COZY TOASTY FLANNEL HAND WARMERS DIY

PILE OF FLANNEL HAND WARMERS

When the weather turns chilly it’s nice to have a warm scarf or a cozy hat or even some toasty flannel hand warmers! Today I’m sharing how to make this cold-weather chasing way to keep your hands warm and comfortable!

Here at StoneGable, we don’t let a little cold weather keep us inside.

Actually, we love to bundle up and light a big roaring fire in the fire pit or head out for a brisk walk in the woods.

We love to cheer our local football team to victory even when it’s snowing.

This winter we are all going to stay extra warm by wrapping ourselves in the flannel blankets I made earlier this fall! You can see an easy-peasy diy for them HERE.

And to keep our hands toasty and warm I also made lots of little hand warmers to match the plaid flannel blankets.

I’ll show you how!

We’re keeping a basket of hand warmers “handy” (pun intended) near our back door! And I’m making them as part of a gift basket for family members that have a firepit too!

HERE’S WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • flannel material
  • rice
  • funnel for filling the hand warmers with rice
  • sewing machine
  • scissors
  • thread and needle

LET’S MAKE HAND WARMERS!

Easy to make Flannel Handwarmers! This would make a great gift too!
  1. Materials: flannel and rice. Yes, that’s it!
  2. Cut 4 flannel square for 1 pair of hand warmers. I cut out 4 and 5-inch squares to fit different size hands.  But you can make them any size you like.
  3. Put two squares right side together and sew all the edges together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Leave a small opening to add rice. Make sure this opening is big enough to turn the squares right side out too.

4. Turn the handwarmer squares right side out through the opening. I use a pencil with an eraser top to help push the fabric through the opening and to push out the corners.

5. Fill the handwarmers with rice through the opening. Don’t fill it too, too full. I filled each handwarmer between 1/3 and a little under 1/2 full. Hand stitch the opening to close it.

They are that easy to make.

HOW TO USE THEM

To warm up the hand warmers pop them in the microwave for 30-45 seconds. Careful they will be hot!

I can’t wait to light the fire and roast hot dogs and marshmallows at the fire pit this weekend!

Flannel hand warmers make great gifts! Since we are hosting more outdoor gatherings even in the cooler weather, I’m going to make a bunch and let people take them home!

To take your handwarmers one step further – use denim (recycled blue jeans) or corduroy and make bags for a corn hole game! More fun outside! Fresh air, family fun and no electronics required! 😉

  17. We have had such warm weather this fall in my part of PA! It is now getting cold, especially at night, (and night comes at 5:30 now) so these hand warmers will come in “handy.”

  18. Julie Ann says:

L O V E flannel ! I have this idea that for kids make little ones for their pockets but make them into 2 squares sewn together on three sides with one opening for their hands. Just dont fill it real full so their little hands has a space to put them in. * ) .

  19. These are great-I am going to buy so flannel now!

  20. Never underestimate a little warmth. I also make these in larger (elongated) sizes to use for muscle aches and bed warmers. I like to sleep in a cool room, but in a cozy bed. Before getting in, I will put the”bedwarmer” in at torso level. Then when I get in I will push it down to the bottom and put my feet on it. I also use dried corn (from the feed store). You can get a 50 pound sack for under $10 an it goes a long way when making lots of these for gifts.
I also make washable envelope style flannel covers for mine. I mean (TMI alert) I do put my feet on them. 🙂
