SWEET TEA AND WATERMELON ON THE BACK PORCH

FARMHOUSE BACK PORCH-A little summer table-stonegableblog.com

The north western corner of our farmhouse porch is a great place to relax!  Do you have a special place you like to hide away when you need a little time to yourself? You can find me on my porch swing or here, sitting at the little mesh table overlooking the fields beyond. I’ve poured some homemade sweet tea and cut up some ice cold watermelon… so come meet me on the back porch!

Welcome to my back porch! This is the place I go to spend time with God and do devotions every morning… at least when the weather is not oppressive. It’s where Bobby and I have dinner in the evening and where I often blog.

When we built StoneGable we had no idea how windy it would be on our land. The big north and west winds roll across the field and often assaults this corner of the house! But when the winds are quiet this is absolutely the best part of our whole wrap-around porch!!!

Because my home is a MODERN American Farmhouse I decided to make the porch bright and dramatic and filled with easy care pieces.

The amount of dirt we get from the fields all around us is nothing short of biblical! I can use the blower and the hose on the porch in the morning and by afternoon it will need a good wash down again. So I have learned to use only very sturdy, easy to clean things on the porch! I just washed it before taking these pictures.

The farm field over the railing was planted with rye early this spring and now it’s ready to be harvested. It’s such a gorgeous golden color and is a stunning contrast with all the green!

What’s a porch without pots of flowers? I have two of these green pots on my porch. One here and one by the laundry room door. I’ll share that end of the porch sometime soon.

My table and chairs on the porch and patio are really nothing special at all! We got them a Lowe’s on sale. Because of the wind and elements my furniture is exposed to I decided to buy all mesh type outdoor furniture. I’ve never had a piece blow away and they’re not so heavy that they can’t be moved around.  And we move them around a lot!

I added a fun indoor/outdoor rug, that I found on Amazon, to this area and put comfy black and white cushions on the chairs. And, oh yes, some green indoor outdoor accent pillows.

The curtains on the back porch are from our local Pottery Barn outlet. They have worn so well. We have had them for years and they have gone through so many summer thunderstorms! Thunderstorms can be very severe in our area, sometimes leading to tornados! Decades ago we actually saw a tornado, but it did not come near our home. These porch curtains have been blowing straight out from the porch during a thunderstorm more than once when they got loose from their tiebacks. What a sight!

I like bringing indoor elements to outdoor living. Right now I’m working on a very fun chandy for over the table! Look for a post about it around July 4th.

The table’s set for a little healthy snack. I love love love watermelon! Watermelon and “Courtley” enamelware from McKenzie Childs are a perfect match.

Oh YUMMY!

Instead of pulling out my favorite white ironstone and creating an all white vignette… I used a tad of ironstone mixed with some fun, stylized flower plates and napkins and a vintage looking vase! A big pop of color comes from the green handled flatware. I’ve been longing to fill my summer spaces with lots of color lately!

  2. Oh how beautiful is that setting on the porch and the gorgeous setting on the table….my heart skipped a beat when I saw the MacKenzie Childs enamelware….so, so beautiful….such a bright and happy table perfect for a break from the summer heat. Have a great weekend Yvonne!

  3. Love this. Just perfect! Will you be at the annual MacKenzie-Child’s Barn Sale? I will! It’s July 16-19 in Aurora, N.Y.

I love it Yvonne! What a perfect place to relax and take in all of your blessings.

  6. Your porch looks so relaxing! A great place to do your devotionals. I have the same dust/dirt problem. I am CONSTANTLY hosing down my porch and siding. And I swear that the farmer next door waits until he sees me cleaning off my porch and then runs over here to start plowing or spraying who knows what. It’s a constant battle 🙂

  7. Just wondering if you have a sweet tea recipe you would like to share?

  8. Rebecca Hively says:

I can SO relate to the wind on your porch. Like you, we live in the country and have a wrap around porch with a gazebo and fields on three sides of us. We are on the top of a hill with spectacular sunsets and just as spectacular wind! So we opted to stain our home brown which helps cut down on the appearance of the dust.

  9. Melissa Leach says:

Thanks for having us! What a great spot to speak with the Lord 🙂

  10. Love your back porch, I love to eat out side. We are renting and they have put a ceiling fan outside ,
which make It very comfortable outside to enjoy sitting and eating.
    Have a great day.
    Pam

  11. What a cute spot! It looks perfect! And that watermelon looks delicious!

  12. Beautiful! I’m so jealous of your gorgeous porch 🙂 Especially with all the bright flowers and fruit! So summery. Thanks for sharing!

  13. Beautiful porch and I love the dramatic colors. I added a front porch to my house this year and that’s where I love to sit and look out over my garden. I gave a back porch and might be out there more in a bit since it is getting painted and stained this week. The porch overlooks the koi pond.

  14. I would be spending my morning and evenings out there, too.
What a LOVELY place to spend quiet time with God. You
are very blessed to have a slice of Heaven on earth. Wish
    you were my neighbor! 🙂

    God bless you!

  15. Another beautiful setting my friend. You created a welcoming place to watch the time pass. We have some pretty strong winds here too. I invite you to share this post at the Thursday Favorite Things blog hop. You can link up through Saturday at midnight. Hugs!

  16. Your display is beautiful Yvonne! I love the contrast between the black check and vibrant colors of the watermelon and flowers. I would lose myself on your porch and get nothing done. Lol Thanks for the share!

    1. Hi LuAnn, I don’t need much of an excuse to not get anything done.

  17. Cheryl Ann says:

Yvonne, thank you for this stunning tablescape. I’m inspired!

  18. What a beautiful and peaceful place you have to enjoy! I was wondering how you hooked your outdoor curtains to your your porch? Can’t find a curtain rod as wide as we need it?

    1. Hi Fran, I got a curtain rod especially made for outdoor curtains. I think they came from Restoration Hardware.

  19. Yvonne, such a beautiful spot to sit. I am sure glad I had some watermelon in the refrigerator or after reading your post I would have had to go to the store to buy one. You always make everything look so inviting and appealing,

Nice to hear I’m not the only one who has to contend with dusty fields. At the moment we are surrounded by safflower which is in bloom and it is beautiful. But it won’t be long and we will harvest and disc, then I will look at dirt for the rest of the year. I also wash my porch and enjoy using it daily. Thank you for the beautiful photos and your great ideas. You have one of my favorite blogs which I visit daily.

  21. Hi, Yvonne, you’re set up a gorgeous vignette on your porch. And what a view – it reminds me of my childhood growing up next to grandmother’s farm. Hubby and I have a large deck on the back of our house, and we have a Lowe’s gazebo set up in the summer. It’s a great place to eat dinner when the heat and humidity aren’t off the charts. I love listening to the birds chirp in our back yard – bet you enjoy that sound, too. Thanks for sharing your gorgeous wrap-around porch decor.

  22. Just discovered your blog through a link. I love how you’ve used your black mesh outdoor furniture. Like you I live in a windy area and have settled to the same outdoor furniture. They started out green and I painted them a couple of years ago. I also have some black metal with brown mesh fabric loungers – they’re light enough to carry here and there but heavy enough to stay in place…and they’ve weathered pretty well so far (had them for a few years). We’ve gone through so many umbrellas that we could have paid for a wooden pergola by now.
One horrible issue that I deal with every day is sweeping up the spider webs. We live a mile from the Saginaw Bay off of Lake Huron and had no idea that there could ever be more than a few spiders to occasionally deal with. I can say that mosquitoes aren’t a big problem, so there is that. I tend to keep my decor simple so that I can easily clean up.

    1. Hi Jenny, Welcome to the StoneGable family!!!! I also have a huge spider issue. I just hose down the webs right along with the dirt.

  23. Cyndee Jones says:

Hi Yvonne, As always, your posts make a person feel as though they are sipping a cool dink with you on the back porch of your beautiful home!! Keep up the good work!

When I can, I so enjoy our front porch, whether alone or with my Hubs, or with neighbors passing by on their evening walk – home, how lucky are we!! And…to make it extra special, the grandchildren might happen by, then the fun really begins!

    Have a great summer!!

  24. What a lovely little place, so warm and inviting and I LOVE McKenszie Child and your pieces fit perfectly there. I can’t wait to find my “cozy place” in our new home. Just not sure where it’s going to be but bet it won’t take me long to figure it out. Love stopping by!

  25. I absolutely love your back porch, everything is so perfect and inviting. I have a question, where did you find your vase and stand with the wood handles? I love it! Again, everything is perfectly gorgeous!

  26. I love everything about this, Yvonne! Everything!
The bright colors, flowers, and simple menu. Looks like the perfect place to gather with a few girl friends and enjoy Summer’s best.
    Thanks for the inspiration :0)
    Suzanne

  27. Love your porch! Is it 6 ft. wide or 8 ft. wide? Thanks!

  28. Yvonne,
Black, white and green are my all time favorite tablescaping theme!!!
I adore the PoP of the limey green in your accent pillows!!!
The “Courtley” enamelware from McKenzie Childs is a perfect accent for your tablescape, dear friend!!!
It’s Summertime. . .and the livin’ at Stone Gable is easy, indeed!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  29. Wow! Another beautiful spot in your home Yvonne. I love the cushions in your chairs; do you by chance recall where you purchased them?

  30. Ann Fleck says:

Your style is amazing!! I truly enjoy your style!
Thank You for sharing with all of us.

  31. Dianne Lanier says:

I am SO ready for sweet tea and watermelon! Thanks for sharing your lovely space.

  32. Julie Monroe says:

What a sweet spot for early morning coffee with your daily reading. A great little spot for a light lunch, even dinner at sunset.
Please share some fresh new inspiration for tablescape and vignettes. Especially when you share some key elements with where we can purchase to make some too. Like a beautiful tray, candle holders, dishes etc. That’s when you shined so bright styling for seasons, holidays and occasions.
