There are some areas of our homes that we often don’t give a lot of decorating thought to! Like the shelves under accent tables. But with just a little attention and practice and 5 easy and doable tips these shelves can be decorated like a pro adding beauty, interest and style to our homes! Don’t overlook these little almost out-of-sight shelves! They can support the decor of the rest of the room! So, here are 5 very easy peasy tips for beautiful shelves and accent tables!
1. DON’T CROWD AND CLUTTER
Under-the-table shelves are not the place to stash things you don’t have a home for! They are also not the place for a month’s worth of newspapers or your 5 years of National Geographics! Think of under-the-table shelves as the extension of the accent table… which they are! They should be well appointed and neat! Less is best on these shelves! Just a few well thought out items that accent your total room’s style is decorating perfection. Go easy on decorating shelves… a little goes a long, long way!
I keep the two shelves under my black accent table in the living room minimally decorated. Just two stacks of burlap covered books and a white pedestal cake plate with willow and burlap balls on it. To see a tutorial on HOW TO COVER BOOKS WITH BURLAP click HERE. You can see a BURLAP BALL DIY HERE.
2. CORRAL ITEMS
Under-the-table selves are a great place to gather things you use in a room. And when I say corral that usually means in a nice basket of some sort! Just make sure the basket looks neat and so does it’s content. Opt for a taller basket that takes up most of the height of the shelf. Also the basket should compliment the rest of the room design.
The nubby yet neat texture of this basket works with my neutral, tailored living room.
3. CONTINUE THE ROOM’S COLOR SCHEME AND STYLE
Make sure the content on your accent table’s shelves work with the room as a whole. Keep them understated and stylish!
My living room is very neutral with black accents, so I used neutral and black in choosing pieces to go on the shelves.
4, NO CHOTCHKIES
Under-the-table shelves are not the place to display your BIRD’S OF THE WORLD figurines! Let’s be honest, it’s hard enough to dust very nook and crannie of those shelves, let’s not put anything on them that are dust magnets. And not to mention, that chotchkies are better off in a display cabinet… or in a box in the basement! Choose items that have physical size and visual weight… and go easy on the amount of things on the shelves. Remember Tip #1!
A white footed cake plate sits on the bottom shelf of my accent table. It has several willow and burlap balls on top of it, but together they make ONE pretty, cohesive piece.
5. EVERY SHELF DOES NOT NEED TO BE FILLED
If you have a lot of shelves under your accent tables, like me, they don’t all have to be filled! Remember, our eyes need a little visual rest! Too many filled under-the-table shelves can collectively look busy! Spend time decorating shelves under your accent tables. See which ones are the best to decorate and which one’s can be left empty.
I have two accent table flanking my sofa that have shelves and so does my coffee table. Since both of my accent tables are black I decorate them and leave my natural sandblasted coffee table’s shelf empty!
Okay, now that you know these 5 easy and doable tips… let’s get decorating! Remember to play with your pieces until things look just right! With just a little practice your accent table shelves will look professionally decorated! I know you can do it! I’d love to see a picture of your decorated accent table shelves!!!
