HAPPY SUMMER! There are many things I love about summer… long evenings, lightening bugs in the back yard, days at the pool, garden flowers and warm breezes to name a few. But when the temps soar and the humidity is thick summer sleeping can be a challenge even with air conditioning! Here are some super tips for keeping cool all summer night long!
Today on Decorating Tips And Tricks we are talking about 9 WAYS TO FRESHEN UP YOUR FAMILY ROOM. This might be one area in your home that has lots of use and traffic and could use a little help! Today we have that for you!
Listen below:
Let’s dress our beds and rooms and even ourselves for sweet dreaming summer nights!
Dressing for summer nights means light pajamas and layers. I tend to want breathable natural fabrics when looking for summer pj’s. My favorite sleep attire is cotton capris style bottom and a white cotton top with 3/4 length sleeves. They are comfortable and look nice to lounge in too!
I can even have coffee on the porch and no one knows I’m in my pajamas!
Summer is all about feeling cool and comfortable!
It’s surprising that many people do not change their bedding when the warmer weather rolls around! It makes such a huge difference in sleep quality!
Let’s start with the foundation. Sheets are one of the items in our homes that are worth investing in! The average person spends 22 years in bed in a lifetime! And we sleep enveloped between sheets! Don’t you think we deserve to sleep in beautiful comfort!
For summer, linen is the best choice for a sheet! It is lofty and breathable and just so so beautiful. Its natural fibers are moisture wicking and will keep us covered but cool!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these gorgeous linen sheets from Saphyr Pure Linen! And I am very fussy about sheets! If you give linen sheets a try you will be a quick convert! I sure was!
The raw edges are beautifully crafted and are a giveaway that the sheets are of fine linen! And the wrinkles… just part of the beauty! The more you wash SaphyrPure Linen sheets the softer they become!
Natural fiber sheets should be paired with a light natural fiber blanket. Nothing heavy. I only put one on a bed and stow another in a closet if guests get chilly. We are warm bodies so one very light blanket works for Bobby and me!
Linen blankets are my summer favorite! Like linen sheets, they are super soft and fluffy and a joy to sleep under! And they often have raw edges too!
A white coverlet works beautifully as a summer bedspread. But lately, I’ve been taking the duvet out of my duvet covers and using them sans the hot duvet as a coverlet! Genius, right? And the duvet cover is the perfect weight too! This summer I found this gorgeous blue and white duvet cover on sale! It works as a pretty bedspread!
Give it a try for a new look and a light feel!
A must-have in the bedrooms at StoneGable are fans even though we have air conditioning! Fans work amazingly well to circulate the air and as white noise. We don’t have ceiling fans so we keep small fans in every bedroom closet. And we use ours ever night!
Another way to revel in the beauty of summer and to fill the air with sweet aromas is to use a diffuser! My favorite scents to diffuse in the summer are lavender, lemongrass, mint and tangerine.
Don’t forget the flowers! I think a small bouquet of summer flowers is such a pretty way to bring the outdoors in. And we often forget about adding flowers to a bedroom! Why not add a few herbs like mint, marjoram, or basil to your bouquet.
Treat yourself!
Make your bed and room a refuge during hot summer nights by investing in summer-friendly bedding and some prettily scented items!
Sweet summer dreams!

I love the Dot range. The dots are hip and will brighten any room and the white fitted sheet can be used with other linens, so very multi-purpose.
Living in the Low Country of South Carolina, I go along with Georgia having lots of hot days/nights. My Dad family is in Georgia. I don’t have linen sheets, would love to, but do have 100% cotton sheets that are “ancient”. I also have what my grandmother called “summer blankets”. They are very, very thin ( think because they belonged to my great grandmother) that are just perfect, if the night gets to be too cool. Since Mama and Nana always changed bed “clothes”, curtains etc. with the seasons, I do the same…lol…nothing like carrying on a tradition, is there. Maybe one of these days, I’ll have saved enough money for linen sheets. Until then, cotton is great.
Not sure if anyone mentioned… but many of these suggestions are GREAT options for those going through midlife hotflashes. 😉 Even diffusing oils would probably give the body a sense of ‘calm’ during those hormonal storms. 🙂 I’m thankful that I have not had this particular issue, but I let my sister know about the sheets, Yvonne.
I love the idea of using the duvet cover without the duvet during warmer weather. What a great idea!
Have never slept on linen sheets, they would be wonderful for our hot Florida summers.
Love the room!
I change my rooms seasonally as well. I love changing things out. In the winter months I have a plaid flannel duvet and shams, and change out candles and a few other things for that look. In the spring/summer I use white and turquoise. It’s so light and fresh after the Montana winters.
A couple of years ago, I also had the idea to just use the duvet for a bedspread. I get pretty excited when I have a good idea! It’s a keeper!
What a beautiful bedroom.
Yvonne, the linens in your Guest Bedroom are beautiful! Thanks, so much, for sharing with us! Also, thanks for the link to the Saphyr French Linen sheets! I just love the look of these! They are absolutely beautiful! Just love how they have done the edge!
I’m going to order a set for our King size bed in our Master Bedroom. These sheets are definitely a “luxury” — and an investment!
Yvonne
I’m interested in the new essential oil defussers. Is this what you use.
How do they work?
I have that same duvet cover!!! I love fresh flowers in any room.
Don’t you love it?
Well I reckon I’m going to have to get some linen sheets. If they are half as wonderful as the bedspreads then they will be beyond wonderful. Thanks for the heads up
Very pretty bed …I’ve never tried the linen sheets. Normally just have a cotton sheet and two fans on !
I slept on linen sheets last night. LOVE!
Love the white and blue duvet and I do too change the linens at summer time. Also I want to tell you that I just listened the post about “shades of gray” love it and I you girls made me laugh so hard specially when they teased you…
We have so so much fun together!
Lovely photos and post Yvonne. I do change to summer linens. I even give our sweet Izzy summer comfort with a lightweight cotton sheet that keeps him cool.I’m a personal furnace year round so we also have a air conditioner in our master bedroom. But, that means hubby wears pjs to bed ( wink) so he doesn’t freeze with the arctic temps. giggle. Hugs P.S> I invite you to share your post at my TFT party ( you can link up and share until midnight on Saturday)
I’m a furnace too!
Lovely room.
Don’t think I could get used to linen sheets either. 100% cotton percale for me! Altho hard to find because they aren’t as cool and soft as years ago. We use only a top sheet in summer, no blanket at all!
Debbie, I bet you would be surprised!
I’m a furnace too!
As always, you post about something I was recently viewing. I was looking at alternate sheets for a guest room and saw linen sheets. But I did not know anyone who had tried them!! Thank you for the tip!!
Gwen try them yourself. On second thought, they might never make it to your guest room.
I just ordered a set of those sheets for mine and Mr. OrganizedandSimplified’s bed. I cannot wait to try them! And, if you don’t mind my asking, where’d you find that lovely duvet cover? I really like those colors.
Hi Angela, The duvet cover came from the Pottery Barn outlet!
For years we have used 100% cotton sheets in warmer weather then switch to 100% cotton flannel sheets during cooler weather.
Love the linen idea. We recently moved from Canada to Australia and although it’s winter here now, I’ll keep an eye out for linen sheets. I think it’s exactly what we’ll need when summer rolls around here. Thanks!
OOPS-just noticed I meant to spell clothes and not close.
Lovely spread and linens. I’ve always purchased cotton they tend to be cooler and so fresh if laundered correctly. Going down memory lane, I remember my sweet Mother hanging sheets and pillow cases outside on her close line blowing in the summer breeze. She purchased all white and had some with flowers. Mother ironed on those little transfer stencils and then embroidered such lovely designs. I would iron the pillow cases and my father’s handkerchiefs, those were the days.
I too have those memories and they are so sweet. I still have some of the embroidered pillowcases. Remember the little bottle with the sprinkling top on it because we didn’t have steam irons back in the day? Thanks for the memory!
Yes I do remember and also Mother would starch my Daddy’s shirts, roll them up and put in the refrigerator. I still have some cup towels that are embroidered with the days of the week and crocheted around the edges of the towel. Love you comments, thank you.
My grandmother did that. Wow, what a precious memory!
great ideas for summer sleeping! ..and the empty duvet cover is a genius idea! thanks
Thank you for this post. We will be moving in our new home once it is completed and these ideas will help me so much! I never thought of using just the duvet without the insert. Lovely room and bedding.
Yvonne, I feel cooler already! Lol….
Beautiful!
I love the look of the linen bed sheets and covers. I looked on line and they are really pricey for my budget though. I’m actually quite picky with sheets myself and try to buy 100% Egyptian cotton sets when they are on sale.
Wow! What wonderful ideas! This is one area where I am not strong in! You make a bedroom so very inviting! Thanks for the helpful tips!
I love that duvet cover. I live in the southwest so I definitely need light bedding!
Linen sheets would work perfectly for you!
Wow, those linen sheets are just beautiful! I don’t really change out anything during the season except my blanket. I purchased a “cooler” summer blanket for our warm months (well I should say HOT since I live in Texas) and I have a thicker blanket for cooler months. I should start saving and buy some of those sheets, I would imagine they’re just fabulous!
New to me…linen bedding…thanks so much for elaborating ! My high thread count sheets are almost “heavy” feeling this summer! Why is this so difficult to “get right”?
Yes, I find them heavy too!
Hi Yvonne, I’m thinking about trying the top linen sheet first and see how I like them. As always your room is beautiful.
Love the linen bedding and what a comfy, welcoming room! Where did you find you linen blanket and do you have a favorite brand of bed pillows? I have tried all price ranges and i have yet to find a bed pillow i love that last any length of time. Some don’t even last a few months. Anyone have any favorites? Thanks for all your wonderful posts!
We love our My Pillows! Use to have a stiff neck when I wake up…no longer.
Look on Etsy for the linen blanket and pillows are a very personal thing. My bed pillow is just about ready for a change!
Great post. I think I’ll try the linen pillowcases before buying a complete set.
I LOVE linens. I collect and sell them on ebay. We do change our sheets with the season and go from heavy cotton flannel sheets from Portugal, to lovely smooth cotton Sferra sheets from Italy in the spring. It does make a difference. I would LOVE to have some of these beauties! Great idea of the summer duvet, too! The duvet cover is beautiful! What brand is it?
I found it at my local Pottery Barn outlet.
Good morning! I enjoyed this post and it brought some good memories to me. When I was a kid, about 60 years ago) my Gram used muslin sheets on our beds. As time went by, and many washings, they were the softest sheets I ever slept on. I remember moving my leg across the sheets just to feel the joy of them. Now I settle for cotton and have been happy with them. I checked out Susan B’s Boll & Branch and saved that site, good one. I also have at least four different sets for my full size bed that I change often. In summer I love the look of a vintage white chenille bedspread I found in perfect condition in an antique shop, only $60! I use white sheets and flowered pillowcases for a summery look. Makes me feel cool and comfy just getting into bed. I suggest to use what you have and come up with different looks. Thanks, Yvonne!
I would have to iron the pillowcase and the top of the cover sheet. That’s okay – I love to iron. It’s becoming a dying art.
Me, too. I thought the same thing. I love to iron also. The finished linens look amazing!
Maureen and Carol, please come to StoneGable and you are welcome to iron here!
Thank you for your post today Yvonne. I completely agree that good sheets are an investment, and very worth the money. When I married a few years ago, I decided to invest in sheets for our master bedroom. I heard about a new company called Boll & Branch. Their cotton sheets are fabulous and they are very good to their employees. You can read their story on their webpage. The sheets came in a beautifully wrapped box – it was like receiving a gift!!!! I’ve never regretted the purchase. We only use them in the summer months. I wash them and put them back on the bed the same day. Peaceful dreams to everyone!
If you like them then you should definitely try Saphyr French linen sheets!
Good morning Yvonne, I love your lovely bedroom. I change our bedding seasonally also from warm quilts in winter to lighter weight bedding for summer. I invested in a set of sheets that are made of Bamboo and Polyester blend, they wash up nicely and are nice for summer sleeping. Thanks for all the tips today.
Ooops I mean I’ve never tried linen sheets … that’s about to change.
I love linen but have tried linen sheets … I’m going to now, though!!
I would love to know where you buy your cotton capris and night shirts. I need some new pajamas.
I buy my pj capris at stores like Target, Macy’s, JC Penney etc. I love a soft white top so Land’s End is my choice!
Love love this idea using the duvet cover as a coverlet. So cool😊😊
I wear pajamas that you would not know that I am wearing pajamas.
Your bedroom looks so comfy and cozy. Thanks for sharing all your wonderful ideas and tips. Yes linen sheets are expensive but well worth the investment. One set is all you need, who will know? Have a wonderful day!
Thank you Yvonne for these ideas. I am going to check the linen sheets out. I love the light colors for the summer.
I’m so much a southern girl that I will be a hard sell. I’m devoted to my fresh off the line, cotton percale sheets, for the coolest summer nights sleep.
Candace, I agree with you, nothing like crisp cool percale sheets on a hot summer night, I could not handle the wrinkles and raw edge son the linen sheets.
Jean, they wrinkles are really beautiful and so are the raw edges.
Great ideas! I had never heard of linen sheets!!!! I’m on it! Thanks Yvonne!
I find linen a bit itchy and will need to be convinced that the sheets are soft.
Linen sheets have a soft feel, Harriet!
Love the duvet. It looks so summery and light on the bed. Also love the fresh flowers. That always cheers me up.
Lovely linens and duvet is gorgeous!
Yvonne, Great tips. Good sheets really are an investment as they are usually quite pricey, and most feel they can’t afford them. But sometimes when you think about other things you spend little money on but frequently (that cup of coffee at Starbucks), if you just skipped those and saved it would be easy to purchase something a little higher quality and what’s better than a good nights sleep?
I never thought about taking the down inserts out of my duvets and just using the cover as a coverlet for summer. Might be changing up the beds this weekend.
Agree with Suzi at the cost plus I am not sure I would like linen. May start with just two pillow cases to see how it goes.
Great idea, Carol.
Love the duvet and shams…I am going to try the duvet sans comforter. Brilliant Yvonne!
So pretty! Love the blue design on the bed linens!
Beautiful bedding….however unless your very well off, who could afford it? I could never be lucky enough to own such luxurious linens! I just went to their website and was shocked at the prices…investment I guess? You are blessed 😇
Yes Suzi I agree they can be very expensive. When we moved into tour new house about 3 years ago I wanted to buy linen for our master bedroom and then, like you, saw the prices and had sticker shock!! So they went on my wish list and I saved up for months and months and then my wonderful husband gave me a gift card as my Christmas present to complete the purchase. I have used the one set on my bed during the hot months (and there are lots of them here in GA.) Every day -when I wash them they go back on my bed that same day. So I guess I have gotten my money’s worth and they just keep getting better and better. If you look around the internet you can find some less expensive ones too. Maybe even start with just the top sheet and build a set over time.
I do the same thing. Yes, they are an investment but one soooooo worth saving for. Like you Marilyn, I wash and put my sheets back on my bed.
Just a word of caution. You really should buy a fabulous quality linen sheet because there is a difference in quality. These French linen sheets are amazing!
Great ideas – love the fresh flower idea.
I love the bedspread! Can you share where you found it?
Hi Tina,
I found the duvet cover at my local Pottery Barn outlet.
Good morning, Yvonne. Yes, I change bed sheets and covers for the seasons. Always something light and pretty for late spring and summer. I love the blue and white cover! Also, the neat headboard! What a pretty guest room!
I do love a good linen sheet. I agree with changing up linens for the summer. Love all the fresh flowers. So pretty.
Love your look! My husband and I were just saying how tonight, after a busy week, we would change mattresses from one room to another and get new sheets! These are an option. thanks for the beautiful post this morning!
I change linens seasonally
