These fall tablescape ideas use pumpkins, mums, candles, and foraged finds to help you set a warm, welcoming table all season long.
Fall gives you the richest, warmest elements of the whole year to work with. Pumpkins, mums, golden leaves, and treasures gathered on a brisk walk all belong on your table right now. You’ll find more than 100 ideas here, and each one is easy to bring to your own table, whether you like it simple, formal, or somewhere in between.
Setting a beautiful table is one of my greatest little pleasures. I like to take my time and set it in advance, so it becomes a relaxed, creative project rather than a rush before guests arrive. Put a fall table on your fall bucket list this year, then pull your dishes out of the cupboard and let’s get started.
Tartan And Decorative Throws
Using a tartan throw as a tablecloth is one of the simplest ways to set a fall table. It sets the mood the moment it goes down and gives you a ready-made color palette to build the rest of your table around.
No tartan? A plaid throw, a pashmina, or any textile in colors you love will work just as well. What matters most is laying down something rich, warm, and full of seasonal color.
The throw on my table is an Ancient Buchanan tartan car rug, and you can find my Ancient Buchanan tartan throw here.
🌿 TIP BOX: Lay your throw over a solid neutral tablecloth so the whole table is covered and the plaid becomes the star. On a long, narrow table, fold the throw lengthwise and use it as a runner instead.
Fall Inspired Dishware
You don’t need a whole set of fall dishes to create a handsome fall table. A set of fall-inspired bowls or salad plates is enough, and that small nod to the season sets the mood for the entire table.
Seasonal dishes don’t have to cost much, either. Some of my favorite places for finding budget-friendly fall dishes are HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Kirkland’s, and Wayfair.
My one caution: skip anything too cutesy. So many plates with fall designs look juvenile, so pass them by if you want an elegant, put-together table. Look for natural colors, classic patterns, and simple shapes that will feel right on your table year after year.
🌿 TIP BOX: Start with fall salad or dessert plates layered on your everyday white dinner plates. They cost far less than a full set and turn your table toward fall in minutes.
My Favorite Fall Inspired Dishes
- turkey plates
- leaf bowls
- acorn salad plates
- pumpkin dessert plates
- wooden dishes
- brown transferware
- big fall platters
- amber glass dessert plates
- stoneware mugs for warm cider
If you have a great source for seasonal dishes, share it in the comments so everyone can enjoy it.
Fall Color Combinations For Your Dishes
If leaf dishes and acorn plates aren’t your style, collect dishes in colors that suit fall instead. Stack them in pleasing color combinations, add a few fall elements around them, and your table will look rich and seasonal.
Mixing blue and white with orange is one of my favorite fall design tricks. It gives a fall table a sophisticated, collected look, and it lets you use blue and white dishes you may already own.
I also have a set of square rust-colored dinner plates I picked up at Pier 1 years ago, and they come out every fall.
🌿 TIP BOX: Pick one color from your tablecloth or napkins and repeat it in at least one layer of your dishes. That repeated color ties the whole table together.

More Fall Color Combinations To Try
- black and white check with green
- brown and cream
- all white with one burnt orange dish
- turquoise, brown, and white
- mustard yellow, deep aqua, and black
- gold, olive green, and gray
- rust, cream, and sage
- plum, copper, and ivory
Pumpkins
Pumpkins are nature’s perfect fall table element! They are quintessentially fall. Use them… and use them liberally on a fall table!

Pumpkins are nature’s perfect fall table element, and they belong on your table in generous numbers.
I tend to go a little heavy-handed with pumpkins on my fall tables. I adore them, and this is the time of year I let them shine.
All shapes and sizes work together beautifully. Most of the time, I stick with one color of pumpkin on the tables I set, which keeps a generous display from looking cluttered.
🌿 TIP BOX: Pair faux pumpkins with a few real ones. Faux pumpkins last the whole season, and real ones bring natural texture and color to the table when guests are coming.
Ways To Use Pumpkins On A Fall Table
- at each place setting as name tags
- at each place setting on top of a stack of plates or in a bowl or cup
- rolled across the length of the table as a centerpiece
- perched on top of candlesticks
- hollowed out and used as candleholders
- hollowed out with a small floral arrangement in them
- gilded with gold leaf
- tied to each folded napkin with velvet ribbon
- gathered in a wire basket on the sideboard

Fall Chargers And Placemats
Fall chargers should be textural and organic. This is the perfect time of year for woven willow chargers or anything made from natural materials, and they add lovely layers and visual depth to a fall table.
What To Do With Chargers When Dinner Is Served
One question I’m often asked is what to do with chargers after dinner. After everyone is seated and has enjoyed a glass of wine, I usually clear the chargers away. For a self-serve meal, the dinner plates go to the buffet, and when I serve each course, I use the plates without the chargers.
If your charger is really acting as a placemat, leave it right on the table through the whole meal.
More Natural Fall Charger Ideas
- log slices
- grapevine wreaths
- big faux fall leaves
- burlap placemats
- brown paper cut into rectangles with fall drawings going down one side
- hammered copper chargers
- slate rounds
Organic Fall Elements For Your Table
Fall elements should be the stars of a seasonal tablescape, and there is a whole bounty to choose from right now.
The napkin rings in the photo above are made from a section of a paper towel roll wrapped in burlap, with a little flower made from an acorn cap and pinecone scales. You can see how easy they are in Pinecone and Acorn Flower Napkin Rings.
Fall candle rings are another favorite of mine. Slip one around a folded napkin, set a mini pumpkin in the center, or use them around candles in any room of your home.
🌿 TIP BOX: Real fall leaves look beautiful for a few hours, then they curl and dry out quickly. Gather them just before your guests arrive, and they will look fresh for the whole gathering.

Fall Elements To Gather For Your Table
- wheat
- nuts
- marigolds
- pheasant feathers
- gourds
- pears
- apples
- artichokes
- pomegranates
- pyracantha
- leaves
- pinecones
- dried hydrangeas
- evergreen boughs
- acorns
- figs
- candy corn
- grapes
- cinnamon sticks

Candles And Lanterns
Load up on candles and lanterns when you set a fall table. The evenings are growing shorter, and candlelight is always lovelier than overhead lighting.
I like to mix different candlesticks and holders on my table while keeping all the candles the same color. The sizes can vary, but one color keeps the look calm and cohesive.
Don’t be afraid to add a few candlesticks without candles. They become charming perches for mini pumpkins or a small nest filled with acorns.
A generous grouping of candles running down the center of the table creates a warm, almost magical mood for dinner.
🌿 TIP BOX: Use unscented candles on the dinner table so their fragrance doesn’t compete with your meal. Save scented candles for the entry, the powder room, or the buffet.
Candle And Lantern Ideas For A Fall Table

- chunky wooden candlesticks
- glass hurricane covers
- mercury glass candlesticks
- old silverplate candlesticks
- all glass candlesticks

Fall Centerpieces
When it comes to fall centerpieces, the options are endless. My very favorite centerpiece for a fall table is pumpkins.
They can certainly stand on their own, but gild the lily a little by tucking greens, acorns, pinecones, and other fall finds among them.
A dough bowl is a must for me in fall. It’s organic and full of texture and warmth. Fill it cornucopia-style, and it pays homage to the bounty of the season.
There are all kinds of rules about centerpieces, and many of them are practical. The one I always follow is for my guests’ comfort: make sure everyone can see over or through your centerpiece.
🌿 TIP BOX: Before guests arrive, sit down in a few chairs and look across the table. If the centerpiece blocks your view of the person opposite you, lower it or move the tallest pieces to the ends of the table.

Fall Flowers For Your Table
Is it just me, or do many magazines and blogs shy away from using mums on a table? I think it’s because mums don’t photograph well on their own. They need a supporting cast to look their best.
How To Make Mums Centerpiece Ready
When you use mums as a centerpiece, and I hope you will, take them out of those plastic nursery pots and set them in something prettier. Add ornamental peppers, flowering cabbage, or even asparagus ferns alongside them.
Then wedge a few tiny pumpkins, acorns, pinecones, or faux leaves around the soil line. Now your mum is ready for the center of the table.
Another way I often use mums is to cut the blooms right off the plant and set them in tiny containers at each place setting. It’s a sweet, simple way to bring flowers to every guest.
My raised bed gardens keep producing flowers through mid-October, weather permitting. Zinnias, marigolds, salvia, and mums are just a few, and I cut them almost every day to bring in for tables, nightstands, and bathroom vanities.
Fresh Herbs On A Fall Table
Hearty herbs like sage, rosemary, and parsley look lovely in little vases or bottles on a fall table, and they smell wonderful.
🌿 TIP BOX: Lay a sprig of rosemary on top of each folded napkin and tie it with twine. It’s simple, fragrant, and costs next to nothing.

- goldenrod
- bittersweet
- celosia

Your Fall Tablescape Questions, Answered
A table setting is the arrangement of dishes, flatware, glasses, and napkins at each place. A tablescape includes the table setting plus everything that gives the table its look and mood, like the tablecloth, centerpiece, candles, and seasonal elements. However, most people use them interchangeably.
Start with what you already own, especially white dishes, and add fall color with salad plates, napkins, or a plaid throw. Then lean on nature. Pumpkins, leaves, pinecones, acorns, and garden flowers are budget-friendly or free, and they make a fall table feel abundant.
Rich, warm colors like rust, burnt orange, gold, cream, brown, and olive green are classic choices. Blue and white paired with orange is one of my favorite combinations because it looks sophisticated and fresh. Choose one main color and repeat it in a few places on the table so everything feels connected.
Keep a centerpiece low enough for guests to see over, generally under about 12 inches, or tall and slender enough to see through. Save taller arrangements for the buffet, sideboard, or the ends of a long table.
You can set most of the table a day or two ahead, which makes the day of your gathering much more relaxed. Add the fresh elements, like cut flowers, herbs, and leaves, just before guests arrive so they look their best.
Setting a fall table doesn’t have to be elaborate to be beautiful. Start with one idea that speaks to you, maybe a plaid throw, a stack of rust-colored plates, or a row of pumpkins down the center, and build from there. With 101 ideas to choose from, you have everything you need to create a table that feels warm, welcoming, and completely your own.
Put setting a fall table on your fall bucket list this year, and enjoy the time you spend gathered around it with the people you love. I’d love to hear which ideas you try, so share them in the comments.

This is by far my most favorite post! I can’t even tell you how the photos make me feel. Autumn makes my heart sing. I currently live in Egypt and there is nothing that says fall here.
