I think Mantels are hard to decorate. At least mine is! It’s long and the shelf is quite narrow. But I’ve figured out an easy “defalt” mantel decor and now I can make small changes from season to season and from year to year and have a great looking, easy-peasy mantel. When a mantel is well decorated and has great style it compliments the whole room it’s in. That’s my goal… creating a beautiful mantel… EVERY TIME!
Here’s how my default mantel looks before I tweaked it for fall…
And here’s how it looks with just a couple changes and in candlelight…
The clock stayed, the shutters and lamps too. These large pieces anchor the whole mantel. I think anchor pieces should be big so they can be seen. My clock and chippy shutters fill the wall space between the top of the mantel and the crown molding.
The best thing we did for the mantel was the addition of the shutters. They are the real chippy deal. When we got them they were much too long for the mantel but Bobby retrofit them. Here’s a tutorial on HOW TO RESIZE SHUTTERS.
Another defalt on my mantel are the cream colored pitchers. I removed one and added sprigs of faux fall leaves to the others. In about a week I’ll be filling the pitchers with real branches from our trees. I’ll make sure to share some pictures on Instagram!
Don’t you love that little simple black stool? It works like magic to vary the heights of the pitchers!!!
I added a few more white pumpkins and square glass containers filled with Indian corn and candles to finish the look!
I think two big mistakes people make when decorating mantels is to add too much and to add things that are too small! My mantel mantras are “GO BIG OR GO HOME” and “EDIT, EDIT, EDIT”. Which, for me, usually means removing a few smallish things. Mantels look best uncluttered!
Here’s the mantel in my fall family room…
