HOW TO STYLE AN EARLY FALL VIGNETTE

EARLY FALL VIGNETTE

This post is sponsored by Heritage Lace.

One of my favorite things to do is to style a vignette in a tray. And of all the vignettes I style I like styling ones on my kitchen table best. Today, I have a really simple early fall vignette that anyone can copy! And it starts with the most fabulous tray! I can’t wait to show you!

Okay, let’s style an early fall vignette! Here are tips to think about when you style your very own vignette…

PICK A FABULOUS TRAY

You might think you can grab just about anything to corral a vignette, and you really can… but WHY? Make a careful choice when thinking about what you are going to put your vignette in.

This lovely tray is from Heritage Lace. When I took it out of the box I literally sighed and said, “Oh this is sooooo gorgeous”!!!!! Isn’t it? My girls will want this tray for sure!

It is a lovely soft, almost chalky galvanized metal with raised creamy white embellishments. I knew it was going to be perfect for an early fall vignette!

USE A SEASONAL ELEMENT

Early fall is all about apples. But, I wanted to subtly give homage to another fall fruit. The beautiful, shapely, pear! I have a crush on pears. To me, they are so artistic looking! And they taste scrumptious too. This fall is the perfect time to give a nod to pears!

Using an organic element in a vignette is a must for me!

ADD A TALL ELEMENT

The easiest way to add something tall to an early fall vignette is to use a candlestick and candle. We light a candle at dinnertime every night.

I chose a carved wooden candlestick that has a little chippy white paint left on it. I think the candle works with the wood blocks.

VARY HEIGHTS AND TEXTURES

EARLY FALL VIGNETTE

Varying heights and textures in a vignette are always so fun for me! This is where I play! I chose a white enameled bowl with a lid (I used the lid to set the bowl on) to hold these work-of-art Heritage Lace wood blocks. Aren’t they amazing? I think the leaf blocks give another hint of fall to the overall vignette.

The wood blocks can be used like a stamp. I have a stash of Bleached Dropcloths that have been waiting for these!

USE A TIGHT COLOR PALETTE

One of the most effective things you can do to create a successful vignette is to use just a few colors. Too many colors can be very busy and distracting!

Even my garden flowers are shades of white! And the Dusty Miller leaves are silver gray!

SPILL YOUR VIGNETTE ONTO THE TABLE

On my kitchen table, vignettes look best when decor elements are repeated around them. I used a set of round canisters to flank the tray. And pulled the pear element out of the vignette and onto the table too!

Did you notice the square canisters sitting on the side board in the images above?

DETAILS… DETAILS… DETAILS

ALWAYS, pay attention to the details !!! They bring such beauty to any decorating endeavor!!!

It’s time to start thinking about fall. And what better way than to style an early fall vignette!

Here’s an idea for using the pears when they are very ripe…

  1. I really like the subtle fall colors that you use. I think I’m going to try that this year.

  2. Spill your vignette – what an original idea. I have problems with too much symmetry….”spilling” should help my vignettes seem friendlier. Thanks

    1. Hi Gail: I love symmetry in many ways – such us our last living room had a fireplace between two French doors out to the garden then I flanked the fireplace with matching love-seats but then added other furniture to offset the symmetry a bit. You say you have trouble … what I find helps if you are a bit uneasy at first, is (for example, take a mantel) place say, a pair of candlesticks at each end of the mantel then maybe add another matching set of something (vase? Figures?) then purposely start adding more decor items just to the ONE side of the mantel (varying heights, of course). After a while, you will see deficiencies in your arrangement and then might remove the one candlestick at the end and put it with its mate and stack some upright books where the candlestick was. In other words, start with symmetry BUT then start to “play” with items – adding and deleting as you go. The same thing applies to creating an arrangement on a tray or sofa table. You will learn as you go along and have so much fun.

  3. Wonderful post! Thank You.

Oh I loved seeing your home in the fall issue of Cottage Living, my all time favorite magazine! A treat! And now I am enjoying seeing your fall vignette, love the pears and recipe. I think I just died and went to heaven!

  15. Yvonne, I think the tray and canisters are fabulous! Though I am not ready to think about fall I appreciate the lovely vignette. Hope you are back on your feet and enjoying the beauty of late summer!

  16. Your blogs are always so informative . I tend to use the same container -a gorgeous fish bowl in the Tobbaco leaf pattern that I bought at Tuesday Morning many years ago. I change it out for the seasons — hydrangeas for spring and summer, pumpkins and gourds for fall, poinsettias for winter. All real so I don’t have to store them. My first thought is always — where do you store it all?

  17. Susan Sellers says:

I love everything that you do! Your simplicity is so elegant! Thanks for sharing Heritage Lace.

  18. I love it. You have inspired me for the fall but not quite ready yet. I am looking around and love the tray and blocks. I have learned from you doing the trays which now I have been buying trays when I see them at estate sales. Such fun thank you for inspiring me.

  19. I know as a decor guru you have to be a month or so ahead in decorating ideas but I am still in my planning for September and your ideas are an inspiration. Went shopping yesterday for some fall scented candles,a beautiful pillow and came home to find Amazon just delivered my order of faux pears. Love fall decorating.

  20. Barbara Bachus says:

Wow, I am loving that tray! I have been planning my fall and holiday decorating around a new rug in my living room and this will help tie the rooms together! As always, your blog is the first stop with my morning coffee!!

  21. A very nice vignette for this time of year without rushing to push summer out the door! I like the square cannisters too!

  22. How beautiful! I have never heard about Heritage Lace–how lovely. The tray is perfect. Pears are a good alternative to typical fall decorating. I love the subtle colors–not glaringly typical fall colors.

  23. Looks like you found a new love in Heritage Lace.Love the tray and canisters, so
    unusual, loving the vignette.

  24. The “Heritage Lace” tray is lovely and so unique! What a perfect name for the company…the designs are like vintage lace. It works perfectly with your vignette! I bet their sales go UP next week.

  26. Beautiful – as usual. This may inspire me to just replace my tables summer vignette with early fall – difficult with the heat outside, but school started today so I’m ready for a change too.

  27. Anne Marie says:

How beautfull – love that tray.

  28. PAT WILDE says:

AWESOME!!!!! Where did you get the silver pear?

    1. The pear is stone and I found it at a local shop. Sorry I cannot help you more!

  29. So very lovely!! Thank you!

  30. Irresistible. Must confess that I put my pears in a cream bowl with one spilling onto the shelf for summer. It reminds me of a still-life piece of art. You are a great teacher.

  31. Judy Wright says:

Once again Yvonne, you have delighted me with your GORGEOUS vignette!! I couldn’t help myself and immediately went online to Heritage Lace and ordered a tray and the wooden blocks!!! 32. Karen Gormley says:

Beautiful table. I always keep my vignettes inside of the tray so I can move it for dinner, but then the table looks so empty when we sit down to eat. How do you work with your vignettes during meals?

  33. So Love the tray and the whole look.

  34. Deb Gregory says:

Lovely as usual Y!!! I like the Heritage Lace site too!

  35. Erica Thomas says:

I absolutely love the tray and canisters. Pears are one of my favorite fruits to use. I even covered a light bulb with twine and used a small piece of stick and created my own pears. They look beautiful in a vintage white bowl on my table. Just wanted to share.

  36. I love this! I have a chippy white tray used for my coffee/beverage area, that would be great on my table! I love pears and will use them in a bowl I can get from another cupboard. I have some tall candle holders in a lovely green metal which will be picked up in the greenery in the small vases. I have some carved wooden spheres that I can brush with a bit of white that should fut right in! This will be fun! Thank you for all the wonderful ideas.

  37. Adore the whole vignette! You have a gift! Especially love the little flower vases!!

Love the tray and all the tips for creating a fall vignette.

  45. I love those wood block stamps! On a different topic and one you may be planning is fall door decor. I have double front doors and am tired of the typical double matching wreaths that I seem to be stuck with. Would welcome a fresh idea! Thanks!

  46. Just love everything about the vignette ! The wood blocks are so unique. I caved in and ordered them! Love the tray and matching canisters as well. I will definitely be using the wood blocks in my up-coming fall kitchen vignette. Thanks, Yvonne!

I love the wooden blocks! I looked on the Heritage Lace website and got distracted by all the nice things they have. I finished reading your post and can’t wait to get home and dig out my fake pears that look so real and set up a Fall vignette….it’s time for the sea shells to take a rest anyway. Thanks for giving me the boost I needed to jump into Fall!

  54. Good morning Yvonne
Just finished removing my lemon and lime decor in my kitchen. Have put a faux sunflower arrangement on the table, a basket of green apples on my small island and a vignette on the counter using some assorted fruit plants, a Nantucket basket for napkins and a n Apple green bowl to be used for some white .hydrangeas.My lemon wreath on the wall has been replaced …by a large tobacco basket.Pears will be added later.Ready for some cool weather.
