60+ Most Common Decorating Mistakes And How To Fix Them
Room by room decorating mistakes and simple fixes to help your home feel more finished, welcoming, and beautifully pulled together.

If a room in your home feels off but you cannot quite explain why, it is often a simple decorating mistake that is easy to fix. Most homes do not need more things. They need a few thoughtful adjustments.
Over the years, I have made just about every decorating mistake on this list. I have hung curtains too low, bought rugs that were too small, and pushed all the furniture against the walls because I thought it would make the room feel bigger. It rarely did. What I learned is that small changes in the right places make a much bigger difference than starting over.
Instead of treating decorating as one big project, let’s walk through each room in your home. Each space has its own common mistakes and simple solutions. As you read, use this framework:
THINK about what feels unsettled.
DECIDE what might be causing it.
DO one practical fix before adding anything new.
You may be surprised how quickly your home begins to feel more finished and welcoming.
Mistakes In The Foyer And How To Fix Them

The foyer is the first space you and your guests see. Even if it is small, it sets the tone for the rest of your home. A few simple adjustments can make it feel more welcoming rather than overlooked.
Leaving The Entry Bare
An empty entry can feel forgotten. Add a small table or cabinet, a mirror, and a lamp if space allows. Even one intentional piece makes a difference.
Letting Clutter Collect By The Door
Shoes, bags, and mail can pile up quickly. Use baskets, a tray, or a drawer to give everyday items a place to land.
Skipping Soft Lighting
Overhead lighting alone can feel harsh. A small lamp adds warmth and makes the entry feel lived in.
Ignoring The Wall Space
Blank walls can make the foyer feel unfinished. Hang artwork or a mirror to anchor the space and reflect light.
Forgetting A Practical Element
An entry should work well, not just look good. Add hooks, a bench, or a catchall dish to support daily life in the space.
THINK: What does your foyer say when someone walks in?
DECIDE: Is it welcoming and functional?
DO: Clear one surface and add one intentional piece this week.
Mistakes In The Living Room And How To Fix Them
The living room is where life happens. If it feels off, it is usually because of a few simple issues that are easy to adjust.
Using A Rug That Is Too Small
A small rug makes furniture look disconnected. In most living rooms, the rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of seating to sit on it.
Pushing All Furniture Against The Walls
Lining up furniture along the walls can make a room feel empty in the center. Pull seating inward to create a comfortable conversation area.
Relying Only On Overhead Lighting
One ceiling fixture rarely feels warm. Add table or floor lamps to soften the space and create a layered glow.
Overcrowding The Coffee Table
Too many small accessories can make the room feel busy. Choose a few meaningful pieces and leave space around them.
Hanging Art Too High
When art floats too close to the ceiling, the room feels disconnected. Hang artwork at eye level so it relates to the furniture below.
Forgetting A Focal Point
Every living room needs something that anchors it, such as a fireplace, a large piece of art, or a styled console. Without one, the space can feel unsettled.
THINK: Does the room feel disconnected or cluttered?
DECIDE: What is one thing that feels off?
DO: Adjust placement before buying anything new.
Mistakes In The Kitchen And How To Fix Them
The kitchen works hard every day. It should feel practical and welcoming, not cluttered or cold.
Overcrowding The Countertops
Too many appliances and decor pieces make a kitchen feel chaotic. Keep only what you use daily on the counter and store the rest.
Leaving The Island Bare
An empty island can feel sterile. Add one simple element, such as a bowl of fruit, a plant, or a small lamp to bring warmth.
Ignoring Lighting Under Cabinets
Shadows make a kitchen feel dim and less functional. Under cabinet lighting or a well-placed lamp can brighten work areas and soften the room.
Not Updating Hardware
Old knobs and pulls can quietly age a kitchen. Replacing them is one of the simplest ways to refresh the space.
Using Decor That Gets In The Way
Decor should not interfere with cooking or cleaning. Keep styling intentional and practical so the kitchen stays easy to use.
THINK: Does your kitchen feel cluttered or cold?
DECIDE: Is it a storage issue or a styling issue?
DO: Clear one surface and restyle it with purpose.
Mistakes In The Bedroom And How To Fix Them
A bedroom should feel restful and balanced. If it feels unfinished or uncomfortable, a few small changes can make a big difference.
Not Anchoring The Bed
A bed against a bare wall can look incomplete. Use a headboard, artwork, or sconces to give it visual weight and presence.
Using Bedding That Is Too Small
Comforters or quilts that barely cover the mattress make the bed look skimpy. Choose bedding that drapes generously for a fuller look.
Skipping Bedside Lighting
Every bed needs proper lighting for reading and winding down. Add lamps or wall sconces at a comfortable height.
Leaving Walls Empty
Blank walls can make a bedroom feel cold. Add simple art, mirrors, or framed prints to create warmth and personality.
Overloading The Bed With Pillows
Too many pillows can make a bed impractical. Keep a balanced number that looks inviting but is easy to manage each day.
THINK: Does the room feel restful and balanced?
DECIDE: What feels unfinished?
DO: Adjust one element before changing everything.
Mistakes In The Dining Room And How To Fix Them
The dining room should feel welcoming and ready, even when it is not set for a meal. Small details make it feel intentional instead of forgotten.
Leaving The Table Bare
An empty table can make the room feel unfinished. Add a simple centerpiece that is low enough for conversation, such as a bowl, greenery, or a few candlesticks.
Using A Light Fixture That Is Too Small
A chandelier that is too small can look out of place. Make sure the fixture is scaled to the table and hangs low enough to feel connected.
Pushing Chairs Too Tightly Together
Crowded seating makes the room feel cramped. Leave enough space between chairs so they can be pulled out comfortably.
Ignoring The Walls
Bare dining room walls can feel stark. Add artwork, a mirror, or a sideboard to give the room depth and balance.
Overdecorating The Buffet Or Sideboard
Too many small pieces can make the room feel busy. Choose a few larger items and leave open space so the eye can rest.
THINK: Does the dining room feel ready or forgotten?
DECIDE: Is the issue scale, lighting, or styling?
DO: Restyle one surface and reassess.
Mistakes In The Bathroom And How To Fix Them

Bathrooms may be compact, but they deserve the same attention as any other room. A few thoughtful changes can make them feel fresh and cared for.
Leaving The Vanity Cluttered
Too many products on the counter make the room feel messy. Keep only daily essentials visible and corral them on a small tray.
Skipping Proper Lighting
Harsh overhead lighting can feel unflattering. Add balanced lighting on both sides of the mirror when possible so the space feels softer and more functional.
Using Towels That Do Not Relate
Random towel colors can make the bathroom feel disconnected. Choose a simple color story and repeat it for a more pulled-together look.
Forgetting Wall Art Or A Mirror Upgrade
Bathrooms often get overlooked when it comes to decor. A framed print, a better mirror, or updated hardware can instantly refresh the space.
Ignoring Storage
Lack of storage leads to visible clutter. Use baskets, cabinets, or shelves to give everything a place.
THINK: Does the bathroom feel calm or chaotic?
DECIDE: Is it a lighting, storage, or styling issue?
DO: Clear the vanity and restyle it with intention.
Mistakes In Hallways And Small Spaces And How To Fix Them
Hallways, corners, and small spaces often get overlooked. But when they are intentional, your whole home feels more finished.
Leaving Hallways Bare
Long empty walls can feel cold. Add artwork, a runner, or even a narrow console if space allows, to give the area purpose.
Ignoring Corners
An empty corner can feel like a missed opportunity. A floor lamp, a plant, or a small chair can soften the space and make it feel complete.
Using Oversized Furniture In Small Spaces
Large pieces can overwhelm a compact area. Choose furniture scaled to the space, so it feels balanced and easy to move through.
Forgetting Lighting In Small Areas
Dark hallways and corners feel closed in. Add a sconce, small lamp, or brighter bulb to open up the space.
Letting Small Spaces Become Drop Zones
Narrow areas often collect clutter. Keep them clear and intentional so they support the flow of your home.
THINK: Does this space feel forgotten?
DECIDE: What small change would make it feel finished?
DO: Add one purposeful element this week.
Decorating mistakes happen to everyone. They are not signs that you are bad at decorating. They are simply small things that need adjusting. The good news is that most rooms do not need more. They need thoughtful changes.
Walk through your home one room at a time. Notice what feels off. Fix one thing. Then step back and look again. Small, intentional changes create rooms that feel settled, welcoming, and truly yours.
You do not need to start over. You just need to start.

Another wonderful post. Very helpful information, thank you !
Can you share a resource for the club chair.
The club chair is amazing! It’s also a swivel chair. I found it at Ethan Allen. Here’s the chair:https://www.ethanallen.com/en_US/shop-furniture-living-room-swivel-chairs/turner-swivel-chair/207082.html#start=1&sz=99
I wanted to paint my master bedroom a “blush of pink”….barely pink. I let a decorator suggest a color and it ended up bubblegum pink. I hated it and paid to have it repainted. Thankfully my husband agreed! I trust my own eye on color more! Now I have a lovely blush of pink, just what I wanted….it has a gray base so it doesn’t jump off the wall or look like a nursery pink. It’s perfect. Spending the money was worth redoing my mistake.
Oh, we have all made that mistake, Toni! I once painted my office what I thought was terracotta and it looked like the inside of an empty Pepto Bismal bottle! I’m so happy you found the perfert “blush of pink”.
