WHITE DISHES… FARMHOUSE STYLE

WHITE DISHES FARMHOUSE STYLE- Creative ways to use dishes in your decor

White dishes are the workhorses in my home… not only in my kitchen! White dishes are perfection in the kitchen but they are also wonderful element to use to decorate our homes with too! And when those dishes are used with a farmhouse bent… oh, my they work magic. My home is a farmhouse, but a modern American one. So I’m not as interested in authentic ironstone as I am great edged dishes and interesting shapes. If you have white dishes in your home, let’s get them out and and create a farmhouse vignette!

Today is FARMHOUSE FRIDAY! And the topic is white dishes! YEA!

You will find these creative bloggers and their “dishes” post at the bottom of this post.

CREATE A FARMHOUSE VIGNETTE WITH WHITE DISHES!

When I think of farmhouse I think of stacking dishes and odd sized bowls in a chippy tray or crate or tool caddy. In this old tool caddy I lined up some pretty white dishes with lots of interesting edges. I just can’t get away from those edges!

I used dishes of different sizes, stacking the larger one in the back and smaller in the front… and mixing up the sizes too! A group of white bowls were stacked right next to the smaller dishes!

To embellish the dishes and fill up some visual space I added some pretty embroidered linen napkins. Do you have napkins you love that are sitting in a drawer? Get them out and use them to work with your white dishes!

How about using small pitchers or creamers for flowers or some old silver as part of a farmhouse vignette? I love love love this look! I collect white pitchers… old, new, chipped, cheap and pricy. If they are white and interesting… they usually find their way into my home!

I often pair natural elements with white dishes. Something textural and organic contrasts beautifully with smooth white dishes. Willow balls are one of my go to organics. They are brambly, and rustic and just the right size! They look especially interesting if the dishes are a little more formal!

And don’t forget that flowers and white dishes play perfectly together! In this vignette pink peonies drip over the edge of the tool caddy sitting next to a stack of dishes!

  5. Very pretty. Love the contrast of the white dishes and the burlap.

  6. I too LOVE dishes with interesting and beautiful edges! I have such a mishmash of them that friends ask me when I am going to “decide” on a favorite pattern! Your dishes are gorgeous!!!! Love how you mix elements together. I have old pitchers full of beautiful old silver pieces all over my kitchen and dining area. My home needs to be remodeled so badly that I only photograph small vignettes. I used to live in a beautiful new farmhouse, it was my dream house. We moved for my husbands job and said we would only live in this ranch for a year, but it has been ten long years with an ugly kitchen : ( so I do my best to cheer up the space! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and dishware, it has inspired me!!!

I love white dishes. I recently bought inexpensive white catering dishes to supplement my delft blue dishes my Dutch mother gave to me. She used them everyday and alas I have many saucers but no cups. Since I have to hand wash the delft it is nice to supplement them with the white dishes that I can run through the dishwasher. I’ll use the white dishes for main course and the delft blue dinner plates for dessert. I also like to mix my white plates among other sets of china when we have our New Years Day open house. I just stack them all mixed up and it is fun to see the guests use the various china. Some even sort though the stack and pick a plate they like most. White plates are a nice way supplement old china plates that you might not otherwise use.

    1. I like this idea too, Barbara! While my dishes are white, I can’t resist buying sets of other salad/dessert plates & layering on the table. I watch out for transferware in any color & also blue/white Willow pattern & LOVE the green cabbage leaf plates that come from Portugal or Italy. Changing things up on the table is lots of fun!

  20. As always, i love EVERYTHING you set your hand to. You have inspired me beyond measure. You should’ve SEEN my Thanksgiving table and dessert bar. All because of YOU. Thank you for being such great teacher.
That being said, is there any chance you have the name of the dishes that have the crown on them? They are wavy and have dots on the edges. It’s cyber Monday and a great day to BUY!
    Thanks for everything,
    Rita

  21. Love the beautiful white dishes! Have you any idea where I might find a set to purchase for myself?

    1. Dottie, there are so many places to buy white dishes! Most stores carry them. Also look at HomeGoods, TJ Maxx and other discount stores.

  28. Where did you get the first plate?

    1. Hi Jackie,
The plates in the cady are all from HomeGoods. Hope this helps!

      1. I never find pretty plates like this at HomeGoods. I look every stinkin’ time I am in there. I want them so bad!

  29. Teresa Evans says:

Yvonne, I love your blog and this post is beautiful! Do u have a photo showing the entire tabletop?

    1. If you google “stonegable tablescapes” or “stonegable tables” you will see lots of examples of the entire table.

  30. I love this post! Recently, I actually used Pinterest inspiration to build myself a chippy distressed chalk painted box long rectangle wood box to hold a pretty set of Vintage China. I have china sets in my china cabinet, but this particular pretty floral vintage set I thrifted, then added a few missing pieces off ebay and I use it frequently for everyday sometimes. I wanted it out on display and within easy reach. The long narrow China Boxes do that beautifully as your post shows. I absolutely DO use all my Beautiful China sets. They are not in my house just on display. It’s just that, for example, my Mother’s vintage Castleton China set she purchased a piece at a time in New York City where she stayed alone while Daddy served overseas in WWII is used for big Easter Family dinners. I chose Easter because my Mother was born on an Easter Sunday in 1914, and passed in 2011. i couldn’t risk that set using it everyday. In the last couple of years I was finally able to complete that Castleton pattern in her memory when the pattern finally began to show up on Ebay or Replacements Ltd coming in finally from Estates. It took me 40 years of searching and watching to finally complete the Set for some missing pieces, and so it has great sentimental value as you can imagine. I only wish I could have found the pieces before she passed like I tried so hard to do. There just was never any of her pattern to be found, not until around 2020 as the pattern was discontinued in 1972 I found out in my Internet searching. Isn’t this whole Internet thing great for stuff like that? 🙂 I do not need more dish sets, but I am currently looking at some gorgeous all white, fancy bordered all white sets on Mother’s Day sales. I need to change out my everyday dishes, and all white is what I have decided they will be. Thank you so much for your beautiful post here on beautiful white dish sets, and I have followed your provided link to follow you on Pinterest now. Thank you for all the inspiration in this post, Sammie
