My farmhouse kitchen is getting it’s summer face on! I’ve been putting away the spring decorations and clearing off the counters! Summer is a very busy time in the kitchen! Lots of canning and freezing and cooking and entertaining and family dinners! Summer in my kitchen is almost magical!!! Most of my days are spent going from the garden to the kitchen!

Today is FARMHOUSE FRIDAY! And the farmhouse girls are talking about our kitchen! I love being a part of this group! They will be sharing their farmhouse kitchens tomorrow so make sure you stop back and I’ll have links to their farmhouse posts!

FARMHOUSE KITCHEN -white cabinets-soapstone counters-stonegableblog.comThe kitchen at StoneGable is a working kitchen! But who says a working kitchen can’t be attractive and functional! And because it’s a MODERN farmhouse kitchen I mix modern elements with farmhouse charm. I always say, “Every home needs a little farmhouse”. It’s true… especially in the kitchen!

The soapstone countertops and sink are a modern take on farmhouse style! The look is pure farmhouse but the soapstone is a fabulous modern convenience!

I get so many questions about my soapstone counters and sink. We searched through tons (literally) of soapstone slabs for the perfect ones to create our counters and sink. I wanted slabs that didn’t look like a zebra. I know the veining in soapstone is coveted, but I wanted a more solid look with just whispers of veining in my kitchen.

Soapstone is inert and non porous so it will not stain and is impervious to hot or cold.

It can scratch and dink, but it takes a whole lot to mark it! I have never had to sand out a scratch yet and I have had these countertops for 4 years.

Black soapstone is really a light grey when left untreated. To give my countertops that rich black shine, I rub them down with mineral oil once a month.

Here at StoneGable we love to eat garden to table… like these asparagus that are in season right now. The asparagus is growing like weeds! They can grow a few inches in one day! Bobby goes out to the asparagus patch every day and brings in a big handful! They usually go right on the grill! Scrumptious!

The newest addition to my kitchen is the MENU chalkboard above my cooktop. I found a chalkboard that fits perfectly into the space.

I’m not sure that chalkboards were used in American farmhouses in the past, but they are trending right now and have that homespun look that we relate to farmhouse style!

I keep my oils for cooking and different salts and pepper for seasoning in this big divided galvanized container. Galvanized metal is another way to bring a little farmhouse style to a kitchen (or any room) .

A pair of large white lanterns decorate the island. These were a steal at the Pottery Barn Outlet for $49.00 each!!! Score! I like to use large scale items on the island instead of lots of small things. Large decor pieces are dramatic and make a statement! These lanterns make my whole kitchen glow in the evening!

  1. Your kitchen is beautiful, Yvonne. We recently moved from Florida to Mississippi. I miss my beautiful black and white kitchen in the Florida house, but the new owners love it. Maybe I’ll be able to remodel this kitchen within the next year or two — natural wood cabinets, odd layout, textured white counters – yuck! The good news is that it’s big and has LOTS of storage. I love your posts.

    1. At least you have a footprint to work with Judy. I have an aesthetically pleasing kitchen with a terrible layout. The pathetic thing about that is it was apparent to me before we bought the house. Pretty is as pretty does, as my Mother would say.

  2. You live less than 50 miles from me. I live in Easton, PA. Love your style.

    1. I student taught in Bangor and have been to Easton many times! Beautiful area.

  3. Melanie Nieberding says:

Yvonne your kitchen is beautiful! Love everything you do. Keep it coming! Have to have those clay pots. Where can we purchase those?

    1. Hi Melanie,
I got regular clay pots and painted them. I’ll be doing a diy soon!

  4. Linda Ann says:

Love your kitchen! I’m struggling with the Farmhouse style in my kitchen. We moved from an 1920’s colonial to a 50’s split level 2 years ago and the kitchen is small and square. We have gotten the awful blue and pink wallpaper down, got a small round drop-leaf table and wall shelf with cubbies and hooks from Peaceful Valley Furniture. I’m trying to give it that warm feel. Just can’t redo the countertops at this point….it’s a work in progress!

  5. Karen VanLoo says:

I just LOVE your kitchen! It’s my favorite room in your house. I also love the chalkboard above the stove. Perfect!

  6. Oh how I love your true farmhouse kitchen….In my next house, I want to incorporate those gorgeous soapstone counters. Love those lanterns that make such a beautiful statement….Will have to check out that shop in Intercourse the next time I am there as I love that coffee sign…perfect for my “coffee room” …. have a great day Yvonne!!!

    1. Shirley, you were there with me. When you came to visit with Mary Alice I took the two of you there. Ready for another trip here?

  7. Great idea for covering the backsplash over your stovetop! Love it! It’s so cute! How do you keep it from getting spattered when you’re cooking? Do you just move it off to the side? Your house is so warm and inviting. Thanks for sharing with us all!

    1. Hi Erin,
I let it get splattered. The ON THE MENU and the days of the week were written in a white sharpie pen and only the menu itself is in chalk. I wipe it down weekly. Look for an upcoming Menu Chalkboard diy!

      1. Clever thought to use the white sharpie! Thanks!

  8. I L.O.V.E. Your kitchen! The soapstone is beautiful…it makes your kitchen stand out and not just stark white.

  9. Yvonne, I love your kitchen! The MacKenzie-Childs accessories look fantastic, as do the galvanized items, not to mention the greens. I remember you saying you weren’t happy with your stove backsplash – is that chalkboard positioned in front, or did you tear that out? Either way, it looks great. Love the modern farmhouse look you have going on. Have a great Memorial Day weekend.
    Rita

    1. Hi Rita! The blackboard is in front of the ugly backsplash. I’m happy with it right now… but I’m sure I’ll rip it out at some point!

  10. Your kitchen just says “Come on in and sit a while”. Inviting and comfortable. All you need is banana bread and some tea and I’m there.

  11. Sylvia Marie says:

Such happy place to spend so much time in.I too, miss my black and white kitchen in Fl. But… Now I’ve gone to primitive and really like it!!!!!!
A much smaller kitchen,so I have to KEEP the clutter to a minimum. 🙂

  12. Good Morning Yvonne ~
Your kitchen is so inviting ~ and beautiful ~
Your touches are just picture perfect. I love the rods you have on the beadboard holding your cups.
    Where did you get them.

I was just visiting my sister in Henryville, near The Promise Land in PA. Do you live far from there?
I would love to meet you one day ~ Maybe next time I am visiting ~
    Have a wonderful day.
    Rose

    1. Hi Rose, the rod and hooks that hold my coffee cups came from Ikea! Very cheap and full of decor appeal. I looked up The Promise Land and it’s on the other side of our state. Beautiful, mountains out there!

  13. What can I say that hasn’t already been spoken!
    Bring it on Yvonne!!

  14. Your kitchen is fabulous, Yvonne! It shouts out inviting! I keep going back to it! I absolutely LOVE Farmhouse style !

  15. Loving My Life - Kim Edwards says:

I love your kitchen! It is absolutely inviting and so people friendly! I have always wanted to live on a farm and have a farm house. But, I guess I am stuck living in the city. However, I plan on remaking my kitchen to have that “farm house” feel in the city. Thank you for all the inspiration!

  16. Oh boy, have you ever inspired me! My kitchen is more of a French farmhouse style but I still feel it’s missing something. Your post gave me some great ideas. I still have lots of goodies packed away and need to get them out and displayed. Have a great weekend!

  17. Your “Daily Grind” coffee sign looks exactly like my “Featured Presentation” sign that is hanging over the big TV in the great room. Aren’t these fun? I got mine at Tuesday Morning.

  18. I really miss On the Menu Monday

  19. Your kitchen is amazing Yvonne! Love your new chalkboard sign, it does fit perfectly behind your cooktop…so nice!
    Blessings,
    Cindy

  20. your kitchen is gorgeous! I like the contrasting white cabinets with the black countertop. I like your sprinkled Mackenzie child’s throughout 🙂 I also love your piggy head over the stove; I once saw an antique one but it was beyond my price range. I’ll keep lookin’. Can’t wait for tomorrow’s kitchens!

    1. Sometimes Decor Steals has this handsome pig head and they are VERY affordable!!!

  21. Yvonne, your beautiful kitchen is my favorite blog kitchen. I miss my black and white Illinois kitchen, so I’ll just pretend that yours is mine. Your entire home is amazing.

  22. Cindy Rasley says:

Very nice! I have a farm in Boise,Idaho area and my look is more rustic! Lots of brick and cracked tiles! Warm brown woods with granite isaland! Wanted butcher block but got talked out of it! Love the soapstone! I like the clean look and all your galvenized pieces! I use those too along with old antique white cupboards and white linens on my farm tables to add brightness! Thanks for the tour! Your kitchen looks great!Cindy

  23. Hi Yvonne- I just found your blog and loving it. My husband and I lived in Bucks County ( Doylestown) to be exact and love Pennsylvavia…. Have you ever been to Carousel Farms . It’s a lavender farm I think you would love it. One of my faves. Quick question. Where did you find that gorgeous light hanging over your sink.. Really gives your kitchen a unique feel..

    1. Hi Maggie! Welcome to the StoneGable family! I love Doylestown. I’ll have to check out Carousel Farms. The light came from Ballard Designs.

      1. My husband bought enough lavender products for a year.. We loved all of them. They also sell their products in Lambertville at the Stockton Market. His book is available for sale also. His home is gorgeous and they also do tours..anyway highly recommend for a fun thing to see. Moravian Tile Works is very unique also…love your blog. Maggie

  24. Michelle E says:

My kitchen is being remodled as I type. I gave a photo of your stove area to my cabinet builder to recreate in my kitchen. I LOVE your kitchen and you have been my inspiration for the remodel. Thanks for all of the great ideas.

    1. Awwww Michelle. So nice to know! I hope you have a fabulous kitchen!

  25. Yvonne, beautiful post and BEAUTIFUL kitchen! My favorites are the soapstone counters and the huge lanterns on the island. I can just imagine your kitchen all lit up in the evening with those. We’ll be moving to Maine soon, and I’m getting so much inspiration for our new home! Thanks for sharing our handcrafted kitchen utensils… so thrilled you love your new spoon!

  26. Marlene Stephenson says:

your kitchen is wonderful, i wish i had known you last year when i redid my kitchen, but i will love what i have and work with it. Thanks for all the ideas.

  27. Nancy at Lake Stevens says:

Yvonne, each time I look at the photos of your kitchen I find something new to fall in love with. It is so gorgeous. Is that beadboard I see as your backsplash? How has it held up for you? I have beadboard in a wonderful china cabinet in my family room adjacent to my kitchen Wouldn’t
beadboard look great in the kitchen too.
Have a glorious Memorial Day weekend.

  28. Your farmhouse kitchen is beautiful. I love all the pictures that you post! Even though I can’t make any permanent changes to the kitchen in our rental, your photos inspire me to use what I have (and what I find) to add touches that will add a farmhouse feel. Thank you for sharing!

  29. So many new ideas for my black and white kitchen! I am in love with that galvanized floor shelf unit at the end of the cabinet? Is it a recent find?

  30. I always love visiting your pretty farm house kitchen. So in love with those counters.

  31. Sherry Myers says:

What more can be said?! It is obvious your kitchen is the heart of your home. Thank you for sharing your heart! BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
    Blessings,
    Sherry

  32. Great post, I like what you did with the black board, and I crushing on the basil plants, they are just two cute. Thanks for the tip on on the wooden spoons. The lanterns on the island look great and sounds like fun to have them light up the kitchen.. I like how you used the galvanized caddies, as that helped me visualized them for use in my kitchen.
    Be blessed
    Pam

  33. Love your kitchen and all the homey touches. My new kitchen is not farmhouse but I sure am looking forward to getting in and using it. It does appear that the whole farmhouse look is at a height in popularity right now. Always enjoy stopping by and reading and seeing your beautiful posts. Happy weekend!

  34. I love your kitchen too. I am thinking about getting soapstone countertops and sink. The black and white kitchen is so classic to me……

  35. I love your kitchen and love to look at every detail when you write a post on it. I am swooning over those lanterns and can not wait for your DIY chalkboard. I will definitely be back Friday for more farmhouse kitchen.

  36. Mildred Hoppe says:

Where did you find the galvanized caddy holding the oils, salts, vinegars, etc?
Love the lanterns on the island

  37. I love that daily grind sign!!! Well, your whole kitchen actually. The soapstone always reminds me of Chemistry lab in college. Love it!

  38. Tina Dodson says:

    Oh,Yvonne!
What an inspiration you are to me! First of all,I had no idea they had a Basil tree, that is darling! I just love it,,and I LOVE your old Coffee sign,,too cute,,well,I love it all,,you have such a talent,,I sure wish we had a Pottery Barn outlet!
Happy Memorial Day Weekend,,and thanks for your inspiration!

    Love,
    Tina

  39. Tina Sipe says:

I always love your kitchen!! I wish all of my oak cabinets were white instead. Your kitchen is my dream!

  40. I adore your kitchen. I spend so much time in mine, that I wish I could copy your kitchen EXACTLY! The soapstone counters are so beautiful and useful. Where did you get the galvanized tub that you use for your oils, salts, & pepper? I love it! Finally, I think having BIG items on the center island is a great idea. They are much easier to move if you need the counter space than a bunch of small items in a vignette.
    Best,
    Michelle from simplysantabarbara.blogspot.com

  41. I found your farmhouse kitchen pictures on Pinterest and I’m in love! I’m hoping to build my next home within the year and will definitely consider the soapstone – it’s beautiful! Also love your stove alcove – would like to see the complete layout of your kitchen (like where is the sink in relation to the stove/refrigerator?) It looks so cozy and easy to work in. I’ve read some of your blog and have enjoyed the beautiful spirit you express in your posts.

  42. I love your style! What type of plant is the topiary in the white clay pot? I love the way it looks.

  43. Yvonne, your kitchen is absolutely beautiful and inspiring. Just curious, where is your microwave?

  44. Yvonne, love your kitchen! I’d like to know where you got your shaded dependent light in the kitchen? Thank you

    1. Hi Jane,
I got the drum lampshade from Ballard Designs. I love it and it was so easy to install! We had a spotlight there and got the kit to transform it to a hanging chandy! Hope this helps.

  45. Oh it’s just gorgeous – absolutely gorgeous !!!
That counter top is so striking and is perfect – and that sink ?
    O.M.G. that sink !
    xox

  46. I ADORE the Daily Grind sign! Hum mm, may have to DIY this one!

  47. Love your kitchen Yvonne, it’s absolutely gorgeous!!

  48. Where did you get your cart/stand beside your island?

  49. i came across your site on pinterest and am loving it! Curious where the white mugs hanging under the cabinets are from?

    1. Hi Amalia, Welcome to the StoneGable family!!!! The mugs came from HomeGoods a couple of years ago. So glad you found me!!!

  50. Beautiful kitchen. I too have soapstone on my counters, best ever, look and feel. I have tow different types of finishings done (I have an L shaped counter top, so you can’t see that they are different but you can feel it should you feel both at the same time, I did this so I could try out and see which one look/feel better over time), one is smooth and the other is leather finish, I much prefer the leather finish, so that is what we will use again in our house we are to build eventually.
Thank you for inviting us into your lovely house!

  51. Where can I purchase a round galvanized caddy like you have? Sharon

  52. Beautiful kitchen- great inspiration!! Where did you buy your white clay pot that the topiary is in? I have to find that ASAP! 🙂

    1. Hi Emily, I made that pot. It’s a terracotta pot I painted white and traced a number on it.

  53. Mary Beth says:

You’re kitchen is lovely! My husband and I just built a home in central PA and are still finding our style. I was wondering where the coffee mug hanger came from?

  54. Natalie Darr says:

Where did you find the pig head? 🙂

    1. I came from a shop that is now closed. But I know Decor Steals features it now and then.

  55. Hi Yvonne,

Love your kitchen! What is your backsplash made out of? It looks like beadboard. Is it hard to keep clean?

    Thank you!

    Jennifer
    BellaGrey Designs

  56. Hi Yvonne Iam so happy you are back hope your feeling better. Love your kitchen its is so nice I get a lot of ideas from you thank you .

  57. Sherri Crawford says:

I love how clean & fresh your kitchen looks. Would you share with me what you’ve used as your backsplash? Thanks

  58. I love the menu and the black and white theme!! Gorgeous!

  59. I simply love the farm kitchen idea. In this blog there was nothing that I did not love. The color use, the placement of the decors, the ideas, simply stunning. I now want my kitchen to look like this!!!!

  60. Hi I know this is an old post but it gets a lot of visits because it’s a GORGEOUS kitchen. Can you tell me what faucet you have and what color it is? Hard to find black with a pull down spray…is your’s ORB?

Am contemplating painting my cabinets white, I’ve got the black countertops and sink, then just need to update backsplash and faucet which is junk. Love your inspiring blog.

  61. Priscilla Connell says:

    As always, great ideas!

  62. Hello, Yvonne. I just ran into your blog via Pinterest and I have to admit that I am almost certain that I have pinned all of your pictures. LOL. Any way, I wanted
thank you, like many others have, for sharing your beautiful home with us. I am currently renovating my home. Bad timing for renovations, however, since I live in Redland, Florida and we were affected by Hurricane Irma and one of the tornadoes that came with her. Prior to the storm, we had walls knocked out in our home, removed the kitchen cabinets in preparation for new flooring through the house, and had scaffolds in the middle of my living room. Definitely not the best way to experience a storm. lol We just had our power restored yesterday. Pinterest was my escape from the reality of the aftermath today. Your blog was God sent. Thank you for that!! I spent the last hour looking throughout the web for the Mason Jar Holder/Tower/Tier that you have pictured on your kitchen island. I fell in love with it , but I have been unsuccessful in finding it. 🙁 I hesitated in sending you a message in fear that I would not receive a response, but decided to try anyway. Can you PLEASEEEE tell me where I can purchase it? Thank you, once again, for bringing a little light to my day with your blog. God bless you and your family!

    1. What you are looking for is a French bottle dryer. I found mine at a local shop. Sorry I can’t help you there. But you might look online at Antique Farmhouse or Painted Fox or Decor Steals. They carry things like that.

  63. Jacqueline says:

Where did you get your white pitcher from?

    1. I find most of my white pitchers at HomeGoods. They have lots of great designs at very reasonable prices!

  64. Linda Towles says:

hi….i am redoing my kitchen and the faucet is really a tough decision…..i will have the white cabinets like yours with the black cup pulls and and a black soapstone counter…but still debating between a black or stainless faucet ….want a pull down but wondering if stainless would look as good as black since there are so many more choices in stainless and if the black is just too much black in one place….comments??? faucets links you think would look good??

    1. That is a tough question, Linda. I have black pulls and soapstone too. Right now I have an oil-rubbed bronze faucet that looks very nice. I think a stainless will stick out too much. But remember what really matters is what you like!

  65. what color paint is on your cabinets

    1. Hi Joanne, the kitchen cabinets are Atrium White from Benjamin Moore.

  66. HI, I’m Joyce, I have been following you for a while but thought it was time I introduced myself. I’ve been trying to get my blog off the ground for a bit and you are a great inspiration to me.

I love the black and white color combination

    take care

    1. Hi Joyce, I think blogging is a wonderful hobby or career. God’s blessings on your blog!
