DECORATING WITH NATURAL ELEMENTS FOR FALL

Must-have elements for fall. How to use quintessential fall elements in your decor!

Fall decorating is all about bringing the outside in. It’s a time to use soft, warm elements in our homes. I think fall is my very favorite season to decorate because I love how simple and organic and warm fall can be! Oh, and it is sooo BEAUTIFUL! Today I’m sharing some easy organic must-haves to help you decorate for fall! Today is Practically Speaking. Let’s talk about practical, easy ways to use things that spill over with  fall beauty!

Are you thinking… “It’s not Saturday. Practically Speaking goes live on Saturday”. You are right… it is not Saturday, but from now on Practically Speaking will go live on Friday. I have a surprise for you on Saturdays from now on! Come back tomorrow and see!

So let’s take a practical and pretty look at “all things natural” for fall decorating!

PUMPKINS

Must-have elements for fall. How to use quintessential fall elements in your decor!

I think fall can be represented best by a pumpkin! I love them all! Big, small, fat, tall, orange, white or blue! Give me a pumpkin and it becomes the centerpiece of any decor!

Use one big beautiful show stopper pumpkin or go for a mini pumpkin patch of smaller ones when you decorate!

BITTERSWEET

Must-have elements for fall. How to use quintessential fall elements in your decor!

Bittersweet is a wild-growing, brambly invasive plant that has wound its way around the hearts of fall lovers. But don’t grow it in your garden. It will take everything over. Most states have declared bittersweet a nuisance plant, but it still grows wild along hedgerows and fields.

It grows wild here in Lancaster County so I can find it ever year. If you don’t have it where you live, go faux (like the bittersweet in the picture above). Get the best looking faux bittersweet you can find. It might be an investment, but you can use if for years! I probably have had this bittersweet for over a decade!

MUMS

Must-have elements for fall. How to use quintessential fall elements in your decor!

Mums are at their very best in the fall. They look like bushes when they are mature. Their blooms come in so many fabulous colors and they are very very hardy! I buy pots of them for inside and out. When my inside mums begin to look a little spent I plant them outside so they will bloom the next year.

One little pet peeve of mine… don’t display mums in the plastic containers they come in. Put the container into a pretty bowl, champagne bucket, basket, urn or some nice container!

APPLES

Must-have elements for fall. How to use quintessential fall elements in your decor!

I think apples are so overlooked! They are just as plentiful as pumpkins, maybe more, during fall! And they are just as pretty too! A bowl of juicy apples looks amazing… and colorful. And apples are readily available and inexpensive. Use apples to decorate this fall and them use them in a pie! YUM!

LEAVES

Must-have elements for fall. How to use quintessential fall elements in your decor!

I have a “thing” for fall leaves. I pick them off the ground like one would look for shells on a beach. I am fascinated with them. So using them in fall decor is a must!

Tuck real or faux or even leaves cut out of a book page here and there this fall. Leaves add that little extra interest to what you are decorating!

BASKETS

Must-have elements for fall. How to use quintessential fall elements in your decor!

Warm and textural, baskets bring a natural element to fall decor! I love their bark-ish finishes and shapes! Baskets are great ways to organize and contain things but they can be at the center fabulous fall decor too!

PINECONES

Must-have elements for fall. How to use quintessential fall elements in your decor!

Don’t just use pinecones when decorating for Christmas! Use them for fall too. They mix wonderfully with pumpkins, gourds, acorns and bits of bramble-and-stuff! They add tons of texture and depth and shape to fall decor.

Pinecones are my filler of choice. You can see how I use them to hold up and plump up arrangments HERE.

NUTS

thanksgiving-10-minute-decorating-300-x300-button-stonegableblog-2

Nuts work as fabulous filler too! My favorite are walnuts. They remind me of my childhood. I’d also put acorns in this group too! Tuck them into arrangments for an added layer of fall fun!

INDIAN CORN

Must-have elements for fall. How to use quintessential fall elements in your decor!

Indian corn is a colorful addition to fall decorating. Use it in arrangements, or make an impressive Indian corn wreath for your front door. You can see a tutorial HERE.

All of these natural elements are inexpensive and look amazing in fall decor! If you’re not using these now it might be the time to add them to your home.

What are you favorite natural fall elements and how do you use them to decorate?

  1. Bringing the outdoors in! Love these suggestions. Do you use faux acorns? I used real ones two years ago and it wasn’t a pleasant experience .

    1. Oh yes! If you use real acorns in decor you should bake them at 200 ° for about 30 minutes to get rid of any bugs!

  2. Mother Nature’s bounty inside…lovely

  3. Linda Ann says:

I just love the way you put things together. So pretty! I’ve been picking my pinecones up off the ground and they are so sticky. Is there anyway to get rid of that sappy stickiness ? I did invest in the faux acorns this year and I think they’ll look great. This is the weekend for fall decorating! Thanks for all the great ideas!

    1. If you bake pinecones in your oven on 200° for 2-=30 minutes the sap should not be a problem anymore!

Tracy -check her blog archives , she posted a template for the leaves a couple of weeks ago.

      1. Thanks Marilyn, I love when my reader help each other and interact!

    2. Another option I read online is to use autumn-shape cookie cutters, like leaves, acorns, etc and trace them for different shapes. Great tips, “Yvonne. Thanks!

    3. Bed, Bath and Betong has some great Deco Leaves, for $9.99 (use a 20% off coupon too) I was lucky enough to inherit some OLD OLD books and songbooks from my Mo-in-Law. The spines are all broken. Perfect for using stencils.
      Such wonderful ideas on here.

  6. Carol Davis says:

Autumn decorations are without a doubt my favorite. Just recently I think I realized why when my husband and I were talking about all the Halloween decorations at Home Depot. After a long hot, dry summer which is quite typical in this part of the country, they are a reminder that cooler and maybe wetter days are soon to arrive.

  7. Bringing the outside in always works well…love all of the tips and inspiration! Blessings, Pam @ Everyday Living

  8. Jan Purdin says:

What is more beautiful than what God has created?

    1. Amen! Unique and perfect always, Jan.

  9. I put Indian corn on my door every year and the blue birds always find it. I come home to find them half eatten! Eventually I just give in and hang them from my bird feeder. How do you keep them away from your wreath?

    1. You must have hungry birds! How sweet of you for feeding the birds, lol!

  10. I also use winter butternut squashes we have grown, for kitchen vignettes.

  11. No one in France decorates for the season, except for Christmas, but this is just so pretty, I am going to add a big bowl of apples to my kitchen table and start a trend here! You never know, maybe it will catch on!

Fall is my favorite time of year as well. I live in the Adirondacks in New York and in a few weeks it will be bursting with color. 20. Julie Maier says:

Using natural elements in my fall decorating is my favorite thing to do. I love that I don’t always have to jump in my car to go get that perfect filler – I can open my door, walk outside, and have tons of choices instantly – and cheaply! I love the idea of using pinecones in my fall decor. I’ve never thought of that – I have always just used them for my winter/Christmas decorating. I love the look and it makes perfect sense to use them in the fall. Thank you again, Yvonne, for more great ideas and inspiration!

  21. I embrace all that is Fall. from Sept. until Nov. 30th I am always looking for classic ideas so thank you for these.

    1. I’ve always loved Fall decor and especially so in the last few years when white pumpkins appeared on the scene. One of my favorite things to do is just take a walk along a country road and collect various weeds (that have flower heads), dried grasses, thistles, etc. then bring home and put in a country-looking jug and a steel French flower-bucket. Absolutely free and absolutely lovely!

Re decorating with apples, I like to do that too, however, I don’t like them losing their “crispness” so I fill my large bowl with faux ones then place a few real ones on top. The Dollar store “Granny Smiths” look REALLY real where I live and you can’t tell them apart until you actually go to remove one from the bowl.

  22. Love all your great ideas! This is my weekend to do some fall decorating!

  23. I adore the Indian corn wreath! If I had one on my door, the squirrels would eat the entire thing!

    Pat

  29. Beautiful ideas for Fall, Yvonne. It’s how I’ve always decorated, with as much natural elements as possible. Vegetables, fruits and leaves mix so well with antiques, and they make every room look elegant and chic.

  30. Candy J Weiford says:

Would have never thought of mums indoors. I will be working on this SOON! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Have a wonderful & blessed week-end, everyone.

  31. Martha Franks says:

Yvonne, all of your blogs are inspiring, but I think this is the best of all! I am so inspired! My grandson came and got my autumn decorations out of the attic for me and today I decorate using my faux pumpkins and plants and my other cute little scarecrows and other creatures. Then I’ll go to nursery for a few live plants to add. What a fun day this will be! Thanks for all your great blogs and facebook posts!

  32. Thanks for the beautiful post, fall is just bursting with vibrant and gorgeous colors!

  33. I love that corn wreath, it looks big!

  34. Your beautiful displays have me eager to start my fall decorating!

  35. Carol Elkins says:

I love these ideas! Your displays are so inspiring it makes me want to decorate for fall (which is hard when it’s still so hot here in Florida!).

  36. Yvonne,
You are the decorator extraordinaire in my opinion. If I’m ever stumped about what to do or use in my décor, I know exactly where to come every time! Leaves are beginning to turn here in Michigan. Nights are cooler now too. I love being out with the bright blue skies. Fall is just the best in Michigan!

  37. Mary Chris says:

Great ideas. Love the colors. The fall is so beautiful .

  38. I didn’t realize that you could bake the acorns. We have so many from our Oak tree in the back yard, so I will gather some this year and try it. I always bring in a few smaller mum plants for decoration around the fireplace. What a good idea for this post.

  39. I love the idea of bringing nature inside. God created this beautiful world for all of us to enjoy. Why leave these outdoors–bring them in!

  40. Beautiful pictures and ideas. I love how you repurpose the typical use of items…such as the pic with the acorns and nuts. I love the candle stick that supports the little white pumpkin. I have started to do this through your inspiration…it’s interesting how shopping in our own homes can keep the budget in check.

Today is a dreary but crisp day in Minnesota! LOVE FALL!!!!
Good day to make a trek out to the apple orchard – we have one within 10 minutes of our home.

  41. I love the way you combine items for beautiful home decor.

  42. I love fall decorating and especially the natural things like pumpkins and fall leaves. I’m also putting mums out on my front porch for a little color.

  43. Yvonne, thank you for the inspiration. I will put them to use. Pinecones and apples and pumpkins, oh my!

  44. Teresa Alexander says:

thank you for encouraging us to bring the outside in! I have started doing just that! 🙂

  45. I love the basket/wicker tray. It’s such a warm, earthy element to use in decorating. I use lemons to decorate during the summer, now is the perfect time to add apples and pumpkins. More ideas to play with. As always, you are brilliant! Thanks Yvonne!

  46. Martha Durick says:

I love the arrangements you do!

  47. As always, great ideas! I have begun my Fall decorating, too. I have loads of oak trees on my property, so acorns are always one of the items in my Fall decor. Have a blessed weekend!

  48. Dawn Womble says:

    Love all your ideas. Thanks!

  49. Yvonne… I think the bounty of nature in the fall is what makes decorating so much fun. There isn’t another season… though Christmas and greens is pretty special… that quite compares. I LOVE everything you’ve done. I swear we are kindred spirits. {{hugs}}

  50. Everything you do is so beautifully done. What a great talent you have for giving a home a beautiful, inviting and comfortable appearance .

  51. Decorating with natural elements never goes out of style and you have a gift for showing others the best way to do it. Cudos!

  52. I tried baking our large green and yellow “buck” acorns, and they turned dark! So I resorted to spraying them with a clear paint. They look nice and shiny, but I see that even doing that, they are starting to swivel up, I guess they are drying out! Anyway, I have been collecting them almost every day so I can use in table centerpieces at our Homecoming this weekend at church!
I hope they hold up until Sunday!
I love your fall everything! I am in NC and I wish we had bittersweet! I can’t even find the Faux in our hobby stores!!

  53. My friend gave me a beautiful blue Hubbard squash After it was done being displayed it got cooked – a double treat!!

  54. Thank you for more great ideas.

  55. You have great ideas for fall decorating. I can’t wait to get mine started tomorrow.

  56. Thanks so much for those good, inexpensive ideas to decorate the home for Fall.

  57. Just lovely!! I recently discovered your blog and look forward to your information and ideas. I knew I had found a wonderful site when I saw all of your decor with my white stoneware. Farmhouse style may be a newer trend but, I have used my stoneware for 30 years.

  58. Your white dishes are divine, I love how you use them in your decor.

  59. Theresa Kleinschmidt says:

Love all your fall decorating tips. The tips are very inexpensive and practical, I love bringing the outdoors in every fall to decorate my home. Fall is the best time of the year! Thanks for sharing your lovely home Yvonne and have a good weekend.

  60. I love the pumpkins and bittersweet. Yes I put corn on my door before and the squirrels eats it !

  61. Valerie Tingley says:

Pumpkins are just starting to make an appearance here in California and I, for one, am thrilled!

  62. I love using natural and faux natural elements in my house. Just the other day I went outside and gathered up some branches to put in a vase with faux acorns, pumpkins and leaves!

  63. Ana Maria says:

Fall has always been my favorite season for decorating, but envision the challenge, since I live in Miami, Florida!
If you all are complaining about Summer’s lingering high temperatures, try to imagine how it feels for us here with temps in the 90s! Still, every year I pull out my “fauxs”… pumpkins, gourds, autumn leaves and decorative cabbages, and each year I buy some new ones to add to my collection.

Your blog is such an inspiration! Thank you for all your beautiful ideas!

    Ana Maria

  64. Nancy Mattox says:

I like this idea and this one and this one! Where do I begin? I have only so much room! I luv to decorate w natural elements. Thank you for the abundance of loveliness.

  65. Nancy Ashley says:

I love using the faux bittersweet as it doesn’t grow in my area. Love your ideas!

  66. nan, odessa, DE says:

How do u keep them living in an arrangement until we decorate for Cjristmss. Any hints, info will be appreciatrd.
Slso,my mims don’t last long inside.
    What am I doing incorrecyly?

  67. Kay Schulz says:

What a beautiful Fall post. We are in the midst of Spring Blossom in Australia.

  68. Don’t hate me because I still use the bittersweet garland that I have had for over 10 years! I just love how garland can seem almost magical when used in the right space in the right way. 🙂

  69. Enjoyed your colorful post. Fall is a favorite of mine. How do you get the bittersweet berries to stay on the branches instead of dropping off?

  70. Sherry Pelle says:

I still have a ways to go on the fall decorating here. Let’s see now, walnuts, popcorn kernels, paper and burlap leaf cutouts, clothes pins and pumpkins! Oh boy, I’d better get busy! Thanks for the tips Yvonne!!

  71. Like you i like the look of nature in my fall decorating. walnuts and pecans in the shell, acorns, Indian corn and, of course, mums in a variety of colors.

    Happy Fall Y’all!

  72. Fall is my favorite! I love the Indian corn wreath!!!

  73. Yvonne, before I started following your posts, I gave little thought to fall decorations. Oh, I had a couple of things–a pumpkin made of bright orange paper and a little scarecrow on a wooden stand that I dragged out of my closet every fall. Neither were as creative, beautiful, or festive, however, compared to what you’ve inspired me to do. Now I’ve decorated both inside and out, even though some of the neighbors think I’m bit premature (but not in a critical way).Nnonetheless, I’m having fun and loving it! Thanks again for all your inspiration. And by the way, of all the decorations, I love the white pumpkins the most. They are now just beginning to appear in the grocery stores here in Oregon.

  74. Beautiful ideas and hurrah for fall!!

  75. Pat Hatter says:

Love the Indian Corn wreath & it truly looks awesome & dramatic on your door!!!

  76. SO glad Practically Speaking is going to continue. I just love this helpful series. The comments are full of tips and tricks too. Thank you.

  77. I found a sack of walnuts in my freezer!! From my childhood neighbor –I’m sure I was going to do the latest craft!! When I found them I knew I wanted them for something and this is it!!! I’d seen it on one of your pages so I’m going to do this today. ( My husband, who did not grow up with ag saw this brown bag of brown under a bunch of stuff in freezer last night and literally gasped WHAT are these??? With glee I say OH !!!?I’ve been looking for these!!) obviously not too hard?

  78. JaneEllen says:

When we lived in western KY there were so many natural items to glean for decorating inside. Since we lived out in country there were pine trees to get pine cones between our property and next door. I would go for little walk down the road to come home with branches of leaves that had fallen in wind. It was so breath takingly beautiful in Fall out there, plus not so hot or humid. Found dried vines in our bushes to pull out to put around bowls, other arrangements.
One year decided to put birds nests/birds on holiday tree so went out to get some of those vines for garland on tree. Think was one of prettiest trees ever, all natural except for lights.
Our trees on our place here in western CO are getting big enuf for me to get branches of leaves for decorating house and on front porch. Our neighbors trees shed branches I use for all kinds of decorating. Saves me money and time not having to go to town for decorations and am happier about what I have.
Love your blog, you have such beautiful projects. Love to read comments, learn a lot.
    Enjoy your Fall weekend

  79. As simple as it is……..I loved seeing the little square vase of winecorks. How cute. I have hundreds of them sitting in big jars…….gonna go pluck me some corks.
Beautiful, beautiful photos. This is my first real fall in over 20 years. I am like a little kid.

  80. Great ideas! I love decorating with pumpkins, pine cones and Indian corn. I think fall if my favorite season to decorate for!

  81. Yvonne, I love your fall vignettes! I don’t usually decorate for fall until October, but this year, since I’ve been reading a lot of blogs and seeing ideas for fall decor I’m thinking I will start a bit earlier.

I love bittersweet. My grandmother always had a sprig of bittersweet in a small vase that she hung on the wall. As I remember from my childhood it was there all the time, not just in fall. I also love, love, love pinecones! I have always been fascinated with them and have collected quite a number of them. And I am like you regarding fall leaves. I go for a walk and come back with more than I can carry. I love the many, many variations in their colors and sizes. When I was a child my mother and I would gather the leaves and then iron them between two pieces of waxed paper to preserve them. I haven’t done that for a while, as I kind of like them to curl a bit as they dry out.

Something else that I saw today at my neighbor’s was a fall arrangement made with orange lanterns–I can’t think what you call the plant that produces them–darn. Maybe you know what I mean. Or someone else reading your blog does.

I don’t have very many surfaces in my small house to place arrangements, but what I usually do for fall decor is use the top of my buffet in our small eating area. I have a long, wooden dough bowl and I put pumpkins, gourds and leaves in that and then I set small pumpkins on the top ledge of the buffet. This year I’m going to use some white pumpkins and hopefully some bittersweet if I can find some. Then, traditionally I hang some ears of Indian corn on my back door and a fall wreath of some kind on the front door. That’s about the extent of my fall decorating. Except that I buy mums for the front porch and that does it until Halloween!

Thanks for your lovely examples of your fall decor. I loved looking at the eye-candy!

  82. Funny how now you have so many people commenting about your post since you offered a reward! Money talks I guess! Pathetic! This country is so sad!

  83. Shauna Neuenswander says:

I love FALL. What fantastic ideas, I can’t wait to incorporate them into my FALL decorating.

  84. Nancy Nettle says:

Great blog! Love bringing the outside in. The warm colors and feel of your designs are wonderful and they are such simple ideas that make a huge impact. Thank you!

  85. Great tips! Question- Indian corn– what do you do about mildew growing on the husks? I had an issue with this before, so I have not used it since.

My fall decor is sparser this year due to indecision about finding a house, but I couldn’t let it totally go by! I used branches, different textures of faux pumpkins, candlelight, of course, and such as it is.

Catching up on blogs after my crazy week and near death experience mid-week. I need all the distraction I can get right now to keep my mind busy.

  86. This is the first time I have used white pumpkins with chrysanthemums. I love it! thanks for a new perspective!!

  87. Lanita Anderson says:

I loved all of your decorating for fall using things from outdoors. Fall is my favorite season of the year, and I not only love decorating for it, I always love getting new ideas and inspiration. Thanks for sharing…..

  88. I can’t imagine anybody not loving the fall season. Even as a child I loved this time of year with Thanksgiving being my favorite holiday. That’s right you read it right (not Christmas), probably because it wasn’t about gifts but about good food and family coming together! The smells are divine and gives a warm feeling. Thanks for the inspiration to my favorite time of the year!

  89. Fall is my favorite! Love all the natural elements you use.

  90. When I’m changing decor, it always involves a trip outside. There are treasures outdoors that you can’t find in a store. I live in the country so I do have an advantage over city dwellers, but as a kid living in town my mother would have dad take her on a drive through the country. She’d come home with cattails, pampas grass, seed heads of weeds and flowers, pine cones, etc.

  91. Portia Read says:

Thank you. Your thoughts on mouth heart connection is very touching and so timely.

  92. Diana McCormick says:

I so love your post. Your decorating tips are spectacular.

  93. Kathy Menold says:

Yvonne, you got me started on some early transition decorating . As you advised I just started in one area. Lemons replaced by apples and pears and a new cotton wreath on the wall. Now our temps are back to 90 so wonder if I started my fall decor a little early? Love autumn but need to wait I guess.

  94. Yvonne, your posts are addictive. I just can’t learn enough. You inspire me daily. Thank you for all your extra effort. Your home is lovely and mine is becoming more comfortable and friendly. I love your tips and tutorials. I’m infatuated with the velvet pumpkins and about ready to try an arrangement Wish me luck ?

  95. Getting my fall stuff together now. Reworked last year’s twig wreath, and making some beautiful velvet pumpkins! Your posts are so inspirational. Thank you!

  96. Linda Hovgaard says:

The first time I came across your blog I was immediately in love….it was a fall tablescape that was so beautiful and perfectly constructed. I have been hooked ever since. I love how you use natural elements in your design and keep things simple. Thank you for all your expertise and inspiration. I recently went through a huge remodel and cannot wait to use some of your fabulous ideas. Happy Fall and thanks again.

  97. Brenda Attkisson says:

    Love it all !!

  98. I love fall because it lasts so long. The rush for Christmas after Thanksgiving seems so short.

  99. Agreed, natural elements is the way to go especially for Autumn

  100. Gail McMullen says:

Are those rosemary topiary in the section discussing baskets? They are so tall and beautiful? If not could you share what type of plant they are?

    1. They are faux topiaries. I’ll be showing you how to make them soon.

  101. Veronica Nightingale says:

When using pinecones for filler, do you put them in the oven before saving them? I read somewhere that this is necessary to get rid of tiny hidden bugs, etc.

  102. The link to your Fall recipes doesn’t seem to be working! Thanks!
