Have you noticed how expensive bedding can be? Oh my goodness! The majority of designer bedding is out of my price range if it’s not on a deeply discounted sale!
I am in the process of changing up some of the bedding in my guest rooms for spring and summer and wanted the bedding I chose to have that great designer look. I just did not want the big designer price tag! Here are a few things I kept in mind when buying bedding!
BUY THE BEST QUALITY YOU CAN
Buying fabulous quality is always a good choice. I say… “buy the best quality you can”. Now, let me expand on that thought. Always, I repeat always look, wait, and shop the sales. I hardly ever buy anything for full price. I do my research on things like cloud-like soft linens, wonderful goose down duvets, and designer fabrics and then I wait for the sales or shop on sites that I know great quality merchandise is discounted! For me, it’s sorta the thrill of the hunt.
Buying great quality bedding is also less expensive in the long run. Egyptian cotton sheets with a high thread count will wash and dry wonderfully and feel divine. AND they will also last for years!
The longer you want to use something the more money you should be willing to spend. If you only want to get a season or two out of bedding, then don’t spend a lot. However if you want to keep the bedding for several years then a little investment is well worth it! BUT SHOP THE SALES!!!!!
CREATE AN EXPENSIVE LOOK
Don’t let a tight budget cramp your design style!!! You CAN get the look for less… a whole lot less! I spend a good deal of time looking at gorgeous homes and room and things. It’s part of my job. Lucky me! And because I’ve got my eye on lots of upscale designer homewares, I have studied how the designers I admire put together looks I love.
You too can find bloggers and designers who’s style resonated with yours. Or visit stores who’s products you wish you could fill your home. Take pictures! Study how they decorate. Pull a room or a vignette or a bed you admire apart, visually speaking, and develop a sense for how things were chosen to create a “look”.
Remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder so it’s important to know what YOU like and call beautiful.
Don’t settle for less than an expensive beautiful look! Beautiful bedding can make a room!
CHOOSE A THIN SOLID COLOR QUILT AS A BEDSPREAD
This is such a PRACTICAL tip! Choose a solid and neutral colored quilt for your bed and use it as a bedspread. I use thin white quilts on all my beds as a “base”. They are crisp looking, easy to wash and give my bed a designer look. I don’t change them out when I bring new bedding to a room. They stay because they always look nice and go with everything I choose!
Here’s the great things about these quilts. They are not very expensive!!!! I found all of mine at my local HomeGoods. They are all amazing, quality name brands too!
Choosing a white quilt for a bed is a real budget friendly idea!
USE DUVET COVERS
A beautiful designer bed usually has a fluffy duvet at the bottom of it! Duvets are really economical and practical as well as visually pleasing! Once an investment for a duvet insert is made it will last for up to 10 years if properly cared for!
Only the covers need to be replaced! And duvet covers go on sale all the time! Keep your eye out for duvet covers you love!!!!! I found my duvet cover for over 70 % off the original price! It’s a beautiful silky soft cotton with a modern pattern I love! A perfect weight and pattern for spring and summer!
Great quality and an awesome price…just what I look for!
SHAMS PULL BEDDING TOGETHER
Make sure to purchase standard or Euro shams that work with your bedding. I like to match the duvet cover and the shams. Truth be told, I prefer Euros better than standard shams but they are not always available with every duvet.
Usually when a duvet cover is on sale so are the shams. Buy the shams when you buy the duvet cover. Don’t wait on the shams and think you will go back at a later date to get them. You might be sorry! Buy with an eye towards a designer look!
DON’T FORGET ACCENT PILLOWS
Accent pillows are like jewelry for your bed! They add color and texture and fluff! And they can be very very inexpensive! In the case of accent pillows I would choose style and color over quality! I like a nice pillow but it doesn’t have to be extravagant! Accent pillows go a long way towards giving your bedding an expensive designer look!
A great budget- friendly idea is to buy pillow forms and inserts. Use the inserts over and over again changing out the covers. This is what I have done with my new bedding! I found the two square pillow covers on sale and brought up the bunny pillow from the living room. After Easter I’ll change out the bunny pillow with another cover the same size.
ADD A THROW
A throw adds an additional layer of design and interest for very little money!!! Try to find one with lots of texture in a color that compliments the rest of your bedding.
I found this nubby gray throw at Ikea on sale for under $7.00!
USE A TRAY
Add some kind of a tray to a bed for the ultimate in a designer look! It doesn’t need to be a bed tray! Any tray will do. You probably have one somewhere in your home already! Stack it with books, add a little vase of flowers or maybe a tiny picture and you have instant panache!
Such an easy and inexpensive way to get a very expensive layered look!
Now YOU can do it! Use these 8 designer tips and tricks and work on giving all the beds in your home that expensive designer look… even if you are on a tight budget like me!!!!
YES you can!!!!
