How To Paint The Planter

Paint the planter and saucer.

I used paint that I already had. This planter is bright and happy and bold!

I painted the outside of the container and the inside about 1/4 the way down from the top.

PAINTING A PLANTER

Let the container thoroughly dry.

Creating A Fun Design

PAINTING A CONTAINER FOR AN HERB GARDEN

Now, this is the fun part! I love the embellishment part of any project! No wonder I am the embellishment queen!

Be creative! There are so many fun and easy designs that can be painted on an herb garden container!

This motif is so so easy! Even if you are not crafty YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

Here’s how to make it…

PAINTING A CONTAINER
  • Dip the blunt round end of a foam brush into craft paint and gently press down on the container.
  • Then dip the end of the foam brush in the paint again and make another dot
  • Keep making dots
  • Spread the paint dots evenly out over the entire pot
  • Add smaller dots by dipping the tip of a paintbrush into white paint

I worked in sections so I would not smear any wet paint.

First I added the big dots to the container and then the small dots. Make sure the planter is completely dry and then spray it with a sealer.

Now, let’s fill our container herb garden!

Herb Garden Plants

Planting the herb garden was a bit of an adventure! Planting day was stormy, rainy, windy, and chilly! So not being one to let a little weather thwart my plans I put a dropcloth down on the dining table and started planning!

CONTAINER HERB GARDEN- HERBS TO GO IN THE PLANTER

Here are my favorite herbs that are sun-loving and hardy…

  • thyme
  • oregano
  • tiny basil
  • parsley
  • sage
  • rosemary

These yummy culinary herbs in the herb garden are hardy and smell wonderful! I also love mint and chives but I keep them in their own pots.

Pro Tip

Plant the tallest herbs in the center of a container and the smaller herbs around the perimeter. This will make the container of herbs look balanced and attractive.

Easy Tips For Success

Potting herbs is easy! Here’s how…

  • use a good quality potting soil
  • take the plants out of their plastic pots and gently loosen up the roots but not so much to lose the dirt holding the roots together
  • add enough soil to the container so the root ball rests on it and the base of the plant is a little lower than the rim of the container
  • fill in all the gaps and spaces between the herbs with more soil
  • give the garden a good watering in
ADDING DIRT TO A CONTAINER HERB GARDEN

It’s a good idea to go back in a day or two to see if the herb garden might need a bit more soil.

HERBS

This herb garden can stay inside in a very bright window for a few weeks but does best outside in a sunny spot!

I’ll be moving my herb garden out to our patio where it gets more sun. Right now it is sitting on the bench on our front porch.

  1. Such a cute and easy project.

  2. I LOVE the shape of the pot that you chose… and using the ends of handles for making dots is always so easy… you’re right… ANYONE can do it! Pinned!

  3. When I saw the picture for this post I hoped you would tell us where you got the pot. Even better, you showed us how to make it. Thank you Yvonne.

    1. LOL! I’m so glad you liked it! It was a fun little painting project!

  4. It seems to really be safe to plant perennials here in North Carolina but I wait till next month to plant my annuals. I am planning to put in a new herb garden area outside my kitchen door but have to determine the sunniest area. Love our big old trees for shade but they limit my planting options.
A happy and blessed Easter and beautiful spring to you and your family.

  5. I went to Lowe’s yesterday to purchase sweet mint to pot for a friend’s birthday. Well, there were only two small pots and one was pitiful so I got one sweet mint and one spearmint to mix. I found a cute small/medium sized pot with tray attached at TJ Maxx. Love mint in cool summer iced tea. Your pot with dots is too cute!

I just found you this morning and have been reading tons of stuff! I love it all! I am making this beautiful culinary arrangement today when I get home (if my local greenhouse has the plants). My pot is significantly deeper but appears to be about the same diameter. Will that work or should I get a more shallow pot?
