The most fun part of decorating, for me, is accessorizing! It’s a time to layer great accents and let my personality shine! It’s also a time to put a few curated and well edited trendy items in a room to give it a fresh look. Accessories should be fun, add a layer of pretty things for our eyes to catch and be inexpensive. Because I like to change up my accessories quite often I want them to work with many rooms in my home and cost under $50.00! Today it’s episode 5 at Decorating Tips and Tricks and we are talking about free or reasonably priced accessories for our homes. And today I’m sharing more tips about accessorizing here on the blog!
Here are a few suggestions for using accessories in your home!
USE WHAT YOU LOVE
Home decor accessories should show off your personality and things you love! If you love blue and white pottery place trio of pretty decorative blue and white jars together in a vignette. If you have a penchant for flowers and plants grab some stick and twigs or some flowers from the garden and make up a big showy arrangement.
Just one caution! Don’t over do it! Your room should hint at what you love not be a museum for it! Use an edited hand when displaying collections!
DON’T OVERSPEND
My rule of thumb when buying accents and accessories for my home is not to spend more than $50.00 an item. Most of the time it’s much less! Don’t forget to shop your basement, upcycle what you have with paint and to walk your yard for organics to use as accessories!
Don’t forget to look for home accents that will bring a layer of texture and sparkle to a room!
USE SEASONAL ACCESSORIES
Using seasonal accessories are a great way to bring the outside in! Use cut greens in the winter, nests and bulb flowers in the spring, beach accents and garden blooms in the summer and lots of pumpkins and other squash in the fall! Mix them with burlap covered books, fun decorative orbs, large beads, white pottery, moss covered balls, a stack of dishes, a pretty colorful bowl, tall candlesticks and any other accessories you have to tell a little “story”!
When it comes to seasonal decor, less is best but make sure you have a touch of the season in your home with accessories!

I think accessories make a room…great suggestions…..
very beautiful ! love your ideas
Good advice
Oh, my goodness. You crack me up. “Hint at what you love, not be a museum for it.” Great advice! I’m still in the ‘less is more’ mode after all the grandeur of Christmas. I’m sure Spring will dictate a few more vignettes around the house, though.
I’m so glad you give you a giggle today!
Great tip of setting a $50 limit. And shopping from your basement. I move things around from room to room until I find the right combination of “stuff”.
I always look for beautiful inexpensive ways to decorate my home because I like to change things up often. Thanks for caring enough to share ???
My favorite, the birds, certainly a sign of spring! I’m also fond of the wine corks.
Thanks for putting the items with the stores!!
You are welcome Robin!
Great ideas for so little money.
Thanks for the great tips. Less is best in my house to keep the dust to a minimum. I try to add a pop of color for each season. I hope you’re healing nicely.
Thank you for great ideas!! Love to re-purpose and give things a new look!! And, LOVE StoneGable!!
loved the podcast, Thanks
I’m knee deep in snow, so headed out to my other rooms to shop! Great idea. I’ll feel like Spring in no time.
LOVE the ideas!!! I need to use more seasonal items and to “shop” my home!
I love your ideas! Thank you.
So fun listening to Tips and Tricks today…love the friendship between the 3 of you.
Diney from Camano
I try to keep accessories in the same color family so
I can shop my home.Love adding greenery and flowers.
Thanks for the great ideas.
Great as always! I better get down to my basement store and get shopping…can’t wait for spring!
I’m embracing a more minimal look (and more minimal in what I have in general). For me, it feels so much lighter, not only visually, but emotionally as well. Now when I’m in a store and spot something, I ask myself…Do I really love this?, Do I want to dust it? Almost always…it is a “no”. No more “impulse” purchases. More thoughtfulness into what I purchase to bring home.
Just listened to podcast #5 and want to add I also use trays as backdrops by propping them up against a wall & assembling vignettes in front of the tray. I have also covered pillows by tying large silk printed scarves around the pillow and tying the ends in decorative knots. Really enjoying all of the podcasts!
I love fresh flowers in either a white or glass pitcher. I use my pitchers more for flowers than water.
Another great podcasts with great tips. I’m going to try those pink light bulbs, love a cloche on anything small and pillows can be made from almost anything. Your no sew idea is brilliant!
Love your ideas and I am going to put them to good use. Thank you
I love your blog. I look forward to it every day.

Love Love Love this look! Just pinned it!!
How do you organize and store the accessories that you aren’t using?
Great question Donna. I have a large basement and store everything on shelves.
Expensive or not, it’s all in how it is grouped and displayed.
Thanks for the helpful tips on accessorizing!
thank you for sharing your ideas. Unique, elegant and simple. Love all!
I love all these little touches to make a home look gorgeous!
I love decorating with corks – and so does my dog. She thinks they are treats just for her! No more corks at her level :o)

Really enjoying your podcasts!!
Yea! So glad to hear!
Thanks for all the inspiration, Yvonne! It was going to be a dreary weekend so last Friday I hit the craft store on the way home from work for the few items I needed and over the weekend, I made various size embroidery hoop orbs and sprayed them in ORB and flat black finishes and just LOVE them! You’d think they were wrought iron. Then to replace the greenery on my front door, I made the sweater wreath from old knitted scarves and it looks welcoming on the front door. Love, love, love your ideas, trends, tips, recipes…keep ’em coming 🙂
Looking through the pictures here, is like a moment of Zen.
Love the post
I am really trying to minimize my collections. Why is it so difficult to let go of “things”…..but I am working on it!

Martha
I’m all about changing the look of solid pieces with flowers, ribbon, and various candles. 😉 The older I get, the more I prefer to keep the items I love around me, and just change up their look with accessories. You always do a great job of that – a great balance, as always!
BEAUTIFUL!!! The hydrangeas are gorgeous! I literally have 4 foot snow piles along my sidewalk. All greenery is looking great to me!

I really like the look of decor in trays, and makes me want to try it at my house.
I enjoyed the podcast today. I’m starting to discern your voices, but not quite sure yet. I often tell the plants that I buy ( usually reduced and on their last leg)that I am taking them home with me because no one should die alone, not even a plant. That said,I love to bring them into my home they add such beauty albeit temporary.

Some pretty things in your home….simple but pretty
Love the podcast. Such fun. Wish I had a basement but I try to store things in a closet or attic. Years ago there was a guy on HGTV that said we all need a “prop closet”. That’s when I started moving my things around. Love your decorating style.
LOVE ALL YOUR DECORATING TIPS AND RECIPES, ALWAYS A SUCCESS.

Lots of lovely ideas! Someday, when I don’t have twin six-yr.-old grandsons careening around the house I will accessorize more!
Love, love, love your new podcast.
I always look forward to all of your fantastic and creative ideas on how to decorate!
Yvonne, I always enjoy your posts in my inbox and on FB too. Such wonderful tips and inspiration!
I hosted my book study group for the first time last week. When the first guest arrived and walked into my dining room, (I have a very modest home), her face lit up and she said how beautiful my home is. At that point, I silently thanked you. I knew her appreciative comments were because of your inspiration this past year since I’ve been following you.
I also love the podcasts. They make me feel as if I know you better, and that in itself is a treat. Thanks for taking on this new venture. Take good care, and I hope you feel better soon.
Yours is one of the first ones I started following. Your style is amazing.
I love your creativity. How you can get something simply and make it look like a million dollars.
You inspire me! Thank you!
So many great & fun ideas ! Thanks for sharing
Always enjoy your ideas. Hope you are feeling better each day.
I started listening to your Podcasts this week while driving to and from work. Do you know what I love the most? I mean, I LOVE the decorating advice, I love that you can hear your friendship in your conversations, I love how real you are. But what I have loved most is how much all three of you sound exactly the way I imagined you would sound!!! You sound like long time friends. Please keep it up! I’m learning so much and you’re helping my creativity flow.
I love to change my theme in my living area just by using different flowers and or throw pillows.
I love accessories to my home. The is what brings out my personality.
Great ideas and very timely?
Love the podcasts… I can relate to the pepto pink walls… same thing happened to me. Went to work, hubby painted the “terra cotta” and I can home to pepto! Although I didn’t live with it, hubby repainted the next day… Home Depot mixed the paint wrong!
Blessings!!
Monja Caughron
What fun it all is and so rewarding just using any one tip or idea or suggestion! I enjoy it all everyday and want to thank you so much for all you do….there is so much to look forward to everyday. You are wonderful!!
My whole back wall of my basement is shelves for all my decorating items. I’m trying to use these items more often then going out and buying new every season. Love your podcast. Sounds like you have so much fun. Made me smile!
Great advice. I really appreciate the links you give us. Not only saves me time, but gives me an idea of price comparisons.
I love to accessorize in my home. I always like getting new ideas and new advice.
I also like to refresh accessories with big impact and little effort with a coat of paint. It’s rewording to find potential in decor items that appear to have no value and transforming them into pieces that will be loved again. Thanks for your great tips!
Love your decorating tips! Your pretty home, is like a breath of fresh air! Hope your feeling better each day! Hugs…

As always great ideas!!
Thanks for the constant inspiration!!
Peg
Thank you for continuing to inspire! I, too, was an elementary school teacher in my early life. I think changing my classroom décor with the seasons, and to accompany lessons “trained” me. I was continually making bulletin board characters, borders, and also making classroom games because of the cost to purchase ready made items. After leaving the teaching profession, my outlet became my home décor which I still change and re-arrange.
This site has the BEST tips for saving money with decorating by using what you own. Placement is key, along with the theme. THANK YOU for keeping me inspired!!
Love your ideas, and less is better
Thank you for the tips.I try to use your tips when I am decorating. When I am finished I think to myself…This is something Yvonne would do…LOL!!!
Your blog is such fun to read. I just switched out a green wooden box with winter greens and pinecones for a white chamber pot with winter greens and no pinecones. Just moving things around makes a difference.
Great tips, Yvonne. I love the orb you made with embroidery hoops!
Fantastic ideas. I love that you didn’t just walk into a store and buy all the cute things from that “chain”. This looks like a collection all all types of items that you love. It is creative and personal.
LOVE the tips!
Love your website and all of your ideas!
Thanks, Cathy!

Keeping it simply, because less is more. Words to decorate by. Thanks!
Awesome and wonderful info and tips … Thank you for sharing
Today you have inspired me to go shopping in my attic… Yes, I said the attic. It is to accessorize and repurpose the living room decor. Love the idea of removing all furniture from the room. ” Return and refresh”. Today is my day to do just this. Love your blog. Inspiring…
I am enjoying each day’s “inspiration” this Winter. It always gives me a boost and incentive to “shop in my own house”.
Thank you for your great ideas!
Great ideas!
Where can printed burlap be found, please?
You always have great info to pass on! Empting a room of accessories is a great idea lots of work but worth it.
