WHAT IS DOXOLOGY? YOU WILL BE SO SURPRISED!

WHAT IS DOXOLOGY- a surprising word-stonegableblog.com

I am all about knowing what words really mean… especially when it comes to words Christians use often. Words like glory, amen, hallelujah, faith and so on! Today let’s talk about a wonderful word full and rich with meaning… DOXOLOGY.  Many of us have heard this word and have some obscure idea of what it means. I think you will love its meaning and be so surprised!

The word doxology is a greek word that is made up of the word doxa which means honor or glory and logia which means language or speak. So doxology means “glory speak”. Isn’t that beautiful? Now, what is “glory speak”? This is an easy one… it is talking about and speaking of God’s glory.

What a great honor it is for us to speak about the glory of God!

Here’s an example of a doxology from the bible…

NOW TO HIM WHO IS ABLE TO DO FAR MORE ABUNDANTLY BEYOND ALL WE CAN ASK OR THINK, ACCORDING TO THE POWER THAT WORKS WITHIN US, TO HIM BE THE GLORY IN THE CHURCH AND IN JESUS CHRIST TO ALL GENERATIONS FOREVER AND EVER, AMEN.  Ephesians 3:20-21

These verses are speaking about God’s glory!

Here’s what this beautiful doxology says in todays language…

Now, to God who has dunamai (Greek word for power, sounds like dynamite) inherent ability and power and has a continual supply of it to do incredible great deeds that no one can ever measure or imagine on behalf of his children (those who trust Jesus for their salvation)…

According to the Holy Spirt that work in us…
To God be ascribe His total worth and all the greatness of everything He is in all who are disciples and in relationship with Jesus Christ…

For all people at all times forever and ever. So be it because it is the truth!

NOW THIS IS GLORY SPEAKS!!!

So, when you say a doxology at church or read one in the bible say it with all your heart and speak out about all of God’s fabulous character and unmatched worth! Know what you are saying and what a privilege it is to speak out about what God has done for you and what He means to you!

Amen and amen!

  23. I discovered blogs and started reading them about a year ago. I missed the decorating and craft shows on HGTV and was happy to find blogs as a substitute. But to my delight I have found so many sweet Christian ladies who not only share decorating and craft tips, but easily share their faith too. I feel like I have added so many like-minded friends. Thank you for being one of them. For Christmas I received a board painted by Dear Lillie that says “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow”. It hangs over my kitchen door.

  24. The meaning is encouraging and beautiful. Now to God who has a contintinual supply of power to do incredible great deeds that we could never imagine or measure on behalf of His children. These words bring great comfort and joy to our hearts.

  34. Thank you for this ‘glory speak’ explanation!

  35. Tremendous! I too love to dig deep into Biblical terms and study connections, in fact on my Facebook page I call myself a minor of God’s Word! Love this doxological ‘Sunday Scripture”! What brought me here was that for several weeks I have been contemplating the term ‘glory’ and noted that the Hebrew Word was “doxa”, which refers to ‘as very apparent’. Just now I looked up the ‘doxa’ again and thought of ‘doxology’. Of course, the term doxology is not in The Bible, but I did know of the doxology at the end of Jude, so I did this internet search for the meaning of the term and ergo, I found this Sunday Scripture post! So glad I did, thx!

    1. Sorry, I spelled miner wrong! Lol, although with everything God offers in His Word, I am indeed a ‘minor’ as well. Moreover, I believe that most of our time in heaven will be spent in ‘Glory Speak’ as you say and in unpacking The Complete Fullness of God and His Words…this will take eternity!!

  36. Is it OK to say one of the Doxology after praying with your family at night? It seems like a great way to end the night.
