I spent the weekend in Washington DC and watched and cheered my daughter Jacqueline (middle), daughter-in-law Abigail (right) and Jacquie’s college friend Janalyn (left), towards their half marathon goal at the DC Rock And Roll Half Marathon. Unlike last year it sprinkled, and rained and poured and blew! The streets that were as packed with cheering crowds last year were only dotted with hardy, umbrella toting, hard-core family members. I was astoundedly impressed with how the runners sans cheering crowds, without the bands every half mile and with a cold rain soaking them to the bone were so steeled to persevere and finish the race! I was amazed how they looked forward to the end of the race, only one-quarter of a mile ahead, all pressing on to finish strong!
This got me to thinking… Do I have the persistence to to run the race of life and finish strong? To persevere so I will get the victor’s crown when I cross the finish line? I sure hope so!
I PRESS ON TO THE GOAL TO WIN THE PRIZE WHICH GOD HAS CALLED ME HEAVENWARD IN CHRIST JESUS. Philippians 3:14
Here’s the thing… this life is sometimes hard… very hard! And that should not surprise anyone reading this. Sorta like a marathon. Filled with potholes and hills and other runners and, like today’s Marathon in DC, rain and wind! You just don’t know what’s coming around the next corner or bend!
I get a little more than frustrated with the “wealth and health” gospel. It short sells our daily struggles and, I think, adds a layer of false expectation for many people. You know, “If we just pray and trust enough then we will be so blessed all our troubles will be naught”! I’m here to tell you…NOT TRUE!!!!
If we are serious to read the bible and study what it says, God really does not promise us that our lives in this world will be an easy sprint! Here’s what He promises… troubles, and trials of all kinds and even tribulation. But if you are His, He promises to be with you right in the middle of your troubles and give you wisdom and give you a peace that passes all understanding. He promises that…
ALL THING WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD TO THOSE WHO LOVE GOD AND ARE CALLED ACCORDING TO HIS PURPOSES. Romans 8:28
Listen to what Jesus has to say about the race of life as He lived on this earth…
I HAVE TOLD YOU THESE THINGS THAT YOU MAY HAVE PEACE. IN THIS WORLD YOU WILL HAVE TROUBLE. BUT TAKE HEART I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD. John 16:33
Jesus has overcome… the Greek word is NIKAO. And the root word is NIKE… yes, like the sneaker! Nike means overcoming, victory, to subdue the enemy, to prevail. Jesus prevailed in the marathon of life and the eternal battle of good and evil. He is the Victor, the supreme winner!
And here’s the best news, if we are in a relationship with Jesus we are overcomers too! We have won! We have prevailed.
We just need to run our life on earth being in relationship with Jesus and obeying Him and never giving up. NEVER give up doing what Jesus tells you to do in life. Live out the bible. Persevere in all things! So, at the end of this life’s race we can get a victor’s crown!
Jacqueline and Abigail and Janalyn and thousands of other runners crossed a finish line today! Wet, tired and a little sore but in great spirits. They had persevered and finished their race!
How about you? Are you serious about your life’s race? Then, partner up with Jesus and run the race to eternal victory!
