I am certainly not a trendsetter but I sure love to see what the “experts” say is on the horizon for those of us who love decorating and home decor. I love trends because I love change and beauty and am always looking for what inspires me. But I must admit I love trends because they can be a bit of a trainwreck. Sometimes absurd and silly! Today let’s look at what to expect to see in 2018 if you love to decorate…
Today on the podcast we are talking about what things we are doing around our homes and what changes are on the 2018 horizon!
2018… Let’s get to it…
Let’s talk about what’s OUT! Now don’t shoot the messenger. I’m just repeating what I’m hearing and seeing on the decor scene. But like most predictions, they are often wrong!
WHITE KITCHENS ARE OUT
All white kitchens are giving way to cabinetry that is heavier, ombre and more colorful. Look for less all white backsplashes and countertops.
My take: I think white kitchens are classic and although they may not be white hot they are here to stay. Instead of a kitchen “white out” try adding color or texture or interest with wall color or wallpaper or backsplashes. I am happily keeping my white kitchen cupboards. However this year I am going to install a new backsplash… and it’s white! YIKES!
Okay, my dear Decorating Tricks And Tricks podcast co-hosts. I told you marble would be taking and s-l-o-w train out of being the most popular stone in the kitchen! But you would not believe me! Choo-choo!
BAR CARTS… AGAIN!!!!
They are in and then they are out and then in and then out and so on and on. I think our decor experts don’t quite know how they feel about the blast-from-the-rat-pack past!
Just last year they were in an hot-hot-hot!
My take: The problem is not the bar cart it’s that we don’t use them correctly. Bar carts are just that. For bars. They should not be decorated and made into anything else. I say, let’s hear if for the bar cart if you have a place to put it!
Think about wheeling your bar cart outdoors for your next picnic! So fun!
No longer is the bare or almost uncovered lightbulb a coveted piece of decor. Fringe is back in lighting and really nothing beats a great drum shade or chandy!
My take: Thank goodness! I usually can’t stand overhead lighting and especially ones that look and feel like an interrogation light! Let’s put up overhead lighting that uplifts our decor!
Yes, open shelves en mass have had their day. And they have had a good run at being the hot-new-belle of the decorating scene. But alas they were too overdone! Overexposure is the great peril of being too popular!
(same area sans shelves)
My take: I love open shelves but I’m honestly got a little tired of them. I even took our open shelved down at StoneGable. I think when something is so overdone and copied the way open shelves have been they start to look a little gimmicky. A really nice open shelf or two that is well put together still looks amazing. And a galley kitchen with open shelves is such a classic!
They were certainly a friend for a season but now gone!
Like the rest of the items on this short list, I think succulents have had their day in the sun. When anything gets too overdone you know it will burn out. Succulents are being replaced by bigger yet still easy to care for plants. I can see that “jungle book look” coming down the pike.
My take: Succulents may not be the darling of the plant world but I think bloggers love them so much that they will still be around. This blogger will certainly do her part!
BYE-BYE COPPER AND ROSE GOLD
Copper and rose gold have been big for about 5 years and since last year we have been seeing brass make a bawdy comeback. But gorgeous unlacquered brass! We will be seeing it age to patina perfection on hardware and bath and kitchen fixtures. So copper and rose gold have been moved out by another metal!
My take: Oh bring that gorgeous unlacquered brass on! I’m not talking about the brass of the 80’s and 90’s. So if you have that shiny brass chandelier in the basement waiting for it to come back I say paint it and use it outside above your picnic table. That’s what I’m doing!
I never really bought into the copper or rose gold fad!
OTHER DECOR TRENDS THAT ARE GOING OUT…
- shiplap (can we all say finally!!!!!)
- one overdone style in your home
- granite countertops (going out for 2 years now)
- bamboo flooring
- reclaimed wood
- grunge decor
Now let’s talk about what’s going to be hot for 2018 and maybe a little beyond!
I can’t remember when one color has had so much fuss made over it. Is it because it is a gorgeous, soft, ballerina pink? Is it because it actually blushes? If you add one color to your decor (and wardrobe) this year make it millennial pink!
The pink trend started about 5 years ago and pink has morphed several times. The reason we all love this pink is that runs the gamut from a glorious beige with pink undertones to a soft muddied but lipgloss sheer salmon.
My take: Oh let’s have a pink moment. I may not paint a wall pink but I may add a couple of soft beigy pink pillows and a throw to my bed. I might also look for a scarf that celebrates my pink girlie-girl side! And I think a suede or velvet millennial pink slipper chair is the quintessential feminine accessory in home decor although the only place I can think of putting it is in my closet!
HIGH CONTRASTS PALETTES
We have moved away from everything being the same color. Do you remember that? Gastly all white… everything! High contrasts are not only very popular they are sophisticated and dramatic! One very hot and classic combination is white and black. Just look how well it works for you in your wardrobe?
Other high contrasts are bits and touches of saturated color accompanied by lots and lots of white. Think red door, white walls, white floors, soft neutral furniture and one red chair.
My take: I cringed to see the everything-is-one-color (especially white) then and I cringe to think of it now! I love contrast and I especially love black and white. Just look at my kitchen and the accents in my home! I’m not a drama queen at all but I do love a little drama in decor!
UPDATED FLORAL FABRICS
You can see more about this pillow from One King’s Lane HERE.
Florals are back after a long, long respite! But these are not your mamma’s florals. They are dramatic and stylized and not shy. They are abstract and bold and are often outlined in black. Look for them starting to pop up in the spring and summer.
My take: I welcome the new florals back. I don’t know if they are my style or if you will see them in my home, but they sure look pretty. And I think there have been aspects of pretty missing from decor lately!
I’m seeing florals used judiciously. On an accent pillow, or one chair. Or a pair of tailored drapes. Gone are the big cabbage rose sofas. Thank goodness!
Like I said above, brass is where it is at!!!!! Unlacquered and unpolished and spotted and green with patina.
My take: I love that we are letting something natural age and do it so gracefully! You will be seeing it here at StoneGable mixed with lots of other metals.
MUTED METALLICS AND MATTE METALS
Just like our new queen of the metals, unlacquered brass, metals are enjoying a huge resurgence. But maybe not so shiny and polished. Muted metals will reign supreme in 2018.
My take: bring them on!!!!!! I never bought into shiny stainless steel!
It’s looking gray and a little cloudy for the cool neutrals. Grays seem to have had a fabulous run and will not be completely out of the picture, but soft warm-tone neutrals will be donning our homes in 2018 and beyond.
My take: It’s no secret that I am not a gray lover. And I’ll be happy to see this trend go by the wayside. Grays are too cold to be used in such large doses and so many grays are just so unattractive. I know! Probably just me! But I love to live with warm neutrals with lots of gold and soft taupe in their tones! Bring on those warm neutrals. Get hygge with me!
I see this being new hot trend being talked about and shown in some more highbrow publications and design books. But I also still see lots of structured almost boxy pieces too! So I’m here to say that you may see this popping up in 2018 but this shapely trend is more likely to gather steam and then be big in 2019.
My take: Totally a matter of what you like. Some curvy furnishings I love and some curvy pieces I think are ridiculous. My taste lends to the contained and comfortable!
See more about this gorgeous velvet sofa HERE.
It is a classic and really has never been very far from hot! But it’s making a comeback. I’m seeing velvet sofas, chairs, comforters, pillows, hassocks, and almost any great piece of furniture. It’s rich and most often seen in deep luxurious hues like emerald greens and cobalt blues and rich coppers.
My take: Let me be the first to welcome velvet back. It is luxury! Don’t be surprised if I ditch my neutral sofa in the living room for a copper velvet one with fringe! Sigh!
Geometrics have long been the star of the pattern world when it comes to trendy decor. But way off in the calendar year I am seeing more complex and ornate patterns making a play for first place in our decorating hearts! This trend certainly plays off the new florals that are hot as well.
Look for floors, backsplashes, and furniture with intricate details!
My take: Using patterns and the new florals judiciously is the way to go. And for heaven sakes don’t get too matchy-matchy. That is the death of great decor! These complex patterns and florals can bring a little juxtaposition and tension to a room that might otherwise look a little bland! Who says a little bit of disharmony is that bad?
Splurge on one stunning showstopper of a piece donned with a gorgeous and intricate pattern!
I said MODERN farmhouse. I think we have seen the backside of the rustic farmhouse movement. That is unless you live in an actual farmhouse. Modern farmhouse uses great contemporary and classic furnishings and warms those styles up with a few signature farmhouse detail. Think of urban farmhouse, modern home meets Fixer Upper!
Want to know what modern farmhouse looks like? Just look at StoneGable!
My take: Well, I love it since I think I invented it! LOL!
