ON THE MENU DECEMBER 18, 2016… and FESSING UP!

ON THE MENU- A week's worth of scrumptious recipes. I'lll do the planning for you!

It’s Christmas week! The most beautiful week of all the year! I hope you soak up and drink in every minute! On a personal note, I have something to tell you that I have been hiding for awhile. Have you noticed that I’ve been missing a bit this week?  Well, time to fess up. I’ve been walking around on a fractured ankle (in a boot) for a few months. Unfortunately, it was near a very arthritic area of my ankle/foot and got so bad I had surgery on Tuesday. A pin and a plate later and 5 days in the hospital will hopefully give me an ankle as good as new. I just got home this afternoon…

I’m feeling fine and taking very good care of myself. I have never felt so happy to see StoneGable!

However, I am not able to put any weight on my left foot for 8 to 12 weeks!  YIKES!

You might be wondering how this will effect my blog. Hopefully, very little. I have a wheel chair and a knee scooter and lots and lots of help lined up. My assistant Katie who usually helps me put things away will be helping me in many more ways for awhile! Katie is THE BEST! It’s my goal to keep StoneGable up and running and active and beautiful and better than ever!

I’ll keep you posted on my recovery. Right now I just need prayer for healing and your friendship, like always!

To be honest I will not be cooking every day because my wonderful friends are bringing me meals several times a week. I still want to give you a full week of On The Menu even though I won’t be making everything each week.

Let’s get to a week of yummy recipes!

SUNDAY

My mom made a big pot of Cabbage soup for Bobby and me to enjoy tonight. I love this soup. I make it with lots of meat. When I’m on my feet again look for the recipe!

  • Nani’s Cabbage Soup
  • Crusty Bread

MONDAY

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Christmas week! It just “feels” different than any other week of the entire year! Join me in basking in the true meaning of Christmas this week!

My friend Fran makes legendary meatballs. This meatball recipe was given to her by her grandmother with a promise she would never share the recipe. But the cat’s or should I say meatballs are out of the bag. They are too good to keep secret. Fran always says, “If you see me sitting outside the pearly gates, you will know it’s because I have shared my grandmother’s meatball recipe”. lol!

I’m in a boot again for my left foot after two foot surgeries this year. Hoping now to avoid another one.
Feet are precious! Please everyone be careful and wear supportive shoes!

  44. Yvonne, I knew something was amiss and I am sorry to hear you are in pain. You are one to make the best off all situations and learn from them. I appreciate your testimony. You encourage me. Merry Christmas!

  47. Oh Yvonne, do take care of yourself!! Glad the surgery went well (wish we had known so we could have lifted you and your doctors up in prayer, but God knows your needs).
A word of caution…take it easy…a friend had something similar happen and did a bit too much with her knee scooter and fell!!! Ended up with a wrist brace too. Not fun.
Glad you have good help, and are willing to accept it.
Take this time to slow down and have a wonderful Christmas with your sweet family!!!

  48. Prayers for good healing. Years ago I had surgery in Dec and it really forces you to experience Christmas in a new way. Friends and helpers are such a blessing.

  51. Sending hugs and prayers for a swift and complete recovery! Take care of yourself…let others wait on you… xoxo

  52. I will be praying for your full and speedy recovery, Yvonne. Don’t you do a single thing but hold that grand baby for awhile. So excited to hear that you will be getting another one to love soon! I can’t wait for my first in April!

  53. Yvonne, I did 3 months no weight bearing due to an arthritic joint fusion in a foot a few years back. Also got the metal plate and pin badge. I’m gonna tell you it is no walk in the park. (Pun not intended!) it was my driving foot so no driving proved to be a giant hassle. When you can start showering again use a plastic umbrella sleeve to cover you leg. They are just inside most stores and grocers. My surgery was days before Thanksgiving so I know this is added trouble. I will say my husband came away with a deeper understanding of what I do during the day when he’s working and it completely changed our relationship in a good way.

  54. Best to you in your recovery. Your blog is great, informative and a great read. Merry Christmas!

  55. I’m so sorry this has happened to you! Put your feet up, take care of yourself and let others help this joyous season.

  57. Yvonne, So sorry to hear about your injury and resulting surgery but was so glad to hear you are on the mend. When there were no new blogs from you I feared something terrible had happened to you or a family member. I guess sometimes God tells us to slow down a little. I wish you a peaceful and beautiful Christmas with your loved ones around you. We will all be here when you are fully recovered and your blog is back up. Just rest and heal. Prayers of health and happiness. Merry Christmas and happy New Year, Kathy

  58. Yes, you were missed. Mentioned to my husband that I hoped you were not sick, so already praying for you. Guessing it will be a tad difficult to let others minister to you with your servant’s heart. May the outpouring of love, prayers and well wishes, encourage you. I’m thinking lots of snuggle time with Anderson while you rest.

  59. Yikes, Yvonne, that is quite a secret! SO sorry u r going through these hard times & I pray u will heal quickly now post-op. ??

We all tend to over do things during the Holidays, and this may be God’s way of saying…..slow down Yvonne! LOL…..my prayers are for a speedy and pain free recovery. It seems that you have an army waiting in the wings to come to your rescue during this time. I know you will find joy in each and every day because you are a Child of God. 78. well that certainly doesn’t sound very holidayish….but the body doesn’t care if we might be busy with the holidays….so prayers for a speedy complete recovery…

  79. Yvonne, oh my goodness! I’m so sorry you had to go thru surgery. But i am sending you prayers for a speedy recovery! Wishing you & your family a Merry Christmas? Many blessings for 2017?

  80. Nancy of Lake Stevens says:

Yvonne, I remember years ago when you decided to take a sabbatical from blogging but said that the content would still be available. I went through and wrote down the post title and date for every single recipe because I didn’t want to miss a thing. This was before Pinterest. I am so happy you are back with your wonderful recipes.

On another note, I am sorry to hear about your injury. I wish you a speedy recovery and many, many friends to care for you. I know if those of us in blogland could send a meal or clean a toilet for you we would.

  81. You are in my thoughts & prayers way up here in snow covered, gorgeous Vermont. Your story of your recent physical challenges has given me renewed hope & encouragement that I will survive two weeks of holiday company despite my flare-up of hip arthiritis that makes it difficult to dance around my kitchen while prepping all those holiday meals! Let’s be proud of our inner strength & carry on in the true spirit of the season. Blessed Christmas & Happy New Year, Yvonne.

    1. Angela,
Hope you enjoy your Christmas company! Hope your arthritis doesn’t keep you from “dancing”!

  82. My sincerest sympathy. And I can definitely sympathize because I’ve been hobbling around in a boot myself for the past 4 weeks after foot surgery. But at least I can put weight on my foot. Take care of yourself and don’t hesitate to accept help. While we all love your almost daily posts, we can survive while you put your focus on recovering.

  83. Many prayers for a speedy and complete recovery for your ankle. Let your friends and husband take care of you. Two Christmases ago, I had knee surgery. I did too much and suffered a painful recovery. Let those who love you wait on you. You have already decorated and baked for Christmas so take it easy. So excited about your expecting another grandchild.

  84. Sharon Burckhalter says:

Feeling so bad for you but glad we will still see your wonderful blogs. I too have a fractured ankle which is healing but found out I have a torn tendon so definitely surgery. Waiting until after the holidays. Not sure what it will hold but ready to get it done. Wishing you the best in your long recovery and keep the beautiful pictures and info coming.

  85. Well the silver lining is that you will be “forced” to take it easy and enjoy every second of this week(and a few more after!)instead of rushing around to finish up last minute things! Prayers for a speedy recovery. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  86. MARY-ANN (FROM CANADA!) says:

Yvonne, we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. May God continue to lay His healing hand upon you. Your post was missed but we all want you to just do what you can and take some time over the next few weeks to just enjoy your family. God bless each and every one of you! Have a blessed week and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

We continue to thank God for you and the special person you are. Your posts are wonderful.

Bless you in a special way this coming week, Yvonne! May you feel His presence!

    1. Thank you Mary-Ann for your beautiful comment! Every single comment means so much to me!

  87. Marcy Leonard says:

Oh my! Well, in an apparent show of solidarity unawares, I tripped and fell yesterday, thankfully ONLY breaking my next-to-pinkie toe (ring toe?) and badly bruising my knee. I am the family Klutz–am perfecting my Ho-Ho hobble for Xmas and using a walker.
Hope you continue to mend nicely–one silver-lining, I hope is that you can spend extra time holding that grandbaby while others handle Xmas.

  88. Jacqueline says:

Yvonne, I wish you a blessed Christmas surrounded by all you love and who love you. Offering prayers fora speedy recovery. Blessings

  89. Merry Christmas Yvonne. Praying for a full & speedy recovery from your surgery. It is hard for a busy girl to be laid up during the Christmas Holidays, but sounds like you will handle it with grace. Also, if you look for the silver lining here it is, since you have to be sitting a lot it is a perfect place for a new grandson to spend Christmas.

  90. Karen Stopher says:

I agree with Janice, I good time to slow down , could be your best Christmas yet. So glad you have help. Praying for a speedy and complete recovery. Congrats on another new grand baby coming. 104. Oh no! So sorry to hear about your ankle! Putting you on my prayer list. Take care of yourself, keep us posted on your recovery, and enjoy Christs birth with your family.

  105. Yvonne,
I hate welcoming you to the ankle, pins, plates and boot club but here are?

Please take extra care with that break, sometimes it takes a little longer to heal fully. The good news is, now you can predict stormy weather. Seriously, happy to hear you have help during your recovery. Merry Christmas!

Oh my dear Yvonne – I hope this finds you resting and elevating that ankle ! I also hope and pray that you aren’t in terrible pain. So sorry you had to had surgery. I can only imagine your disdain of being non mobile but as someone long ago told me: Perhaps God thinks now is a good time for you to slow down! Your organizational skills already have enabled Stongegable to continue going forward. I wish you best for Christmas and the coming New Year! You will be in my prayers!

You are an amazing woman, Yvonne. Blessings during your recovery and may the Lord bless you and keep you with joy during this blessed season. Thanks for all the beautiful things you post and your obvious love for the Lord or this Season.

  154. Well, of course we’ve been missing you!
I feel for you, Yvonne. I had a tri-mal fracture of my ankle 20 years ago with no weight-bearing for 12 weeks, and a l-o-n-g recovery, including learning to walk again (you forget due to proproception after being off it for a time). I have a long plate and 7 screws, and I have NO idea why you aren’t in bed doped up on drugs! It was the most painful thing I’ve ever had to endure. I have prayed for your healing and will continue to pray for an extra measure of grace to bear this trial. I’m glad you have Katie and a load of people who love you. It’s impossible to do this by yourself!
All your readers love you, too – and we’d be there fixing meals, cleaning your bathroom, and washing your hair if we all lived closer.

    1. proprioception is the right spelling

  155. Wishing a happy holiday and speedy healing! I love your blog so much, you’re amazing and inspiring.

Yvonne…..it sounds like you’ve got a challenge on your hands with that ankle! I love your positive attitude about it and also your umbrella of joy that never goes away, no matter what! Merry Christmas!

  159. Well you are definitely making a memory this Christmas — but not the one you hoped for and planned! I am so very sorry for the trial of this ankle injury and surgery, but I pray that you will be encouraged by people helping you through this season. You will really be looking forward to spring and walking in your garden — even more than usual! We do look forward to your posts, even when we aren’t able to comment. Your posts are inspiring and fun and so very helpful! Hope you are able to rest and enjoy the view from your window, read a good book, and listen to uplifting music. You’ll be better before the daffodils are blooming! 🙂

  160. Sending many prayers your way for a speedy recovery.

Oh no Yvonne, so very sorry to hear you are recovering from surgery and under the weather for the holidays. Prayers for healing coming from me to you.

  169. I have a question completely unrelated to this post. In a picture of your kitchen sometime ago on the blog there was a dish stacking unit on your countertop that held 2 sizes of plates and cups. What was your source for that unit?

    1. Hi Carol, I think you are talking about my mug holder. I found that at Decor Steals. Hope this helps.

  173. Maggie Nelson says:

So sorry to hear about your ankle. Prayers coming your way for a speedy recovery!

  174. How very sorry I am to learn of your ankle injury and surgery, Yvonne, and what timing!! 🙁 You give us readers so many lovely decor ideas, amazingly professional photographs, recipes and content to read every single day, that your absence went (almost) unnoticed by me; I simply thought you were taking a well deserved Christmas break with your company. Take this time to put your feet up and cuddle the grandson and let others give back to you for a change! Don’t try to push yourself and overdo it … I had a second knee replaced a few months ago and know how long the body needs to heal. By the way, your gift and card arrived yesterday and I have to ask … did you do that beautiful calligraphy?? The enclosed family photograph was SUCH a delight and surprise – it made the receiving end here feel so very personal! Everyone who visits and sees it, asks who my friends are! lol! Take care of yourself and Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!

  175. I’m praying that you have a good recovery. Please mind the doctor’s orders. Have a Blessed Christmas with your family and friends.

  176. Anne Porter says:

Thinking of you and asking ? for complete healing . Just being in your home is a soothing remedy, isn’t it?
    Merry CHRISTmas , dear one!?

  177. Yvonne, no more secrets – we could have been praying!!!! xo GET WELL and STRONG.

  178. Anna Clarke says:

Yvonne, so sorry for your injury. Wishing you a speedy and as painless as possible recovery and a great holiday.
Thank you for the “On the Menu” feature. I’ve tried a couple of the dishes (delicious!), and your suggestions have reminded me of things I haven’t made I quite a while. Thanks for making dinner more interesting.

  181. I’m sorry we didn’t know because I’m sure like me, we would have loved to be praying for you. But I will start now. “Precious FATHER, Jehovah Rapha, please mend the bones in Yvonne’s ankle. Give her comfort. Help her to rest in YOUR care through her family and friends at this time. Help her to rest and not worry because YOU have allowed this for YOUR good purpose. We know YOUVE got this! So thank YOU precious LORD! In JESUS’ name, AMEN.

  182. Pam Fogal says:

Merry Christmas Yvonne! My prayers are with you for a very peaceful, loving time with your family as we celebrate the birth of our Savior! I must admit you have inspired me to be more in tune to the true meaning of Christmas. At this time of year, it is so easy to get side-tracked with deadlines, gift buying, school programs and Santa gifts, that I get so frustrated with myself when Christmas Day is finally here. I pray for that mind change so I have a Peaceful Heart at this Christmas.

  183. Mary Robinson says:

Best wishes for a quick healing. Love the menu ideas. Thanks for sharing.

  184. Sarah Barr says:

Sounds good! Would love the chocolate bourbon pecan cake recipe too!

  185. Yvonne, would love to be able to join in to help you along your road to recovery! Sure wish I could do more than send up prayers … but I will be content doing just that.
I have pinned most all the recipes you posted and look foreard to trying them! We are so lucky to be able to include yours and your friends’ creations in our own meal planning in the coming weeks!
Hoping your recovery is still going well, and you are taking good care of yourself. Don’t get overly confident about being so mobile ~ be sure to follow doctors’ orders!!! Hope your Christmas was the Merriest, and you have a very Happy New Year … ! Sending gentle hugs your way!

  186. Great Menu Ideas I will use them. Rest and heal. I know your mind is full of ideas. Take one day at a time. Can’t wait to read and see what you will share with us next.
