OPEN SHELVES IN THE BREAKFAST ROOM

OPEN SHELVES IN THE BREAKFAST ROOM.

We’ve been busy here at StoneGable building a wood planked wall in the breakfast room and creating open shelving! What fun! I’ve been so excited to share this project with you because it’s not too difficult to make and it gives the “back” part of my home a whole new look! Here’s the open shelves REVEAL~

The wall that our bar sit against has undergone quite a change. We replace a large black mirror and pictures with open shelves!

I originally wanted to display only white dishes on the shelves, but they looked too stark and bor-ing. So I added some green organics, browns and blacks. Also galvanized metal, a tad of silver and nubby brown texture from a basket and willow balls. Now the shelves have more life and a ton of interest.  Limiting the colors keeps these filled shelves from looking overly busy!

Here’s a good picture of the planking, the brackets and the walnut stained boards. I’m such a fan of whites and dark wood. It’s the contract that I find so appealing!

I’m thinking of covering my cookbooks with burlap.

Don’t you love the little dog silhouettes? One is of Bear and one is of Beau! I call them my grand dogs! My friend Sue makes and sells these. She can do almost any kind of silhouette!

Late fall into Christmas is a great time to use pinecones.

  1. I’m planning the same thing! I have a buffet that I want shelves over it. I am just waiting on hubby to make them!

Love the open shelving, Yvonne! What a beautiful display. I also love dog silhouettes, I need a Golden Retriever! You also just gave me some ideas for two shelves I already have in my kitchen. Thank you, as always, for the beautiful inspiration. Have a blessed day!

    1. No my friend does not have an etsy shop. If you are interested I can ask her if she would make them and send them.

I am interested in a St.Bernard silhouette by your friend Sue!
        Blessings!

      2. Good morning~Love my dogs, love your silhouettes! I too would be interested in them. Anxiously waiting to hear. Enjoy your blog so much!

  4. Love it….you are living my dream, stone house and all….

  5. We added rustic shelves in our kitchen this past summer, and I love them. The wood we used is over 150 years old can came from an old stagecoach inn. You great accessories have given me some decorating ideas.

  6. Your extra touches do give the white a little extra pizzazz. Open shelving is such a nice touch.

  7. They look awesome … both the planked wall and the fabulous shelves!! Of course, I love how you styled the shelves, and can only imagine how pretty they will be with your beautiful Christmas decor!

  8. Your open shelving is just right for that space. I give a thumbs up for the beauty they added, but I wouldn’t want to dust all of those things!

  9. How pretty! I too love the contrast between white woodwork and dark furniture/shelving. I just used that contrast in my master bathroom makeover and I want to put it throughout my house now. I love the open shelving. This has me thinking I should look around for a place to do just this.

    Beautiful!

  10. I love, love the planked wall and open shelves!! I am interested in the dog silhouettes and would love if your friend could make me one of my golden retriever!

    1. Hi Jane, I’ll see Sue tomorrow and ask her. If she can do it, I’ll give her your email.

  11. Joanne B. says:

Love the look of the open shelving but I guess I am just too practical in my “older age”! I don’t want to have to dust it regularly and would still want to wash the piece again before I used it for food! Beautiful to look at yours though! And sign my up for a
Golden Retriever silhouette too! Is there ANY other more perfect dog? They are THE BEST!

    1. Yvonne,
While I love the look of open shelves, I have some of the same concerns as Joanne B. about the upkeep. However, I love how they look, especially yours with the planked wall, white stoneware, and contrasting-color elements.

      Happy Thanksgiving,

      Judith

  12. The shelves are great looking. Love the display
    Have a great day.

  13. Very nice and love the planked wall. Personally I think showing the actually bindings with the names of the cookbooks is more interesting than brown burlap. I love seeing the names…it tells what kind of cooking you are interested in and therefore reveals something about you and makes is more personal and less homogenous like everyone else. So my vote is no to burlap! Just my two cents 🙂

  14. Hi Yvonne – I love the shelves and all the accessories you’ve incorporated …. it must be fun taking it all in while dining at the table. When I read the part about you covering the books with burlap, I actually said aloud “oh no”! I agree with Nanci who commented November 19th that leaving the cookbooks with their dust jackets on is SO much more interesting, adds character and reveals more of your personality. However, it is your house (lol!) and I know whatever you do, will be stunning! ?

  15. Hi Yvonne, how did you ever decide on which brackets to use on your shelves? I want shelves in my kitchen but I can not decide what style or color to use!

  16. Teryl Zollinger says:

I am learning to love the look of open shelves and I really love your style!
I do have a couple of questions if you don’t mind…
How thick are the boards for your shelves?
How much space between the shelves? between the top shelf and ceiling? the bottom shelf and your buffet?

That’s a lot, but would really help me plan on what I eventually want to put in our dining area.

Thanks in advance and thank you for sharing your wonderful home spaces.

    1. Hi Teryl! I believe the boards are 3/4 inch thick. There is 17 inches between each shelf and about 23 inches from the bar to the first shelf. I only wanted 3 shelves so there is over 2 feet from the last shelf to the ceiling. Hope this helps.

      1. Thank you SO much for this info. I have my shelf brackets but couldn’t decide how far apart to space the shelves. The wall and the shelves look fabulous! Love your styling too!

  17. Love the open shelving! It looks great! I have a wall above my coffee bar that I am wanting to add shelves. I’m having a hard time talking my hubby into it though! I’m not giving up, especially after seeing yours! Thanks for the inspiration again!

  18. Crystal Howley says:

Can you tell me if you had the shelves custom made or did you buy them somewhere? We are about to do this to a wall in our breakfast nook. Love the look.

  19. Monica Riley says:

I love your open shelves. Can you tell me where you got the fabulous metal baskets (one has books and the other pinecones etc.)?

    1. Hi Monica, I got them from Decor Steals. They are such a nice find!
