HOW TO CREATE A TRANSITIONAL VIGNETTE- Creating a look to last from season to season! stonegableblog.com

Can we all say VIGNETTE together? Yes, this is one of the sweetest decor words in the dictionary. Vignettes add detail. Vignettes add sparkle and life. Vignette add so much interest and beauty to a room! Think of them as your personal decor stamp! And they are so easy to create!!!! It’s time to create a coffee table vignette that will transition from now until Thanksgiving! Really…and with very little change up involved! Transitional is another word I just love!!!! Going from one season to another. Let’s get started and create a BEAUTIFUL transitional vignette!

We are going to create a vignette that can last for months! Although we still have a bit of this summer season left it’s the perfect time to think forward to fall because it will be here before we know it! So how about an easy vignette with lots of decor value for right now and one that will work in the coming months too.

For our transitional vignette we are going to think big, beautiful elements that can work from season to season! I started with my very favorite crate that I use as a tray!

I found the big Cudahay Packing crate at a vintage barn market and knew it had to come home with me. I covered the unfinished bottom of the crate with a typewriter key burlap from JoAnne Fabrics. To see how to make an old crate into a chic covered tray click HERE.

Keeping it neutral was my goal! You can decide the best color for you to use now that will also transition well. My tip is to keep your colors “tight”. Keeping your colors to only two or three will help your vignette be more easy to transition.

I pulled a big urn from my hutch to fill with PeeGee hydrangeas! Oh, these are such pretty hydrangeas. They are just now blooming in my area so I’ll have blooms into fall!

This vase will work transitioning from one season to the next. In the fall it will be brimming with Autumn-stained leaves and  textured branches! The white against the fall colors will make them stand out!

I used burlap covered books as risers in this vignette. It’s one of my best, go-to tips for adding height. It’s so easy to cover old books with burlap… and I’ve figured out a way that they are still readable! Click HERE for a burlap covered book DIY.

These books add texture now and will look fabulous in the upcoming months! Fall and burlap were made for each other!

Two rectangle glass containers hold corks… love the smooth glass and the texture of the cork! In the fall I’m thinking about filling them with acorns! Save those corks… they are quirky, free fillers!

Did you notice the S and G block letters. They are backwards because they are typeset letters! They play off the typewriter burlap crate bottom and will look warm and fun in the fall too!

There is just a ton of texture in this part of the vignette. The neutral color keeps it from being overwhelming!

Moving to the other side of the vignette…

I love love love this fun architectural orb. It is a dark oil-rubbed bronze. The orb is a big element that takes up lots of visual space without being heavy!!!

If you want to update your look, grab one of these! They are quite inexpensive and add a fun trendy element to a vignette. I got mine at Luckett’s Spring Market. I’ve seen them at West Elm too.

This orb looks great in my summer vignette, but it was made for the warmth of a fall vignette! Just wait!!!

On the burlap book risers in back of the orb are 2 DIY candlesticks with white candles. I found these awesome looking chippy pillar pieces from a home and knew they would make some fun, funky, chippy candlesticks! I fashioned the bowl part of the candlesticks and used some burlap in the design to tie it into the books.

The white candles mirror the white bases and give the candlesticks an airy look for late summer. For the coming months I am thinking of using birch covered candlesticks for an earthy fall look.

It’s about adding subtle touches of the season to the decor we already have. It’s light handed decorating. So much easier and so much more attractive!

  3. Love your beautiful vignettes (love that word too) Yvonne….I adore each and every one of them for each season and occasion. Have a great Monday!

  4. Karen VanLoo says:

Oh your vignettes are my favorite things, along with tablescapes! This one is beautiful, I love all of the different elements and textures. That tray is the bomb diggity! So versatile, you sure scored a winner when you found it. I am trying very hard to be patient and enjoy the end of summer, August isn’t my favorite time of year because it’s miserably hot outside, so I dream of Fall and am already starting some fall crafting. This vignette is just what I needed to inspire me to hang on to summer just a little longer. Beautiful! God bless you!

  5. Yvonne, your words of wisdom and advice on colour, texture, and form are all welcomed reminders of the elements of design. Your photographs beautifully portray your points. You are a fantastic teacher!

Over the years that I have been following you, I have admired your aprons hanging on your unique hooks.

I think I recall you were going to do a DYI on creating them, or suggest where we could locate them. Did I miss that/those posts?

My DIL adores aprons (her mother always wears one…mine did not!) and I would love to give her one for her birthday in early October.

Are you able to help me out?

    Susan

      1. Congratulations on your book!!
Will it be published before October? Might you email me where to buy an apron hanger retail?

  6. Bj Russell says:

I’ve always told my girlfriends that I wished HGTV had shows on how to decorate a coffee table or an end table. So glad I found you!

  7. Not meaning to offend but coffee is spelled incorrectly in the header.

  8. Yvonne,
    Gorgeous vignette, dear friend!!!
I adore the “transitional” explanation to the change of Seasons!!!
You have brought to my mind, my years in retail with this post!!!
I remember “transitioning” Christmas Trees into the displays in September.
What a “breeze” it was to add the Christmas decor and ornaments come mid~November!!!
I, too, will begin to “transition” my cabinets and vignettes from Summer to Autumn this week!!!
Our forecast is for “raining” days. . .and a change of decor sounds like a “perfect” blend to me!!!
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead, dear one!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  9. Gorgeous as ever. I can’t wait to see how you made the candlesticks:-)

  10. Linda Ann says:

Love your vignettes and especially love your crate! I’ll be heading out to Lancaster county this week with my friend for our annual “girls trip” and am hoping to find a nice crate for my dining room table! I just can’t find those wonderful home items anywhere but out there! Will be looking for some fabrics to decorate with too! Thanks for all the inspiration!!

  11. Great ideas! I had to laugh when you mentioned filling your glass containers with acorns in the fall though. I love acorns and one year picked a whole bunch of pretty ones to display in a bowl. Little worms came crawling out of them and it didn’t look so pretty then. Just be on the lookout for acorns that have tiny little holes!

    1. OH NO!!! If you “bake” them in a 200 degree oven for 2-3 hours. That will remove any pests!

      1. Thanks! Good to know. I will be including acorns in my vignette this fall.

  12. Yvonne!

It’s so pretty! I love the typewriter keys burlap! You go friend!

    Happy day!

  14. Beautiful table design. As I’ve said before, no one does it better. Can’t wait to see your book!

  15. Hi Linda, it all really is more about the size of your tray and what will fit.

  16. When I come home from work and check my personal emails, I smile when I have one from Yvonne. So nice to escape to your beautiful site and be “around” people who appreciate the beauty of what you do and their own surroundings. Thank you. You made my day, again!

  17. I like the vignette that spans the seasons. Very nice!
    Best,
    Michelle from simplysantabarbara.blogspot.com

  18. Lovely! I’m looking forward to watching this evolve as the seasons progress. I love all the detail you show in your pictures..just the things I would want to appreciate up close, but, I keep wanting to take a step back and see the whole thing in all it’s glory. Sort of a ‘first impression’ kind of thing. I’m not trying to be picky, just a personal quirk. 🙂 thank you for sharing your time, home and expertise. I love your blog!

  19. I just recently found YOU…LOVE everything you share and your expertise!! I love to decorate, Diy, paint, stencil…and you inspire..thank you, Kathy from Kansas

  20. Hi Yvonne: while I’ve been following you for a good year or more now, I somehow missed the “Transitional Vignette” post. Since storage is an issue now that I’m no longer in a house with a basement but in a condo, I don’t have the luxury of the vast decor storage I once had. I really appreciated this timely and practical post!

  21. Beautiful hydrangeas! Looking forward to the candlestick DIY post:)

  22. Linda Charlton says:

Your style is so my style if I could just pull it off.I haven’t seen one of your ideas I didn’t love.Maybe it’s because we only live 2 hrs away from each other. PA style!

  23. Portia Read says:

    Hi Yvonne,
Just reading about the fun transitional vignettes. Are you using a real boxwood sphere in your new pared down fall arrangement?
    Thanks for all your insights.

  24. Thank you again for the many insights to change of seasons, texture and problem solving! I don’t celebrate Halloween, but enjoy the day as I welcome my sweet pilgrim figurines and beloved turkeys….especially the plates! Blessings to you Yvonne!

Great tips for winter decor. I love your posts for every season! Your home is beautiful!

  26. I am new to your site. Am loving everything so far! Would you be open to sharing the paint color of the walls in your house? Its such a great neutral, I’d love to know what it is. Many thanks!
