Mason Jar Herb Garden

10 MINUTE MASON JAR HERB GARDEN- Create a darling herb garden for indoors and out!

Hey everyone, It’s spring! I want to be out digging in the dirt but our weather is a bit iffy! So, I’m gathering up my Mason jars and creating a fresh herb garden to use inside now and take outside in a couple weeks. I can stick my garden in a sunny window and snip some wonderful fresh herbs until it warms up enough for the whole little herb garden to go outside. Good for my body and soul! This pretty little herb garden only took 10 minutes to make! Let’s gather our materials and get busy!

I used wide mouth quart jars to h0ld each herb. I really could have probably used smaller ones, but I wanted to put them in this tall wire basket.

Here’s what you will need:

  • mason jars
  • herbs
  • potting soil

I worked on our side porch table to create the herb garden.

Fill the mason jars half full with potting soil…

Take the herb out of the pot. If the soil around the herb is too big to fit in the jar gently massage some of the soil away from the roots.

Plant the herb in the mason jar.

Water the plant in the jar. Be careful to not water the plant in too heavily. The soil should not be soggy. You will know when your herbs need water if you stick your finger 1 inch into the soil and it is dry.If the soil in the bottom of the mason jar looks soggy or muddy stop watering it. And if it looks soaked… repot.

Wouldn’t this herb garden look adorable lined up on a windowsill?

I found a wire basket in my basement and it contained my herb garden perfectly!

  1. While the idea is pretty, herbs don’t like wet feet! They need drainage, sorry to break the news. Btw- I love your blog, it’s the only one I read everyday, looking forward to more inspiration.

    1. I put small pebbles in the bottom of the jars…..works well!

  2. I love Mason jars and I love Herbs. I can’t wait to do this. Thank you for the post. ? Have a sunny day. ? Annmarie

  3. This is brilliant, Yvonne! Love mason jars and your herbs look beautiful! Happy Wednesday!

  4. Too funny that we did the same thing!! xo Love yours!!

  5. Great and pretty idea Yvonne…I love the fact that you can tote it into the kitchen when you are ready to cook….Mobile herb garden!
And, what a great gift that would make too!

  6. I put some pretty gravel at the bottom of the jar to give it some drainage. I have an ivy topiary in a mason jar. It’s almost four years old now so I think the gravel helps it from sitting in too much water. It helps me see how much water I add and when it needs more! Love the idea of herbs on my kitchen window sill!

  7. Simple and lovely! And eco as you probably recicled the jars!! Tks! kisses ML

  8. I love your herb garden mason jar idea Yvonne!! I can’t wait to plant my herbs up (still too cold here yet!). I usually make a big planter pot up to sit on our deck right outside my kitchen but I love your idea to create a basket of them! I’ll be making this up for my kitchen island! Love partying with you as always! 🙂 xo H

  9. What cute id a! I love it, thanks for the idea!

  10. I love this as a kitchen centerpiece & it’s easy to judge watering requirements when you can see through glass. If you start this real early in the year (say, February) sometimes soil can develop a touch of mold (due to less air movement since we northerners need closed windows.) If that occurs, try & stir in (a knitting needle works) a little charcoal which will help “sweeten” the soil.

    1. Do you mean the activated charcoal that you can buy in supplements? What kind do you use?
Thanks for the tip! I love this idea, Yvonne!

I love this idea! Thank you for sharing it! I live in the West; Salt Lake City is pretty high in elevation, still we have some warm days in the spring that I could put this moveable herb garden out in the sun and bring it in when we have a spell of freezing weather. (It is good that it is on and off like that so the snow in the mountains does not melt all at once and flood the valley).

I could just set the wire basket on top of the soil filled pots for now, because I find herbs need some strong sunlight to grow well. I like the gravel in the bottom idea. You could insert a straw down to the gravel to drain it if it gets too soggy. Thanks for the reminder about charcoal…I always used that in planing terrariums.

You have inspired us and gotten us thinking!

  12. Love this idea! It’s adorable and it’s going to be added to my kitchen windowsill this weekend!

  14. Yvonne,
You inspired me to pot some herbs for my sunspace “book shelf potting bench.” The white alyssum is the perfect addition to brighten the green herbs.

  15. Should I put any gravel in the bottom of the jar for drainage ?

    1. Yes, that is a good idea. My jars are tall and I will plant these out in my kitchen herb garden in a month so they are okay like they are!

  16. Such a fun and “farmhousy” idea!!! Love, love, love. Blessings to you, Yvonne!

    Yvonne,
Thanks for your everyday encouragement to help us to keep positive, keep cheerful, and to remember…our God is in control even when life around us doesn’t seem to confirm that fact..we’ve no need to succumb to fear. The battle is His, and He is on our side! Pray America….He WILL listen…

  24. Anne Baker says:

Herb garden: I would put some gravel in the bottom of the jar before the potting soil for drainage. Because the jar cannot drain, if it is watered too much there may be problems.

  25. June Carlos says:

I don’t have any sunlight on either side of my Apartment I wonder I wonder if they will grow? I like that idea

  26. I cleaned my basement and found a whole stash of blue mason jars, unfortunately they are narrow mouth. BUT, I’m certainly going to give this a try, if I ever get to get some herbs. The chives are starting in the garden, so I will start with that…LOVE THIS!

  27. Rhonda Thomas says:

These are so sweet! I’m very interested in doing this. Any suggestions on what would be the most basic herbs to start with?

  28. Just in time (thyme)!!! My new kitchen is almost finished and I want to grow some herbs in my kitchen window !!! I may try the mason jars!!
