WHAT IS DOXOLOGY?

WHAT IS DOXOLOGY- Doxology is something we need to relate to God

I became a true believing Christian at the age of 33. I’m know exactly what I was saved from! I was a whole lot different then. An I would never want to go back… for anything! And because of that I am truly grateful. Deep-into-my-bones grateful. I am in awe of God’s work in my life and just how much better my life is since Jesus became my Lord! Just thinking about it always brings tears to my eyes and praise to my lips. So with that praise on my lips… let’s talk about Doxology!

The word Doxology is probably familiar to you if you are a Christian. It’s one of those words that we kinda know… but do we really understand what a doxology is? And knowing this can really make a difference in the way we walk with the Lord.

Doxology is derived from two Greek words. Doxa which means GLORY and LOGOS which means word, or to say. Doxology means GLORY SPEAKS! In other words, speaking about God. Isn’t that beautiful! Now to go a little deeper, it is the glory of God we are speaking!

How do I know this?

I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols. Isaiah 42:8

God is the only One worth Glory! The bible is full of verses that speak of God’s glory.

Now that we know that Doxology means GLORY SPEAKS we need to be sure we know what GLORY means. I love this word! Glory is the Hebrew word that carries with it the idea of weight! It’s the idea that if we could measure or weigh all that God is that would be His Glory.  His glory is unmeasurable, unfathomable. But it’s important to speak of God’s glory!

We see Doxologies all through the scripture. I particularly love Paul’s God inspired writings.

Often times when Paul is relaying a message of great spiritual importance or a thought about the goodness of God and salvation he breaks out in a doxology.  As if he can’t contain himself! He just has to give thanksgiving and praise and GOD SPEAK!

I’m studying Romans right now and there is one particular doxology I love!

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor? Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?

For from him and through him and for him are all things.

To him be the glory forever! Amen. Romans 11: 33-36

It’s almost like Paul stopped midstream in his inspired thought in Romans 11 and just had to break out in a declaration of the weight of God’s blessings to all humanity! It’s was a compulsion… a beautiful compulsion! Just like the word of God says…

“From the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45

Paul’s heart was overflowing with the knowledge of God’s glory and it came right out of his mouth!!!

Doxology is all about Thanksgiving! It’s about seeing, perceiving, hearing and sensing God’s character in us and around us and speaking of it!  It’s about not holding back the truth of how God deals with us. It’s about giving God’s character, all that He, voice!

It can be personal or shared.

George Herbert, a 14th century poet, orator and priest wrote:

“Thou that has given so much to me give me one more thing, a grateful heart. Not grateful when it pleases me, as if Thy blessings had some spare days. But such a heart who’s heart may be Thy praise. And that is it. A heart that beats, and with every beat there is a response of praise.”

Doxology should not be thought of as some big formal thing saved only for church. Doxology should be the way we speak of God every day… with every heartbeat!

Let’s join with all of heaven in their ongoing doxology! And let’s not forget to “God speak” about the one thing the angels have not experienced… SALVATION. That is our song… our unique experience. We are the only ones in all creation that can give this doxology from a personal and intimate perspective.

Today, speak out your own doxology to the Lord!

Oh, Lord I am overcome when I think of the cost of my salvation. That Jesus’ precious blood was spilled on my behalf so you could take me, the gravest of sinners, and turn me into a saint. Thank you Lord that you came after me like a loving father going after a wayward child. I praise you for collecting me up into your eternal arms and holding me safe. Thanks you for your mercy, goodness, grace and ongoing love! May you be lifted up! Amen!

  1. I’m at the beach so this is part of my “worship” and quiet time today. Thank you! God did “come after me like a wayward child”. Praises for grace and mercy!

  2. My Dad,a minister, use to sing the Doxology as grace before meals sometimes. I will forever remember him for that. Last for Christmas I received a large sign to hang over my kitchen door that says “Praise God from whom all blessings flow”. It reminds me to be thankful and remember my sweet Daddy.

Thank you so much Yvonne for your meaning of the word Doxology. I have sung that hymn for over 85 years ..usually after offering , but never thought about the where of hymn or the meaning. Now I know both.I thought you would be interested in the “where” of the hymn . I am enclosing a website I found awhile ago telling where the hymn originated. I look forward to your Sunday posts..and of course the weekly ones also. Jere

Isn’t God so good and worthy to be praised? And blessed? And sung to and about? And talked about? And written about yet I can not measure up to all that He is for He is so much more. My brain cannot take it all in. But God understands and tells me…Come unto me ….Let the little children come unto Me…So in my broken brain God lets me go back to my childhood when we broke out in the Doxology every single Sunday. With great joy it was played and we stood as we sang Sunday after Sunday from birth ( no nurseries!) until my mid thirties when it was considered old fashioned. So THIS day I sing anew Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all creatures here below Praise Him above all heavenly host. praise Father Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. Thank you for your lesson on Doxology. I am blessed.

  23. Joan Miles says:

  25. Yvonne! I’ve just recently started receiving your emails … and I’m just now catching up after a trip!
How beautiful to know the full meaning of the Doxology we’ve been singing in Church for oh so many years, mostly after offerings … You are an inspiration in many ways, and I’m touched to also learn that you are led by our Lord to spread His Word to many in this special, far-reaching forum you have. I have enjoyed your talents, loved your style, on many occasions along the way, and finally decided I must have daily “fixes” from you! Now I am especially secure in the knowledge that I made a *very wise choice* … Thank you! Kathleen

  26. Amen!!!Beautifully put.So need to read this than you.
    Have a Blessed day

  27. The Doxology has a special meaning for me. While I was going through radiation treatments for breast cancer I tried to think of something to take my mind off of the experience. I realized if I sang the Doxology to myself it lasted the perfect amount of time. As I sang “Amen” it was all over!!! What a sweet gift from the Lord to comfort me. I don’t think I have ever felt closer to the Lord than while I was on that table. It’s an experience I will never forget.

  28. Debbie L. says:

Yvonne, I just marvel at your beautiful words and praise of our Lord and Savior!

You are truly a Proverbs: 31 woman of God 🙂
Thank you dear one for shining your light and blessing us this Sunday!

  29. Linda Rodgers says:

Our extended family (18 first cousins!) usually sang The Doxology when we gathered for holidays. Because it holds such special memories of our rural Jesus believing family, I had the four verses painted beneath the crown molding of our dining room. I enjoyed your article. Thanks! (Any suggestions for how I can share a picture of my “Doxology” dining room?)

I love this but can’t find the link to print.

  31. The link in my email today takes me back to last Sunday’s post on the Doxology….not the one for the chalkboard printable. Thanks for including a link to it in an email above. Love your Sunday posts!

I am so happy my blogger daughter-in-law (hotpl8zandtablescapes.com) introduced me to you and StoneGable. She has talked about you for a long time and now since I am living with her while my house is rebuilt after a lightening hit and fire, I have enjoyed your blog so much. I love that you are a Christian and include scriptures and God in everything. I know God has plans for me as I was only 10 feet away from the hole in my ceiling made by the direct hit. You are a blessing to everyone that goes to your post and reads your Sunday Scripture. You are my inspiration as I rebuild and redecorate my home using so many of your great ideas. I have always had cobalt blue and white with the cottage look, but now I plan to use more of the neutrals too. God bless.

    1. So happy to hear you are safe and rebuilding. God bless you new home!

  33. Carla Mischel says:

Students at our Catholic school sing this twice a week to close out our Morning Assemblies. To hear the voices of children praising our Lord is spectacular!
