I think foyers are the hardest room in the house to decorate!!! They have a big responsibility and purpose! They serve so many functions…for not only a family but also guests! Foyers set the mood for our homes. So it’s important to make our foyers warm and welcoming !
I’ve lived in three homes in my adult life and all the foyers were very different. One foyer was just a little tiny hallway, one was really part of my living room and at StoneGable the foyer is more like a room.
No matter the size or shape making a welcoming foyer is important!
Here are a few “must haves” in a foyer to make it both functional and fabulous… and welcoming!
And how do I know this… because my foyer is a work in progress! I’ve been making it over for about 6 month now, and like many things we do at StoneGable it is a s-l-o-w work in progress! Throughout the process I’m making an effort to make it a place in my home that is functional as well as warm.
I’ll be adding the finishing touches to the foyer over the next couple of weeks and I’ll show you the final look soon.
ADD A RUG
No matter the size of your foyer, make sure is has a great indoor/outdoor rug at the door to catch all the dirt and dust coming in from the outside! It will save your floors, for sure!
My rug came from Ballard Designs (on sale).
A PLACE TO HANG COATS, PURSES, ETC
I have 2 coat closets on either side of my front door, but they have been turned into dish closets. So we hung a vertical coat hook (Pottery Barn Outlet) next to our front door. My daughter and son-in-law have a 100 year old townhome on Capital Hill and have a very tiny foyer. It’s really a small hallway. They have this same coat hanger for guest’s coats.
INCORPORATE A FLAT SURFACE
Make sure you have a shelf or a table or a cabinet in your foyer. It’s important to have a flat surface to be able to lay your keys down on it or have a place for a lamp or a wonderfully scented candle even a little vignette if you have room.
In Jacqueline’s foyer, she and her husband put a great shelf held up by chippy corbels over a radiator. In my home I recently bought a cabinet that has an upscale farmhouse look from Joss & Main. I tucked it under the main stairs. I love the extra storage it gives me!
Most foyers have some type of overhead lighting. I changed out our original brass chandy that was 20 years old and opted for a very simple oil rubbed chandy. I’m not sold on this light fixture. I just might paint my original one and reinstall it.
Put your light on a dimmer. This is such a nice extra feature!
The little block letters in front of the lamp is an “S” and a “g”… for StoneGable!
ADD A LITTLE ART OR A MIRROR
Hang something on the walls to make a foyer look more welcoming! I love the play of light a mirror creates so I put a mirror (Ballard Designs) above the foyer cabinet.
Now let’s look at some other things to put in your foyer if you have room….
A LARGER RUG
If you have a hall foyer add a runner if you have space. If your foyer is larger put down a larger rug. It will make the space cozier and will also act as a barrier for dirt in this much used area!
One of the things I am waiting for is a new rug for this area!!! It’s pretty sassy and a little wild!
Include a place for sitting in the foyer if you have room. It’ adds a layer of decor as well as function! When the weather is inclement, so many people take off their shoes at my door. A chair comes in handy for putting them back on.
I have a chair (Ethan Allen) and a little settee in my foyer. The settee is decades old and is still in almost perfect condition except for the fabric. It will be getting a new slipcover and painted legs in a week or so!
CREATE A VIGNETTE
Embellish your foyer if you have enough room. Even if it is just a couple of small accent pieces! I made a very easy vignette for the top of my cabinet. Accent pieces gives any room… even a foyer… lots of personality!
MORE THINGS TO ADD TO A FOYER…
