Summer at StoneGable means red, white and blue!!! My mostly neutral living spaces take on a very patriotic look when the weather starts to swelter! In our area we fly Old Glory big and proud, have homespun 4th of July parades, lots of fireworks and local farm and country fairs. Our love of country runs deep here! I was inspired by Pottery Barn’s Patriotic Stars to make some of my own!!! They are an easy-to-make NO SEW project with a big dose of summery patriotism!

Today’s post is part of…

These stars are really very easy to make but they do take a little time. To make this project VERY managable, I painted the patriotic star burlap one day and then ironed them and put them together another day. Doing this gave the paint time to dry!

Don’t you love when a project comes out better than you anticipated!!! I sure do! This is one of those projects! And these stars were very inexpensive to make… especially compared to the Pottery Barn price (now on SALE $19.50-$20.50 EACH!!!).

MATERIALS:

  • Burlap   I used 2 different types. Light colored burlap, which was sold by the yard. I got it from JoAnne’s Fabric. And I also used a stiff burlap runner. Sold on a roll HERE
  • Painter’s tape. I used Frog Tape in a Chevron pattern and a Wave pattern as well as regular painter’s tape.
  • Craft paints. Red, White, Blue
  • Sponge rollers, small or paint brushes
  • Credit card
  • Heavy duty spray starch
  • Twine

1. Cut the burlap to make a star. Cut the width 1/2 of the size you want the diameter of the star to be. Example: if you want a 10 inch star cut the burlap 5 inches wide. If you want a 16 inch star, cut the burlap 8 inches wide.

Cut the length of the burlap at east 6 times longer than the width you cut. Example: to make a 10 inch star you will cut the width 5 inches and the length 30 inches or more.

SG TIPS: I pull the treads of the burlap to make a “runner” to cut the burlap straight. For an easy tutorial about cutting burlap see my friend Ann’s blog. She is amazing. Click HERE.

2. Use painters tape to mark off  stripes and designs. Use a credit card (I used my  Regal Cinema movie card) to scrap across the tape to make sure it adheres to the burlap.

3. Using craft paint, paint between the marked off areas with a sponge roller. Let completely dry. I took my banners outside and laid them in the grass on a hot afternoon.

4. Turn on an iron to the hottest setting. Spray the back side of the banner with HEAVY DUTY spray starch and let it dry a little. Accordion pleat the banner in about 1 inch pleats by ironing it each time it is folded. Let cool and dry like image above!

5. When the accordion banner is dry bend the ends around to meet and match and make a circle. Do this on a flat surface. Hot glue together. The swirl will happen naturally. If you would like all the ends to meet in the center you may need to glue them that way on the wrong side of the star. Glue liberally!!!!

Add a twine to the back of the star with hot glue

6. Hang. (Star Spangled Banner playing in the background… flags waving… lots of fireworks… people cheering and throwing confetti!!!!)

I used tiny 3M Command Strips to hang the Patriotic Stars from the ceiling. Easy-peasy!

  1. Yvonne,
These are absolutely gorgeous! They would be so pretty for our 4th of July annual party at the beach cottage. Thanks for the fabulous idea. So making these! Hugs, Christy

  2. So, so cute! I’ve been wanting to do some burlap-themed 4th of July decorations and these are beautiful. Ones in more neutral colors would be gorgeous for shower or party decorations too! Definitely stealing this idea!

  3. Yvonne, love your July 4th ideas! By the way you will be the best Grammy ever someday! I have a little granddaughter who made her very early arrival on the 4th of July…and by God’s miraculous ways and our fervent faith and prayers we will be celebrating her 10th birthday this year. so we are always looking for ways to decorate and food and make it a great day for her…she is also pretty sure every parade she goes to is just for her! Thanks for all your wonderful and creative ideas and Happy Fourth!

  4. These are fabulous. I have been wanting to try these out for my front porch for a while now, and you made it look so easy I think I will. I think I may even have enough burlap on hand without an extra trip to the fabric store. 😀 Thanks for explaining it so clearly. Loved being in the No Sew Showcase with you, as always. xxoo, Barb

  5. Those are fabulous Yvonne! Thanks for sharing your project:) I haven’t done any crafting with burlap yet so I might have to give that one a try for the 4th!
