2018 DECOR TRENDS-WHAT’S IN, OUT AND HERE TO STAY

2018 DECORATING TRENDS- WHAT'S IN, OUT AND HERE TO STAY!

I am certainly not a trendsetter but I sure love to see what the “experts” say is on the horizon for those of us who love decorating and home decor. I love trends because I love change and beauty and am always looking for what inspires me. But I must admit I love trends because they can be a bit of a trainwreck. Sometimes absurd and silly! Today let’s look at what to expect to see in 2018 if you love to decorate…

But first…

Today on the podcast we are talking about what things we are doing around our homes and what changes are on the 2018 horizon!

2018… Let’s get to it…

WHAT’S OUT

Let’s talk about what’s OUT! Now don’t shoot the messenger. I’m just repeating what I’m hearing and seeing on the decor scene. But like most predictions, they are often wrong!

WHITE KITCHENS ARE OUT

All white kitchens are giving way to cabinetry that is heavier, ombre and more colorful. Look for less all white backsplashes and countertops.

My take: I think white kitchens are classic and although they may not be white hot they are here to stay. Instead of a kitchen “white out” try adding color or texture or interest with wall color or wallpaper or backsplashes. I am happily keeping my white kitchen cupboards. However this year I am going to install a new backsplash… and it’s white! YIKES!

Okay, my dear Decorating Tricks And Tricks podcast co-hosts. I told you marble would be taking and s-l-o-w train out of being the most popular stone in the kitchen! But you would not believe me! Choo-choo!

BAR CARTS… AGAIN!!!!

They are in and then they are out and then in and then out and so on and on. I think our decor experts don’t quite know how they feel about the blast-from-the-rat-pack past!

Just last year they were in an hot-hot-hot!

My take: The problem is not the bar cart it’s that we don’t use them correctly. Bar carts are just that. For bars. They should not be decorated and made into anything else. I say, let’s hear if for the bar cart if you have a place to put it!

Think about wheeling your bar cart outdoors for your next picnic! So fun!

EXPOSED LIGHTING

No longer is the bare or almost uncovered lightbulb a coveted piece of decor. Fringe is back in lighting and really nothing beats a great drum shade or chandy!

My take: Thank goodness! I usually can’t stand overhead lighting and especially ones that look and feel like an interrogation light! Let’s put up overhead lighting that uplifts our decor!

OPEN SHELVING

Yes, open shelves en mass have had their day. And they have had a good run at being the hot-new-belle of the decorating scene. But alas they were too overdone! Overexposure is the great peril of being too popular!

(same area sans shelves)

My take: I love open shelves but I’m honestly got a little tired of them.  I even took our open shelved down at StoneGable. I think when something is so overdone and copied the way open shelves have been they start to look a little gimmicky. A really nice open shelf or two that is well put together still looks amazing. And a galley kitchen with open shelves is such a classic!

They were certainly a friend for a season but now gone!

SUCCULENTS

Like the rest of the items on this short list, I think succulents have had their day in the sun. When anything gets too overdone you know it will burn out. Succulents are being replaced by bigger yet still easy to care for plants. I can see that “jungle book look” coming down the pike.

My take: Succulents may not be the darling of the plant world but I think bloggers love them so much that they will still be around. This blogger will certainly do her part!

BYE-BYE COPPER AND ROSE GOLD

Copper and rose gold have been big for about 5 years and since last year we have been seeing brass make a bawdy comeback. But gorgeous unlacquered brass! We will be seeing it age to patina perfection on hardware and bath and kitchen fixtures. So copper and rose gold have been moved out by another metal!

My take: Oh bring that gorgeous unlacquered brass on! I’m not talking about the brass of the 80’s and 90’s. So if you have that shiny brass chandelier in the basement waiting for it to come back I say paint it and use it outside above your picnic table. That’s what I’m doing!

I never really bought into the copper or rose gold fad!

OTHER DECOR TRENDS THAT ARE GOING OUT…

  • shiplap (can we all say finally!!!!!)
  • one overdone style in your home
  • granite countertops (going out for 2 years now)
  • bamboo flooring
  • reclaimed wood
  • grunge decor

WHAT’S IN

Now let’s talk about what’s going to be hot for 2018 and maybe a little beyond!

MILLENIAL PINK

image

I can’t remember when one color has had so much fuss made over it. Is it because it is a gorgeous, soft, ballerina pink? Is it because it actually blushes? If you add one color to your decor (and wardrobe) this year make it millennial pink!

The pink trend started about 5 years ago and pink has morphed several times. The reason we all love this pink is that runs the gamut from a glorious beige with pink undertones to a soft muddied but lipgloss sheer salmon.

My take: Oh let’s have a pink moment. I may not paint a wall pink but I may add a couple of soft beigy pink pillows and a throw to my bed. I might also look for a scarf that celebrates my pink girlie-girl side! And I think a suede or velvet millennial pink slipper chair is the quintessential feminine accessory in home decor although the only place I can think of putting it is in my closet!

HIGH CONTRASTS PALETTES

We have moved away from everything being the same color. Do you remember that? Gastly all white… everything! High contrasts are not only very popular they are sophisticated and dramatic! One very hot and classic combination is white and black. Just look how well it works for you in your wardrobe?

Other high contrasts are bits and touches of saturated color accompanied by lots and lots of white. Think red door, white walls, white floors, soft neutral furniture and one red chair.

My take: I cringed to see the everything-is-one-color (especially white) then and I cringe to think of it now! I love contrast and I especially love black and white. Just look at my kitchen and the accents in my home! I’m not a drama queen at all but I do love a little drama in decor!

UPDATED FLORAL FABRICS

You can see more about this pillow from One King’s Lane HERE.

Florals are back after a long, long respite! But these are not your mamma’s florals. They are dramatic and stylized and not shy. They are abstract and bold and are often outlined in black. Look for them starting to pop up in the spring and summer.

My take: I welcome the new florals back. I don’t know if they are my style or if you will see them in my home, but they sure look pretty. And I think there have been aspects of pretty missing from decor lately!

I’m seeing florals used judiciously. On an accent pillow, or one chair. Or a pair of tailored drapes. Gone are the big cabbage rose sofas. Thank goodness!

BRASS

image from my friend’s Kelly’s bathroom

Like I said above, brass is where it is at!!!!! Unlacquered and unpolished and spotted and green with patina.

My take: I love that we are letting something natural age and do it so gracefully! You will be seeing it here at StoneGable mixed with lots of other metals.

MUTED METALLICS AND MATTE METALS

Just like our new queen of the metals, unlacquered brass, metals are enjoying a huge resurgence. But maybe not so shiny and polished. Muted metals will reign supreme in 2018.

My take: bring them on!!!!!! I never bought into shiny stainless steel!

WARM NEUTRALS

It’s looking gray and a little cloudy for the cool neutrals. Grays seem to have had a fabulous run and will not be completely out of the picture, but soft warm-tone neutrals will be donning our homes in 2018 and beyond.

My take: It’s no secret that I am not a gray lover. And I’ll be happy to see this trend go by the wayside. Grays are too cold to be used in such large doses and so many grays are just so unattractive. I know! Probably just me! But I love to live with warm neutrals with lots of gold and soft taupe in their tones! Bring on those warm neutrals. Get hygge with me!

SHAPELY FURNITURE

I see this being new hot trend being talked about and shown in some more highbrow publications and design books. But I also still see lots of structured almost boxy pieces too! So I’m here to say that you may see this popping up in 2018 but this shapely trend is more likely to gather steam and then be big in 2019.

My take: Totally a matter of what you like. Some curvy furnishings I love and some curvy pieces I think are ridiculous. My taste lends to the contained and comfortable!

VELVET

See more about this gorgeous velvet sofa HERE.

It is a classic and really has never been very far from hot! But it’s making a comeback. I’m seeing velvet sofas, chairs, comforters, pillows, hassocks, and almost any great piece of furniture. It’s rich and most often seen in deep luxurious hues like emerald greens and cobalt blues and rich coppers.

My take: Let me be the first to welcome velvet back. It is luxury! Don’t be surprised if I ditch my neutral sofa in the living room for a copper velvet one with fringe! Sigh!

ORNATE PATTERNS

Geometrics have long been the star of the pattern world when it comes to trendy decor. But way off in the calendar year I am seeing more complex and ornate patterns making a play for first place in our decorating hearts! This trend certainly plays off the new florals that are hot as well.

Look for floors, backsplashes, and furniture with intricate details!

My take: Using patterns and the new florals judiciously is the way to go. And for heaven sakes don’t get too matchy-matchy. That is the death of great decor! These complex patterns and florals can bring a little juxtaposition and tension to a room that might otherwise look a little bland! Who says a little bit of disharmony is that bad?

Splurge on one stunning showstopper of a piece donned with a gorgeous and intricate pattern!

MODERN FARMHOUSE

I said MODERN farmhouse. I think we have seen the backside of the rustic farmhouse movement. That is unless you live in an actual farmhouse. Modern farmhouse uses great contemporary and classic furnishings and warms those styles up with a few signature farmhouse detail. Think of urban farmhouse, modern home meets Fixer Upper!

Want to know what modern farmhouse looks like? Just look at StoneGable!

My take: Well, I love it since I think I invented it! LOL!

OTHER TRENDS THAT ARE HOT IN 2018

  • patterned wood floors
  • dark countertops
  • statement ceilings
  • bright colors
  • classically designed interiors
  • terrazzo
  • plants with patterns
  • concrete accents
  • wallpaper
  • Wabi Sabi ( Japanese for imperfect… finding beauty in imperfection)

WHAT’S HERE TO STAY

Well, let’s save that for another day!!!!

I hope you have liked the fun of looking down the road to 2018 trendy decor! And what will be even more fun is to see how these predictions will play out!

What is one decor trend you would like to see GO in 2018? And what one decor trend should we be embracing? Please share!

  1. Could we “please” add —burlap to that has to go and never return list? There are so many absolutely lovely homes out there that have had this less than beautiful fabric added from pillows to curtains, etc. which brings down the ‘quality’ look of just about any decor. I know, I know, so hate me! I don’t even remember my own grandmother’s original farmhouse having this as an element. Adding some of this ‘farmhouse’ burlap to a home with other quality features has been a real turn off. Sometimes, less is more! Love your home and blog!

    1. We could never hate you Deba! Your opinion counts. I think you are right although I really love burlap. It’s a great material and is so textural!~

  2. What a gift that you are able to cull so much info for us. I will always love white kitchens and ship lap but will not miss the cool grays. I’m with you on warm neutrals as a decorating base with pops of color. Love your style! Would love to see examples in a future blog of the lighting trends Yvonne. Xoxo

  3. Pam Mowbray says:

Loved your post today, Yvonne! So interesting to here what’s hot/not and on the horizon! Trends are fair weather friends that add a spark to our interiors. I thing they should be sprinkled in like we change up a classic outfit with accessories. If you have a good foundation, like your beautiful home, changing a piece or two and tweaking the tchotchkes can be just the “umph” you need to kick-start your space and give it new verve! Additionally, it seems that different parts of the country embrace different “trends”, don’t you think? Again, wonderful post!

  4. Peggy spencer says:

Good morning.I always look to your blog for inspiration, and I can say, you as we’ll.i love your Sunday blogs, that you are not ashamed to share your faith.Thank you we need more like you.Love the striped rug you show in your kitchen nook.I have missed some columns, will have to see if you have shared about it.If not, could you say where you purchased? thank you.

  5. Bonnie Gutierrez says:

I am with you about white in the kitchen, especially the cabinets. White has always been classic and bottom line, classic and traditional might fade in popularity but really never “go out”. Of course a touch of color (or more) and some contrast in texture never hurt. One trend that I wouldn’t miss is the obsession with galvanized items. I do appreciate authentic galvanized vintage items and even a reproduction here and there, but am bothered by including items in one’s decor based on popular and trendy. I do love velvet and have considered it as a choice for a sofa for the past two years and I am indifferent to whether or not it is” in”! I feel that one should choose what they love for decor and have fun with it as you obviously do. Yvonne, thank you for the effort, joy, and love in all of your posts!

  6. Calypso in the Country says:

I always love these type of posts. I don’t decorate with too many trends but it’s always fun to see what is popular and what’s not! I am completely happy with my white kitchen with absolutely no plans to change it! Have a great week!

  7. Modern farmhouse is where it is at. I tend to like things that will stay for a while because I am not able to change as often as I would like. I am a fan of the grays though and find that they can be warm when accessories compliment them. Pops of colors are also good especially in pillows and vignettes. Your blog always makes me think when I am buying and redecorating.

  8. Norma Rolader says:

Wow!!!! Thank you for sharing with us trends for 2018

  9. Interesting. I’m not surprised at some of the trends disappearing…they were overdone and who wants to look like everyone else? I don’t think I can embrace the pink trend…not a lover of pink. Give me bold and saturated colors! Unless it’s taupe; I love a good taupe! I will admit to be sick of the all white, neutral decor out there. Excited to see that change!

  10. Hi Yvonne! Thanks for sharing whats in or out in 2018! I do agree on some of them for example, the shiplap. I love it on Fixer Upper, but I don’t think it works for every decor. However, I disagree that copper or rose gold are out. If you use those metals judiciously I think they are still beautiful. I’m not a fan of the unlacquered brass. That just looks to old and worn for me. White kitchens, I agree will always be classic in my opinion. However, my dream kitchen would actually be gray cabinets. I just love them. I also think gray as a paint color will stay. I think most people who love their homes, will do what they love whether it’s a trend or not. If you try to do trends in your home all the time, I think that would be a bit tedious. Well, thank you for this post. xoxo

  11. Fun post Yvonne ! Delightfully informative ! I adore my white kitchen – I use cobalt blue decor such as vintage & new plates in my plate rack which adds charm…I am a fan of blue-grey paints – I find they add serenity to my decor ..I have warmed it with your spindle chair in a soft neutral buffalo check. I have family antique silver which I often don’t polish as I love a bit of tarnished patina. I am still a fan of high quality preserved boxwood wreaths and domes ( glad your 2018 decor trend ‘axe’ didn’t fall on those !- lol) I use it to accent my beloved ironstone collection, acquired over time foraging thrift stores ! My mother in law started me with three pieces many years ago. Thank you for all you do for us ! You’re the best !!!!!!
    Smiles…………Anne

  12. Bye bye gray! I am so happy to see you go.

  13. I think barn doors are going the way of shiplap. I’ve loved the look of BDs but haven’t been able to pull the trigger. I’m pretty sure that I’ve waited too long- if I get them now it will be a mistake.
As for new trends, I’m seeing built in upholstered kitchen benches. The freestanding table bench has been popular for a few years, and has helped break up uniformity around the table. But an uplostered built in adds polish and an architectural detail to a kitchen.
Thanks for sharing and guiding us Yvonne; I really enjoy Stonegable!

    1. If you have the walls open, try pocket doors. Not as flashy as barn doors, but very classic and no swinging doors!! Almost every bathroom and closet in our house has pocket doors and the great thing about it is that it makes furniture placement so much easier!

  14. I have a pretty pink that has been in my granddaughters’ guest bedroom for so long, that it still has to go. Have loved and adopted so many of your wonderful ideas, that will remain, regardless of any new trends. I always add seasonal colors in accessories, and who knew, Wabi Sabi has probably been my imperfect decor all along. And although that sofa is beautiful, my velvet may have to come in something more affordable, like pillows. As always, many thanks for all the fun and inspiration, as well as the sweet visits on the podcast.

  15. Thank you for your thoughts on what’s in/out for 2018. The term modern farmhouse was used back in the late ’70’s early ’80’s so not sure if you truly invented in! That was the style my girlfriends and I decorated as we hated the avocado greens and golds from the mid-late 70’s. We were antiquing and flea marketing way way before HGTV and any of those shows ever were even thought of. So the term and décor style has been around for quite some time. I had white cabinets that I have painted in my first house in 1980, then 1987 and most recently 2017. Never out of style. Our new house we are building also has white cabinets but I did slide away from the white subway backsplash and went for multi navy blue listello. I’m loving the new look on my modern farmhouse! Thanks for a super blog.

  16. Cecilia Williams says:

Loved this piece! Thank you! I’m glad 1color palettes and Grey’s are going. I’m so excited that velvet is back!

  17. These lists so remind me of the movie “Mean Girls”…lol.

  18. Ugh. If granite is out what is in? We are moving to a new property soon. I wanted to replace the existing shiny green Formica countertops with granite. Maybe not! What should I consider?

    1. Connie Fowler says:

We installed quartz in two different colors. We love it and there are so many options.

    2. I think what the industry is saying is that the multicolored granite from 15 years ago now looks dated.

  19. Thank you so much for the 2018 update! I am really looking forward to seeing what you are going to do where you took down Stone Gable’s open shelving.

  20. Connie Fowler says:

Oh, my goodness! This just reaffirms that we should decorate our houses to our own taste. I always thought–open shelving? Dusty! Shiplap? Pretty, but trendy! ! I agree that white kitchens are classic, but I’m so glad I didn’t paint my beautiful hickory cabinets. Bottom line, we should decorate in a way that makes sense to us.

  21. I’ll have to think about what trendy accents I want to incorporate…not velvet (I have 4 cats). Thanks for the list

  22. I’m just wondering what is the new trend for countertops if granite & marble are out. Quartz looks so much like granite but is it the go to countertop?

  23. i agree with the idea of white kitchens , they are classic…even with a little color added

  24. This was such an interesting post, Yvonne! I am quite a traditionalist with a love of French country and English country, so I am thrilled that color, floral fabrics and wallpaper are in. Were they ever out??? Look at Charles Faudree’s timeless looks, for example.

I love pink tones in clothing and small doses of it in flowers, china or pillows. I think this trend will breeze in and back out in decorating. I guess we will all have to wait and see…

Thanks for all of the great info!

  25. Karen Cadden says:

Hi Yvonne, I was going to have my 60’s dark paneling in our entryway replaced with shiplap, but am not sure now. Any suggestions???

    1. Try painting your paneling first! I think a little shiplap here and there is still a fresh and wonderful idea!

  26. Charlotte White says:

I’m with you on the gray trend! It looks great on TV and magazines but in most houses, the lighting is atrocious and the colors ends up looking like a battleship! I’m currently looking to redo my bedroom wall color from a misty blue. What does my husband want??? Gray. Why oh why!!

    1. Yea- not a gray girl either. Yet I have friends with gorgeous gray homes. Just not for me!

  27. Trends are so interesting….who dreams this stuff up? Thank you for sharing what you have heard in the decor world. Some sound ok but some others not so much! But I will keep my eyes open and my mind to pay attention if a trend could work in my home. It could get costly making a lot of changes…and it could take away from the personality of your home.

    1. I know!!!! Sometimes I think manufacturers sit around thinking… what do we have in the warehouse that we need to push. LOL! But I think bloggers have made a big dent into trends! And I love that! We tend to be a little more real life and practical!

  28. Quite surprised to read your post. This is going to be the year of my kitchen remodel and I’m going white with quartz countertops, easy upkeep.I’m still a neutral girl and I think you should decorate with the things and colors that make you happy, not so much a trend follower.

  29. My thoughts are, Do what you love. Trends go in and out every couple of years. But if you do what you really love, you’ll be much happier with your home. I used to worry what others thought of my home, but now I do what I love and what makes me happy.
I guess that comes with getting old. Lol

    1. I am with you Debra! Our homes should be a reflection of who we ate, not some stranger. When I walk into our home it makes we smile and wraps me up with peace!

      1. honest I do not EAT people….always read before you post Carol!

    2. I am with you Debra! Our homes should be a reflection of who we are, not some stranger. When I walk into our home it makes we smile and wraps me up with peace!

  30. Jenny Young says:

I’ve always wondered who decides what’s in or out? Top designers?

I painted my old oak kitchen cabinets about three years ago, the top white & the bottom gray. After living in a dark, dungeon kitchen for 25 years I can’t imagine ever being tire of my bright open clean kitchen.

I’ve never had a lot of open shelving…I have enough to do without all that extra dusting! Give me doors & clean lines any day over dusty or cluttered open shelving.

Pink? Are we all going back to preschool? I hope that doesn’t stay around long.

It’s so fun to read about the trends but in real life I’ve learned the best way to decorate for my family is clean & uncluttered. The cleaner my home, the more posh it looks no matter how high end things are. I have two goals in my decorating. 1 – Clean & organized. 2. Grandma’s house. You remember going into grandma’s house & feeling wanted, loved & much more important than any objects in her home? That’s my main goal. I never want my family or friends to feel on edge because my house is so perfect or frustrated with clutter or dirt. I want them to feel welcomed, loved & unjudged no matter the appearance of my house.

    1. Love your thoughts, Jenny.

  31. I have never been a big fan of gray or pink. A designer friend once told me every room needs a little touch of red. Black is another timeless color that is great for a little splash of color. Go with what you love, if you do not love it you will not be comfortable in the space.

  32. This is one of the greastest post ever, loved it. I feel good about the floral accents I just added to our newly decorated lilac 2nd bedroom

  33. Some of these are good some bad. I hate pink any color pink. I love gray and shiplap! Not a fan of velvet furniture. Love the time worn metals. I love your blog. Thank you for the what’s in and what’s out. I’m with you on burlap. It’s fun just don’t over do it. Great post but I’m not going to run out and get a velvet couch. LOL!

  34. Lets see how these predictions play out. I’m not a fan of velvet and can’t stand geometrics ever! Open shelving looks too cluttered to me but I do enjoy the shelves on hutches etc. I love white kitchens! They look so clean and cheery.

  35. I like the old saying. “Be not the first to try the new, nor the last to cast the old aside”. I have some old, very old pieces that I hope to never cast aside. If the metals and pink are in….buy the metal vase and put the pink flowers in it. But isn’t it nice to watch the world go around…..lol

  36. Cynthia Miller says:

I am with you grey is depressing, thanks for your 2018 takes on what is a trend. I mostly like to keep my home classic with a few new things added to it.

  37. Yvonne , see you too have been perusing the decorating trends for 2018.It is fascinating to see what the” experts” say.. but I think we still all like our homes to reflect who we are and what we love. Staging a house with the newest in decor often fails to result in a lovely warm home if it is not who we are. I love pink in small doses but did think it would be wonderful with all the gray!!
I will continue to enjoy the articles and certainly will try some new mixed in with my classic decorating but remember to always remain true to our own sense of style.

  38. Yvonne, I, too, am always curious about what’s in and what’s out vs the new “trends”. I have always had personal rules that help me see what I hope is a balance. What I LOVE can always work somehow, someway, I never want my Home to feel cold and unwelcoming and never overdo any one thing. My husband has a great adversion to placing anything in our home that looks like it was dragged off a junk pile so my “rustic” touches could never be more than a little something for fun. I admire magazine perfect design but it’s not realistic in a home that is there to welcome and accommodate real people and if there is one thing getting older has taught me is life is too short to fuss too much but life is also too hard to ignore opportunities to bring a bit of beauty and civility into our lives. Thank you for Doug just that!

  39. From a marketing standpoint, trends are designed to make us feel inadequate and thereby spend money to buy new things…things which will *themselves* become uncool again soon. That’s how the whole thing keeps rolling. Yvonne, I love your blog and podcast–never miss an episode and so enjoy all three of you and your useful and fun advice. Trending’s just not my thing.

  40. I LOVE my white kitchen and I, like you, think it is classic and never goes “out”. My backsplash is fawn brown’s to white tumbled marble and my quartz countertops (which I love b/c they have the look of granite w/out the sealing problems) are dark brown/light brown. I have mustard yellow (muted) on the walls and I am going back to white. I have two antique hutches in my kitchen that I am going to paint w/black chalk paint. I just love the fresh look of white. We have a lot of windows and I like light and airy. We live in the country and have 16 grands so it makes it easy to see spills and keep the little handprints wiped off the walls. 🙂 We have dark hardwood through out and I love it. As for the “millenial pink”,,,,,wasn’t that done in the ’50’s? Maybe what goes around comes around. Don’t get me wrong, I love pink in clothing, but not on walls Reminds me of Pepto Bismal. LOL Can’t beat the tried and true classic looks that have stood the test of time. I am purging this spring…..(if we ever warm up!) and going w/a more minimalistic decor. Thanks so much for the posts! You have such great ideas. I too, am just so leary of “trends”. I was a young wife/Mommy in the late 60’s and early 70’s. I had the Harvest God appliances and after a couple of years hated them. When they finally bit the dust, I went w/Stainless Steel and love it! Clean and bright. 🙂

  41. Jill Miglin says:

So hard to constantly try to keep up with what’s in or out. Glad I just go with what I love. Thanks Yvonne.

  42. Jill Nelson says:

My daughter and son-in-law recently bought a new home with medium-toned maple cabinets. I thought they fit the French Country look they were going for perfectly and advocated for not painting them. And I LOVE a white kitchen! They painted them anyway and did navy walls at my suggestion. I have to say I love it.

  43. Joni Hotchkiss says:

Interesting! Look forward to new things for spring and summer.

  44. Katherine says:

Always interesting to see what’s new but glad I know what works for me and I’m comfortable, literally and figuratively, staying pretty much there

  45. Well, we have just spent the past 5 years seeing “Farmhouse”decor update the “Country”60’s so my bet would be the next decor trend season will be updating the 70’s in some form or fashion. Decor trends really seem to be decor nostalgia for the reigning spending market which is becoming more and more Millenial. What do the Millenials find nostaligic? What style brings back comforting memories of their growing up years? I’m guessing Whatever hits that nerve will be the upcoming style trends, and we, being the decor lovers that we are, will jump on it.

  46. Yvonne, Thanks for the update in trends. When you spoke about warm neutrals being the new color trend were any specific colors mentioned? I am not a big grey fan either and will be repainting rooms in my home. I want a neutral color. Any color suggestions?

  47. Pat at Bringing French Country Home says:

Hi Yvonne! This post made me decide to subscribe to your blog which I’ve followed for years. I loved reading what’s hot and not although I pretty much make up my own mind. There were definitely some trends that were due to retire (gray walls, stainless steel, etc.) but my white kitchen is here to stay. Looking forward to seeing your latest in my inbox. If you haven’t visited my blog, I’d love to invite you to check it out at bringingfrenchcountryhome.blogspot.com. Hugs, Pat

    1. I love that we all have such amazing perspectives. So much is a matter of taste!

  48. I was over gray before it started! I think your home should reflect who you are regardless of what’s hot and what’s not. I am all about comfort and ease!

  49. I love your white kitchen! I would change my oak cabinets to white if there wasn’t so much other oak in my open living/kitchen area. I would copy yours because of your style, it doesn’t matter what the trends are, yours is Classic!

    1. Tina, I have the same challenge, except mine are maple instead of oak. I can’t paint my cabinets, but I have thought about putting a light glaze on the bottom of my counter/bar that divides the sitting area from the kitchen. I also thought about painting that same bar the color of my walls which is Tyler Grey by Sherwin Williams. It is so hard to paint beautiful wood. I know your home is lovely.

      1. Hi Cecilia – Love your name, it is my middle name and hopefully the name of the next baby granddaughter to join our family. I am in love with the name!!!!! Okay, let’s talk decor! I know painting wood is a hard step. But here’s what I say… if you would replace the cabinets if you could why not try painting them. Maple is a wood not so dated looking than oak. Amy Howard At Home has a gorgeous product that takes a wood finish (like you have) and deepens it to a beautiful dark walnut. It’s brand new so I don’t think it is up online yet. Look for it.

        1. I will look for Amy’s product. I havent thought about darker?something to consider. Cecilia is my middle name too. I was born in St. Joseph’s in Atlanta and my parents were expe ting a boy so no names were chosen for a girl. Well, Mom looked down at the pillow case on her hospital bed and embroidered was St. Cecilia because the name of the floor she was on was St. Cecilia. God blrss your new little darling.

  50. I never knew velvet was out. Love, love ,love it, I bought a velvet chair and a tufted sofa a year and a half ago. They do not match but compliment each other. I love color, my and my white kitchen. Why does everyone hate pink so much? In the right place it can be gorgeous. Look at some historic homes they used that color often. Anything classic is better than a trend any day.

    1. I think the velvet is a classic and is loved by tons of decorators. But it has not been in the forefront of the design world. Now this classic is gaining steam and being noticed in a big way. Just because something is not trending does not mean that is no longer relative.

  51. Why are they saying bamboo floors are on their way out? I was hoping they’d be everyone’s sustainable, ecologically good floor for the future!

    1. YES, that would be nice. However, I’m seeing that bamboo does not hold up to hard foot traffic.

  52. Traeey Soroka says:

The comments from those that say they don’t like trends I think are missing the point. Trends are necessary to keep things fresh and new and to keep our homes from looking stale. The key with incorporating trends is do it in small doses. If you decorate 90% of your home in classics then that leaves 10% to allow for trends which can easily be twitched out when the new trend comes along.

  53. Bobbi Duncan says:

I have always stuck with the classics–English and French furnishings, but that doesn’t stop me from adding new uplifting décor. It would get boring if we never were to change things, especially as the seasons change. I love velvet and am just now looking into a dark green velvet for our family room sofa–should go well with every seasons color palette. More importantly, I believe we should furnish our homes with things that truly make us happy–that’s what a home should do. Nice to feel the warmth of sunshine in our little corner of PA.

  54. So much to think about and consider as I plan to refresh some areas of my home in 2018. An excellent post as a starting point. Happy New Year,

  55. Janette @ The 2 Seaaons says:

When we start planning our new kitchen for our new to us house, I’m sticking with white but maybe a navy island. I’m going for classic rather than trendy so it won’t go out of style in a minute. Old movies had white kitchens, and I think we both agree that they’re timeless.

  56. maryjo materazo says:

loved this post! i’m a classic girl with a bit of trend thrown in for freshness. but just cuz it’s a trend doesn’t mean i jump on the bandwagon either. it has to appeal to my sensibility. i think that’s what most of us do. pick & choose what appeals to us and works for our lifestyles. i always thought, just like in couture, that the “experts” are a bit out of touch with mainstream. i really think bloggers like yourself might be more of an influence on that front. so thank you for all you do! xo- maryjo

  57. Carla B Reeves says:

Hello Yvonne, I’ve followed you since I copied your wonderful post on salad dressings! Love your posts and blog. Your decorating style is always fresh and “in” as far as I’m concerned. Like hearing that velvet is still in. Velvet has always been a favorite and I prefer subdued colors as they are easier to freshen with updated pillows and throws. Mostly I have found that the tight weave of velvet works best with my two cats.

  58. I read on another blog that the millennial pink was out. My daughter will be glad to hear your take on it.

  59. I just read on hgtv website that pink is out and fuzzy throw pillows are out . say what!!!! ! I’m happy to know pink is still in! I hope gray goes out and stays out for a very long time! Trends come and go but classic design stays forever.

  60. Interesting on what is in and what is out for this year. I say just do what you like/love. It’s your house and if you like it, that’s all that matters.

  61. I’m so entertained by all of the cussings and discussing about Millenial Pink! In 2017, I read or heard from different sources it was OUT before it was even IN. For 2018, the very same information is abounding; it’s in; NO, it’s out! I have been considering a lovely duvet cover and pillow shams for our master bedroom that are “blushy-beige” in color. I decided yesterday to buy them. The blush shade works as a neutral in our bedroom and isn’t feminine in the least! Our creamy walls, wood floors and entry into our pale grey ensuite meld together perfectly. In or out, I love my Millenial Pink bedding and Millenial Pink accent pieces I’ve added to our room.

  62. Marian Zimmerman says:

who can get tired of peonies, from white to blush to pink, to deep dark reds, throw that color around.
we built our new home in the 90’s , rose and blue everywhere, sigh, it’s all been repainted except the bedroom, waiting to see what you do, before I take the plunge and do a makeover, I keep seeing unfinished wood in warm tones. Love your blog!

  63. I’m so glad to have found you on pinterest. White kitchens are classic. I went with white cabinets 20 years ago and they still look fresh and not dated.

  64. 44 Spanish Street Inn says:

Lets say bye-bye for the last time to trellis pattern anything, especially in gray. Though we’ve used both, its time to go-go!

    Just saying…

  65. Taste of France says:

All-white anything can risk looking sterile, but white kitchen cabinets are timeless.
The best thing about trends is being able to find what you’re looking for, if you happen to want one of them.
The worst part about trends is NOT being able to find what you’re looking for, if you happen to prefer antique/vintage versions and they have all been snapped up.

  66. I am very interested in the rug pictured in Decorating Trends, what’s in, out and here to stay. It has stripes of different sizes and colors. A painted table with stained top and tan chairs with nailhead trim…Where can I find this rug?
Thx very much. Enjoy your blog immensely.

  67. I just can’t be happy about the gold/brass that is still popular again in jewelry and decorations, nor the mauvy pink color. I think I have nightmares still from the 70’s and 80’s! But I am glad there are still other fun options to choose from.

  68. Norma Rolader says:

I love your input on these trends … I think if you love what you have and how it is you do not have to change

  69. Thanks for sharing the ins and outs for 2018. I won’t be changing a lot, but it is nice to know what is on trend.

  70. Change is good – sometimes! Having said that, many times tends turn into “fads” and are gone about as fast as they debuted. Like you, I think many things have been repeated and over done, and I accept those changes easily! When we moved into this house, there was a washer/dryer closet in the breakfast room – how horrid that was to even think about! My husband totally gutted it, put up bead board floor to ceiling, and installed “open shelving”. I LOVE it and his labor of love to build something special for me, and trust me “it isn’t going anywhere”! At least not anytime soon. Like you, Yvonne, I have ALOT of dishes and I’ve really enjoyed being to show them off on my open shelving and switching out the dishes periodically for a whole new look. Thanks for all you do to encourage and educate “we homemaker/interior designers”. You’re the best and believe me when I say, your readers and pod cast listeners love you!

    1. Well, believe me Shari… I LOVE you too! And I so agree! Thanks for weighing in. And thanks for the huge boost in my spirits today!

  71. Susan Whittaker says:

I am so glad the days of grays are on the way out. Too cold and dreary for me. Give me warm neutrals and nature. I’ve never given up on plants- lots of variety and LIFE. Happy that my home may look more “In” as the look takes hold.

I agree totally about white kitchen cabinetry-100% classic. I remember my grandmother’s kitchen, built way before the 50’s when I was little-which was the inspiration for the past 4 houses we’ve remodeled. Each one completely different from the next, but all done in shades of white or milky creams with different counters and flooring. Can’t go wrong with that.

  72. Elizabeth Ann says:

I love the black chunky handsome table with the warm brown top!! The black and white entry design is a welcome in statement. I am going o love your blog!!

  73. Teresa Steadman says:

I love your blog! I also love your dining room table and chairs. Where did you find your chairs? Thanks & keep up the good work!

  74. I am loving this blog. I am so excited I found you, such a true inspiration with fantastic ideas. I am addicted!

    1. Hi Heather, welcome to the StoneGable family! We are so happy you found us too! We have the most wonderful community!

  75. Yvonne, I love your round two-toned kitchen table and linen chairs. They look very comfortable. May I ask where you purchased them and how long ago. I really enjoy reading your blog. You have many interesting ideas.

  76. Mrs. M Nelsen says:

I didnt know grey was on its way out. I live in a home built in the 1920s. Black and white kitchen and soft taupe greys throughout with thick white mouldings. The colors are easy to live with and lovely with candlelight and old silver. Sooooo, I’ll happily be off trend.

    1. And that is exactly how we all should be Mrs. M! It’s wonderful to know the trends but it’s even better to know what we love! Good for you!

  77. What a fun read! : ) We’re building a craftsman/modern farmhouse and by golly, it’s getting that hated shiplap haha!! Also adding some board and batten too. I’ve never even seen Fixer Upper, but I just love the stuff. And the gray! But it depends on which gray—tricky for many people! I’ve have a medium gray in the house I’m living in now, paired with warm wood floors and warm wood cabinets—it’s soothing and beautiful and never looks drab or depressing to me.

  78. Jina sheppard says:

I work in a retail home decor store. One trend I would like to NEVER see again is any “art” containing words or quotes or sayings. Very much overdone, although this type of thing is a best seller for us.

    1. I still love it! I know seeing it all day must make you very tired of it!

  79. Kathy Fox says:

I am enjoying this website, subscribe few weeks! Have to ask about the baskets, especially the round basket. Can you tell me where I can find them?
    Thanks.

    1. Hi Kathy, I am always on the lookout for fun baskets. I got this one at HomeGoods

      1. Sorry, Kathy! YOu can cut and paste the directions into a word document. I make this pillow before I condensed instructions.

  80. I may be old fashioned but I know what I like and stick with it. If I can add one element and place it, I’ve done a good job

  81. Selena Gasbarro says:

Love your blog, thank you for sharing!

  82. I just joined your blog today! Found it through JoLynneShane’s blog. In the section under Warm Neutral there is a patterned pillow in the picture. The colors are great. Any chance you would know where to purchase the fabric or the pillow?

    1. Welcome to the StoneGable family, Sarah! The near pillow came from a local shop (sorry) and the pillow behind it came from The Pottery Barn.

  83. Just discovered your website and lost a whole day to browsing! 😉 I’m wanting to really “finish” the decorating in my home, but my budget is limited and I keep holding off because my tastes—and the trends—are continually changing, and I’m afraid to commit to designs that I’ll either outgrow or will be outdated in a few years. (I’m all for going with what you like regardless of trends, but part of what I like is being somewhat “on trend.”) So I’m stuck in limbo, not sure what I want to do, especially now that two things I have really been drawn to (farmhouse and grays) are probably on the end of their run. Two major things I have to work around are two charcoal couches and a medium-finish farmhouse table. I truly like both of them, and changing them is not an option at this point. But I don’t want to go “whole hog” with either and end up wishing I hadn’t in a few years. So I’m wondering: Do you have any tips for working with the gray and the farmhouse in a way that will keep them fresh and easily changeable but still allow the home to find a cohesive style that feels finished? (That’s a tall order, I know!)

    1. Hi Gen, sounds like I need to write a post addressing this! Yes, Look for a post this month about how to decorate with some trendy items and without having to redecorate when styles change.

      1. That sounds fantastic! Thank you!

  84. I like the article, but I think following trends or what’s in is so overrated. Just because something is overdone doesn’t cause you to redo your space, you redo it because you wanted to, but also following what someone else is doing is so last century.

  85. Peggy richardson says:

Enjoy your ideas. Keep them comming

  86. Hi! Love the article! I’m dying to know what’s here to stay though!!!:)
