and beauty in our homes. Texture can be bumpy, rough, smooth, shiny, dull, nubby and more.
Choosing a tray that adds to the overall texture of the vignette is important.

Choose 5 Items
Decorating with trays on a coffee table or other flat surface usually means creating a vignette in it. A vignette is a grouping of objects that are interesting or tell a story or share visual information about the person who put it together.

Here are the most common items in a vignette…
- candleholder and candle or lantern
- small decorative box or bowl
- a book
- something organic like moss balls
And here are a few more items you might like to use in a vignette in a basket…
- object d’ art
- seasonal object
- a small picture or frame
- something that supports the theme of your vignette
The goal is to use items that look beautiful in a tray or basket. So choose a basket that looks pretty with the decor you select to go in it.
