FLY EAGLES FLY!

Today is a day better than a national holiday for the Eagles Nation! For those of us who bleed green and proudly wear the “dawg” masks today marks a singular day in time. After 52 Superbowls or beloved Eagles are finally on the gridiron battling it out for our very first Superbowl title! To say our household is a little bit crazy is a huge understatement. We are frenetic!!!!  Did you know that God talks about Eagles too? In His word, God shows us His marvelous truth through Eagles.  Let’s take a look…

Being an Eagles fan is not for the faint of heart! It is not for those who would grow weary. We are a people of standing strong in the face of heart wrenching disappointment albeit verbally cursing our team as only family can do!

We have had victory snatched from our hands on quite a few occasions yet hope springs eternal for any true Eagles fan! We have waited 52 years. Through thick and thin and fog and snow and blistering heat and heartbreak and disappointment. And today is the culmination of all the waiting and long-suffering. We have made it to the mountain and we are climbing to the pinnacle!!! Hear our battle cry…

FLY EAGLES FLY

ON THE ROAD TO VICTORY

FLY EAGLES FLY

SCORE A TOUCHDOWN

1 – 2 – 3!

HIT EM’ LOW

HIT EM’ HIGH

AND WATCH OUR EAGLES FLY!

FLY EAGLES FLY

ON THE ROAD TO VICTORY!

E-A-G-L-E-S  EAGLES!!!!!

Yesterday one of the pastors of our church came to visit me. You see, I’ve not been myself for a while now. Since Christmas, I have had three ankle surgeries and I am looking forward to three more. Long story that started in 2016 but I am now on the slow road to recovery.

We had a lovely visit and shared communion and Pastor Will read this incredible verse from the book of Psalms…

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;
 Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;
 Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
 Who satisfies your years with good things,

So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.  Psalm 103:1-5

Yes, a beautiful verse and one that spoke to my situation. Psalm 103 talks about all that I need to bless the Lord for … pardoning my sin, healing my disease, redeeming me from the pit, crowning me with His lovingkindness and His compassion, satisfying my years with good things!

I could bless the Lord and His holy name forever from this amazing list!!!!

The Psalmist then tucked this last verse into his psalm…

SO THAT YOUR YOUTH IS RENEWED LIKE THE EAGLE.

Yes Lord, I want my youth renewed like the Eagle! My youth can be seen in the rear view mirror!  So, of course, I want it renewed!

But why EAGLES? God used what was familiar and accessible to the ancients to get His point across! And Eagles were a common bird in the time of the Bible.

The ancients believed that an eagle could live up to one hundred years. And that an eagle renewed it’s wing feathers by violently diving into the ocean. The old feather would be stripped away and new pinions would grow. Especially as an eagle became very old they would renew themselves by making more strong flight feathers thus renewing their strength.

An eagle needed strong “flight” feathers. You see an eagle is able to fly to extraordinary heights and soar on currents of air. The wind beneath its wings carries him long and far!

Isaiah 40: 27-41 says…

Why do you say, O Jacob, and assert, O Israel,
“My way is hidden from the Lord,
And the justice due me escapes the notice of my God”?
 Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.
His understanding is inscrutable.
 He gives strength to the weary,
And to him who lacks might He increases power.
 Though youths grow weary and tired,
And vigorous young men stumble badly,
 Yet those who wait for the Lord
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.

God tells us those who WAIT  upon the Lord will gain new strength and they will mount up with wings like eagles. The word WAIT in Hebrew is qavah (kaw-vaw’). The word qavah means to twist, stretch and a rope with tension. It also carries the meaning of waiting expectantly and to wait in hope.

Waiting is hard for us. It is not a place where most of us like to be. When we wait our emotions get twisted up, our patience gets stretched and there can be a lot of tension in life. It’s uncomfortable so we often try to get out of waiting on the Lord by taking things into our own hands. Bad choice!!!

God literally tells us the beautiful prize for waiting for His timing and praying for His will in those waiting time. He says…

Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength, will mount up with wings like eagles, will run and not get tired and walk and not get weary!

What a prize for waiting for the Lord!

So as I wait for my ankle to heal I will wait! I will wait upon the Lord. Expecting to see His blessings and His grace poured all over my life!

Today I also wait with great anticipation and hope for my Eagles to take us to victory. Donned in Eagles green from head to foot I sing Fly Eagles Fly and eat BBQ wings!

But there is a surer hope, a greater hope, a hope that does not fail. A hope worth waiting for! The hope that is eternal and will renew my hope like an eagle! PRAISE THE LORD!

Memorization Verse this week:

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;
 Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;
 Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
 Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.  Psalm 103:1-5

    Blessings,

  7. Beautiful post from two of my favorite scriptures. We use to sing a song from Isaiah 40 when I was younger. I find myself humming it or singing it when I’m driving, or doing dishes or just mindless tasks. The last line says teach me Lord to wait. Oh the joy of waiting on Him. Sending prayers for a complete recovery with no further complications. God bless you for this wonderful teaching.

  8. Ann Marie says:

    Uh, sorry I can’t back you in your rooting for the Eagles.. I live in NH and am a devoted Patriots fan…lol

    We’ll see what this evening brings.. It’s going to be a tough game; hope there aren’t any serious injuries.. I like a good game, but when a player is seriously hurt, my heart stops…

    (go pats!)

  10. Greetings from chilly MINNESOTA!!!! GO VIKES!

    First and foremost sending prayers and hugs as that pesky ankle continues to be a challenge. I have problems with my left achilles and just don’t want to deal with it.

    In your honor I will root for the Eagles today. I am not much of a football fan but do enjoy the energy of it all.
    I hope your fans that are here are enjoying our beautiful festivities and our gorgeous stadium! It is a site to see.

    Snuggle with with a cozy blanket today and may your Eagles soar high.

  11. PATRICIA FULLAM says:

    Sorry to hear of your medical difficulties and wish you a speedy recovery. Are you a native of the Philly area?? I’ve recently moved to Florida but will forever be an Eagles fan. You’re right —being an Eagles fan is not for the faint of heart but……..here we are!! GO EAGLES!!

    1. Hi Patricia, I’ve lived all over the states and abroad. My father was in the Air Force. We settled in Pa about an hour from Philadelphia. I have cheered for the Eagles all my life.

  12. Yvonne, I am so sorry you are still laid up. I have missed you the last few weeks as your blog is the only one I follow daily. My prayers are with you as you wait for total healing. I live in NE Iowa and 20 miles from this beautiful place. I grew up 4 miles from it as a kid. We call it “Gods Country”. Anyway we have lots of Eagles around and many years ago they put web cams up and we watch the eggs being laid and the chicks being hatched in the spring. This is live 24/7 and so fun to watch. Mom and Dad both take care of the eggs. In the summer we love walking around the trails and fish hatchery below. Beautiful trout they restock the streams with, and every so often an eagle swoops to catch a fish. Check it out as they are beautiful creatures. God bless you. http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles

  13. Dearest Yvonne,

    I am struggling from a back surgery from last June and am trying to avoid having a fusion. I understand your struggle! As I pray for my own patience and slow healing I will also cover you in prayer!

    P.S. This Idaho family is also rooting for the Eagles and our former BSU family Jay Ajai !!

    GO EAGLES!

    Deb

  14. Oh, sweet friend, my heart goes out to you. Three with three more?!! And didn’t you have a knee surgery that had a difficult recovery? I’m sorry that in my personal busyness I missed this. I’ll pray for a speedy recovery for your recent surgery and for the very best outcome on the road ahead. Sending love and hugs. Wish I lived closer so I could bring you a pot of my healing chicken soup. xoxo
    p.s. Go Eagles!

    1. Diane, you did not miss anything, I’ve not just mentioned it. Thanks for you prayers.

  15. Thank you for the post. It was much needed word for me today. Thank you.

  16. Terry Kirchner says:

    Very nice reading. Thank you.

  17. I had I idea you’ve been in and out of surgery three times since Christmas. I will pray that these surgeries will result in a successful outcome. Thinking of you as we root on the eagles from Reading, PA. Go E-a-g-l-e-s!?

  18. Hope you are feeling better and can enjoy the big game. AMEN…so happy to see your post about the faith filled Eagles team. My dear husband is a lifelong Eagles fan and is so excited – and I am so excited to see such fine young men who know God and are a great example to all to play on such a huge stage. Want to see them win for many reasons…but hope they do so they can share their faith on the world stage! God bless…and get well soon ! http://www.ournewvista.com

  19. A wonderful post, and the memorization verse is perfect. Eagles visit the CT River this time of year and there are lots of them out there today, in spite of this being Patriots land. I wonder if it’s an omen. Hope your ankle heals quickly and that the Eagles win. I’m rooting for the underdog!

  20. Peggy Bshop says:

    Loved your message today, hope you heal quickly with your ankle. I am blessed to live in Eagle country a they are amazing creatures of God.

  21. Theresa at Winterberry Lane says:

    What a great post today.I’ll keep you in my prayers for a speedy recovery Yvonne. We had an eagle soar over our our house and landed in the field east of our house this past Tuesday. What a majestic creature, I was totally awe struck at how large an eagles wing span really is. Beautiful!

  22. An absolutely beautiful post today!! My prayers are with you for healing and recovery. I will bless the Lord!

  24. A wonderful post today. Thank you. I shall wait!!
    PS hope your eagles win

  25. God bless you as you have blessed me today with your kind words and reminding your readers of God’s amazing faithfulness to his children. Also, I love the majestic eagle and how God uses it to illustrate his power and strength through us. Praying for healing and recovery of your ankle, too!

  26. I’m sorry to hear you have more surgery ahead, it’s been a long haul. You are such an inspiration and I appreciate your sharing your faith in such a beautiful way. Sending prayers for God’s blessings.

  27. May the Eagles soar!! Good luck!

  28. Yvonne — I have a lot of experience with ankle issues and I know it’s not fun. A few years ago I slipped in my garden and broke both ankles at the same time. OUCH !!! It took a long surgery and a lot of screws and rods to put my feet back together. I spent 6 weeks in a wheel chair and then 3 months in casts. There was pain, frustration and I got pretty snippy at times BUT the Lord blessed me with so much grace and a wonderful family that prayed for me. It took me a number of months to fully recover but I never had any doubts. Compared to what Jesus went through for us, my broken ankles were a mere inconvenience. I will lift you up in prayer and may the Lord abundantly bless you with grace.

  29. Yvonne, we readers of your blog feel like we know you because of your gift for sharing your heart and faith and thoughts. Most of us don’t really know you on a personal level, but many of us intimately know the same God you speak so elequently about. Praying to the Great Physician for healing for you. Blessings!

  30. I love those verses Yvonne!! I have always memorized these verses since college. I have loved the verses of the Eagles. Such a beautiful, majestic and strong symbol of God’s giving us strength. Thank you for sharing these wonderful verses of inspiration.

  31. Cynthia Miller says:

    YEA! Congratulations Eagles,

  32. So excited that the name of our
    Lord was proclaimed by so many tonight!! Congratulations to the Eagles!!!!

  33. Congratulations-from a former St Louis Ram fan-two of our former Rams now your Eagles-Chris Long and Nick Foles had a big night for your Eagles and 3 Eagles including your coach gave all the glory to God on National Tv. If you get a chance look at the outstanding Man for Others, Chris Long is. A couple of years ago, he and another players lived amongst the homeless here in St. Louis so they could better understand the needs of the homeless. Quite a story they told and walked away changed men.

    1. Yes, we have many Godly Eagles player. And it was music to my ears to hear them give glory to God!

  34. On the early evening news here in Kansas City (go Chiefs!) they showed a church sign that said, “The number of times these words are mentioned in bible verses: Eagles 33 Patriots 0.” I thought it was great and it turned out to be fairly accurate, as far as which team won the Super Bowl! Congratulations to the Eagles’ victory! Great job!

  35. Congratulations Yvonne! I saw the spectacular Foles TD in a patient’s room. Awesome coach and play. Funny, how I thought of you because I don’t know any Eagles fans. Too close to Green Bay!

  36. Congrats to the Eagles for a great and entertaining game. As a New England Pat’s fan I was a bit disappointed but what can you do? Get ready for the Red Sox!

    Hope you are staying off your foot and healing. I know more than I care to say about infections, IV antibiotics and operations.

    Enjoy the magic of your Eagles. Hope you get to see the trophy in person. The Pat’s will be back next year.
    All the Best,
    Nancy,

  37. I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been down again; I pray you get complete healing. Until the NFL straightens up I just can’t get behind football anymore; I used to love it. A veteran’s group wants to place an add in the super bowl’s commemorative program showing the flag and #please stand and it’s rejected due to the leagues policy against ads that carry a political message but yet the NFL allows Budweiser and 84 Lumber to run political commercials in regards to immigration last year during the game. Get the politics out of the game and I’ll watch it again.

  38. Susan Dumont says:

    Our family are also Eagles fans, living in South Jersey, we were all originally from Philadelphia. There was lots of cheering in our home yesterday! How great to see our quarterback and also our coach give all the praise to Our Lord and Savior The Lord Jesus Christ!

  39. I was so sad when the Eagles beat my Minnesota Vikings in the playoff game. At least my stadium made the Super Bowl.
