A farmhouse usually included a transition area from the outside to in… hence the farmhouse porch.

The front of the home was the “formal” area where guest were welcomed. Although usually quite simple, it served to meet the formal social norms of the day. The back of the house usually had the kitchen and a bedroom. Or if the home was two-stories, the bedrooms were there.

That is the origins of FARMHOUSE STYLE!

Big hefty sinks were a must to hold lots of produce from the farm, babies that needed washing, chickens that needed plucking and a whole lot more. I don’t have chickens to pluck or babies to wash (yet) but I sure love my soapstone farmhouse sink and use it hard!

I love that even though I don’t live in a farmhouse (I live in the suburbs outside a large city) I can still add farmhouse style to my home. I love rustic wire baskets, chippy wood things, etc… it just gives me a warm, cozy feeling! I am always inspired by you!

  5. I grew up on a working farm in England, our farmhouse was mentioned in the Doomsday book, so very very old, it was a big rambling house with roaring log fires and no central heating. The kitchen was a huge family room, the heart of the house, in fact we had two kitchens, the back kitchen where food was prepared and kept, the main kitchen with a huge oak table and a big oil fired aga, always running, always war with two chairs on either side. This is where anyone could sit in outdoor farm clothes, it was a farmhouse kitchen after all! But the aga wasn’t just for warmth or for cooking. In the spring milk bottles would be permanently warming on the back ready for any orphan lambs, (we always had several to bottle feed), and there was always something warm simmering in the bottom oven. Today farmhouse style to me says relaxed and comfortable and above all really welcoming and homey, a real family home.

  6. oops sorry, not war on either side but always with two chairs on either side, not sure where that word crept in! So happy my comments are working again! have a lovely weekend xx

  30. Yvonne, this is such a charming and reminiscent post. My grandparents on both sides lived in farmhouses and worked their lands. One grandmother had a below ground root cellar where blue canning jars were filled year-round with the families food supply, along with burlap wrapped potatoes, and other perishables. All 10 elements you,ve mentioned, I remember being in both farm-houses. Grandma,s “wood walls” were so cool to us kids, our walls at home were mostly wallpapered. All the farmhouses had porches on them, there was always someone sitting on their front porch for us to wave too, driving to Grandma,s house. I loved the smell of their wood burning stove. Heat for cold days and just the wonderful smell of anything baking. These aren,t around anymore, I don,t think, or very hard to find. It just brought back a child-hood memory of the love and warmth I felt when we visited our grandparents. Thank you for a beautiful return to my family & memories of the past.

  31. My husband and I rented a farmhouse from an elderly aunt early in our marriage. Loved everything about it, with the exception being the oil bill. Now some forty plus years later, our son and young family are renting that same place. It remains a beautiful setting to enjoy God’s creation.

  32. I think that you nailed it…and your home is so authentically farmhouse with nothing trendy about it!

  33. Love the farmhouse style. I have been putting that farmhouse sink on my wish list for years.

  34. We’re having a new kitchen built on the back of the house, and yes, white cabinets, beadboard and a farmhouse sink are in the works. But, I’ve got to have my roosters tucked in here and there!!! Thanks for the additional ideas.

  35. I love all your out side views. Your kitchen is my favorite room to look at in your home….so pretty !

  36. Carol Ann says:

Love your farmhouse sink Maybe some day?

I also like lots of baskets and old kitchen utensils – along with great-grandma’s dough bowl. Thank you for some new ideas, too.

  37. Phyllis Piontkowski says:

Love this Farmhouse look idea. I was born & raised on a farm; so, I’m a farm girl at heart. Worked in the fields, milked cows, slopped hogs, and whatever needed to be done on the farm. I still remember when I was a young girl growing up on the farm, we had a Farmhouse look……it was neat.
Oh, by the way, LOVE your site.

  38. I think farmhouse style is a staple in design. It will always radiate comfort, simplicity, and nostalgia. It allows us to be comfortable while feeling stylish. I love it.

  39. Everything looks so clean and crisp! Part of it is due to the simplicity, part due to the black and white. Love the mason jars and tin flower containers!

  40. Maggie Nelson says:

Thank you for the ideas to get the farmhouse style. Last year we painted the kitchen’s cabinets white and I love them. We don’t have a front porch to sit on but we have a big cover patio all in white and have a porch swing where we sit and look at my back yard that I’m proud to said is beautiful specially at spring time when everything is blooming. Now I get fresh flowers from the market and put them in white jar or pitcher and place it in the kitchen’s island .

  41. Dorinda Selke says:

Yvonne – in my opinion there is nothing more beautiful than farmhouse style ! It’s a cozy way of living ? hugs, Dorinda

  51. Judge me by my likes and decor diversity not by my contemporary beach style 😉
I love farmhouse style and neutral colors thru ought but this ole gal loves color too…thats what makes us all unique and appreciative of others style. Love your blogs you put together so well…thank you

  53. Darlene James says:

Farmhouse style is charming warm and that special home you never want to leave. Yvonne, you have the farmhouse look with a touch of elegance fine tuned for sure!

  54. Some wonderful and lovely ideas/suggestions. My Wee Abode is a studio apartment above a garage that has been converted to a one-bedroom “Wee Abode”. Because I rent, most of these ideas are not something I can implement, however, I’m learning to work with what I have! Open shelving and a Hoosier style baker’s cabinet that is being used for extra storage and counter space in my tiny kitchen, neutral tones and farmhouse decor. Hoping to be able to show tiny tastes of Heaven through my home… wanting to bring glory to Him through it all (just as you are)!

P.S. Just picked up my first real piece of ironstone this weekend at the Salvation Army… $6 bowl! Ironstone seems to be harder to come by here in So Cal, especially for a bargain price! 😉

  55. Tho I don’t have farmhouse decorating in my home, I love yours!
