BUFFET IN THE FOYER… FINDING THE RIGHT PIECE

BUFFET IN FOYER-Finding the perfect fit-stonegableblog.comI have always found it hard to decorate my foyer. It’s wide and ample and open. The living room and dining room flank it and flow into it and so does the main stairs. I’ve tried several pieces of furniture in here but they were not quite right! Decorating it in a way that works with the front of my house eludes me! But maybe things are turning around!!! A new buffet has come to live in my contrary foyer. And like Goldilocks, some of the furniture I have put in the foyer have been too small or too big… but I think this is just right!

The buffet came from Wayfair. It’s wonderfully made and I got it at a really great price! I like it because it’s a little taller than what I’ve had against the wall before. I also like that it is wider and fills the wall under the stairs in better.

I kept the Ballard Design mirror and turned it horizontally so it would fit. You know how I love a little black with my neutrals!

BUFFET IN FOYER-buffet in the foyer-stonegableblog.comThe buffet has a barnwood finish and paneled doors which gives it that farmhouse appeal that I love. But it is beautifully finished and the creamy color makes it feel a little more refined. My perfect combination!

The upholstered chair that I had in the foyer was not working with this buffet, so I put it in a guest room that needed a chair. I paired this buffet with a black chair and added a fun no-sew burlap pillow. You can see a step-by-step tutorial for it HERE.

BUFFET IN FOYER-farmhouse buffet paied with black chair-stonegableblog.comI kept the top of the farmhouse buffet pretty simple. A fun lamp, a big olive jar and in the middle a wire tray with a few interesting things in it!

I got the wire tray from Magnolia. If you watch Fixer Upper you might recognize the name. I got this from Joanna and Chip Gaines web site.

I have such an obsession with trays and baskets and their ability to group things!

Aren’t these little spindle and tin candlestick cute? I got them at a local outdoor vintage fair. I’m going to try to reproduce these for a post. I have a few fun ideas for recreating them.

BUFFET IN FOYER-chippy candlesticks with tin tops-stonegableblog.comI’ve learned a whole lot about choosing the right piece for a foyer and how to style it. I think I feel another how-to decor post coming on!!!!!!

What issues do you need to conquer in your foyer? I’ll try to address them in an upcoming post!

Looks like you’ve found the perfect solution Yvonne! I think your new buffet fits in beautifully and love how you have accessorized it.

  2. Great piece Yvonne and I love those candlesticks and that basket. Have fun today since I know what you are doing and who you will be with.

  3. The height and width are just perfect, and you have styled
it fabulously! I adore the statement it makes in your foyer!
    : )

  4. Morning Yvonne,
I would say this whole setting could not be any more perfect…………..
    It all looks fantastic……….

I love my buffet too, it is one of my favorite things to decorate.

Didn’t know the Gaines had a website, gonna have to check that out.
Just saw a video somewhere a few months ago where she was giving her
testimony about her spiritual life, had wondered if they might be Christians
but was so great to know they are. Love their show when I get to see it,
usually it is when I visit my daughter, as they have cable, we don’t!! lol

Blessings for a great day and enjoy your new foyer, it looks smashingly
    beautiful…………..

  5. Your foyer is perfection!! Absolutely love it all! I’m looking to update some of my lamps and love yours. Could you share where you found it? Thanks so much for all your wonderful inspiration! Elaine

    1. I find most of my lamps at HomeGoods and the Pottery Barn Outlet. This came from PBO.

  6. I’d say you’ve found the right piece at last! I know what you mean about foyers. If I were building a new house, I think I’d make a large, fairly square foyer so that I could have a round table in the middle. Of course, then I’d always want a big arrangement of fresh flowers in the middle, so maybe it’s a good thing I don’t have that!

    1. That sound beautiful! I tried a round table, but it just seemed to be in the way!!! But I’m sure you’ll do it right!

  7. Love your display and the burlap covered books are perfect! The candlesticks are so unique! At first I thought those were cans on top, but they look corrugated. I’ll be looking forward to seeing your tutorial. Debra@Myhumblehomeandgarden.com
P.S. Made your Pasta Carbonara the night before last and of course it was delicious! Posted it on my site with a link back to your site for the recipe.

  8. The buffet fits the space wonderfully and I love how you still had room for the chair!

  9. Your new sideboard is perfect for your foyer! Can you tell me what the name of it is? I did a quick search on Wayfair and couldn’t find it. I, too, have trouble with my foyer. In fact, I was going to ask if you could help me with it when you start doing your consulting work. It is very large with too many corner areas that I have a hard time figuring out what to put in the area. It also has very high ceilings. It is perfect for a Christmas tree, but I can’t leave one up year round. Ha! 🙂

  10. Your foyer looks so pretty. I also use black as a an accent color in my home….have for years! I love the mirror on your stair landing also. Beautiful.
    Sheila

  11. Well, Yvonne, you asked for solving a problem spot and mine is in the master bedroom. Across from our bed is a blank wall. We have a cathedral ceiling so the center of the wall goes up to a large point. It seems like I’ve got to center something tall in the middle with shorter things on the side to mimic the wall shape. The problem is that my hubby’s armoire-dresser goes there and that’s where the TV needs to go, too. Can’t put the dresser any other place because the other walls are a window seat wall (I know….I”m very lucky!) or a wall with two door in it that goes off to the bathroom at an angle. Any ideas? I’m stumped. How do you work with a bossy wall???

What kind of wood flooring do you have in your house? How do you feel about it? Does it hold up well? I am about to change the flooring in our house and I am struggling with what changes to make. Is the wood floor an engineered wood? Thanks in advance for all your suggestions.

    Bobbie Allgood

    1. Our floors are oak with a chestnut finish. The foyer floors are 20 years old and have help up perfectly. I know that these floors can be sanded and stained over and over. If truth be told I’d like to go a little darker, but that would be price prohibitive for us.

  13. I think it looks just perfect in every way, you nailed it. That lamp is so unique and sure makes a statement, I love it.

  14. It’s perfect and somehow, this looks more like you and “Stone Gable” if that makes sense. I never realized how wide open your foyer is but I love that. I just may have to go get me one of the wire trays. Love that one! xxoo, Barb

  15. Melissa Leach says:

What a great piece and it fits so perfect in your foyer. The first thing I noticed in the photo was the beautiful black mirror. Love those pops of black. I’m smitten with your galvanized pieces as well. Thanks for sharing.

  16. Perfect fit I say! The basket and those unique candle holders… luv them!
    Happy mid week Yvonne!

  17. I think you’ve found the perfect piece for your foyer. I too always have a spot of black somewhere in every room and would love to have that mirror. I also love your accessories with the exception of the olive jar. You didn’t ask, but my opinion is that the large lamp is wonderful but the olive jar is too large and distracts from the other items. Your decorating skills are second to none and I look forward to your daily blogs.

  18. My “foyer” is like a hallway leading into the other part of the house. I need a narrow (12″) wide, long (6′) table but I’m not having much luck finding one. My living room is painted a very light gray & the colors are navy blue & white with touches of gray. Your idea would help me out.
Thank you & as always, your home is an inspiration!

  19. Love the new look in your foyer!
I have a request about your outdoor potting bench/area. I know you have referred to it before. I would love to see more pictures of it and how it works with the rest of your back patio, back door, etc.
Thanks for sharing you beautiful home and inspirational ideas with us!

  20. Yvonne, just love that lamp! (especially the lamp shade).

  21. Marlene Stephenson says:

Love your new buffet, everything looks great. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day.

  22. Hi Yvonne, I’m a follower of your blog and love it. This is my first comment, I think. I would LOVE some suggestions for my foyer and would love to send a pic when we return from a short get away this Friday. My front door opens to a bent/circular enclosed staircase going up to the right with living room on the left and a small, but high wall just before entering into a step down to the family room. That wall currently has a wood and glass 6 ft. plus etagiere on it filled with beautiful hand painted pieces by my MIL and other collectibles. I’m so tired of it and am longing to do something that could display more seasonal stylings. So far, all I have thought of is a demi lune table with mirror above. Would love to hear what you suggest. I believe the wall is only about 40-44″ wide. Can’t measure now, we’re out of town, but sure could on Friday or Saturday.

    1. Hi Polly,
I’ll try to answer foyer questions. If they are something specific to you home I am doing Decorating and Design Consultation beginning the middle of May. If you are interested email me and I’ll put you on my waiting list.

  23. Gorgeous. Another beautiful addition/change…

Do you mind sharing where you purchased the long mirror hanging at the landing of your stairs?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi KJ, I found this mirror on sale at the Pottery Barn Outlet on sale for $49.00. I painted it with Graphite Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

  24. Well done – looks absolutely perfect.

It took me buying 4 hall tables to get ours right.

The irony is the 4th one was the cheapest. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I do everything backwards, haha.

    Looking great at the Gable!!!!

    1. You make me feel better! The first piece was an old buffet I painted… to small. I gave it to my daughter. The second one was an industrial table. I actually liked it, but had no storage. It’s becoming my new computer desk . But I think this one will stay. I feel like I am in good company after reading your comment! Thanks!

  25. It’s perfect. I just love how you have decorated your home. Every room is stunning.

  26. It looks perfect! I love the way you styled it too. Really like the lamp. I love using buffets in foyers and living rooms.

  27. Yvonne, you’ve done it again! Buffet, black-framed mirror and accessories are perfect.

  28. Erica Thomas says:

Love it you are right it is perfect!!

  29. Well you definitely have it right now. Looks wonderful, love the buffett, love the accessories too. Love the lamp, so unique. I love bits of black and hope to do that more. Great job your house looks amazing! Love your blog and sharing your pics & recipes.

  30. Cindy Rasley says:

Lovely! Fits well! You have elegant country taste! I on the other hand have farmhouse decor! Well! I live on a farm! Ha! Goats! Chickens! Dogs and a beautiful kitty who adopted us! A horse to come in the near future! Take care! Cindy

  31. Love your foyer decor and the side board . Love the candles can’t wait to see if there will be a how too for them..i also enjoy watching Fixer Upper ! Chip & Joanna are so cute and their work is awesome.
    Have Blessed tomorrow
    Pam

  32. Love, love, love the buffet piece Yvonne!….It is perfect for the foyer and you have dressed it so beautifully!….love that wire tray from Magnolia!
It was so much fun antiquing with you!….it was a great and productive day!….See you soon!!!

  33. Becky Johns says:

The placement between the living room and the dining room make it an ideal spot for an appetizer buffet with punch bowl, and guests can serve themselves as they go into the living room, when they first arrive, and come back if they desire more. It is also a perfect place to put a basket of favors/gifts for the guests to pick up as they leave. Being just outside the dining room it could be a nice drink buffet or dessert buffet as well.

Is there where you normally enter the house? You could create a place in the cupboards for your purse, keys, and mail until you sort it. Out of sight, but at the site where you enter.

I like the new piece and its wonderful finish. It greets the guests, or family and is a perfect place for fresh flowers to give them the most viewed spot, or to create a seasonal decor splash . I like that it is large enough to do something quite eye-catching, not just a little, low table. I envision you having all sorts of fun changing this out for the seasons and for parties to set the theme.

  34. It looks absolutely beautiful! I feel in love with the buffet as soon as I saw your post. I’ve tried searching Wayfair (I won’t say for how long ;)) and couldn’t find it. My husband and I just bought our first home and it would make a wonderful addition. What’s the specific name of the buffet?

  35. GwenCondit says:

I’ve loved all you’ve done in the foyer but this is now my favorite look. I noticed the tray. I too ordered one from Magnolia. I like to see yours for when I switch mine around! Looks great

  36. Brenda Smith says:

Love the way your lamp echoes the wire look of your basket!

  37. Hello Yvonne…. love your new buffet… I really liked the chair there that you moved to a spare bedroom but replacing with this buffet is perfect…. I hope you haven’t already answered this question… saw it posted but couldn’t find the answer…. can you tell us the name of the buffet? I’ve searched and searched on Wayfair and I just cannot find it. Thank you so much!

      1. Thank you so much! I just love your blog and how you decorate…. perfection!! I never start my day without you!

  38. Love all your posts! What color are your walls in the foyer? Thanks and have a blessed day!

  39. Hi! I love your blog posts and searched for this same topic and not surprisingly, found something from you! My foyer is basically one large wall and I’m looking at using a buffet/sideboard there. But it’s 4 feet tall! Is that too tall right by a front door? I’m so perplexed!!

    1. Not too tall at all, Lucy. Give your sideboard a try there and live with it for a little while to see how you like it.

  40. I love all of it. Where did you find that lamp? It’s adorable!

    1. Hi LeighAyn, this is a very old post and I found the lamp at Pottery Barn over a decade ago. Sorry I can’t help you with a source.
