Christmas Gift Ideas

When I was a little girl my sister and I loved the Sears Christmas catalogue! It was filled with the most marvelous and magical holiday things.  We could not wait for it to come in the mail! This was way before the internet and ordering online! Lisa and I could entertain ourselves for hours playing our favorite game called “Pick”. I have no idea how we came up with this game and it’s quirky rules but it was thrilling! We would sit next to each other with the Christmas catalogue on our laps and take turns picking our favorite things from one page at a time. Once an item was picked, the other person could not pick it. And we took turns being first to “pick” from each page.  Would you like to play Pick with me today? You will love this game. And I have such great pictures for you to “pick” from…

Lisa and I pretended that we would own the things we picked and dreamed up how our someday homes or bedroom would look with our “picks” in them. I guess you could say it was like window shopping, but with a catalogue!

Today we are playing Pick with beautiful images from Cost Plus World Market! This is also a great way get some great gift ideas for the people on your Christmas list!

Okay, you go first…What are you going to pick from this page?

WORLD MARKET Holiday Tablescape

Great choice! Are you sure you have never played this game before? You are a natural!

My turn.

OH, it’s so hard to pick… I guess I’ll pick the table runner. I think it’s modern and fun designed will work perfectly on my kitchen table. And I love the edges of the runner.

Now, it’s your turn again…and remember you can no longer pick my table runner! It’s off the table so to speak.

Did you say the tall fluted white trees? Stop muttering! Since I did not hear you clearly I guess I’ll  pick them!!! They will look gorgeous on my dining room table for Christmas dinner! Sorry, you need to speak up!

One more pick! I forgot to tell you that each player can only have three picks per page.

Ooops…. you took so long swooning over the table that you lost your turn. I guess I forgot to tell you that rule too. You must pick within 10 seconds! I bet you would have picked those charming mercury glass votives. I had my eye on them too!

So, my last pick is… gosh! Will it be the unique shaped dinnerware that I can already picture on my table or the gold bottomed glasses that I need for our bar? Oh… um… okay! The dishes. I love love love white dishes and have never seen any like these before. Yea!!!

Isn’t Pick fun?

If you are wondering where you can really get these beautiful items, that’s easy. Cost Plus World Market is opening a brand new store in Shrewsbury New Jersey on Thursday December 10th! I’m going to be there shopping the store on the 9th. I’ll be looking for that fabulous table runner… I can’t wait!

Ready for another Pick Page? Here it is…

Holiday Pillows

Oh my goodness, pillows! My favorite! Since you went first last time I’ll go first this time…

I pick the naughty pillow. We will have a house full for Christmas and I know who’s bed this fun long pillow is going on Christmas Eve… plus a lump on coal!

Now you pick. I hope you didn’t just pick what I  wanted! Good! You picked something different. There is always so much suspense in this game! You had me going there for a minute!

My turn… I’m picking the daybed. Yes, that IS fair! Anything on a page if fair game. Did I forget to tell you that rule too?

As I would always have to say to my little sister… “okay, go”! Your turn again. Did you pick that stunning star? Awwww, I wanted that! It’s really magnificent! Oh well, it will look so beautiful on your porch or foyer or hung next to your tree. Lucky, duck (I’d say that too)!

My last pick…I’ve gotta pick the red velvet pillow! How rich, right? I love to pair pillows together and the red velvet would go with so much!

Last pick for you (did you see the big basket I’m drooling over?). Are you picking that? Oh, you have such good taste!

Look at the other pillows and throws they have at the new Shrewsbury store!!!! Can you imagine playing Pick in here?

Really fun happenings!

Okay, back to our game… This is the PICK MYSTERY ROUND.

Here’s the rules. You can only pick the presents on this page. When you pick a package you will get a year’s supply of what that present is wrapped in AND a year’s supply of what is inside! Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it?

However, pick carefully. There is one present that has a special fabulous, I-can’t-believe-I-won-this-prize and one present that is a booby trap! Hint: You might want to slowly move your hand back and forth over the presents and try to chose the one’s that feel “hot” to you.

Holiday Wrapping

You first… Oh, good choice! I love that wrapping paper. And I’m wild about cute bows!

My turn… I’ll pick the one that has the sweet doggies on it. They say good things come in little packages! I would’t mind getting a years supply of that sassy wrapping paper and pretty red ribbon! Oh, yummy! I got peppermint bark just like the ones pictured on the shelves at the Shrewsbury Cost Plus World Market! Nothing says Christmas like a year’s supply of Peppermint bark!

Look they have shelves full of great chocolates and candy waiting for you! YUM!

IMAG2740

Your turn… ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO CHOOSE THAT ONE? Did you move your hand over the presents to see which one felt hot. Did I tell you it only works if you are singing a Christmas carol standing on one foot while you are moving your hand around? Okay then…

Oh, good for you! You got a year’s supply of hot sauce like the ones pictured above. What a great present, huh? I guess you knew that reindeer love hot sauce when you chose that adorable reindeer bag with the polka dot tissue paper! Great pick, hottie!!!!!

My pick…I’m wild about polka dots too so I’m going to pick the red and white polka dot package with the red and burlap ribbon. How cute is this one? Oh, what a great gift. I’ve always wanted this! And you know my love for burlap any time of the year!

Here’s your last pick… make it a good one! Hurry, you time’s almost up! You did it again… you took my next pick. That Nutcracker is so handsome. There has to be something amazing inside!

OH NO! Too bad! I told you to feel for a hot gift. You got the booby prize. Well I guess we will all know where you will be on Christmas Eve while Santa is passing out great gifts like the ones from Cost Plus World Market in Shrewsbury New Jersey.

You will be at the North Pole mucking out the reindeer stalls. Too bad! I so glad you chose the Nutcracker before I could. Thanks so much!

It’s my last pick! The big red organza bow is calling my name! I’ll pick the present with the black paper with the red and green Christmas writing on it. LOVE those colors. Did you know that they are my colors for Christmas this year. A little bit of black with red, green and white is classy, sassy and fun!

What did I get? I can’t tell you… this package says, “Don’t open before Christmas”! Do you think it might be the I-can’t-believe-I-won-this-prize present? Well, we won’t know until Christmas.

Now here’s two other pictures for you to play Pick with someone you love. I hope you remember the rules… and even though it’s hard… no fighting over these great Christmas goodies! If someone steals your pick you can always run out to Cost Plus World Market in Shrewsbury New Jersey and pick one up for yourself!

  1. Wow, I get the first comment! It’s only six a.m., I guess it sometimes pays to be the early riser.

This was so fun and brought back lovely memories of playing a similar game with my own sister, using the Montgomery Ward catalogue, which we called monkey wards!

Christmas is for the young at heart, and that sure is you. Thanks, I’m going to my own world market this weekend.

    1. They will have those wonderful goodies that are on the Pick pages and more!

  2. Oh Yvonne, I’m sitting here on my own laughing out loud, you’ve brought back some good memories! We used to do something similar but would only allow ourselves one item from each page, it was a tough decision x

  3. Yvonne, you are a blessing in disguise. I was so slow at picking I was just so amazed at the beautiful things in America and the chocolates and all the other gorgeous articles, not forgetting the low prices! This is a wonderful time of the year, spiritually we are all united across the world. I had a good chuckle as well! Thanks for the lovely website.

    1. I love the low prices at World Market too! They have such unique gift items. I can’t wait to shop at the one in New Jersey on Wednesday. I’ll be loading up my sleigh!

  4. I loved to get the Christmas catalog and would look through it several times before Christmas! I really liked the women’s clothes they always had lots of sparkle. I pick the dots with the curly ribbon. Merry Christmas to all!

Yvonne – Our little children LOVED the Sears Christmas catalogue in the 1960’s. That is how I potty trained our son 🙂 Now one of my precious little children is 51 and battling breast cancer. Please say a prayer for Paige.

  6. Linda Ann says:

I haven’t thought about the Sears catalog in years!!! I used to love going through it as a child and then when I was newly married. I would sit and look at all the amazing home items I couldn’t afford and just dream….my mother told me that she did the same thing when she was first married and had no money. She would sit and make lists like it was an actual order and throw the paper away….funny how much this catalog meant to all out us…..simpler times, for sure!
    Happy Monday to all!!!

  7. Pam Griner says:

My siblings and I played a similar version…”Pick Choose” we called it and the game would occupy us for hours. Ahhhh, those were the days.

  8. I don’t usually comment but remembering the catalogs we used to get brings back a lot of memories…..the excitement of a new catalog and thoughts of what the old catalog could be used for. Paper dolls and rugs and curtains for the doll houses that my mother made from cardboard boxes. She would let me pick the dresses I liked and then she would make them for me without a pattern. One memory brings back another and another. Thank you for reminding me of things I haven’t thought about in a long time. Merry Christmas.

  9. Lanita Anderson says:

What good memories….my brother and I used to play a similar game when the Christmas catalogs arrived! Loved the pictures you shared and all of the wonderful gift ideas. Blessings to you!

  10. Karen VanLoo says:

We loved the Sears Catalogs too, those were the best days growing up in the late 60’s and 70’s. They made the best toys back then too, I loved baby dolls, and Barbie dolls! We had Barbie everything, my sister and I would play for hours. When I discovered eBay back in 2000 I started searching and collecting dolls I had as a child and have collected all of my favorite dolls from back in the day, including Mattel’s Liddle Kiddles. You just made me remember so many fun things about Christmas!

    1. Hi Karen, I’m so glad Pick brought back such great memories! And aren’t the items on the World Market Pick pages amazing?

  11. Wow, I had completely forgotten about the days of the Sears Christmas catalog! That brought back memories! I LOVE World Market, and can’t wait to visit their new store!

    1. I can’t wait either. I’ve been invited to attend on Wednesday. I am so so excited! Going to finish up my Christmas list there!

  12. We played “The catalog game” and were not as mannerly as you – on each page whoever touched the picture of the item first got it and it was not available to the others playing, they had to choose from the remaining items. The other day my adult daughter and I played it while we were making bourbon balls for our holiday gifts.

  13. I don’t usually comment, but couldn’t resist this fun post. I used to decorate my dream bedroom from the Sears catalog. Love World Market for just about everything.Have fun at your new store and thanks fr the cute post.

  14. Lisa Bates says:

I had the biggest smile on my face while reading your blog this morning. My sister and I use to play a very similar game, picking and choosing things we loved on pages of magazines! Thank you for bringing back some great memories! PS – I love your blog!!!!

    1. Thanks so much Lisa. Loving to look at pretty things must be universal!

  15. Yvonne, you’re the greatest.

  16. This was a fun post. I love World Market and frequent the one in Tacoma. My tree is up, decorations are up and I’m ready for the celebration! (I could go back for a few more pillows though!)

  17. Ellie LaJuett says:

I love the pick an item game. I play it every time I see a great decorating post or great shopping sights. I do have a crush on those white dishes and I have never met a pillow I didn’t like. I wish I had that store in my area!!!

    1. Did you know you can order from World Market online? Look for the link in my post. Just click on the word World Market and it will take you to their online shop. I do wish you could join us in Shrewsbury for all the great fun and prizes etc!

  18. What’s better than a little retail therapy? A little retail therapy with friends – can’t wait to shop til we drop together in Shrewsbury!

  19. Wow. You have brought back memories of me and my sister doing the same thing with catalogs. We couldn’t wait for the Christmas catalogs to arrive, i.e. Sears, JC Penny, Montgomery Ward. We played the same game! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

  20. What memories this brings back! We didn’t have many catalogues in the 1950s but Miles Kimball was the one my sisters and I loved. So many cute things that we knew we couldn’t afford but we filled out the order form as though we could! I’m pretty sure I’ve made up for that lack of ‘pretty stuff’ in the ensuing years. World Market is full of those kinds of goodies!

  21. Jeri Ann Thompson says:

When my brother and I were young, the Sears Catalog was our door to the world of Christmas magic. My Mama didn’t drive, so getting out and doing a lot of Christmas shopping wasn’t an option. She would tell us to go through the catalog and pick out things we liked. From our choices, she would select certain treasures and place a catalog order for our Christmas. When Daddy got off work, he would go to Sears and pick up the catalog order and that is how Mama did her Christmas shopping. We always received things we loved, but it was always a surprise to see what of all the things we had circled that we would receive. Precious memories!

  22. Theola Kim says:

You are such a gift to me. I look forward each day to my email from you. Your generosity in preparing and sharing all of the great ideas is greatly appreciated. You are just a beautiful spirit.

  23. My sister, mom and I used to do the same thing and called it Pick too! We’d get the catalog out on Saturday night and go thru it and pick our favorites on each page. For some reason I always “picked” a ruffled lavender bedspread set (curtains & pillows too) for our matching canopy beds. I didn’t know anyone else ever played “pick” but it looks like I’m in good company!

  24. GwenCondi says:

Oh such fun!!! What a fun game. I love make believe just as much!!!! I think my Dad had to hide the Sears catalog til Dec 1st though!!!!

  25. Thanks for another wonderful blog Yvonne – you are so creative and entertaining. I live in Sydney (Australia) and we don’t have JC Penny, Sears or some of the other wonderful department stores that you have in the U.S. However, I am on the lookout for beautiful Christmas decorations and you have given me some great ideas.

  26. Oh my Yvonne that brought back so many memories of my sister and I playing. In
Canada when I was a young girl the only catalogues were Simpson Sears and Eatons. I was always Eatons and she was always Sears. lol. We just called it “playing catalogue” Wonderful blog, most entertaining and made me smile several times. Sorry to say World Market doesn’t ship to Canada. boo hoo. Thank you

    Patricia

  27. I really loved this game! I want to play it with my sisters on Xmas Eve!

  28. What a fun post, my sister and I played a similar game and also chose which of the models we hoped to look like when we grew up! I live near this store and can’t wait for the grand opening, thanks for the sneak peak!

  29. Yvonne, I adore your blog and your farmhouse design. It is probably the only blog that I ALWAYS read. Thank you for all the great ideas you share every post.

Please don’t be offended, but you seriously need a proofreader. I find small grammar/spelling errors every time. Understand that this is a curse of sorts–I just can’t overlook them. But I would love to support this excellent blog by proofing your posts for you. Interested??

If not, no problem. I will continue to be one of your biggest fans.
