CREATING A BEAUTIFUL FALL BED AND A GIVEAWAY

I’m so excited to show you how I create a beautiful fall bed for my master bedroom! I think a bed should change with the seasons not only because it is the biggest piece of furniture in our bedrooms and should be thought of as a major decor element but also because our bedding needs often change from season to season. Today you get a tiny sneak peek at one part of my master bedroom and how I’m sleeping in pretty comfort all fall long!

Our bedroom is almost complete. I’m just waiting on a couple of custom extras before the big reveal. And what better time of year to show off bedding. Fall is my favorite!

Here in Pa, we are a four season home.  We get all kinds of weather. And I must say I am so excited for cooler nights! Did you know that our summers can be as sweltering as Florida? Yup! And as humid too!

But this time of year our evenings start to cool down and not very long from now I’ll be sleeping without the AC and opening up the windows to cool breezes. So my bedding needs to reflect those changes.

Here’s our queen size bed. The old bed was actually on the opposing wall for 24 years and since the hardwood flooring was installed in our room we moved the bed! And love it!

I adore what I call mix and match bedding. I love picking and choosing different pieces and putting them together. I think, like most decor, creating a curated look is best. Yes, even in bedding!

All the beds in my home are topped with a tray, basket or bed tray with legs! For the master bedroom, I chose a gray-tone oval basket to hold a couple books, a cup of coffee, a tiny vase of blooms or leaves, my reading glasses or even a few pretty velvet pumpkins and a scattering of acorns.

Gotta love those gorgeous velvet pumpkins!

I think the most important layer of bedding is the one that touches our skin every night! You probably know we spend up to one-third of our lives sleeping. So the sheets we use are so important!

And I think it is sooooo important to lay on and cover up with the most beautiful, best quality and durable sheets we can afford. That’s why I choose linen sheets most of the time.

I LOVE the quality and beauty and long life of Saphyr Pure Linen sheets! They durable, have antibacterial properties, are hypoallergenic, and gets better the more they are laundered.

The longer I have them the better and softer they become. Not all linen sheets are the same! I have had other linen sheets that don’t compare! Trust me on this!!!!

For my fall bed, I chose soft washed pure linen sheets in SIMPLY NATURAL. Gorgeous and lofty! Don’t you love the double raw edge that is a stunning embellishment!

Some people think linen sheets are only for warm weather. They are mistaken! Linen sheets are for warm weather but for any other season too! They keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter because they are breathable!

The next layer on my bed is a thin quilt that acts as a blanket. I’m not a huge fan of blankets (unless they are linen) so I opt for a thin quilt. Even on the coldest nights linen sheets, a thin quilt and a duvet work fine!

Here’s the important thing to remember… it’s all about layering! Thin layers. Thick blankets and other bulky bedding get very heavy and cumbersome! So think thin. I’d rather have several light layers than one heavy one!

Our top layer is a white duvet with a very light down insert. When the weather becomes cold we will add a heavier down duvet, but not too heavy! I hate that weighted-down-by-my-covers feeling!

As you know, I LOVE white! Always have and I love a white duvet. When Beau comes to visit he often sleeps with us so I’ll throw a malaise coverlet over the duvet cover to protect it.

I’m such a “gold” girl. I’ve used this long lumbar pillow on the living room sofa this summer and now it’s on my bed. The settee against the far wall has this pretty vibrant gold running through the fabric.

This pillow adds a nice pop of color to an otherwise neutral room!

Your bedding should change with the season no matter where you live!

Here are things to think about…

  • quality linen sheets
  • light layers
  • pillows that work with your preferred sleep position
  • mix and match bedding for a curated look
  • pretty accent pillows you love
  • fun bed tray

Keep an eye out for the final reveal of the entire master bedroom and adjacent sitting room. And I can’t wait to share what is going above (literally) the bed!

Also, I’ll have a post soon with all the sources to everything in the master bedroom.

Do you have a tip about bedding as the weather gets cooler? We’d love to hear…

Those linen sheets are beautiful and your fall tray is a great accent for the lovely room. I “invested” in Restoration Hardware linen sheets a few years back and was VERY disappointed when they literally washed away and I had holes in the fitted sheet after a few months. I’m a bit timid to again spend good money that will literally go down the washer or dryer drain, but trying out the Saphyr Pure bedding won in your drawing would be an awesome second try. The light blue is such a relaxing color and I love the fringed edges.
Also love your open weave skirt and hope to learn about it soon.

    1. So sorry you had such a bad experience! Saphyr sheets get better as you wash them.

  2. KRISTYN A LEFEBVRE says:

Those linen sheets are absolutely gorgeous!

  3. Thank you for this post. I learned a lot about linen bedding. Never knew linen was hypoallergenic and good for sensitive skin. Are you sure it is soft? Would love to feel the fabric prior to making an investment in these sheets.

  4. The Soft Washed Pure Linen Duvet Cover in white would be lovely on my bed!

  5. I learned that these linen sheets have antibacterial properties and are hypoallergenic. Nice!

  6. Your bed is gorgeous. I am definitely checking into the linen sheets and can’t wait to find out where you bought the blanket! I love the entire look! I have the same PB trellis pillow covers. Can you tell me what kind of inserts you use and what size? Mine just don’t look as fluffy as yours!!! LOL!

    1. I buy one size bigger when I stuff pillows. And always use down. For these pillows, I used a euro sham insert.

  7. I like how your decor “nods” to change in season with subtle textures and the light gold

  8. shelleykrupa1@me.com says:

Can you tell us where you purchased the gold lumbar pillow? I LOVE IT!

    1. I will have a post with the sources soon. But the pillow is out of stock, sorry!

  9. Do you linen sheets need ironed, or do they come out of the dryer like percale?

    1. Linen has a “rumpled” look and it did take me just a minute to get used to. But NOW… I LOVE it!

  10. Looking forward to your reveal! Thanks for turning us on to Saphyr Linens and the fabulous giveaway!

  11. I forgot to mention that there was a time when I was concerned about the softness of linen so (as you suggested) I started with linen pillowcases to see how I liked the feel. Of course I quickly became a believer ?

  12. Laura Harrie says:

Everything looks so soft and lovely! Linen is the way to go!

  13. Linda Asly says:

I love a layered look on my bed, with different neutral colors and textures, however, and please forgive me for my honest opinion, I feel in the photos you shared, it’s just too busy. I love the bed skirt from Soft Surroundings, although it is definitely over priced, it doesn’t quite match the rest of the bedding. Solid pillows instead of the geometric ones would give it a calmer look, and what I assume is a blanket just doesn’t compliment the rest of the look. Sorry, Yvonne, not digging this look. Love your blog, though ?

    1. I have to disagree! I love the look. I think the mixture of the colors and textures look fantastic! It comforting and inviting….

    2. Each to his/her own! I love the bedding I chose and it works for me.

  14. The look is great! I love it! Linen always seems to be a little scratchy…. are these soft to the touch the first time you sleep on them? I would love to try but am a little scared. I am the person that the thought of wool directly on my skin makes me itch…. lol….

    1. They are not itchy at all. They do have a “texture” to them but a soft texture.

  15. I’m excited to see your finished bedroom. Your bed looks soooo comfy. I’ve never tried linen sheets but they do have a nice natural look to them. Are they soft?

    1. They are sooo soft! And get better with age. I’m heading out on a little jaunt in a few weeks and considering taking them with me to my hotel.

  16. Looking forward to the finished product and your list of sources – ready to change over our Master Bed for Fall and I just LOVE your bedskirt !

  17. All of the bed covering looks so pretty. Your combo is great. Yes, some people have the idea that you have to use different fabrics for different seasons. Wool, cotton, linen, and silk are all breathable. I have a large shawl, soft wool combination fabric at the foot of my bed. Part of it is wrapped around a white long-haired kitten. I have soft linen pillows at the top of the bed. The weather outside is probably 95 degrees. So What, I like it.

  18. Tammy Moon says:

looks so comfortable wish i was sleeping in it now

  19. Very pretty sneak peek. I like the bed tray with the pumpkins and little acorns. Works beautifully in blog land. My reality is they would become “soccer balls” for my kitty. He is all that adorns my bed. I am hoping Santa will bring me linen sheets for Christmas. That’s for the inspiration.

  20. Elaine Patafio says:

Please tell me where you bought the linen bed skirt. I love it! And have to have it!

    Thank you,
    Elaine

    1. I’ll have all that info for you soon. Today’s post is sponsored by Saphyr Pure Linen.

  21. Lori Sawyer says:

I love the lamps on each side of bed and your room looks so relaxing!!

  22. What a dreamy room! The small touches of gold are so perfect for that special fall feel. Looking forward to the full reveal. Thanks for introducing me to the Saphyr Pure Linens.
    Shari

  23. How do you keep your linen bedding soft? Mine is always so itchy and rough no matter what I do?

    1. Linen can be a very soft material. Saphyr linen is soft washed before it come to you. And the more it is washed the softer it gets. And it is “lofty”. It’s rumpled and very light to the skin.

    2. If it is linen, maybe it was not good quality. Not sure what to do then. Sorry!

  24. Your bed looks sophisticated, yet, soft and inviting. Love the layering.

  25. any tips on buying a down insert for a duvet?

    1. Great idea for a blog post. Look for one to answer your question in September! Thanks Michelle!

  26. Botanic Bleu says:

    Hi, Yvonne,
Here in hot Texas, I use a flat flannel sheet as a light quilt/blanket in the winter. With all the beautiful options for flannel sheets, it is so easy to find ones that mix and match with my sheets. I use a cotton sheet set. Then place a flannel sheet as the next layer after the top flat sheet. The third and final layer is a light weight quilt. I love the look of down duvets, but they are just too heavy for my king size bed, and they are too hot even in the dead of winter.

During the summer, I only use sheets and a light weight quilt that often gets thrown back because it is too warm.

LOVE the look of your bedding! I also love all your Christmas bedding where you often have a thick, fluffy duvet folded over at the foot of the bed.

    Happy Fall,

    Judith

  27. The fresh white Soft Washed Pure Linen Sheet Set, it’s an essential. I like the white, not too bright.

  28. I did not know that about linen for all seasons. I thought summer mainly.

  29. Beverly Poag says:

I’ve been internet shopping for linen bedding ..then your blog pops up about linen bedding! I bought 2 ruffled edged pillowcases and plan on using them with a white down comforter…would love to order a linen sheet set,. Where did you purchase your bedskirt? I love it!! Is the deckle hem the raw edge, like yours? I totally trust your input on beautiful linens. I learned from you that all linen is not the same.

    1. I’ll be doing a post soon about the sources for my master bedroom

  30. Denise Carlson says:

Yvonne I love gold also! I have never tried linen sheets and I have to admit I’m a bit of a sheet snob , it would be great to win and have this be my introduction to them.
    Thanks, Denise

  31. Elizabeth Compton says:

  52. Debbie Lee Johnson says:

I just found your website and the peacefulness that it exudes is so helpful to calm my nerves and worries about making decorating decisions. I feel so incompetent in making these types of decisions even though I know I am an intelligent person. Right now I am trying to make a decision about wood flooring and I just noticed the flooring in your bedroom. Can you tell me what type of wood floor you decided on and/or if you have ever written on making that flooring decision? I am getting so lost in all of the flooring choices.

    1. Hi Debbie, Welcome to the StoneGable family!!!! Don’t overthink flooring. The flooring in our bedroom was chosen to match the other hardwood floors in our home. If I had a choice I would not choose flooring that is so orange! But refinishing every inch of flooring is not in our budget. So we just live with it and are thankful!

If I were choosing flooring I’d choose a wood that is not too dark and not too light and not too orange. A soft brown would be my choice. Hope this hleps.
