6 TIPS FOR CREATING A WINTER VIGNETTE ON YOUR KITCHEN ISLAND
Winter is a time to pare down decor and enjoy the breathing space a less-is-more attitude around the home brings! It’s a great time to organize and to clean and to get rid of things we no longer need or want! I’m starting in my kitchen and cleaning, organizing and decorating it! I’m striping out all the excess and clutter and keeping it quite utilitarian until spring. My large island is getting the same treatment with just one big kitchen vignette! Here are 6 tips to help you make make an amazing winter kitchen island!

Now, let’s create a kitchen island vignette! Here are 6 tips for making it simply perfect!
SCALE
There is not much difference between creating a vignette for a kitchen island or a living room table really! I think the most important thing to remember is scale! If you have a large kitchen island like I do the scale of your vignette needs to be big too! Use a big tray or basket to contain the vignette. The bolder the better! The kitchen is a place to play up rustic pieces that you might not use in your more formal living spaces!
SOMETHING ORGANIC
It’s so nice to have something living as a part of a winter vignette. We all need a little plant to care for when we can’t dig in the dirt outside. And it literally brings life to your vignette and kitchen!
I’m using a sweet ivy topiary I got from my friend Debbie as a Christmas gift! I love the terracotta pot too! It peeks out from a white bowl the plant is in!
LIGHT
In the winter it’s so nice to have the glow of candlelight! Make sure to include some kind of light to your vignette! I’m crazy about lanterns so I added a lantern to my vignette!
The candle is faux and can be set to turn on in the evening. I love this candle because it looks so real! The flame actually flickers!
USE WHAT YOU HAVE IN THE KITCHEN
Because you are creating a kitchen vignette, use lots of dishes and bowls. Stack dishes as risers and find other fun kitchen items to work in your kitchen vignette!
I have these adorable stackable measuring cups that I perched on a stack of black and white accent plates! An ironstone pitcher filled with odds and-end-silver flatware is a great addition too!
LAYER OBJECTS
Layering decorative pieces in a vignette makes it so so much more interesting! Stack dishes, put something fun in bowls, tuck pretty napkins into the corner of the tray, add a coordinating tea towel to the bottom of the tray or basket. Think layers! It takes a vignette from nice to fabulous! Just don’t over do it! A vignette should tell an interesting story not look cluttered! Which bring us to…
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Winter is a time to give your vignette a little breathing room! Don’t crowd the elements in the vignette. Keep the color scheme tight. Use lots of interesting textures and repeat elements!
Black and white make up the bulk of color in the vignette. I brought in a fun rustic ampersand to repeat the galvanized metal elements in my kitchen.
Now how about playing with your dishes and make an amazing winter kitchen vignette to enjoy until the snow melts? What colors and dishes would you use?

So pretty! And perfect timing for me! I was just wondering last night what to do when I take apart my tray that’s on my dining room table with Christmasy items on it. Love the pinecones! It’s always tough to decorate for winter without using Christmas colors and themes, but it’s way too early for spring colors.
Thanks for the ideas!
Beautiful, Yvonne!
Just gorgeous! I have a similar basket-like tray on my island that I keep baking items in…glass canisters with sugar and flour; measuring spoons; salt, pepper and spice tower (from Pottery Barn). I would love a set of measuring cups like you show in your vignette. Would you share with me where you purchased them?
Thank you for sharing your talent with us…I look forward to your posts!
I got them at HomeGoods!
Thanks so much for your reply…Home Goods is one of my “happy places”!
Looks great as usual. Love the galvanized metal ampersand.
Yours is the first of my emails that I read everyday. Everything you do is so beautiful Yvonne. I am trying to redo my house with the same look of a lot of things you use to decorate. Thank you!!!
Thanks for inspiring me so frequently. I like a few days of just a clean look after Christmas, and now I am ready to do a few winter things. I will be using your ideas.
I love having “wintery look” décor, especially after the house feels bare with all the festive Xmas pretties put away. Yours is so perfect!
Love all of the close up details, but I would love to see the whole island with the vignette!
So gorgeous. Thank you for such great ideas. I am also looking forward to you painting your Rice Poster Bed. Is this the year? I can’t wait. I want to paint mine, too and I want to learn from the pro! Happy new year!
Where do you buy your wooden trays? I love the Cudahay one. I have a passion for trays and bowls.
Yvonne,
How pretty! I LOVE those measuring cups (I collect measuring cups)!

Happy day friend!

Love it…what type of candle is that?
Love you vignette it looks awesome.
you are always my go to for inspiration, love your style.
Always love and adore your vignettes!!
You always have such a marvelous way of incorporating many different patterns of “black & white”. Thank you for your never ending supply of great vignettes, Yvonne:)
Your vignettes are over the top beautiful, my house is so open and I seem to have so many places for a vignette, so afraid with tall furniture and counters, I will overdo, any ideas would be so appreciated. Your blog has me won over, all my interests totslly.
You are so right Linda! I’d just do one vignette per room or large area. Open areas are amazing but are often to over decorated! Great question!
Love all your daily inspirations!! ?
Love the vignettes 🙂
I just LOVE your style and all that you show us. They say that “Imitation is the highest form of flattery”. I do my best to imitate your beautiful vignettes through out my home. You’ve helped me find my “style”. Thank you.
I just found a little lantern at Homegoods and it actually came with a candle! I can’t wait to create my vignette!!!!

Love your style so much you have a huge fan now. I decorate for Christmas in every room in my house and I have to admit I am still tearing it down today. I am sad until I found your post now I can bring beauty to my house even after the lights of Christmas are gone. Thank you so much. You will be the first thing in my inbox I check.

Awww!! Thanks for this-I am inspired now to make a little vignette for my kitchen island, too!! I must know-where, oh where, did you get those oh-so-charming measuring cups??
Hi Shelley, They came from HomeGoods.
Love the kitchen vignette! And I really appreciate the tips in putting one together. It is something I enjoy doing but you are teaching me how to make it better!! Thank you!
I have been a devotee of home decor magazines for years and have several subscriptions, but I must say that until I started reading this wonderful blog a few months ago, I had no idea what I was missing! I have been so inspired by all of your rooms, vignettes and ideas and have duplicated many of the looks for my home. And to make it all sweeter for me are your weekly spiritual blogs that strengthen my faith and encourage me. Thank you Yvonne and God bless you.
THANKS Marie-Angela! God bless you too!
Beautiful vignette and love the great tips to create one
Vyonne,
You do the most beautiful vignettes! I have only been doing them for a few years except for doing this winter kitchen table one right now with dishes. I love using my black lantern and my new white farmhouse pitcher where I have placed some faux frosted evergreen branches since we are still getting quite alot of winter in WA. I’m using a large farmhouse wooden tray and have put a small white pitcher with spoons like you love to do.And a set of white salt and pepper shakers. Also I managed to fit in a couple of stacked mugs. My pitcher is sitting on 3 white plates so it is slightly higher than my black lantern. They are about the same width. I chose to use some black and red buffalo checked napkins tucked in each corner of the front of the tray. I am excited to try using dishes. Thank you for the inspiration to give it a try!! Oh and I also have a cute set of ceramic measuring cups like yours that are multi-colored. Red being the largest one. Would this add a little more interest than my Martha Stewart set of white embossed dessert cups since I am using several other white dishes…like mugs, salt and pepper set, plates. and such? I would really appreciate your help. Connie
