Are you decorating for summer yet? I’m working on it! I love to change up my decor to reflect the season. But, what I don’t like is redecorating a whole room to make those changes! Seasonal changes should be easy to execute and look absolutely amazing with the decor in our rooms. I’ve been doing a little shopping and upcycling and decorating my family room for summer. I like my rooms to take on a more relaxed and casual feel when summer rolls around. As I decorated my family room for summer I found 6 elements that really helped my room take on that summery look. Here are 6 tips that are easy ways to create a spectacular summer inspired room without breaking the bank or stressing out!
CHOOSE EASY-BREEZY COLORS AND FABICS
Put away heavy brocades, velvet and pillows with heavy fringes. I love the woven edging on the white pillow below. It just the perfect embellishments for a summer look!
If you like to use throws during the summer, lighten them up too! Put away big nubby throws and look for thin, soft light colored ones.
PUT IT IN A BASKET
I love containing vignettes. I use wire baskets, crates, metal trays and more! But in the summer, I like to use baskets. Basket gives a room texture without feeling heavy. This basket is a new purchase. I could not resist it! I found it at Pier 1 on sale. Did you notice the roping at the top of the basket? Reminds me of something nautical! I knew that it would be a great addition to my summer family room.
Just remember to choose a basket that does not look too dark or one that is visually heavy. Look for a basket that has an airy feel.
Also, use baskets to organize and stow away things like books, extra pillows, and magazines. I’m looking for a big basket to use as a coffee table for the summer too! Won’t that add a big punch of summer to the family room? Great for summer and a smart way to hide all my pillows!
PUT SHEER CURTAINS ON YOUR WINDOWS
This is the best thing I’ve done in my family room in awhile. Adding updated sheer curtains to my windows make them look almost luminous! They bring so much light and lightness to my room. I made these burlap topped sheer curtains in one afternoon. If you can sew a straight line, you can make these!
What a pretty and easy way to bring summer into a room! The picture above was taken just before the sun went down. I love how the curtains almost look lit up!
Consider hanging classic sheers in a room you want to lighten up!

SWAP OUT CANDLESTICKS FOR A WHITE LANTERN
Summer is the time to use pretty lanterns! I put away all my big candlesticks and preferred to make a more summery statement with a soft white lantern. I use a battery operated candle on a timer so I don’t have to worry about lighting it or putting it out!
White lanterns are a refreshing change and will go with almost any decor! If you don’t have a lantern, this is a great investment!
I love using lanterns outside too! This summer I’m hanging lanterns from my porch!
ADD A BEACHY ELEMENT OR TWO
Okay, I don’t live very close to a beach. But I still like to use a beachy element or two when I decorate for summer. Not a lot… just a tad! When I found this string driftwood at Pier 1 (again, on sale) I knew that it would be a wonderful addition to my summer decor. It has such a great textural appearance and the colors work so well in my family room!
I put the whole bunch of driftwood in a white, vintage chamber pot. I love this new addition so much!
If driftwood is not your thing then how about shells or starfish or a bowl of wonderful Japanese floats? A note of caution… don’t over do this unless you live near the beach. A little bit of summer-at-the-beach goes a long, long way for us land lovers!
ADD SOMETHING ORGANIC TO YOUR ROOM
No matter what time of year it is I am a big cheerleader for using something organic (or faux organic) in a room. I’ve used these vintage topiary pots in the family room since the new year. They work will all my decor. So, until I have garden flowers to replace them… they will stay!
Organics bring life to a room! Every room needs one organic thing in it, especially during the summer!
We don’t need to change very much to make a room look spectacular and summery! So get started! Summer is here and our decor should reflect the best of the season!!!
